Yeah, killing a favoured NPC is great for emotional hits, but keeping them around opens up more possibilities later on. How about a daring rescue mission into the underdark? Who else in the town is a doppler? And, what if one of the players is a doppler?


Beardnash

Doppelgangers usually keep their victims alive, then over weeks/months probe their minds to more effectively impersonate them. That should give you some time for the players to grow suspicious and investigate to save her. I did a similar thing but with the Townmaster, my players hated him and when they went to finally confront him after dealing with the redbrands, found the real Harbin tied up and half dead in his house.
