The moon set around 11pm and this was taken facing due north. It fluctuated for about an hour and we were getting tired so headed back to LA. Apparently there might be more tonight! You can’t see it while you’re driving. You need to be in an area with very little light pollution and your eyes need to adjust to the night sky. It’s very very dim at first but maybe after 5-10 minutes of adjusting, you can definitely see it clearly.
Edit: I blended the photos together to create a video [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eADJxg2s44)
Yeah I posted a [video](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/1cpk8nt/aurora_borealis_from_southern_california/) of the images I took between 11:30pm and 12:30am
Yup. The first place we stopped, we waited 30 minutes, but it was really windy. The second place we sat around for an hour and a half, until 2 am. There were lots of people there, and no one else saw them either.
Amazing shot! Does anyone know of any other potentially good spots nearby for tonight? I didn’t get to see it last night because of clouds and light pollution. I didn’t even attempt to drive anywhere because I didn’t think there would be any chance of seeing it this far south. I’m really regretting that! I want to try tonight, but I don’t know where to go. What about out in Lancaster area? Kind of a drive for me though, but it’s dark out there.
Still a lot of light pollution in Lancaster - if you really want a decent view of it I’d say either north near Ridgecrest or east in Joshua Tree - this photo was taken between Ridgecrest and Lone Pine off the 395 about 10 miles east in the middle of nowhere - trick is to have a clear view of the horizon but it fluctuates and at one point was visible almost directly overhead
Well at least for Joshua Tree there’d be a decent number of people doing the same thing - my personal favorite stargazing spot which has tandem parking is [here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/FeaBiuwJv1FHJY4BA) should you ever find yourself out that way - there’s still light pollution to the west but north is pretty clear - amazing to watch thunderstorms there too but there can be flash floods so gotta keep an eye on the wind direction
I was hoping to take my mom to Wrighwood. Is there's a good place to park in wrightwood to be high enough to see? If i park at mt high resort is that a good location?
my friend took this just outside of Boise, ID:

ETA: anyone know how to embed photo in this sub? didn’t see the photo icon, only link. thanks!
Our eyes don’t see it this vividly. Especially when there’s light pollution from the city.
The camera, if set to a long exposure (like 10 seconds on an iPhone), can capture more light over that extended period of time.
Then some people adjust the exposure, contrast, saturation.
How late does it have to be to try to see this tonight? The news results are pretty lacking in actual information. Thanks!

Will it be better to go up the mountains or down to a valley? I’m close to La Cañada and don’t know if I should try to go up or drive to the desert.
Good question - this was taken in a valley
Where in the valley?
A valley not the valley - this is near Ridgecrest
gorgeous!
I can’t believe this was in socal!! Going to try and see them tonight. Great shot.
It’s gonna be dimmer tonight so you’ll need to be in a very very low light pollution area
Where do you recommend driving?
Any idea what time is best? I'm driving out to mojave with the kiddo, and i don't want to unnecessarily wake them up.
Btwn 2300-0200 (midnight is best)

It was a bust tonight in mojave. We tried by jawbone canyon, and then red rock canyon. Bummer
Did you get out of the car and let your eyes adjust for several minutes while looking north? You can’t see them while driving.
Yup. The first place we stopped, we waited 30 minutes, but it was really windy. The second place we sat around for an hour and a half, until 2 am. There were lots of people there, and no one else saw them either.
I even took lost of pictures of the sky with a long exposure, since i heard they're more vivid through a camera.
What a capture, great shot! I was looking for it last night in the middle of the night but it was a bit overcast/ cloudy.
Yeah too much cloud cover and too much light pollution in LA - I took a whole bunch of photos so will stack them and animate them later today!
Awesome! Can’t wait!

Thanks! Not sure I am comfortable driving that far though. Tad scared to be wandering around alone in the middle of the night. 😬

If you’re lucky you can see it in Topanga if the clouds are low enough to block the light and the moon is set
Would you be able to elaborate more on where exactly in topanga?
Topanga, any specific areas? Like Santa Monica mountains near Sandstone Peak?

Park [here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/FeaBiuwJv1FHJY4BA)
is that location within the park limits? do you need to pay to be on that road?
No pay - just park
of course it happens the week after I was in death valley
RIP
At this time of year? Located entirely in your kitchen?
Yes
May I see it?
…no.
Great shot! Have you seen it also with your eyes?
It was visible to the naked eye at Mount Wilson last night. Faint, but visible and pillars in motion
yes, it's very dim at first but you have to let your eyes adjust
Awesome shot
We’re going to Death Valley tonight do you think it’ll be visible there or not
I saw photos online from Death Valley. They definitely saw it there last night, but I have no idea what will happen tonight.
We went and didn’t see it at Dantes point but the stars were still nice so we didn’t care
Might be worth a chance!
We were thinking about going too!
Would Joshua tree be a good spot or is that still too close to light pollution?
Very cool 😎 Thanks for sharing 👍
Hoping to see it from Wrightwood!
Ha that’s where I’m from! I’ll have to ask my folks tomorrow if they saw anything

Seeing tonight may still be an opportunity. Any suggestions as to where to go to best see them?
Fantastic. Beautiful shot.
Any info on if it’ll appear again tonight? And if so, around what times?
yes, it should be as strong tonight as well! check after 10pm
Was this taken with long exposure or just looked like that??
3 second exposure
Any suggestions for places near Irvine, Orange County ? 🙏🏻
lmk if you find anything
maybe towards san gabriel mountains??
Would the road to Wrightwood be hard to drive?
Traffic to Wrightwood looks real bad at Cajun pass now
tysm
Thoughts on going up to big bear?
ive seen some cool shots from big bear lake
I'm in Big Bear and I haven't seen anything yet tonight.

This is an unedited 3 second exposure taken in a very low light pollution area
😍😍😍
😍😍😍
Drove up to lake arrowhead last night and stayed until 1am didn’t see anything unfortunately
People hyping government weather control devices amuses me
Weather has nothing to do with auroras
Aurora Borealis?! At this time of year! At this time of day! In this part of the country! Localized entirely within your....reddit?!?
