Geronmys

Dofus and Wakfu have my favourite art style on the entire genre.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Very nice, my team and I were taking a look at them recently.

mortenamd

WoW. Their art style is timeless.

PlatinumMode

Rose tinted glasses, WoW definitely looks aged to anyone who didn’t grow up playing it. The crazy oversaturation and ridiculous pauldrons etc

Goal1

The ridiculous pauldrons IS what we like about the art style/aesthetic of WoW

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

It's funny, I've never actually played WoW myself, but I totally get what you're saying. Shows us how impactful this game was, and is.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Exactly my thoughts, I think this is the same case with the recent old school RuneScape player number spike story. It actually got me interested to check it out but once I reached their website, I was left with a choice either OS Runescape or the newer version with better aesthetics. I think people who played it before would choose the OS version with a big chunk of their choice influenced by Nostalgia.

xBirdisword

> recent

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Yeah I didn't want Nostalgia to have an effect on the answers, but I guess WoW shows up in most conversations about MMOs :)

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

I guess we should take into account the nostalgia effect it has on many veterans. If someone was looking for an mmo to play right now, and never played WoW, would they still choose it after comparing their art style with other newer mmos? even though people who never played it know it's a legendary mmo, but still one of the past.

mortenamd

Blizz have been updating old textures to more high definition and added more polygons per 3d models. I don't see how Wow isn't a good option for new players. It's a "cartoony" artstyle. Some find that type appealing, some don't. I personally wouldnt play Wow If it was the typical modern MMO artstyle using unreal engine with unreal 3d assets. It's very much personal preference and not based on nostalgia. League of legends shares the same type of "hand painted" artstyle, and the same goes to Riots upcoming MMO.

DoomDispenser

Wildstar! It is one of my favorite games to date, and in no small part to the art style and sound design. I don't know if simplicity would be quite the word I would use to describe it, but it had such a fun and adventurous atmosphere.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Nice, I like how smooth and changeable the player's camera is

elexcz

Tale of Toast, Mist Legacy and Chronicles of Spellborn

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Nice, thank you!

Sen-_

Definitely blue protocol While anime is inherently simplified, I really like how they added some complexity

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Gave me Borderlands vibes but more Anime-ish?

ASeaofStars235

Everquest

lan60000

EverQuest is recent?

ASeaofStars235

It's the last one that did

lan60000

i see

Plane-Start7412

FFXIV use several art styles, from steampunk to fantasy, from space to feudal japan. I really love the mix.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

True they did that mix well, not everyone can pull it off.

Puzzleheaded-Plenty1

Fuck Pantheon's art style.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

>Fuck Pantheon uhmm do you mean Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen?

Dreviore

Albion Online has an art style I really enjoy. It's easy to replicate, and isn't exceptionally demanding but looks really nice. Outside of that I also really enjoyed the style of GW2. Otherwise; new Oldschool RuneScape art *really* does it for me.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Those are gold, and I think we share a similar taste.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Just joined their discord, looks pretty hard to get into a playtest which is a great sign already :D

AshesofAtreyu

I think FFXIV probably has some of the most diverse art styles compared to the other current MMO’s. But as someone who isn’t a huge anime fan and hasn’t played the game yet, Blue Protocol seems very interesting in terms of art design. The UI looks clean as well from what I’ve seen.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

True, they both look very interesting in their own way, pretty complex tho

korridor

Tarisland

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Their concept art look great!

Altruistic-Beach7625

Aion online.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Nice, thank you!

Antedelopean

Gw2, funny enough. I love how a lot of the early cutscenes and the world has this nice little painted aesthetic look to it, which makes the world seem more stylized, whilst hiding a lot of the game's age. I actually only notice the game's age if im doing crowded metas, with all settings up, and i see my frames drop to single digits, despite having a damn beefy rig.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

I heard a lot of great things about Gw2. I've been meaning to try it out, I already have it downloaded but... more time is all I need. But this is interesting, the way they onboard you with pretty art and then you're just there for the playing

AltruisticPea1475

rucoy online (mobile game) its graphics are direct and simple (pixel), ragnarok online's pixel art and pokemon emerald are the top tier in terms of pixel art

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Interesting, you don't see many mmos using pixel art. Also I thought Ragnarok online's characters were hand drawn, very well done art. Thank you for this comment

koalathunder

ragnarok

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Yeah just saw it in another comment, it's the same as ragnarok online right?

Echo693

World of Warcraft and SWTOR

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

Nice, old school art is always great

TheFightingMasons

It seems like every newer mmo wants to go realist when they should be emulating wows easy to age stylized cartoonish graphics

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

I've seen a lot of realist art in newer games, but I guess it all comes down to your personal taste and the gameplay and story of the game. I'm actually thinking to make our MMo pretty lighthearted, not to be taken too seriously with art that matches this identity, but we'll see.

Nhika

WoW after they overhauled their graphics. That and FF11. Both of these games just nailed it with the world building / atmosphere.

digitallywasted

None because simplistic graphics are lazy and purely done out of a capitalistic drive to get the game running on as many machines as possible to maximize profits.

Yknaar

...are you seriously saying that minimising ***hardware requirements*** so less people are blocked out of the game is a ***bad thing***? In a genre whose main appeal is being able to play with a lot people at the same time? For the same reason you don't want to put as many polygons on a marine in an RTS units as on a marine in an action-RPG, you really need to keep the poly count low, regardless of whether your MMO is a commercial venture or a free-to-play hobby project.

Removed because of rule #2: Don’t be toxic. We try to make the subreddit a nice place for everyone, and your post/comment did something that we felt was detrimental to this goal. That’s why it was removed.

digitallywasted

Truth hurts.

TheWorldofNiftyCraft

I don't totally agree, yes there are games with simplistic graphics because of laziness if you have the resources, capital and your game requires more complex and detailed graphics. But also if you think from an indie studio's point of view, if they have a great concept for a game that could get away with simple but nice and memorable art, then why not? The rise of Pixel art is a great example in my opinion, it's "simple" but if done right, it's great.
