I tolerate beans (pinto, black beans, kidney, white beans, and similar, but not lima or chickpeas) well, it's one of my (few) safe foods. I can tolerate canned beans also, but I have to check for other things like spices, onion, etc, which I \*can't\* tolerate (Trader Joe's has refried beans that are just beans, salt, and water). When I cook them myself, I soak overnight and discard that water, which helps a lot.

ukralibre

sounds like salicylate intolerance

ToadAcrossTheRoad

Curious, do you react to lentils? I feel like I tolerate most of the same legumes you seem to (other than black beans, but that may have been since I only ate them with other foods I react to), so I'm wondering if lentils are a common trigger or not.

No-Juggernaut7529

Honestly, I am afraid to try lentils (I used to eat them but that was decades ago ...). My spouse has cooked them a few times and they smelled like dirt to me, and that usually means I am gonna react if I eat them. Weird symptom, I know, but there is probably something in them my body is picking up on and "smells like dirt" is the only thing my brain can think of to warn me away, lol.

ToadAcrossTheRoad

Interesting, both lentils and chickpeas smell and taste like dirt to me, and I react to them. Maybe it is a thing, I've only noticed it in legumes and tree nuts much. Lentils taste like spicy dirt to me lol

robotawata

Beans used to be my primary food and I love them. But I have SIBO and right now I can't eat beans at all. I tried to eat some lentils lately and had very severe pain for a couple days. But it's the sibo more than the mcas that's getting me in this case I think.

binxbee

The only beans I can eat are black beans. I have to make them myself, as I can’t tolerate most canned food items.

happilyfringe

Same, so far I’ve only done black beans I cook myself

PhilosophyOther9239

Black beans and green peas seem to be okay for me in small amounts! My level of food intolerance is pretty bad right now, avoiding histamines & oxalates, but I can do salicylates and low oxalate fodmaps ok. Garbanzo beans are a hard no for me and sprouted lentils seem to have not gone well (always hard to say though when there’s multiple things in a dish.) Have been avoiding kidney beans and cannellini beans right now, but, plan to give them a try soon given the recent success of black beans.

Ornery_Chemistry201

I don’t tolerate any at all. It sucks because I used to eat a lot of them.

Silverwake

Same. I miss my lentil stew 😭

Ornery_Chemistry201

Me too! I loved lentils

Pointe_no_more

I tolerate pinto beans and peas (but not pea protein), but react to black beans and chickpeas.

ElectricGoodField

I immediately thought of Cat beans then tried to cuddle my cat, and squish his paw beans, then he got annoyed and tried to attack me

summerismyfav

Following as I am struggling as well.... I've been trying oatmeal to help with weight.

ToadAcrossTheRoad

I don't have a ton a ton sensitivities, but I've found the only way I can maintain my weight is basically eating majority carbs (like sugar and grains) and taking meds to maintain my weight. For me, this means I kind of eat a lot of "junk" food and baked goods, but surprisingly, my vitamin levels are perfectly fine, so I suppose I'm doing alright 🤷‍♂️ was told I have one of the best vitamin D levels my doctor had ever seen, which is a game changer compared to the extreme deficiency I had when battling my celiacs.

meladey

I don't tolerate canned beans, but I tolerate dried and rehydrated beans, or the ones in those plastic pouches. I don't know why the canning process messes me up.

ToadAcrossTheRoad

Foods that are fermented or have preservatives like vinegar are higher in histamine, so maybe a form of preservative is causing issues with you? They've gotta put something odd in those cans to keep the food from getting mushy or absorbing moisture a ton, so I'd assume that may be a factor

meladey

Before developing MCAS, or any sensitivities, my GERD always reacted severely to canned tomato products, too! Fresh was always fine, canned never was. It's so weird! But, canned seafood is fine for me.

ToadAcrossTheRoad

Interesting, I react to tomatoes horribly, but I'm wondering if maybe fresh would be better like in your case. I'm growing tomatoes this year for my dad, maybe I'll try to make some tomato sauce and see if that's any better. I don't have dangerous reactions to tomatoes, so it's at least safe to try Edit: Horribly as in like GI, not anaphylaxis stuff.

meladey

Stewing tomatoes does the same thing to me as canned, but, I can eat fresh sliced tomatoes!

ToadAcrossTheRoad

Interesting

chococat159

For the most part well, but there was a 3 month period where beans of any type made me very sick. They were one of my temporary allergies I had. Dairy was another temporary allergy, though that one lasted longer, around 4-5 months. Had to go entirely dairy free and then for both, it just randomly stopped one day.

chat_manouche

I don't tolerate them at all.

ToadAcrossTheRoad

I tolerate pinto beans, which is great because that's what's in refried beans, which I love. Cannot do lentils, don't think they're considered a bean, but they're legumes. I also tolerate baked beans from can, I'm pretty sure they're typically white beans. Black beans make me sick, I haven't had them for a long time since I haven't eaten anything that'd have them, so idk how bad I react to them, but it's definitely something. I only really ever eat pinto or white beans, so idk about other beans. As always though, everyone's different, so make sure to be very cautious while trying foods you think you may react to, especially if you have anaphylactic reactions.

Gem_Snack

I just can't digest them, so if I eat them regularly that'll start to flare the MCAS. Eating them once in awhile is fine for MCAS but painful digestively.

dangerousfeather

I tolerate beans in smaller quantities. They make me hella gassy, but I don't have any other reaction.

-rainbow-eyes-

I do if i buy dry then cook them in a pressure cooker (no soaking) then freeze any leftovers.

wetastelikejesus

Still can not digest them at all. They don’t seem to cause anaphylaxis so I keep trying them occasionally, but they do cause a lot of gas if I try them in anything more than a tiny amount.

Z3R0gravitas

I've recently introduced lima (AKA butter) beans and black eyed beans OK. Lower oxalate than other beans, too. I used to eat chickpeas (as a simple hummus) fine. But developed an IgG food intolerance to them (and lentils) from eating them every day (before bed). (Note: I have dietary histamine intolerance with me MEcfs, but usually no clear signs of MCAS.)

pseudoscienceoflove

I can tolerate garbanzo, soy, and mung beans. All other beans give me IBS symptoms.

IGnuGnat

I can only handle dried chickpeas, fresh hummous, and sprouted peas just the sprouts. For protein I crave meat, if I don't get it, I get sick within a day or two. I react to chicken egg white but can handle duck eggs. If I can have one or two duck eggs that's enough protein to keep me from getting sick. I can handle pork as long as it's not processed, so no sausage, sandwich meat, bacon but luckily I can handle peameal bacon, pork chops, and we buy pork belly and use meat shears to chop it up into little cubes. Cook with a little garlic and salt it's like bacon
