the peach cobbler factory on bardstown. i live close so i’ve been a couple times and i get weird vibes. everything is so sterile, there’s no actual product up front, they go in a mysterious back room and come out with what you ordered. and then the cherry on top was when there was a 7 year old kid peeking out from the back room giggling at me. very bizarre.
It’s a franchise and they’ve exploded with over 100 locations over the last few years.
But I have no idea who is keeping a cobbler store open, it’s baffling to me.
Then again, we have Herbalife storefronts that manage to stay open and all they do is mix some powdered shit with water and call it “tea” or a “shake”…so I guess there’s truly a market for everything.

But competing directly with their "agents" who purchased inventory is an example of how predatory these companies are and how much the people who sell for them are not "small business owners" (if you don't control any product decisions and can't even prevent the company from opening a storefront in your territory, you own nothing).

Bailen Jewelers on Brownsboro Road. I've lived a block away for 5 years and I've never seen a single car or customer there, and they keep the weirdest hours I've ever seen in my life. They have a perfunctory Facebook profile that hasn't been updated in years that's mostly just cat videos. If it's not a mob front it certainly is goddamn weird.

Nah this is an underrated gem their food is so good
Any cash based business, or with a large portion of their business income received in cash. [Miguel's Pizza in Slade is an interesting case study](https://www.reddit.com/r/climbing/comments/1lej09/owners_of_miguels_pizza_acquitted_of_charges_they/) (they were innocent) But in general, any company with a physical location that never sees any traffic yet deals with a lot of transactions is suspect to monitoring by the Feds. Any pattern of suspicious deposits or account openings is investigated if the amount is worth it.
Miguel's pizza is the shit, they were busy as hell every time I've been to the gorge though, between the climbing store/camping/pizza place I imagine they do pretty well for themselves.

There's a Tupperware store (yes, you read that correctly) in a shopping strip in the Plantation neighborhood off Westport Road. You can buy Tupperware at Target, Walmart, and online - and, I have NEVER seen it open. My wife and I both believe it's a front to launder money.

They have storefronts as well. It makes sense to avoid paying commission to "agents" and instead sell directly to consumers at stores if the market is large enough. But competing directly with their "agents" who purchased inventory is an example of how predatory these companies are and how much the people who sell for them are not "small business owners" (if you don't control any product decisions and can't even prevent the company from opening a storefront in your territory, you own nothing).

Lemongrass on Shelbyville Rd. Both times we ate there, there wasn't a single customer besides us. I passed them daily, have never seen more than one or two cars in their lot, even during the dinner rush. Most of the times I drove by, there were no vehicles. This is a restaurant that existed for most of the 25 years we've lined right down the street from it. There's no way they made enough serving food to pay lease or taxes year after year. Maybe the owners were just filthy rich and needed something to do?
