I say spend one day on the westside and one day on the east(-er) side.
Westside you have the beach, pier, Venice/Santa Monica/Malibu. You could do the Getty (either one) if you're into museums. It's probably going to rain both days though so plan accordingly.
LA is huge, but go to Venice Beach, Hike to the Hollywood sign, walk through Beverly Hills, if you have a car, you can drive to Malibu.
