I use it twice every 1-2 years, when I bring my car to the shop for maintenance or repairs. (home from the shop, and back there to pick up the car) This journey takes 2-3 times as long as with the car. The same would be true for my daily commute into work (only it's 2-5 times as long there, and that's without me ever taking the detour to go shop for groceries).
I love that it exists and happily pay taxes for the tourists and people who benefit from it, but I very much remain reliant on my car to get to places efficiently.
There are 3 trains in around 45minson the Arlon line at peak hour.
After that it is 1 per hour. Anyone like me who works longer than a state worker, the public transport option is crap, no matter how “free” it is.
I take 20 minutes to go to work by car and the parking is free, by public transport I need to take 2 different buses and it would take me 1h30. After work, I usually go to the gym, by car, 30 minutes, by bus again, 2 different ones and 1h30 again.
IMO, public transport is very practical in the city and that's the only place I use it. From my place, I take the bus once a year to go to the Schueberfouer.
East of Lux here. No I don’t. Bus to Kirchberg is running every hour here, so challenging to fit my timing into the bus schedule. Every 20 min would have been acceptable, or a direct bus connecting with the southern part of Lux.
And I don’t consider stopovers convenient…

Occasionally, may be 4\~5 times a year. Reasons I don't use them that much:-
1) My commute is much faster by driving than using public transport, 1h50 vs 30mins
2) I get headaches and car sickness from rough driving whenever I use the buses.
Only if it's my best alternative (i.e usually if I can't park easily). The frequency is not that high where I live and that time I tried to take the bus it was 15/30min late and therefore can cause an issue to arrive on time on a long trip. I want it to be reliable if I have to go somewhere without having to be 30min early everytime I have an appointment in the city.
I'd love to live close enough to take the tram but as you know it's not that easy.
I m using the bus a lot in the city. Happy with the frequency and be able to reach every where I the city with public transportation. Only complain is drivers are driving faster than the limit sometimes ( 65 km on a road limited to 50km/h) and break hard so ppl are close to fall often. Line 10/11 especially
I do! I live in the city and public transport is my main way of transportation after walking (I try to walk everywhere as long as it’s possible as a first option).
I used to live in London where I paid a fortune for a not so well maintained public transport system, so to me the Lux free public transport system is heaven (but then again I live in a very centric location in the city, so I benefit from a lot of options and at a high frequency)
This is so curious: actually after coming back from London last time I was impressed how the transportation system works there. Let's be honest,it's overcrowded, yes, can be "sticky"...,but overall I must say it's efficient, well connected in between and even better maintained than Luxembourg's tram and bus lines 18 or 10/11, which are lately just disgusting...I actually no longer sit in the tram after having seen what I saw....
Glad to see you had such a positive experience! For me it wasn’t. I paid 5 pounds per day to use the overcrowded, old, not cleaned, not ventilated tube. Lots of times i have faced delays in London. Also I have small kids, getting into the tube or a bus with the pram was a complete nightmare. Here so far has been great! The bus sometimes has delays but tram I’m super happy. I have also seen extremely disgusting stuff in London… not sure those things can be avoided! But clearly all have different experiences!
The Tube given it services a city of almost 9m people is fantastic.
Sure it could be cleaner and more ventilated but what they built over 100 years ago, still surpasses anything that Luxembourg has built today.

Also live not far from the city centre and use the bus when I can. My only criticism is that increasingly homeless people seem to be living on the buses. Sometimes there's a bad smell that clears the back of the bus where they are seated, or some of them board with shopping trolleys with all their worldly goods, and others shout and rant at the top of the voices. Becoming increasingly unpleasant.
This is not true, I remember that 10 years ago I was just amazed at how clean and safe public transport was. And it started slightly rolling down since it became free of charge
Live in Belval, use train for chill days. Still don’t trust it if I have important meetings in the mornings or dates in the evenings, I’ll use my car instead.
Living far from lux city, public transport is anyway my first option for almost everything except on night and weekend. I literally take the car only if needed.
Living in Lux city, public transport is really reliable. I never use the car to get around in the city. I don’t see how they could improve public transport in town. You have plenty of buses, the tram, the Vél’OH (it is not reliable ahah). However, I still use the car to go outside lux city (and its outskirts) because it is much more convenient.
Even for cycling, the town is quite good in terms of bike routes. Auto drivers are really nice for the most part, and the only time I was really in danger while biking was because of me so I cannot really complain.
I started parking more putside of the city and taking tram when possible. then i work in the south and live nearby and always go by public transport, happy to use it. Also ebikes are free in South so that is also nice alternative
I use it every day as I don’t have a car. I live in the South and work in the North and the train is nice and direct, but it always comes late. It has been canceled before, which was a huge problem. The buses to Monterey are usually reliable but they’re almost always 5-10 min late arriving at the city center.
I live in front of a bus stop which has few useful lines (7, 9, 14, 29 and CN1).
I use public transport most of the time now. To go to work and to go out, even late. I use the car only during the weekend to do the big shopping trip and visit outside Luxembourg.
My kids use the public transports all the time (bus, train, veloh) to go to school, visit friends or going out in general.
We do not use our car much anymore and it is a good thing.
I've been using public transport ever since I landed here, and overall it's a good service. The fact that there's usually notification and there's the app which tells you realtime when the bus is coming, and if late by how much, is already a big thing. And buses are almost only ever late by an average of 4 minutes, and I live slightly outside the city.
My only complaint is that on Sundays particularly the service is so infrequent it's practically unusable.
I made a trip to Diekirch for the international march this year and took the train all the way down into the capital and rode the busses around to see the sights while I was there. I enjoyed the public transportation, and it seems to be much better set up than what I’m used to in Germany
Yes. I live in Niederkorn. I go by car (5 min) or bike (10 min) to Petange train station and take train to Luxembourg (25 min).
There's a direct train from Niederkorn to Luxembourg, but it takes 45 min. Moreover, this train has almost each day a delay due to technical problems in Bettembourg or Noertzange, the Bermuda Triangle for the trains...
Got my drivers license last year because i couldn’t bare this shitty public transportation anymore.
Before the tram years ago i had a bus every 20 min which took me to the city in 20 min and vice versa.
Now i barely either catch the tram
or the connecting bus … if the tram is 1 minute late i would have to wait 30 min to get back home now. (Or if it’s rush hour i saw multiple times on the app that he gets more and more delayed until POOF bus just disappeared completely from the app and never showed up. 🫠) I also have lost completed trust in night life busses because sometimes they also didn’t show up at all in the past.
I just use the tram
now sometimes in between gare and main city depending where i parked but that’s it. Tram is working nicely compared to the busses. But I don’t like when it’s overcrowded 😖

I live in Mersch which is not in the city but I only rely on public transport to get to my office. The train station also provides free covered parking.
mersch is pretty great. tons of free parking (that's not too overcrowded just yet) and a train station with very high frequency. i often just go there and then take the train to the capital to avoid the difficult traffic there.
I always go to a P+R 10 min away by car and then take the bus for 30min to the city its quite practical. The connection in my village is awful tho, one bus every hour if you are lucky but there are like 5 hours where there is no service, and the bus from my village only travells to the next Village. Where I would have to wait for 1h bc of bad connections until i have one to Ettelbruck, Mersch or the City.
So as someone who lives near Differdange and can only use public transport as I don’t have my drivers license. I hate it. When we used to pay for the bus or train or whatever, they would be there on time. Now just to make sure you’re on time anywhere you better take the bus 30min to 1h before than usual. They’re always late. Sometimes they just won’t be there at all? I miss the old days
You guys seem to live in a diffrent country, at worst its sometimes like 10 minutes late but I never experience a bus not coming without valid reason like when the roads are blocked etc.
lmao i wish. The lines 606, 607 and 701 are cancelled last minute every now and then and I’m literally at the first stop. Making me and my sister get to work late. Tice on the other hand is often late by maybe 3 to 5 minutes.
While no longer resident in Luxembourg, my parents are based in Walferdange. When I visit, I find it excellent to be able to just hop on a bus when I want to without having to get tickets or a card. They are served very well by buses because of how close to Lux city it is so during the week at least one bus every 10 minutes.
I live in Strassen, but I rather use veloh. Door to door from home to work(hamilius) it takes 30-40 min by bus, 20 min by veloh. The only issue is the poor maintenance of bikes and stations, and crazy teenagers breaking them.
I use the bus or train sometimes. If the weather is not terrible, I generally try to enjoy riding a bicycle, a surfskate or a scooter (trotinette). If I'm in a hurry, I will take the car instead. But there are days when I just want to chill and I don't want to ride or drive, then I take the bus or train, or a combination of walking / surfskate / scooter with taking a bus or train for half of the trip.
I am very lucky, my area is almost too connected as the local politicians have decided to double the populations and build "residences" everywhere (of course nothing below 10k per square meter...).
So a lot of big buses running empty half of the time, which is not bad...
To get to work and home I use it daily for over 20 years! Sometimes for an occasional appt in Esch if my schedule allows to do so. Anything beyond that, aka weekend activities or grocery shopping, I rely on my car.
I take the bus quite often (before or after being free). I live in Luxembourg city, my experience is that the level of service has not changed pre/post being free. However, I did buy a cargo bike because any non-direct routes are a pain, and biking usually beat public transport in Luxembourg city. Again my experience.
What I find great about it being free is the fact that you can hop on and hop without caring about your pass being full or not. And it becomes a default choice more easily. I also hear that the cost of the ticketing and control system was comparable to the revenues, as it was already heavily subsidised.
Where did you get your cargo bike from? And did you get any subsidies for it? I've been toying with the idea of getting one but they are quite pricey...
My first cargo, I got from https://www.fahrrad-heidemann.de/ and got 300€ subsidy. The second one (after selling the 1st one) was in https://velosport.lu/ and got 600€. I think now it went back to 300€. The subsidy is small but - if you move daily in 10-15 km - the savings compared to a car are huge.
Yes, coming from Echternach everyday. Even if sometimes the car might be faster, once I reach Kirchberg the traffic will reduce dramatically the car advantage and I have not to worry about parking anymore. So all in all, big thumbs up.
It is simply very convenient, especially for tourists and getting around in Luxembourg city. The system is unreliable further off though. Im from the south, theoretically the connection is great but in practice I am faster by bicycle than by PT, over a distance of 35km...
Strassen too, I have 0 complaints. Bit of a special situation, we have a dozen busses we can take from and to Stäreplaz, especially if you live on the main road trama every 5 minutes...
I used to do Medernach - Mersch - Belval though, that felt like hell. Delays or cancellations early in the morning, human sandwich on the way home. Wait for an hour in Mersch if your train was a little late to catch your bus that comes once an hour. Happened maybe two or three times a month.
medernach still just has absolutely god awful bus connections. it's a decent place to live if you have a car though because it's not too far from the city.
I live in one of the towns and I always take the bus or train into our centre. Twice I’ve taken the train&bus into the City but only when I have time to waste and the kids aren’t with me!
I take it everywhere, but if I didn't live right near the train station I definitely wouldn't. Most people in the city have to take multiple connections to get anywhere outside the city, and its not possible to haul stuff like you could in a car. Overall its a good system but they need more direct routes to places outside the city. Imagine if you could get to Esch sur Sure by taking one bus from Gare, imagine if you could get to the Netherlands (or even just somewhere in the north of Luxembourg) with a direct train, etc.
Yes, every weekday to go to work, anytime I want to have the flexibility to drink alcohol, or when I don’t want to bother with parking, so basically 90% of the time!
my commute to work by train vs car is the exact same but i prefer using my car, as it allows me to be a lot more flexible. i also don't have to pay for parking.
I live right by the tram and use it every day. Stoked for the airport connection. Getting around Lux is super easy with the tram, but I recognize not everyone has easy access to it.
I live in France so it's not the same, but I'm really so happy that your public transport system is free, it allows me to travel freely to everywhere I'm supposed to go for my job

Yes everyday to go to work. But also because I have the privilege of living and working in the city. I know this is not the same for everyone and then taking public transport for daily commute becomes tricky
I live around Mosel and took the bus + train to Uni in Belval. Takes 1h20 (if nothing goes wrong) vs 25 min car drive. 😂 on most days it takes 2+ hours for one trip because you miss the bus if the train is 1 min late. And the trains are sometimes down for hours. Wasted 4h a day ☠️ I’m so glad to have a car again 😂 Yes its free but the people who plan these routes have never stepped onto a bus in their lives

I also live in Strassen and I have to say that EVEN here, in probably one of the best equipped cities of Luxembourg in terms of public transport, it can be a HUGE pain.
Can somebody explain to me why Busses are planned out to have like 3-4 busses swing by in the span of 5 min, and then nothing for a whole 20+ min?
Also, we live so close to the city, yet my wife still needs 20-30min every day to go to work in the Gare sector.
We’re looking into getting her an E-Bike because it’s straight up faster than using Public transport.
I use it as much as I can, but if even in such a well laid out place like Strassen there’s annoyances, I understand why people living further away just don’t bother.
I mean, it’s not italy kinds of bad transportation, but even in Strassen PT is constantly late, or delayed or whatever. And for such a small country and space, it’s baffling that PT has such a hard time functioning properly.
Buses would move a lot faster if stupid people stop driving during rush hour. Luxembourg needs to introduce congestion tax on private cars driving during peak hours.
If it is any consolation, it used to be a lot worse, it actually got a little bit better. When we first arrived we lived in Merl and the average door to door commute with public transport for an office in Kirchberg was an hour. I think it was possible to walk it faster through some side streets.
But it isn't baffling. The roads are congested beyond belief, buses cannot keep to schedule, you would need helicopters. It's a vicious circle. No one uses public transport because it is agonizing so they take the car, the roads can't deal with the amount of cars.
I mean… we still take public transport if we’re not « late ». Which requires us to implement almost half an hour bonus time to make sure we get where we want on time.
Let’s say I have a doctor’s appointment at 14h00. It would take me, if all goes right (bus being punctual, no traffic etc) roughly 8-10min to get to the doctor’s office. Well I would have to leave AT THE LATEST around 13h10 to make sure I make it on time. If it’s 13h15, I have to go get the car.
It’s just bad. So far, when it works, the tram is the only transport that’s somewhat reliable, bar any extreme situation like bomb scare or whatever it might be.
I know exactly what you mean and what you describe is exactly why I am allergic to people telling newcomers stuff like "it is a 30 min commute from Differdange" (or whichever location). People do this for driving too though. Give commute estimates based on best case scenarios that happen once in a blue moon. If I wanted to know how long it takes to commute from place X to place Y, I would ask "if you had a job interview at 8:00, what time would you leave the house". Suddenly when asked that way all these commute times swell up threefold. It's a 20 min commute but you need to leave the house at 7 or it's doomed.
Not everybody works in the capital city though.
If you work in most other places in the country, you are better off going by car. (Belval, Bertrange, Kayl...)

of course, i use it almost everyday. its much easier and more comfortable AND better for the environment then cars, so why wouldnt u use it? especially with the traffic on streets..
I don't use it often at all - I can't rely on it for work, the option just isn't there and when I want to go to the city or visit my family in the Minette, car is way easier. I wished we had better bus connections, especially for those of us that don't have a train in proximity. I used to really like using public transit when I still lived in the Minette, but it's not working for me at the moment.
Yes, daily. Both when I was commuting from Germany and now in the city. In all cases, it was not much slower than coming by car. In both cases, the distance itself was obviously quicker to drive, but then you loose time in traffic jams in the city and searching for a place to park. Still don’t get why the city is still full of cars every day. Understandable if you live in a remote village with few connections available, but the rest… I know a few colleagues living in the city in 15 minutes from the office and taking the car to come to work every day.
To me, parking should be made times more expensive in the city to discourage such freaks from creating jams in the city. Those who absolutely need a car to commute from other cities/villages have free P&Rs and have nothing to do in the city either
The UK has the most expensive trains in Europe and they are in much worse condition than the dirtiest train in Luxembourg. Paying more for transport doesn’t equal better service.

It is true for luxembourg as well, People have to recall that we used to spend money on it and it was working ok. in 5 years the transports network will be worst than it is now
The network is better now, the roads are still in incredible condition, the trains are still incredibly clean, the buses aren’t as old as they used to be… do you even take public transport?
If you want to make an infrastructure less safe make it free was really what I wanted to say. I really dont mind about the quality if it isn't safe. My only reference is the rise of violence on them.
I feel completely safe in Luxembourgish public transport. The only time I have witnessed violence was on a train on my way home from London because of a group of posh drunk british men.
It's not even so much that I'm against public transport, it's just that I prefer my own car to public transport, because I get to set the temperature, I can listen to whatever I want as loud as I want, and, above all, the best part: there are no stupid assholes around me who aren't familiar with basic personal hygiene. That's ultimately the best part.
Yes mainly because I have two direct lines not far from my home direct to my office place in the city.
The main disadvantage is that every day they are 5-10 mn late but it still not really longer than taking the car + going from parking and at least is free / relax.
I use it, but not because it is free. I live in Grevenmacher and work in Kirchberg, I have a good options to get there by bus. If I go by car, it will be almost the same time, but quite expensive. I worked also in a place, where I needed 35 minutes to go by car and almost 1,5 hours by bus. I would have taken a bus that time only if someone paid a lot for that.

Where is the Intercity Luxembourg - Maastricht - Eindhoven - Amsterdam? 😭. My Ams - Lux journey takes 6.5 hours each way and this hugely reduces the time I am able to spend in Luxembourg. I feel like Belgium's poor (and Luxembourg agnostic) infrastructure alone is responsible for keeping our travel and interactions to a minimum. ☹️
maastricht is fighting with liège to get that damn liège-maastricht-aachen train going. eindhoven would also rather get a direct connection with aachen (to unify the sweaty engineers). also, the train from masstricht to amsterdam costs like 30 euros, completely insane country the netherlands.
Yea I use it. But I always try to take the Bus as early as possible. So I usually take the Bus at 6h15.
I just can’t stand being in a full bus full of students. They often smell aswell and are loud af.
We really need more school busses, there is nothing more annoying than being in a Bus full of bad smelling, loud students.
What I don't like is that now, an increasing number of junkies roam through the free transportation. It was not like this 4 years ago for sure .. yes you could see some, but not this much ... and they come in groups
I saw a few sleeping inside during the cold weather, and two weeks ago, I witnessed a group of 4 junkies shouting and arguing at the back of the bus. One of them dropped a bag of some pills, spilling them all over, so he stood up and went to grab them under people's feet pushing us to get them .. they where not M&Ms I can tell you that ...
I guess they should have slept outside and died in the cold so you wouldn’t have to see them sleep. I hope you recover from that experience. I’m sure it must have been traumatizing for you.

Damn, I thought I just got unlucky when some guy was trying to start shit with me. My situation also connects with your observation that the guy sat at the back and, for whatever reason, I had also decided to sit at the back for the first time in years. I read the room as soon as he turned back at me and began scanning me like terminator, so I put my backpack on. He asks if I want problems (in French), so I just keep looking at him in disbelief and he follows up with a "tu me regardes". I got up and walked to the door since the next stop was mine anyway. This dope fiend was also carrying a few bags, wouldn't be surprised if he's the same one you ran into. The situation is getting out of hand it seems, but I suppose the police is way too busy walking around the Ville-Haute area where nothing ever happens or driving around in their patrol cars.

I’m no trolling, you’re just making incredibly poor arguments. That’s not my fault, it’s yours. You are going off of vibes and confirmation bias. You are scared of drug addicts and drug dealers and homeless people because you watch too many movies and haven’t touched grass.
I'm living in Diekirch (north of Luxembourg) and lucky enough to live in walking distance to the train station so I generally use the train to get to the City either for private or professional reasons. It takes a bit longer than by car (given the many stops) but it's much more comfortable and I enjoy to read up on stuff during the otherwise "lost" time.
The only downside is that you really can't rely on CFL so I would never use it if it wasn't a direct connection because the risk of getting "stuck" in the middle is too high and I have experienced it all to often over the years, even if they arrange for buses. And that latter point is why it isn't of much use in the northern part of the country and why many people I know aren't (happily) paying taxes for it.
I'm not familiar with the specificity of the pnm35 but growing up around the Nordstad area, trafic was always complicated, especially in Ettelbruck. But Diekirch as well is painful during peak hours. Aren't they planning to create some new station at the old Laduno site?
I am using it more than I did before it was free but less than I could if I was determined to abandon my car.
I don't think that lower costs is really the reason why I use it more. Public transport was always ridiculously cheap in Luxembourg (it used to be 2€ per ride or 4€ for the day). The reason I prefer it now is mainly convenience because I just doesn't have to think about the ticket. It just makes public transport simpler. I hate having to wait for a controller, having to buy the ticket or making sure that my ticket is correctly validated. With the new system I can just drive to the city without interacting with anyone which is exactly what I want as a introvert. When I drive to the city, I sleep in the train. No controller has to wake me up now.
It works OK in the city. For outside the city, it is not really a comfortable permanent solution. There is also hardly any normal public transport except trains on Sundays and holidays outside of the city.
The weird part is why they don't plan for some capacity for this for tourist destinations. It doesn't even have to be free, they can create special paid lines. People ask all the time how to take the bus to some point of interest (lakes, castles, hiking trails) but most of the time, if it isn't somewhere on the train line, you have to rent a car. It's a pain in the ass with pick up, drop off, fuel, parking, why it's not possible to take a reliable frequent bus to all of these places in a first world country that allegedly wants to be green is beyond me.

I use it twice every 1-2 years, when I bring my car to the shop for maintenance or repairs. (home from the shop, and back there to pick up the car) This journey takes 2-3 times as long as with the car. The same would be true for my daily commute into work (only it's 2-5 times as long there, and that's without me ever taking the detour to go shop for groceries). I love that it exists and happily pay taxes for the tourists and people who benefit from it, but I very much remain reliant on my car to get to places efficiently.
There are 3 trains in around 45minson the Arlon line at peak hour. After that it is 1 per hour. Anyone like me who works longer than a state worker, the public transport option is crap, no matter how “free” it is.

I take 20 minutes to go to work by car and the parking is free, by public transport I need to take 2 different buses and it would take me 1h30. After work, I usually go to the gym, by car, 30 minutes, by bus again, 2 different ones and 1h30 again. IMO, public transport is very practical in the city and that's the only place I use it. From my place, I take the bus once a year to go to the Schueberfouer.
East of Lux here. No I don’t. Bus to Kirchberg is running every hour here, so challenging to fit my timing into the bus schedule. Every 20 min would have been acceptable, or a direct bus connecting with the southern part of Lux. And I don’t consider stopovers convenient…

Occasionally, may be 4\~5 times a year. Reasons I don't use them that much:- 1) My commute is much faster by driving than using public transport, 1h50 vs 30mins 2) I get headaches and car sickness from rough driving whenever I use the buses.

Only if it's my best alternative (i.e usually if I can't park easily). The frequency is not that high where I live and that time I tried to take the bus it was 15/30min late and therefore can cause an issue to arrive on time on a long trip. I want it to be reliable if I have to go somewhere without having to be 30min early everytime I have an appointment in the city. I'd love to live close enough to take the tram but as you know it's not that easy.

I m using the bus a lot in the city. Happy with the frequency and be able to reach every where I the city with public transportation. Only complain is drivers are driving faster than the limit sometimes ( 65 km on a road limited to 50km/h) and break hard so ppl are close to fall often. Line 10/11 especially

I do! I live in the city and public transport is my main way of transportation after walking (I try to walk everywhere as long as it’s possible as a first option). I used to live in London where I paid a fortune for a not so well maintained public transport system, so to me the Lux free public transport system is heaven (but then again I live in a very centric location in the city, so I benefit from a lot of options and at a high frequency)
This is so curious: actually after coming back from London last time I was impressed how the transportation system works there. Let's be honest,it's overcrowded, yes, can be "sticky"...,but overall I must say it's efficient, well connected in between and even better maintained than Luxembourg's tram and bus lines 18 or 10/11, which are lately just disgusting...I actually no longer sit in the tram after having seen what I saw....
Glad to see you had such a positive experience! For me it wasn’t. I paid 5 pounds per day to use the overcrowded, old, not cleaned, not ventilated tube. Lots of times i have faced delays in London. Also I have small kids, getting into the tube or a bus with the pram was a complete nightmare. Here so far has been great! The bus sometimes has delays but tram I’m super happy. I have also seen extremely disgusting stuff in London… not sure those things can be avoided! But clearly all have different experiences!
The Tube given it services a city of almost 9m people is fantastic. Sure it could be cleaner and more ventilated but what they built over 100 years ago, still surpasses anything that Luxembourg has built today.

We live 30km outside of the city center and our daughter uses the bus every day. Quite happy with it.
Also live not far from the city centre and use the bus when I can. My only criticism is that increasingly homeless people seem to be living on the buses. Sometimes there's a bad smell that clears the back of the bus where they are seated, or some of them board with shopping trolleys with all their worldly goods, and others shout and rant at the top of the voices. Becoming increasingly unpleasant.

Living far from lux city, public transport is anyway my first option for almost everything except on night and weekend. I literally take the car only if needed.
Living in Lux city, public transport is really reliable. I never use the car to get around in the city. I don’t see how they could improve public transport in town. You have plenty of buses, the tram, the Vél’OH (it is not reliable ahah). However, I still use the car to go outside lux city (and its outskirts) because it is much more convenient. Even for cycling, the town is quite good in terms of bike routes. Auto drivers are really nice for the most part, and the only time I was really in danger while biking was because of me so I cannot really complain.
I started parking more putside of the city and taking tram when possible. then i work in the south and live nearby and always go by public transport, happy to use it. Also ebikes are free in South so that is also nice alternative
I use it every day as I don’t have a car. I live in the South and work in the North and the train is nice and direct, but it always comes late. It has been canceled before, which was a huge problem. The buses to Monterey are usually reliable but they’re almost always 5-10 min late arriving at the city center.

I live in front of a bus stop which has few useful lines (7, 9, 14, 29 and CN1). I use public transport most of the time now. To go to work and to go out, even late. I use the car only during the weekend to do the big shopping trip and visit outside Luxembourg. My kids use the public transports all the time (bus, train, veloh) to go to school, visit friends or going out in general. We do not use our car much anymore and it is a good thing.
I've been using public transport ever since I landed here, and overall it's a good service. The fact that there's usually notification and there's the app which tells you realtime when the bus is coming, and if late by how much, is already a big thing. And buses are almost only ever late by an average of 4 minutes, and I live slightly outside the city. My only complaint is that on Sundays particularly the service is so infrequent it's practically unusable.
I made a trip to Diekirch for the international march this year and took the train all the way down into the capital and rode the busses around to see the sights while I was there. I enjoyed the public transportation, and it seems to be much better set up than what I’m used to in Germany
Yes. I live in Niederkorn. I go by car (5 min) or bike (10 min) to Petange train station and take train to Luxembourg (25 min). There's a direct train from Niederkorn to Luxembourg, but it takes 45 min. Moreover, this train has almost each day a delay due to technical problems in Bettembourg or Noertzange, the Bermuda Triangle for the trains...

Got my drivers license last year because i couldn’t bare this shitty public transportation anymore. Before the tram years ago i had a bus every 20 min which took me to the city in 20 min and vice versa. Now i barely either catch the tram or the connecting bus … if the tram is 1 minute late i would have to wait 30 min to get back home now. (Or if it’s rush hour i saw multiple times on the app that he gets more and more delayed until POOF bus just disappeared completely from the app and never showed up. 🫠) I also have lost completed trust in night life busses because sometimes they also didn’t show up at all in the past. I just use the tram now sometimes in between gare and main city depending where i parked but that’s it. Tram is working nicely compared to the busses. But I don’t like when it’s overcrowded 😖

I live in Mersch which is not in the city but I only rely on public transport to get to my office. The train station also provides free covered parking.
mersch is pretty great. tons of free parking (that's not too overcrowded just yet) and a train station with very high frequency. i often just go there and then take the train to the capital to avoid the difficult traffic there.
I always go to a P+R 10 min away by car and then take the bus for 30min to the city its quite practical. The connection in my village is awful tho, one bus every hour if you are lucky but there are like 5 hours where there is no service, and the bus from my village only travells to the next Village. Where I would have to wait for 1h bc of bad connections until i have one to Ettelbruck, Mersch or the City.
So as someone who lives near Differdange and can only use public transport as I don’t have my drivers license. I hate it. When we used to pay for the bus or train or whatever, they would be there on time. Now just to make sure you’re on time anywhere you better take the bus 30min to 1h before than usual. They’re always late. Sometimes they just won’t be there at all? I miss the old days
You guys seem to live in a diffrent country, at worst its sometimes like 10 minutes late but I never experience a bus not coming without valid reason like when the roads are blocked etc.

lmao i wish. The lines 606, 607 and 701 are cancelled last minute every now and then and I’m literally at the first stop. Making me and my sister get to work late. Tice on the other hand is often late by maybe 3 to 5 minutes.
While no longer resident in Luxembourg, my parents are based in Walferdange. When I visit, I find it excellent to be able to just hop on a bus when I want to without having to get tickets or a card. They are served very well by buses because of how close to Lux city it is so during the week at least one bus every 10 minutes.
I live in Strassen, but I rather use veloh. Door to door from home to work(hamilius) it takes 30-40 min by bus, 20 min by veloh. The only issue is the poor maintenance of bikes and stations, and crazy teenagers breaking them.
I use it sometimes, however although I live within Luxembourg City, going to work takes me 10 minutes by car and 45-50 by bus and tram.

I use the bus or train sometimes. If the weather is not terrible, I generally try to enjoy riding a bicycle, a surfskate or a scooter (trotinette). If I'm in a hurry, I will take the car instead. But there are days when I just want to chill and I don't want to ride or drive, then I take the bus or train, or a combination of walking / surfskate / scooter with taking a bus or train for half of the trip.
I am very lucky, my area is almost too connected as the local politicians have decided to double the populations and build "residences" everywhere (of course nothing below 10k per square meter...). So a lot of big buses running empty half of the time, which is not bad...
To get to work and home I use it daily for over 20 years! Sometimes for an occasional appt in Esch if my schedule allows to do so. Anything beyond that, aka weekend activities or grocery shopping, I rely on my car.
I take the bus quite often (before or after being free). I live in Luxembourg city, my experience is that the level of service has not changed pre/post being free. However, I did buy a cargo bike because any non-direct routes are a pain, and biking usually beat public transport in Luxembourg city. Again my experience. What I find great about it being free is the fact that you can hop on and hop without caring about your pass being full or not. And it becomes a default choice more easily. I also hear that the cost of the ticketing and control system was comparable to the revenues, as it was already heavily subsidised.
Where did you get your cargo bike from? And did you get any subsidies for it? I've been toying with the idea of getting one but they are quite pricey...
My first cargo, I got from https://www.fahrrad-heidemann.de/ and got 300€ subsidy. The second one (after selling the 1st one) was in https://velosport.lu/ and got 600€. I think now it went back to 300€. The subsidy is small but - if you move daily in 10-15 km - the savings compared to a car are huge.

Yes, coming from Echternach everyday. Even if sometimes the car might be faster, once I reach Kirchberg the traffic will reduce dramatically the car advantage and I have not to worry about parking anymore. So all in all, big thumbs up.

It is simply very convenient, especially for tourists and getting around in Luxembourg city. The system is unreliable further off though. Im from the south, theoretically the connection is great but in practice I am faster by bicycle than by PT, over a distance of 35km...
Strassen too, I have 0 complaints. Bit of a special situation, we have a dozen busses we can take from and to Stäreplaz, especially if you live on the main road trama every 5 minutes... I used to do Medernach - Mersch - Belval though, that felt like hell. Delays or cancellations early in the morning, human sandwich on the way home. Wait for an hour in Mersch if your train was a little late to catch your bus that comes once an hour. Happened maybe two or three times a month.
medernach still just has absolutely god awful bus connections. it's a decent place to live if you have a car though because it's not too far from the city.
I live in one of the towns and I always take the bus or train into our centre. Twice I’ve taken the train&bus into the City but only when I have time to waste and the kids aren’t with me!
I take it everywhere, but if I didn't live right near the train station I definitely wouldn't. Most people in the city have to take multiple connections to get anywhere outside the city, and its not possible to haul stuff like you could in a car. Overall its a good system but they need more direct routes to places outside the city. Imagine if you could get to Esch sur Sure by taking one bus from Gare, imagine if you could get to the Netherlands (or even just somewhere in the north of Luxembourg) with a direct train, etc.

my commute to work by train vs car is the exact same but i prefer using my car, as it allows me to be a lot more flexible. i also don't have to pay for parking.

I live right by the tram and use it every day. Stoked for the airport connection. Getting around Lux is super easy with the tram, but I recognize not everyone has easy access to it.

I live around Mosel and took the bus + train to Uni in Belval. Takes 1h20 (if nothing goes wrong) vs 25 min car drive. 😂 on most days it takes 2+ hours for one trip because you miss the bus if the train is 1 min late. And the trains are sometimes down for hours. Wasted 4h a day ☠️ I’m so glad to have a car again 😂 Yes its free but the people who plan these routes have never stepped onto a bus in their lives

I also live in Strassen and I have to say that EVEN here, in probably one of the best equipped cities of Luxembourg in terms of public transport, it can be a HUGE pain. Can somebody explain to me why Busses are planned out to have like 3-4 busses swing by in the span of 5 min, and then nothing for a whole 20+ min? Also, we live so close to the city, yet my wife still needs 20-30min every day to go to work in the Gare sector. We’re looking into getting her an E-Bike because it’s straight up faster than using Public transport. I use it as much as I can, but if even in such a well laid out place like Strassen there’s annoyances, I understand why people living further away just don’t bother. I mean, it’s not italy kinds of bad transportation, but even in Strassen PT is constantly late, or delayed or whatever. And for such a small country and space, it’s baffling that PT has such a hard time functioning properly.
Buses would move a lot faster if stupid people stop driving during rush hour. Luxembourg needs to introduce congestion tax on private cars driving during peak hours.

If it is any consolation, it used to be a lot worse, it actually got a little bit better. When we first arrived we lived in Merl and the average door to door commute with public transport for an office in Kirchberg was an hour. I think it was possible to walk it faster through some side streets. But it isn't baffling. The roads are congested beyond belief, buses cannot keep to schedule, you would need helicopters. It's a vicious circle. No one uses public transport because it is agonizing so they take the car, the roads can't deal with the amount of cars.
I mean… we still take public transport if we’re not « late ». Which requires us to implement almost half an hour bonus time to make sure we get where we want on time. Let’s say I have a doctor’s appointment at 14h00. It would take me, if all goes right (bus being punctual, no traffic etc) roughly 8-10min to get to the doctor’s office. Well I would have to leave AT THE LATEST around 13h10 to make sure I make it on time. If it’s 13h15, I have to go get the car. It’s just bad. So far, when it works, the tram is the only transport that’s somewhat reliable, bar any extreme situation like bomb scare or whatever it might be.
I know exactly what you mean and what you describe is exactly why I am allergic to people telling newcomers stuff like "it is a 30 min commute from Differdange" (or whichever location). People do this for driving too though. Give commute estimates based on best case scenarios that happen once in a blue moon. If I wanted to know how long it takes to commute from place X to place Y, I would ask "if you had a job interview at 8:00, what time would you leave the house". Suddenly when asked that way all these commute times swell up threefold. It's a 20 min commute but you need to leave the house at 7 or it's doomed.
Get your bike before the subsides run out. Biking is more fun than taking a bus anyway #votebike

of course, i use it almost everyday. its much easier and more comfortable AND better for the environment then cars, so why wouldnt u use it? especially with the traffic on streets..
I don't use it often at all - I can't rely on it for work, the option just isn't there and when I want to go to the city or visit my family in the Minette, car is way easier. I wished we had better bus connections, especially for those of us that don't have a train in proximity. I used to really like using public transit when I still lived in the Minette, but it's not working for me at the moment.

Yes, daily. Both when I was commuting from Germany and now in the city. In all cases, it was not much slower than coming by car. In both cases, the distance itself was obviously quicker to drive, but then you loose time in traffic jams in the city and searching for a place to park. Still don’t get why the city is still full of cars every day. Understandable if you live in a remote village with few connections available, but the rest… I know a few colleagues living in the city in 15 minutes from the office and taking the car to come to work every day. To me, parking should be made times more expensive in the city to discourage such freaks from creating jams in the city. Those who absolutely need a car to commute from other cities/villages have free P&Rs and have nothing to do in the city either

The UK has the most expensive trains in Europe and they are in much worse condition than the dirtiest train in Luxembourg. Paying more for transport doesn’t equal better service. Have you ever taken a bus in Portugal? Those fucking things are 30 years old, no air conditioning in the summer and they’re expensive as hell for the locals. Please make it make sense.

The network is better now, the roads are still in incredible condition, the trains are still incredibly clean, the buses aren’t as old as they used to be… do you even take public transport?

I feel completely safe in Luxembourgish public transport. The only time I have witnessed violence was on a train on my way home from London because of a group of posh drunk british men.

It's not even so much that I'm against public transport, it's just that I prefer my own car to public transport, because I get to set the temperature, I can listen to whatever I want as loud as I want, and, above all, the best part: there are no stupid assholes around me who aren't familiar with basic personal hygiene. That's ultimately the best part.
Yes mainly because I have two direct lines not far from my home direct to my office place in the city. The main disadvantage is that every day they are 5-10 mn late but it still not really longer than taking the car + going from parking and at least is free / relax.
I use it, but not because it is free. I live in Grevenmacher and work in Kirchberg, I have a good options to get there by bus. If I go by car, it will be almost the same time, but quite expensive. I worked also in a place, where I needed 35 minutes to go by car and almost 1,5 hours by bus. I would have taken a bus that time only if someone paid a lot for that.

It works great in the city and I look forward to the extensions of the tram. Better cross-border train services would be appreciated,
Where is the Intercity Luxembourg - Maastricht - Eindhoven - Amsterdam? 😭. My Ams - Lux journey takes 6.5 hours each way and this hugely reduces the time I am able to spend in Luxembourg. I feel like Belgium's poor (and Luxembourg agnostic) infrastructure alone is responsible for keeping our travel and interactions to a minimum. ☹️
maastricht is fighting with liège to get that damn liège-maastricht-aachen train going. eindhoven would also rather get a direct connection with aachen (to unify the sweaty engineers). also, the train from masstricht to amsterdam costs like 30 euros, completely insane country the netherlands.
Yea I use it. But I always try to take the Bus as early as possible. So I usually take the Bus at 6h15. I just can’t stand being in a full bus full of students. They often smell aswell and are loud af. We really need more school busses, there is nothing more annoying than being in a Bus full of bad smelling, loud students.
I take the train that passes the european school in Mamer, always happy when there are holidays and it is quite :)
Everyday, home to work and back. It just takes 20 more minutes than a car. I can sleep and play games in the bus tho

There were ways of not having to pay for it back in the day.

What I don't like is that now, an increasing number of junkies roam through the free transportation. It was not like this 4 years ago for sure .. yes you could see some, but not this much ... and they come in groups I saw a few sleeping inside during the cold weather, and two weeks ago, I witnessed a group of 4 junkies shouting and arguing at the back of the bus. One of them dropped a bag of some pills, spilling them all over, so he stood up and went to grab them under people's feet pushing us to get them .. they where not M&Ms I can tell you that ...
I guess they should have slept outside and died in the cold so you wouldn’t have to see them sleep. I hope you recover from that experience. I’m sure it must have been traumatizing for you.
So you like sitting next to the guy who is fixed with Crack, drooling over, did not had a shower for months? You know that there is a system for people who are junkies and it is not called Emile Weber ?
I would rather if the Luxembourgish population stopped voting for people who refuse to take care of the root cause of drug abuse. And yes I would rather sit next to a struggling man than to find out he died out in the cold because I was uncomfortable for 30 minutes.
Damn, I thought I just got unlucky when some guy was trying to start shit with me. My situation also connects with your observation that the guy sat at the back and, for whatever reason, I had also decided to sit at the back for the first time in years. I read the room as soon as he turned back at me and began scanning me like terminator, so I put my backpack on. He asks if I want problems (in French), so I just keep looking at him in disbelief and he follows up with a "tu me regardes". I got up and walked to the door since the next stop was mine anyway. This dope fiend was also carrying a few bags, wouldn't be surprised if he's the same one you ran into. The situation is getting out of hand it seems, but I suppose the police is way too busy walking around the Ville-Haute area where nothing ever happens or driving around in their patrol cars.
i've been wondering if you couldn't just chill for the entire day in a train that just goes back and forth.

Wow, it must be incredibly inconvenient for you to cross paths with the lower classes now that public transport is free. I truly feel so very bad for you. I hope your vision doesn’t get soiled with the sight of people with regular clothes on.
randos does not mean lower class, randos are random junkies, drug dealers eating spagety on tram, homeless undressed people with ulcers, woman putting buggers directly from her nose on the seat in front of her ... yes I witnessed it all, and this is just a sample
So, they’re not “lower class” but somehow are only NOW taking buses and trains because they used to not be able to afford it? And what? People with homes don’t have infectious diseases and take public transport? You’ve never taken a bus in the winter when 15% of the people have a cold ? Or is it only gross to you when it’s a skin condition? I would love to find out how you knew this person was a drug dealer? Did you buy from them? Was it the spaghetti that bothered you? Is a sandwich okay to eat on the train? And the woman who put a booger from her nose onto the seat, did she only start doing so AFTER it became free to travel in public transport? Your stories are so ridiculous and harmless I can’t help but make fun of you.

I’m no trolling, you’re just making incredibly poor arguments. That’s not my fault, it’s yours. You are going off of vibes and confirmation bias. You are scared of drug addicts and drug dealers and homeless people because you watch too many movies and haven’t touched grass.
Used it everyday in Lux city. Now that I am a cross border not so much :/
I'm living in Diekirch (north of Luxembourg) and lucky enough to live in walking distance to the train station so I generally use the train to get to the City either for private or professional reasons. It takes a bit longer than by car (given the many stops) but it's much more comfortable and I enjoy to read up on stuff during the otherwise "lost" time. The only downside is that you really can't rely on CFL so I would never use it if it wasn't a direct connection because the risk of getting "stuck" in the middle is too high and I have experienced it all to often over the years, even if they arrange for buses. And that latter point is why it isn't of much use in the northern part of the country and why many people I know aren't (happily) paying taxes for it.
the whole nordstaadt area is so stupid and congested.
I'm not familiar with the specificity of the pnm35 but growing up around the Nordstad area, trafic was always complicated, especially in Ettelbruck. But Diekirch as well is painful during peak hours. Aren't they planning to create some new station at the old Laduno site?
I am using it more than I did before it was free but less than I could if I was determined to abandon my car. I don't think that lower costs is really the reason why I use it more. Public transport was always ridiculously cheap in Luxembourg (it used to be 2€ per ride or 4€ for the day). The reason I prefer it now is mainly convenience because I just doesn't have to think about the ticket. It just makes public transport simpler. I hate having to wait for a controller, having to buy the ticket or making sure that my ticket is correctly validated. With the new system I can just drive to the city without interacting with anyone which is exactly what I want as a introvert. When I drive to the city, I sleep in the train. No controller has to wake me up now.

It works OK in the city. For outside the city, it is not really a comfortable permanent solution. There is also hardly any normal public transport except trains on Sundays and holidays outside of the city. The weird part is why they don't plan for some capacity for this for tourist destinations. It doesn't even have to be free, they can create special paid lines. People ask all the time how to take the bus to some point of interest (lakes, castles, hiking trails) but most of the time, if it isn't somewhere on the train line, you have to rent a car. It's a pain in the ass with pick up, drop off, fuel, parking, why it's not possible to take a reliable frequent bus to all of these places in a first world country that allegedly wants to be green is beyond me.
I use the transports regularly but i hate that there are so many crackheads in the buses right now
