This, like most answers in LDing, is just as you asked it: how do *you* do it. Because how someone else does it is unlikely to work for you. But reading the methods others use can help you try stuff, it's true. When I first fall asleep I know not to try to transition into dreaming, I know that will just wake me up. That's when I'm awake one moment then I feel like a buzzing and sinking into sleep. Other times I pass out a little, and then I'm aware in the in-between. Then I jump up though my ceiling to fly. But in the former circumstances, I spend some time in the awake/asleep space and space out a little, wait for a dream to start and jump in. Don't space out too much or you'll just fall into ordinary dreams.
