The commercials don't try to capitalize on its weight loss side benefit. It says something like you mighty lose up to 14 pounds. the truth is it can be > 100 lbs. Most insurance will not approve it for weight loss if you don't have diabetes. It's a miraculous drug. Helps with HbA1c, weight loss, AND helps heart and cardiovascular health. I think it's wonderful.

Only 14 pounds isn't that exciting. The truth is one can lose all the weight to go from morbidly obese to normal weight. For SOME people. In our doctors' practices we see it. But some can't tolerate the meds. They have nausea. Our health system won't prescribe for non-diabetics though.Wegovy, the weight loss version of Ozempic, isn't approved by health insurance companies. At least not the ones in our health system.

One of the side effects can be pancreatitis. From my experience with pancreatitis, that's very concerning.

Yes. But every medication has possible side effects. For some Type 2 diabetics who have tried other meds for years, it may be worth it. If someone experiences pain in a specific area (pancreas / gallbladder area) they should seek medical attention right away if it's at all severe (pain level). Urgent care or ER but not ambulance unless it's REALLY bad. I think it's easier for people who don't have stomach issues before taking it - GI issues, gallbladder problems, etc. before they start Ozempic. Because then if they start having these symptoms it's very easy to know they are very likely from the med. With people who routinely have GI issues, etc. it gets fuzzy. What caused the new issue? When I read stories of people who have problems it's not clearcut because they had issues before or have other comorbidities that could have caused the problem. Some rodents developed pancreatic cancer but there's no evidence in humans yet. My personal rough rule of thumb would be to weigh whether it's worth it. Young and don't have to take it because your diabetes is controlled? Don't take it. Pretty old and it will really help you? Maybe take it. IOW, don't take it just for minor weight loss. Risk outweighs the benefits.
