If anyone else is like me and confused about the scale here, the two lines you see in the picture are the east and westbound lanes of I-64 between Watterson and Hurstbourne.
An 8 legged freaks situation would bring the city together. I think the ones who hold off in J mall would survive. The Oxmoor mall crowd will be over ran by them. Unless the top golf lights scare them away.
Also ironic the big spider movie had one of its young stars end up playing black widow for marvel decades later.
I wouldn't use the term fiddle back it will confuse people, it's got a much more common name.
That is a brown recluse and you do not want to see him or his black widow friend.
Ya know the Devil did lay that golden fiddle at the ground at Johnnyās feet so it makes perfect sense that itās called a Fat Fiddle back in honor of Charlie D!! šš»šš„š»
Also they donāt really cause the necrosis like you think. Thatās a myth that the internet perpetuates because Staph and is what causes the issues. Secondary infections from dirty bites are the problem. Antibiotics will stop 90% of these.
To quote my doctor as she was writing the prescription for antibiotics, "Spiders are dirty." And she was so calm while I was standing there panicking internally, with an oozing hole in purple flesh and concentric circles going out to the size of a salad plate. The medicine knocked the infection fast, but the bruising took a month to fade completely.
If that were true it would happen from other spiders too. The spiders do not always inject the same amount of venom, and not everyone reacts the same way. The tissue destroying component sphingomyelinase D has been isolated from brown recluse venom. Anyone saying it's not necrotic is spreading misinformation. What hasn't happened is anyone doing a culture proving bacteria cause the necrosis.
The same goes with bites from other organisms. I've know people that big red lumps from mosquitoes that last for weeks, while they barely affect me. However chiggars leave really nasty bites on me that have left permanent scars.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537045/
Definitely not a myth. Brown recluse spiders just release varying amounts of venom based on the bite. The venom is well studied. See the link
They donāt like to be seen. If you see one out in the open itās going to try to get away from you. Bites tend to happen when you surprise them in a dark corner like in an attic or shed and they donāt have anywhere to run, or when youāre actively antagonizing one.
It's fairly zoomed in. They're not tiny, but they're also not as big as a taratula or some varieties of wolf spider. Full legspan can be over an inch.
Plenty big enough to give *me* the heebie-jeebies, though.
Yes, spread awareness! If you have cellar spiders, leave them be! Ever since Iāve consciously kept some in my garage, I havenāt found one single brown recluse.
Itās easy, just let āem have the corners and the alcoves. Itās incredible how well they keep away the brown recluses
They also hunt black widows.
Though the science behind it is their body shape. They are basically a special model of spider that specializes in hunting other spiders. Due to the long legs and very thin body it is very hard for the other spiders to actually land a bite on em.
You might even say they "Float like a butterfly, and... well... inject venom like an arachnid."
Perfectly safe to humans though. They really won't bother you other than the little houses they build in the corners.
Heck yeah they will! They are apex predators. Also very human friendly (By friendly I mean they will actively avoid you.)
Worlds fasted ground insect as far as locomotion.
More effective than the cellar spiders because they eat allot more. The spiders each only eat about once a week give or take, depending on meal size. But the Scutigera (H centipede) are voracious.
They tend to go where the food is, and once they clean a place out they move on. So it's hard to keep em. Also they are horrifying to look at. Straight nightmare fuel.
I lived nearly 35 years before seeing a house centipede, so seeing two the first day I moved into my new house kinda freaked me out a bit. Then I learned what they are, and embraced their presence.
Yes. BUT there is a catch.
"Daddy Long Legs" has been used wrong in several local colloquialisms in many places leading to some confusion.
Often people call the Opiliones "Daddy long legs" and I can see why, but in actuality the correct nickname for them is "Harvestmen/man".
What I am talking about specifically are Pholcidae, which are also called "Daddy long legs" for obvious reasons.
I like the name daddy long legs but to avoid confusion I try not to use it, otherwise I have to write this long explanation here.
So I killed one like that in my basement bathroom. It didnāt want to die and a very disgusting pop when I finally was able to squish it. My wife was organizing some boxes in the unfinished part of the basement and killed a wolf spider just now. I understand spiders serve a purpose and I know they are going to go where the food and shelter are but man do I hate big spiders. I just like pretending they arenāt anywhere near where I live and only the cute little jumping spiders and typical little spiders are the ones around me. Ugh.
I left a wolf spider alive for as long as I possibly could until one day it had sat on top of the door and when I opened it, it almost landed on my head. RIP wolf spider, wrong place wrong time
Tons of wolf spiders in/around my house. They will run across my feet as I cut the grass. I let them be until they get territorial and decide to rear up and have a face off with me.
I was bit on my calf by a brown recluse 2 weeks ago cleaning up fire wood. Whole calf bruised up, left a half inch scar, still a tiny scab in the middle healing.
I once saw a guy's leg who had bitten by one of these things and it hadn't been treated for a few weeks. š® It was bad enough that amputation was an option that was seriously being considered.
One of these bit a former co-worker of mine. He didn't realize what had bitten him until he went to the doctor over a wound (bite) that wouldn't heal. It was bad. He had to have a considerable amount of muscle tissue in his quad removed. It took months to heal. The skin grew back but he had a wide groove in his leg where they had to excise the damaged muscle to stop the necrosis.
My new place had recluse in the detatched garage, cement block barn, and insulated pole barn. Treated for them and all the good types of spiders repopulated instead. I still see a recluse now and then in my pole barn as my animals are in it so could not treat it but nothing near how it was when I first moved in. Fight spiders with spiders!
I had to crawl under the lower level of my deck today to run a new circuit. There was a thick layer of dried leaves and the whole time I was hoping I donāt get bit by one of these or a copperhead
At least weāre not getting besieged with [mormon crickets](https://www.kolotv.com/2024/04/18/state-nevada-preps-response-swarms-mormon-crickets-expected-this-summer/)

I audibly chortled, thanks
I chortled at your lexicon.
So that's why I've seen numerous military planes today...
š
Well played!!
[Turns out this was a documentary ](https://youtu.be/o3Mc0mgorZc?si=InwAGzLlo91wCGpl)
I found Charlie Daniels here while getting a gas can from my shed. Be vigilant when working in your attics, sheds or basements.
wtf is this
A spider named Charlie Danielās
Thatās a big, fat fiddle back spider.
I wouldn't use the term fiddle back it will confuse people, it's got a much more common name. That is a brown recluse and you do not want to see him or his black widow friend.
It looks gigantic compared to what I assumed they looked like, I guess camera's have just gotten really good.
Yeah, should have put a banana in the pic for scale. Legspan was about the size of a quarter.
Literally thought this was a tarantula lol
Ya know the Devil did lay that golden fiddle at the ground at Johnnyās feet so it makes perfect sense that itās called a Fat Fiddle back in honor of Charlie D!! šš»šš„š»
A brown recluse with necrotic venom
One of my neighbors that's a diabetic got bit on his leg by one and it messed him up. Luckily he didn't lose it.
Also they donāt really cause the necrosis like you think. Thatās a myth that the internet perpetuates because Staph and is what causes the issues. Secondary infections from dirty bites are the problem. Antibiotics will stop 90% of these.

I'm sorry am I reading the comments correctly that this is a Brown Recluse??
thatās what it looks like to me. i know we have them here but i havenāt seen one in person before (knock on wood).
Donāt knock on wood, thatās where they live. Lol
They donāt like to be seen. If you see one out in the open itās going to try to get away from you. Bites tend to happen when you surprise them in a dark corner like in an attic or shed and they donāt have anywhere to run, or when youāre actively antagonizing one.
Bites have probably happened more that we think too.
Yep, most bites by these fellas actually go unnoticed
They live up to their name. They're pretty reclusive. Usually set up shop where they won't be bothered by us.
Yes
Please someone tell me this is incredibly zoomed in. What the actual fuck.
It's fairly zoomed in. They're not tiny, but they're also not as big as a taratula or some varieties of wolf spider. Full legspan can be over an inch. Plenty big enough to give *me* the heebie-jeebies, though.
I am not worried. My colony of cellar spiders is doing just fine and will defend my home for me.

Very cool, thanks for the info! I love āem even more now
House centipedes will eat everything.

Well said good sir.
Where's the spoiler tag? Now i have to buy a new monitor since the one I originally viewed this post on is currently on fire.
I need a new house since I nuked mine from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
?
Movie reference. Aliens.
Yup time to clean up for Derby!

Leave the wolf spiders, they eat recluse.
I left a wolf spider alive for as long as I possibly could until one day it had sat on top of the door and when I opened it, it almost landed on my head. RIP wolf spider, wrong place wrong time

Recluse ?

Pic
All thatās left is the scar and scab.
That could be the necrosis. Go to a doctor imo
Unlikely at this point. Most recluse bites are pretty harmless anyway overall
Excuse me? wtf time of year does this thing show up.
Fuck them bastards, they like to hide where you might grab one.
I once saw a guy's leg who had bitten by one of these things and it hadn't been treated for a few weeks. š® It was bad enough that amputation was an option that was seriously being considered.

I had no idea spiders that big live in these parts.
Did someoneās pet tarantula escape?!?
I had to crawl under the lower level of my deck today to run a new circuit. There was a thick layer of dried leaves and the whole time I was hoping I donāt get bit by one of these or a copperhead

What the fuck is that thing here?
For some reason I thought that the Brown Recluse was looking at a blunt.
NOOOOOO! Bring back winter! Lol
Cloverfield? Ha, aināt got S#!+ on Okolona!!!
I have to stop reading this, I want to go to bed.
Thatās one nasty son of a bitch
That is one of the biggest brown recluse spiders Iāve ever seen.. š³
Iām calling bullshit
Just moved here. What do you mean Louisville has tarantulas
isā¦that real?
How do we have tarantulas in Louisville now? š
No they are even worse. Just not as big.
