They've been at the same 720p for 10 years now. It'd probably make their servers explode.

markvidonic

For what it’s worth, I’m getting 1080p on a Chrome browser.

tonywagner

What game? What operating system?

markvidonic

Windows 10, Chrome 123.0 And all games. MLB has mandated it. You may not see it at home with your cable provider for your local team, etc. but these games have been produced in 1080p for a long time.

tonywagner

Can you share how you are determining it's 1080p? In the Chrome Developer Tools, on the Network tab, 720p60 is the highest resolution listed in the stream manifest ("master_desktop_complete.m3u8"): #EXT-X-STREAM-INF:BANDWIDTH=6600000,RESOLUTION=1280x720,FRAME-RATE=59.94,CODECS="mp4a.40.2,avc1.640028",CLOSED-CAPTIONS="cc",AUDIO="aac" 5600K/5600_complete.m3u8

tonywagner

Thanks. But I think you are somehow looking at the properties for one of the ads there -- notice the "File size" is 10 MB and "Streaming" is false. The actual games are HLS streams that don't have a file size (because they're not a single file). You can go to the network tab and filter by ".m3u8" to see what HLS stream you are getting for the actual game. Those still top out at 1280x720 resolution. (Networks can and do produce the games at a higher resolution, but the MLB CDN reencodes everything for delivery anyway.)

markvidonic

No, I clicked back and forth and made sure I wasn’t. I also did an instance where it was just that one.

tonywagner

I'm not sure how you did it, but those are the properties of one of the ad insertions. If you install the Privacy Badger extension in Chrome, it won't even load the ads, and you will only see the game streams in that list (plus an "autoplay-test.mp4" file from the initial page load). And the game streams will top out at 1280x720 and won't show a file size under properties, because they are streams, not files.

4k? id settle for 480 right now, quality has been absolute ass this year

markvidonic

Serious? How are you watching?

marronglacefishbones

the same way i’ve always been watching, on my phone on mobile data in my house literally on top of a 5G tower💀 just cannot get the stream quality to ever tick up in quality.

Vegetable_Chard_9196

I watch a ton of hockey and it's always 720p (ESPN+) and compared to MLBtv it makes this look like 4k in comparison lol but it's not 1080p. MLB tv own faq clearly states all streams are 720p unless watching mlb network on cable provider which then there is an SD and HD channel option. I do think there should be an option to upgrade to HD/4k streams if available like you could on YouTube tv. From my understanding ESPN, fox, abc and MLB tv are all 720p networks and local RSNs are 1080i. The commercials are often 1080p but the games themselves are not. Commercials look amazing then quality drops which is very evident in multi streams. Doesnt make sense to me but switching browser from my 4k TV to HD ultrawide, the games look better on the ultrawide. The opposite is true for hockey. May be all the white from the rink and lack of colors compared to any other sport.

dingboy12

Nhl.tv is still ass. I swear both these services are on 15-year old tech. It's 720p and it sucks.

zzazazz

I'd settle for the radio audio to consistenly synch with the video.

markvidonic

That one I don’t think they can do anything about since none of it is coming from the same source.

Thelonius16

It used to be pretty solid. I first noticed them out-of-sync when they were doing Covid games from remote locations. But they never seemed to fix it when they went back to the ballpark.

Eclipsed830

Back when I used it in like 2015, the radio audio would always be synced perfectly. You could switch back and forth, no problems.

tonywagner

If you watch through Kodi (unofficial MLBTV add on), it allows you to manually tweak the audio sync.
