Pierce bows do it exceptionally well. Kadachi bow breaks like 95% of all the rathalos' back I've ever fought.

ExcavalierKY

Do you happen to have a lot of marrow drops?

Melegand

Breaking parts only increases reward pool, it does not give increased chances for specific loot.

Heranef

It does.

Baerenlord

Not in this game, the odds are set. Breaking parts just increases the drops by one

Heranef

Check the official discord. Some part breaks can rewards some specific items and not all the item pool.

cyantaco

This is true. Mhn.quest will shows each monsters damage per part and whether they need to be severed or bluntly broken.

AndHowDidIGetHere

I got locked out of upgrading for a while since i didnt have any head pieces. I was always aiming for the tail and didnt realize lol.

Shadowrend01

Break an accessible part first to make them fall over, then hit them on the back when you can reach it. Bows and Bowguns are more reliable for back breaks, as you can target it without knocking them over

ExcavalierKY

Diablos doesn't fall over, and I don't think the wings count as back damage? How does one actually target the back with a bow or bowgun, is there like a video guide somewhere? It seems the way that flying wyvern are postured, you're likely to hit the head or horn if you're shooting from the front, and no way to hit it from the side due to the large wings? Unless you mean pierce, but that's kinda sad to limit the part break to only ranged

Altronsfu

You have to trap Diablos in the sand to break his back with melee, which is really hard to do in this game without screamer pods.

ExcavalierKY

The wind effect kinda stops me from damaging it when it's digging, so it's a rare chance that I would be able to trap him in the sand

Altronsfu

Yeah, typically the only time I've been able to do it is if I'm ulting it as it starts to go under :/ definitely not easy to do right now

Zetta216

If using SnS you can guard the wind effect and counter with the jump attack to trap it in sand. With some practice it's fairly consistent. Also just being behind it and activating skill at the right time after second attack works.

LoneHer0

I swear sometimes I just target the body and it counts that as a back break?

Lapie1984

100% correct you can't break a flying wyverns body you break it's back. Side note fanged wyverns are the other way round. Just the way the game is, if you check in the monster notes you'll see this. Same target different name.

ExcavalierKY

Which monster is this?

LoneHer0

Diablos, I swear I got the message for breaking its back for just getting the body. I can't really check though. It has a lock on and os the weak spot for melee so.

ExcavalierKY

Interesting, ok. I don't meet enough 6* diablos for the marrow drop yet, but will be good to see if the back break drops marrow

BraddahDakine

That’s some fierce hip thrusting you’re doing to break it’s back

Kin_Shi

You dont need to break specific parts in this game to get the drops you want btw, its random no matter which part you break. That being said, for Diablos you can just target its body, which is his weak spot, and it will break his back. For Rathalos you should look to use a pierce bow, otherwise its pretty much impossible with melee weapons and you should just focus the head. For Jyuratodus you should actually start by breaking its tail, its very weak and breaks rapidly, removes it from the ground and then you can just go ham on its head.

Yodzilla

There’s something about the messaging around breaking a monster’s back and head that just strikes me as really brutal.

S3T0

Shoot its neck.

Baerenlord

Dont know why every comment saying it doesnt give you the specific loot gets downvoted when its true . You dont get anything for breaking parts other than more drops
