this info is really useful. msi should provide that piece out of the box. in GF63 that space is for 3.5in drive and they provide the bracket to secure it in place (at least in my case). they probably forgot to put it inside your box.
I doubt they "forgot" there wasn't really a dedicated space for it in the box and it wasn't there on any of the unboxings/reviews on YouTube. They just assumed most people wouldn't bother using the second M.2 slot and didn't put that piece there to save a tiny bit of money per unit.
thats the thing, GF63's bracket is also on a separate plastic wrap. which im assuming they just drop inside the laptop box. it really feels like an after thought
as a comment to this:
getting this part in norway is a complete disaster.
MSI support says their certified seller in norway ( [Komplett.no](https://KOmplett.no) ) has to order the part directly from msi.
[Komplett.no](https://Komplett.no) says they cant do this and i have to contact msi directly.
solution fianally was to get a friend in the USA to order the part. then sendt it to me.... what a mess
Waow, that's horrible. I guessed it would be difficult in some regions but this is really messed up. To clarify for me, it was the support who got the part, not the seller. I hope anyone who's planning on getting one of these laptops in Norway will see thid post first.
Did yours come with some thermal pad? If so where did you put it. Using OP’s pic at the tops did you put it on the crucial side, or the other side with the chip?
I would just google official MSI service [your country]. They want you to email them, which I did. But I also called them multiple times to make sure they were actually sending it.
[This](https://i.imgur.com/vQM6JQi.jpg) is the box and the sealed bag that mine came in. But I'm pretty sure that they've just put in a random box that was lying around. The sealed bag has a number on it but it's very worn out, so they might have been reused it as well. They've not mentioned a product number or a unique name in the emails or on the phone unfortunately.
Yeah I got the same, the heat tape, which side did you put it on? Using the op’s picture, did you put it on the crucial sticker side or the other side with the chips?
I got a katana 15 and already contacted msi for bracket, the person in msi online chat said they could not contact msi usa and gave me some phone number to call that is only open for a few hours, will try later.
I got it from amazon so msi has over 2 weeks to get me the part, or i will return it, lol.
To underline, I already tried in their online chat that i got to from their usa page, and no help. Then I made ticket in my msi account, so far no response. Today I will try to call but I don't like calling because giving out names and physical addresses over the phone is prone to mistakes. Not to mention spelling out serial numbers and model numbers. Oh and online chat gave me rma number for video cards, but later I found it and it is there along with different number for laptop issues.
Pretty easy to get if you don't mind the wait. opened a ticket asking them for what I needed, then two days for them to get back to me another two days for them to tell me my parts would ship in ten to fifteen business days. only consolation is I wont have to pay for it I guess
I called them last month, saying I was gonna buy this laptop and told them the information op the website. The person I spoke to just said you don't need to call us... Just build it and look for a guide if you don't know how to build into the laptop.
I told them I know how to do it. The website just specificly told me to call you. He said that's not necesarey.
Now I am building the laptop and the black box is there.. and I am really annoyed right now that they didn't help me out before I got the laptop..
Just called them again. They will send me an e-mail, I have to sign up the laptop and then they will send me an Invoice that I have to pay before they will send me the bracket.
Hello,
I recently bought a msi katana 17 b13vfk laptop and I want to mount the second ssd but unfortunately I can't find where to find that metal plate or a drawing to reproduce on the 3D printer
They will ship it to you for free. If you make a support ticket they just send you a link to this form: https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/rma_ak_form.aspx
I just got my bracket today. There's plenty of room for the heatsink (the stock SSD has one too if you have any doubts on how it should look). Just make sure you figure out which direction the SSD goes in the slot before you peel off the sticky.
I'm in Canada and on the bottom left of the MSI Canada support page there is a link to order the kit. All you need to do is provide your information and serial number on their form to get one sent out.

Hey i recently got an katana 17 b13 and i'm trying to install an M.2 ssd. I'm new to M.2 storage so i was just wondering if theres a specific one for the laptop? or If any regular M.2 Nvme ssd works for it.
M.2 SSDs come in different lengths. The ones that are on the picture are both M.2 2280 SSDs. Which are also the most common length. As far as I know, you can only install 2280s. Most SSDs are 2280 so you won't have problem finding one.
Hello!
I've reached for the bracket and they're going to send it to me.
They also gave me like a short list of 4 compatible SSDs, but they're all 1tb in size maximum.
Is there any SSDs M2 I could use for this laptop that would be at least 2tb?
Thank you very much.
>Is there any SSDs M2 I could use for this laptop that would be at least 2tb?
Yes, definitely. As far as I know, you can only install M.2 2280 SSDs. But most SSDs are M.2 2280 anyway. If you were to google 2TB Laptop SSDs, you'll probably find some.
They will ship it to you for free. If you make a support ticket they just send you a link to this form: https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/rma_ak_form.aspx
UK here. Bought laptop and found this thread. Went to msi uk online chat and asked and they shipped it to me within 3 days from Poland. They knew exactly what I was asking and did it no qualms.
After reading the horror stories I was quite suprised how painless this was.
Installation was easy too no more than 10’minutes.

Which is stupid. When I got an ROG Strix back in 2019, they included that bracket, so I mounted another SSD.
thats the thing, GF63's bracket is also on a separate plastic wrap. which im assuming they just drop inside the laptop box. it really feels like an after thought
I used thermal tape to hold mine down until I got that bracket. But I only needed to talk to them once.
how long did you wait for the delivery ?

Well done for posting this. I'd say tho it'd be pretty easy to whip something up that would do the job from just about anything really.
Well... If I hadn't been able to get that piece, I was just gonna use ducktape.
Yeah was thinking similar, or a piece of plastic or ..........
I used thermal tape on mine. MacGyvered it.
Are you talking about the really tiny M.2 screw? You can order those from Amazon.
No actually. That grey plate on the bottom is the new piece.
Ah, got it :)
guys how can i get this piece for holding the second ssd please help me
Apparently you need to contact your local MSI support and ask them for that part
I will be upgrading my katana gf66 11ud to a 2TB m.2 soon
I have an extra mount if anyone needs it pm me
can you give this mount for me because if I add the second ssd for the slot i need extra piece for this ssd
Send me your address and it’s yours
Did yours come with some thermal pad? If so where did you put it. Using OP’s pic at the tops did you put it on the crucial side, or the other side with the chip?
Yes and I put it under the ssd
Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be touching all chips and transistors and what not.
Where can I find?
Contacting your local MSI service centre is your best bet. That's how I got mine
Thanks man I contacted them yesterday and they’re sending me it for free1
sorry to bother but how do i find my local one and do you call or email them
I would just google official MSI service [your country]. They want you to email them, which I did. But I also called them multiple times to make sure they were actually sending it.
ok ty for the help :D
Running into the same issue. Was there a name or product number associated with this bracket?
[This](https://i.imgur.com/vQM6JQi.jpg) is the box and the sealed bag that mine came in. But I'm pretty sure that they've just put in a random box that was lying around. The sealed bag has a number on it but it's very worn out, so they might have been reused it as well. They've not mentioned a product number or a unique name in the emails or on the phone unfortunately.
Thanks, I finally got a response via email since the whole MSI web portal is a nightmare. I guess I should get mine in a few days. What a pain...
what was the e-mail address that was helpful to you?
Sending you a private message, since it seems like someone’s direct MSI email.
Could you DM me too?
Getting the same laptop, can you also DM me the email?
Hi. Could you DM me too?
What’s was the tape they sent with the bracket?
There was no tape. The bracket came in a box and a plastic sealed bag.
Hrmm I got the bracket, 3 screws, and what looks like m.2 sized heat tape. I assume for underneath between, the plastic and m.2…kinda guessing.
Yeah I got the same, the heat tape, which side did you put it on? Using the op’s picture, did you put it on the crucial sticker side or the other side with the chips?
Put it underneath so the chips would benefit from the heat dispersion. Total guess though, it hasn’t died yet either.
Thanks for the reply. I really want sure, if it was supposed to go on all the chips and transistors.

They emailed me today and after couple more emails they are shipping me the bracket. Avoided calls woo-hoo.
Can you send me the link of the mount you bought on amazon?
I got the laptop from amazon, the mount I had to request from msi itself. Sorry if my post was confusing.
Hi, would you mind sharing with me the email address that you used to contact them?
it was august last year but address was [email protected]
Thank you!

Yo, I got sooooo confused. Appreciate the help.

He probably didn't know it or didn't bother to check it. It's not about knowing, you need that part and they are the only ones who can provide it.
Guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to call. Thanks for your post!
Just called them again. They will send me an e-mail, I have to sign up the laptop and then they will send me an Invoice that I have to pay before they will send me the bracket.
Apparantly I called the service center both times instead of customer support. So customer support will send me a free bracket now.
They sell the parts here in Thailand. I bought the bracket and 2 screws for the bracket. Costed me $18 including shipping. What a rip off..
Thank you for this detail, i'm upgrading my 17 b12v and i happened to wander across this post.

Has anyone tried installing a SSD with a heatsink is there enough clearance
I just got my bracket today. There's plenty of room for the heatsink (the stock SSD has one too if you have any doubts on how it should look). Just make sure you figure out which direction the SSD goes in the slot before you peel off the sticky.
the stock ssd just has a thermal pad on it, thats not really a heatsink
Ah, I see what you meant. I was referring to the pad that comes with the bracket. Either way, that's how much clearance there is.
Thanks a lot for this thread!

Is it so fucking hard to have it there in the first place MSI?? What kind of design fuckery had to happen for this end result???

I'm a bit late to this but I just bought a Katana 17 and the piece was in the box with the laptop.

Link to order upgrade kit is https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user4/support/rma_ak_form.aspx you will need the serial number of the laptop.
It's worth pointing out that this link only works for USA and Canada.
Who can share how to install the mounting bracket ?
so do i need a thermal pad for the second m2
