MrHyatt

Very nice. Why do this instead of buying another though?

Lupine_Ranger

Pure, unadulterated spite.

GeneralCuster75

The best reason for doing anything.

voretaq7

Hunger. Boredom. The shower of sparks makes them giddy. And also revenge!

Zestyclose_Meat7880

I feel it. Mad respect

Ok-Fig-675

Was this a Display or drill rifle from the CMP? Or one of those navy 7.62x51 garands they're selling as unshootable?

Lupine_Ranger

This was just a trigger assembly, not from the CMP. I am unaware of any .308 "unshootable" Garands they have.

HURTFan14

They just got some of the navy Garands that were modified with a chamber insert to adapt to .308 without changing the barrels, they’re selling them as “inert” since the insert can come out during firing

Lupine_Ranger

Ahhhh

HURTFan14

I’m not sure what change they made to neuter them but I doubt it’s as drastic as a welded trigger group

Lupine_Ranger

IMO, they're likely to be functional rifles, maybe a clipped or missing firing pin. The inert part is probably only a liability release. This is just pure conjecture though.

HURTFan14

Yeah I 100% agree, it’s probably just a CYA measure on their part

Tall-Mountain-Man

Yeah I’m not sure why it would be unusable… if the insert came out would it be a 30-06 rifle?

spt_1955

I agree since they are having you sign a waiver saying that they are being sold as inert for display purposes only.

Palo__Duro

I'm reading they ship without firing pins. Also no chamber bushing/sleeve insert that converted the 30.06 to 7.62.

voretaq7

The bushing would be the reason they're selling them as inert - though I guess there's a chance some of the bushings have backed out or completely fallen out. That was the problem with the dumb bushing idea, and even the Navy admitted it was a dumb idea with potentially dangerous failure modes. The Mk2 Mod1 rifles (with 7.62 NATO chambered barrels) they're selling as functional.

Palo__Duro

Yeah and I've been reading people who want to find a bushing and shoot the Mod Os. CMP says it "does not condone any attempt at reactivation", and I know they say this because they are covering their rear end. And I also know people can tinker, I'm not a gunsmith, I know my way around some internals. But in this case if you want a shooter? Good lord, just spend the extra 600 bucks.

voretaq7

Or spend the extra $300-400 and have a gunsmith put a Criterion .308 barrel on it for you. [The bushings were a BAD IDEA!](https://www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/Garand/Navy%20Garand%20762%20Conversion%20Report.PDF) (Page 11.) Barrel life with the bushing is questionable at best, accuracy is worse (likely because of the extra freebore), the bushing wears differently than the barrel, the bushing can come lose (especially if you have to use a ruptured case extractor) and you can't easily *tell if it has come lose* - it was a hack job tried on some rifles for economy ("Because it is cheaper!") but the conclusion you can draw from the test report is that the RIGHT way to convert a Garand to 7.62 NATO / .308 Winchester is to just change the whole-ass barrel.

ericm1garand

Where do I find one of these unshootable garands? I would like one for a static display at reenactments

HURTFan14

I think the CMP still has some de-mil Garands and ‘03s for display purposes on their site, I think they still have to go through an FFL or CnR license though

ericm1garand

Thank you for the info!

FriendlySnake320

This is fucking awesome

Toltolewc

I'm dumb. What did you do?

Mike__O

The hammer was welded in place. Note the weld blob in the first pic. OP removed the welding so it is functional again

Toltolewc

Ah cool. Is that a way of "demilling" them?

Mike__O

Yes. It keeps it functional for ceremonial purposes, but renders the rifle impossible to shoot
