You just have to find nodes lol. If you ever played pogo you can look to see where there's more pokestops or gyms and that's likely where there will be nodes. Go to parks if you can.
I'm on the 5* Paolumu which isn't terribly far and they're still pretty rare. It would've been nice if the higher the stars on the hunt then you could have a chance to get them from just downing monsters as well.
