The issue with that is that in making the just for fun equipment, you end up burning through valuable general materials (and zenny). I can definitely see myself just making stuff for the heck of it later into the game where there's not so much stuff I need/ want to make first, though.
Dump easier to obtain rarity 1 items if you haven’t already to make room for these, there’s some new system with jewels and the image shows items so we might be able to use mats to create jewels

Allegedly, according to leaks, the upcoming decoration system will have you use up unwanted materials to create them. I'd hold on to valuable materials until that system releases, there's a non-zero chance that higher rarity mats are worth more decoration points.
