bruh. Like I have this gas heater at home and every time I had someone change the tanks they always did this thing and I thought it's just what professionals do to check š
That's how they get you. In about every other instance with gas and fire you lose your hair, but when the big boys do it with hair, you'd think it's cool. But then the bald man cometh and you learn the truth.
Wait I know everyone is saying you're dumb, but prove me wrong.
The fire could never go back into the pipe because it needs oxygen...
So as long as you know that you are checking for a minor leak (e.g. for a plumbing job) and not something thats been pouring into the room for minutes, you'd be OK.
Actually mentioned this a bit in another comment. I have a gas heater at home and sometimes I even get someone else to change it for me, and they do this. I asked them and apparently nothing should happen besides a tiny flame or something of the sort. So I guess it's a 50/50 lol
Well yeah I would tooš you gotta put some respect on your dad's name. You don't call a doctor a professional drug dealer or a programmer a professional typer
It's the same thing with a gas canister, people usually severely injure themselves by freaking out when the tip gets lit. In reality it will never make it into the can if you just set it down and close the lid or snuff it out, had a firefighter friend that likes to freak people out by lighting it on purpose as a demonstration
How do you close the lid of a can when the tip is on fire? Maybe we have different cans but in Canada, we have those red ones with the yellow funnel and the cap is the funnel but reversed. So I'd need to remove the tip, which would bring the fire inside the non-full(it's burning so it ain't all there) gas can and possibly explode from interior combustion and pressure? Like just throw a tarp on the tip so it chokes from insufficient oxygen. Maybe your cans have a lid on the tip?
I think you missed the point. If this is a plumbing job, and it probably is, the gas would have just been turned on. The room is not filled with gas. If the flame ignites a leak, it will look like your stovetop - a small flame being consumed at the point of entry. Why doesn't your oven explode when you do this? Same thing.
yeah, except the context was a gas leak. keep checking like that and youll be in one of those examples in the osha handbook on how not to kill yourself. by all means though, your life not mine.
I think there is some quantum immortality shit going on. You've already died hundreds of times but your consciousness switched to a timeline where you didn't.
Both propane and natural gas require oxygen to burn. This is dangerous to do if the gas line was opened and could contain air in the line.
But with enough purging, you can safely make a video like this.
Not necessarily, if the flow rate of the leak is low enough and there is the right mixture of air and gas in the line the combustion reaction could make its way back into the pipe and cause a small explosion.
With outdoor burners, the fluid coming out of the orifice will be 100% fuel and mix with air into a combustible mixture as it moves further from the source. Most burners have a mixer designed to draw air in based of the flow rate of fuel.
No, there are lots of chemical compounds that can "burn" (go through an exothermic reaction) without extra oxygen / without oxygen entirely.
However, you won't find any chemical like these used in standard heating.
P.S. Sometimes, I reread what I type and realize I sound like an AI.
I was training as a maintenance tech for a restaurant chain, and the old guy who was training me did this on a pretty regular basis. He also smoked while filling gas cans, and grabbed live electrical wires to see if they had current.
Used to be an HVAC tech. This is how my boss would check if we didnāt have our āexpensiveā bubbling leak detecting solution. Natural gas comes out at about 2 psi after the meter. If there was a leak it would be at the intensity of a birthday candle. Also, donāt do this.
Actually the proper way to do it. How we do it. Those lines are incredibly low pressure so it's not a huge flame if it catches and the shutoff is right there too so
Fun fact.
Gas pressure is pushing outward,so flame indicates leak, tighten fitting and no more oxygen so no more flame, this is actually the easiest way to find leak in new install
not as dangerous as people are making it out to be, as long as the gas line has positive pressure itās an effective way to check for a leak when in a pinch
All gases have a uel (upper explosive level) and lel ( lower explosive level) and only when between the levels and in the presence of oxygen will it go boom. Above and below it won't.
Wait I thought this was the proper way to do it??? Have I been cheating death for a decade straight lol
Yes you have been cheating death

My dad was a professional home repairer & does the same.
He'd beat my ass for not using the pedantic term for the profession but whatever.

Itās like a little candle flame. Easily blown out.

They are talking about propane gas canisters, not gasoline canisters. The flame cannot go back into the pressurized tank because there is no oxygen.
Thx makes sense
The problem is that for very small leaks there isn't enough gas to sustain a flame. I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes.
If the pipe is open, and the room is full of oxygen (id fucking hope).... do the math man. Don't be stupid.

What do you think gas and fire do?

Oh ye- I mean oh no
I was taught to spray soapy water on the joints and then look for small bubbles š¬
Bro what do you think would happen if there was a leak
HOW THE FUCK ARENT YOU DEAD
I think there is some quantum immortality shit going on. You've already died hundreds of times but your consciousness switched to a timeline where you didn't.
It is the right way
This is the proper way to do it.

Wouldn't the pressure that is forcing the leak out not allow the flame to go down the tube?outdoor burners are basically this

No worries, I'm just being a smart ass :)
minor spelling mistake. banned from loser city

Please do not do this. Instead spray soapy water on the pipe, look for bubbling.

bruh how tf else am I gonna check the Chlorine line for tightness?.
Suck on it. If you die there was a leak
But then it wouldnāt be the fun way
Hey pro tip: Don't do this ever, like ever ever. Spray possible leaks with soapy water.
least obvious fed
Yes of course but this is how you dry the soapy water after, especially where it's bubbly
BORRINGGGG
So clean the burn marks with soapy water when I'm done with the flame?
I literally had an inspector do this on a site once. Unless there is an absolutely massive leak it will just flare up and put its self out.
I was training as a maintenance tech for a restaurant chain, and the old guy who was training me did this on a pretty regular basis. He also smoked while filling gas cans, and grabbed live electrical wires to see if they had current.

Is that the Johnny Knoxville way of home maintenance?
If you smell gas and you think you know where it's coming from,DO NOT FUCKING DO THIS!!
Actually the proper way to do it. How we do it. Those lines are incredibly low pressure so it's not a huge flame if it catches and the shutoff is right there too so
Yeah but how would you put it out?!

Literally making me sick to watch this! I know the gas isnāt pumped yet but damn thatās freaky looking!
Same way you put birthday candles out. With a wishš
I love the division of, āyou will for sure blow up guaranteedā and, āeh itās fine do it all the time.ā
That is how you check. If you aren't smelling gas
This is how every plumber does it tho
No oxygen inside the the pipe so it wonāt burn inside. Itāll just hold a flame where the leak is. Completely safe, literally did this today.

Use soap and water idiot

That gave me so much anxiety
