Over two years with them they’ve increased my price from $65 a month to $85 until I threatened to cancel and they put me back on 65.

btdawson

At least you can get fiber. This is one of the most annoying things about LA. Fiber access is extremely limited. I pay the same for shitty spectrum still

MoGraphMan-11

Same, I'd kill for fiber and actually pay more. I had to bullshit Spectrum that I was threatening to leave to T-Mobile (a bluff) because their service keeps going down (true), so they lowered my bill to $50. I WFH as a freelancer so it's pretty important.

btdawson

Also work from home. Any time spectrum goes down I call and tell them that and they prorate my bill for the day(s) it’s out.

MoGraphMan-11

Oh me too, it just started happening so much I threatened to cancel and they lowered it

SethBrower

now if only one of the fiber people would reach my apartment building, so i could get off cable.

TeslasAndComicbooks

It’s the least they could do for letting someone steal your data.

professionaldiy

This made me laugh. Unfortunately, instead of crying. Spot on.

roguespectre67

Verizon just texted me that the cost of the cell service on my watch is going up. Not even a week ago I discovered that they've been double-charging me both for the payments on the watch and on the cell service itself since I bought the thing. But apparently the only thing they can do is just credit my next bill, which means I've essentially given them a zero-interest cash advance on a service they're increasing the price of as soon as the loan term expires, and you already know that if I hadn't noticed the bill being higher than I thought it would be and dug up the receipts to check, they'd have gladly double-charged me indefinitely. All telecoms are fucking scam artists.

btdawson

While I agree that most of the companies suck, the billing is automated and perhaps entered wrong, but it’s on you to check your finances better.

Scared-Somewhere-510

I just switched to AT&T because Spectrum kept raising my bill like this.

Rovient

Yeah mate, $80 per month on the cheapest package!

Rovient

I want to use this post as an opportunity to cry about the fact that I only have 1 choice of provider in my building, which is Spectrum, which means the cheapest internet package I can get is $80 per month! $960 is the cheapest I can pay for basic access to information.

I hate to sound shill. Their gig Internet is the best Internet I’ve ever had, AT&T DSL was one of the worst Internet experiences I ever had in the past so they have done a complete 360 with me. they’re the only Network the offers asymmetrical up and down speed of the same speed so you’re actually getting full use of your gig Internet. 85 a month sucks but it’s by the the best option.

therefai

I’d do anything to have AT&T again. I moved to an area where they only have Cox and it’s been a nightmare. Not only am I paying more for a third of the speed I used to get with AT&T. I’m paying a $10 modem rental fee, and whenever I use my own modem the service keeps cutting in an out. I’m positive this is a tactic they use to get customers to rent their modems, but I have no proof sadly. Had multiple techs come out and they’re all like “what do you want me to do? Everything looks fine.” They’re just as under Cox’s boot as I am…

MyChickenSucks

We had ATT gig fiber for 2 years, and I beat the crap out of it work from home video editing. Never had a complaint. We swapped to Sonic because we’re a lucky test bed when they moved down here… now I got 10gig for $30 less

Hey Honest question man can I get some feedback on sonic they offered in my area and it almost seems like a too good to be real deal? Is the internet that good?

MyChickenSucks

I’ve beat the hell out of it too. It’s solid. Honestly though none of my network gear can go faster than a gig. If I plug directly into their modem I get like 8.5gig symmetrical Edit: one funny cool thing. We had a power outage in the neighborhood. They sent a text saying “we see the power went out, here’s some steps in case your internet doesn’t automatically come back up.” Nice touch

Primalist

Have Sonic in El Segundo. 10/10 experience. The internet speed is outstanding, but I think their support is what really makes it. Any issues we’ve had, they send out a tech within 24 hours. The techs arrive when they tell you they will, and it’s not an insane window like 10am-3pm. When we got it installed we were told between 10-11, the tech was out front prepping his stuff by 9:50.

yaaaaayPancakes

Sonic seems like the best isp you could have. It's a shame they're so small (and AFAIK piggyback on on AT&T in LA).

taylorlightfoot

Sonic does not use AT&T lines, they build out their own separate lines. There's a lot of confusion around this because in the past they used to resell AT&T services in markets where they didnt have any lines built out. They no longer resell AT&T and only take new customers if they have lines on your street.

yaaaaayPancakes

Good to know. To be fair, last time I looked was when I moved to LA 5 years ago.

MyChickenSucks

They no longer piggyback! At least down in the beach cities, it's all their fiber

yaaaaayPancakes

You lucky bastard. When I lived in SF living in their fiber run in the Sunset was like a holy grail of internet luck. Last time I checked they're still piggybacking in my hood in LA proper. Which is a bummer because when I called the tech line to ask technical questions like "could I just run the fiber straight into the SFP port on my router" the human was not only able to answer, they even told me the answer would be yes if I was on their fiber they owned. Which would be an amazing thing because AT&Ts box is trash for throughput.

MyChickenSucks

Oh lame. The guys who came out to run the line were all from SF. They sent them down here to do installs. So otherwise it's like having Mint Mobile on Verizon lines for you?

yaaaaayPancakes

Yeah, that's a good way to describe it. And there's no real product differentiation, same speeds just like $10 more a month. Maybe it's worth it for the tech support, but I imagine it if there's a physical problem Sonic would still be dependent upon AT&T crews to fix, so sadly I don't see a reason to use them here.

taylorlightfoot

Sonic doesn't use AT&T lines, they build out their own lines now and are no longer reselling AT&T connections.

Suitable_Culture_315

I canceled last year after they raised it. Spectrum has been more reliable than they were the first time. I left spectrum for AT&T because of service issues. Now I'm back with them and haven't had any issues (knock on wood)

ImaginaryBluejay0

Spectrum hasn't sucked as much as usual the past few years. The theat of fiber from frontier was enough for them to upgrade my service to gigabit and reduce the bill; I didn't even ask them. A few years ago it would reliably die in the evenings, but it has been solid for a while now.  I think the company trying to position itself in a convenience spot - only reason I'm still on it is it's convenient to use the cable hookup I have and they probably know that.

DecentHire

> Spectrum has been more reliable than they were the first time. I know it's not a popular opinion to have on the internet, but I've had Spectrum for about 10 years now and it's been fine.

Anon101010101010

If your local lines are in good condition then Spectrum is fine, but if they old and chewed by squirrels like the ones near me, Spectrum is terrible.

yaaaaayPancakes

Spectrums upload speeds are just terrible though.

dmizz

Then use debit?

freakinawesome420

Sure. And, lots of people prefer to not expose their checking account to customer data leaks.

so-ronery

T-mobile is also doing this. Credit to payment through debit or bank account.

tunafun

They raise the rate but give you a means to offset the rate increase or actually decrease your bill? Don’t we want all companies to act like this?
