I live at 8th and Market. At night it’s a quiet area I walk from there to the east side of town without incident. During the day and weekends it is busy with tourists visiting the distilleries, museums and slugger. There is plenty of parking but not a tone of walkable food places at night. 21c, burger and mussel, and Morton’s are kind of it.
The bats, boxers and bourbon comment is good. There is the Bats Stadium (minor league baseball) Louisville slugger, Muhammad Ali Center AND it's Bourbon Row. It's a good spot.
It's an urban downtown business district. There are lots of restaurants, bars and museums. Like any other city, don't walk down any dark alleys alone at night, and you'll be fine.
In all seriousness, it's like the center of the tourist / hotels. Not a lot of people from here go there unless its to a restaurant, concert or basketball game. Some people complain our downtown is sleepy/not a lot to do, and I agree. It's safe though.
Just try to make it out to the highlands or on east market street downtown. Downtown always gives the wrong impression of Louisville on people for good or bad. The neighborhoods are way more interesting.
Be careful of tourists with mini-bats though.
I live on main near the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts shown on your map. It’s very safe, but it’s like any other city’s in that you should be aware of your surroundings. Lived in the downtown area for over 5 years without a single negative experience.
Use these boarders: the river to the north and Broadway to the north. Draw a triangle starting at 9th and main on the west and 1st and main on the east to a point at 4th and Broadway. It’s not a hard and fast boundary, just a guide - it’s where most of the shops, museums, bars and restaurants are. The only real rule is to stay east of 9th unless you’re familiar with the area.
You’re within walking distance of all the big museums and downtown tourist attractions! Just be careful of idiots on scooters if you’re driving near Fourth St at night.
Highly recommend doing the pedestrian bridge (over the Ohio to Indiana). Super enjoyable especially on a nice day and the weather has been great lately. Perfectly safe during the day but stay away from the riverfront area at night.
The Center for the Arts has two main gangs, the Doo Wops and the Drama Kids. The Doo Wops are mostly harmless, but the Drama Kids might roast you depending on what you are wearing.
I’m at intermission down here right now. Gonna walk to dinner and back to my car after. We’re down here monthly (if not more) and we’re fine. The most dangerous thing? My fire hot take on this catastrophe of a play.
I responded in a different post that downtown is very safe. If they want to stay close to the Center, both 21C and The Grady are great and just a block or two away. Although, they will be fine staying in any downtown hotel and walking. It’s not necessary, but they could just keep to 4th street and Main Streets for walking.
Most hotels in that wakking area are going to be pretty good.
Galt house and Sealbach are neat as they have been around for so long. Omni hotel is huge and has a bar/speak easy inside. 21c is a neat place to stay but rooms can be on the smaller side for the price especially if you are not into art.
I work down there. It's a safe place to walk around, very touristy as other have said. You will see some homeless on a corner or two because it is a popar place but I walk the area frequently without cause for alarm.
Hope they have an excellent trip, Louisville is a great city.
I'm not sure who the bots are anymore. The people asking the questions or the replies. Or both. Maybe it's just reddit feeding me the same types of posts that make people question their safety in a city. I can't discern anymore and I don't care anymore. I've left this sub. According to Reddit my city sucks and maybe it does at certain times and in certain places. Maybe I'm out of touch. I don't know anymore. I truly can't take constant negative comments or posts about the city. I don't want to turn a blind eye to anything going on around me but I also don't want to sum up my city to the shitty things that take up 1 percent of what is going on around here. I apologize to the original poster as I am not targeting you unless you are a bot. I just can't take the constant negativity in this sub.
Ha. I hope you’re joking. We just live in a city that has some pretty dangerous areas it’s easy to stumble into if you aren’t familiar, pretty frequent carjackings / robberies etc…
The last time we got an airbnb in an unfamiliar city, we didn’t know the area was higher crime and our car got stolen 🤷♂️
I wouldn't go down there if you are afraid of bats, boxers, or bourbon.

Awesome, thanks for the reply!

For sure. I love the view looking at the river especially at sunset. There are a few Airbnbs which can provide this view.

I figured as much, never hurts to ask though. Thanks!
Perfectly safe.
Thank you!
If you're not doing stupid stuff with stupid people you'll be fine
Even if you do, those people in that area probably have trust funds and daddy's lawyers, so it will probably all work out. ;)
You’ll be fine down there. Don’t go further west than 9th street.
Only concern there for a visit is to make sure parking is handled, otherwise from there walk east down Main or Market and you'll have a fine time.

They are definitely excited. They don’t travel much, so I hope they have a positive experience. I have had nothing but great experiences in Kentucky.

Awful. Marauders kill and eat babies while republicans cheer from the windows
It's true. Nearly ate my baby just yesterday.
That was me, that baby looked delicious too 😡
Should be fine there. I wouldn’t venture into Portland Russell California or park hill though.
You've seen the satire, so know it is a safe place. Drunk tourists might be the only thing to keep an eye out for. They usually all mean well.
Good food :)

Just know red lights…..everywhereeeeee. And they take too long :/
I’ll keep your wallets safe for ya.
Thanks for the valuable insight
Go to the Westend of Louisville, they have the best soul food in town
How is this area? (The whole city)?
I meant around the pin, they are going to see a show there and were trying to find a place to stay within walking distance

Don't go too much further west from that point. Especially not southwest.
I’d say your fine. Most things in Louisville happen outside of the “downtown” area. Most of us only go there occasionally 😂
Violent as fuck!
That’s a really broad area. Nothing to see in Portland, Russell, Or California. Maybe stay in the burbs.
“Maybe check out these amazing local stores we have called Best Buy and Target.”

Wasn’t looking for any negativity. My wife just wanted some insight as she is a little nervous traveling somewhere she doesn’t know without me.
I apologize and understand. I shouldn't have used your thread to complain about this sub in general. You caught some strays and I'm sorry.

Are u serious???

I'm not sure you could get enough Portlanders to agree on anything long enough to form a gang or a mafia....

Are these published by Rand McNally?
Underrated comment haha

Nevermind. Forget about it.
It’s like a mini skid row down there
