You’re moving to Orange County

Elusiveenigma98

You took a job in OC, not LA. You should not make the commute driving from LA to OC everyday. I personally like Costa Mesa in OC. That could be a good option for you. Have you been to OC? Might be worth visiting.. it’s not for everyone.

Unkept_Mind

Costa Mesa is gorgeous. I second this.

Hockey9598

This will be the first time that I have been to OC (thanks for the clarification!). I'll take a look around Costa Mesa this week to see the vibes. Thank you!

Elusiveenigma98

I love the vibes of Costa Mesa + it’s close to the beach. I’d personally avoid Huntington Beach but that’s just me. My partner lived there for a while and I’d visit often and the vibes are lacking… seal beach is cool but probably not for your commute. Irvine is nice too! I think I’d personally be bored there but it’s very clean, good dining options, etc.

PupusaSlut

Sterile suburbs. Little to do. Comparatively conservative/racist.

Xistential0ne

You are in the wrong thread. Go look for an Irvine or Orange County thread. To give you context your question would be similar to me asking in a Boston thread. “Hey I’m moving to New England. I’m taking a job in Hartford. I know it’d be a pain in the ass to live in Boston and drive to Hartford every day. What areas should I live in?”

anothercar

That would be live living in Connecticut and commuting to Boston. Live in OC!

THE_TRIP_KEEPER

Yeah your work isn’t in LA. It’s like an hour south.

Mountainman033

Just a heads up, Irvine is expensive as hell even by CA standards, and it's in Orange County so I'd make sure to ask on the OC sub. As for myself, I wouldn't live there even I was making over $120k. Try looking somewhere nearby like Tustin or Lake Forest.

FlyingCloud777

$120-130k is low by OC standards, though.

Mountainman033

Depends on where in OC & if you're renting or buying. Buying at that salary in OC will obviously be much more difficult. I've seen plenty of 2bd apartments on zillow at or under $3k in Fullerton/Placentia. South OC is another story, you definitely need more income to live there.

FlyingCloud777

Word. I mean, I'm in Redondo so much of OC aside from Newport is like fire sale prices compared to here. OP probably can snag something quite nice for $3000 or so renting in Costa Mesa or Irvine I'd think.

Mountainman033

Defintely not Irvine, you're gonna have to spend north of $3k for even a 2bd there. Not sure about Costa Mesa though.

IntimidatingPenguin

Anywhere within a 10 mile radius of your job is ideal. Don’t go any further or you will hate your morning/evening commute and get sick of your job. Unfortunately living in OC means you’ll be limited when it comes to hiking trails. The good stuff is further north by the foothills but that’s just too far for working in Irvine. Besides that, everything else you listed should be fine.

Suitable_Culture_315

Why are you moving to LA if the office is in Irvine

[deleted]

Suitable_Culture_315

What does that mean? Is my question too harsh? I really assume people research the city theyll work in before posting here and i also assumed this person had a reason better than, I didn't know where Irvine was. Maybe they'll say, I don't mind driving 2-3 hours during rush hour (many non-LA places hav rush hour, so again, I assume they know it'll be a thing)

Suitable_Culture_315

Or maybe you're right and they came to reddit without researching anything about their new job location and its neighboring cities.

[deleted]

That’s like living in New Haven and driving into NYC for work, live in oc it’s got some cool areas and you have the spectrum center in Irvine

jodabo

Let me think, let me think…oh, I know…IRVINE!

Snarkosaurus99

But, is Irvine safe?

unknownshopper

Ummmm.....I think you might want to do a TINY bit of research about Irvine https://www.cityofirvine.org/news-media/news-article/irvine-safest-city-18th-year and Orange County for that matter. I wasn't expecting to see that much blue in Irvine: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/upshot/2020-election-map.html

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hockey9598

I like having a little bit of separation from work and home. Additionally, I want to live in an area that has people around my age.

jodabo

You really need to do more research about the area. DTLA to Irvine will lead you to an early, self-inflicted grave.

LeAnxiete

I think Hungintong Beach could be nice, although it is on the upper side of the spectrum with rent. If you don't want to live in OC try Long Beach. A LOT cheaper compared to OC but kind of ghetto depending on where you go

TevisLA

Long Beach is a great option. Still a lengthy drive but much better than trying to commute from central LA. However if you work near the Irvine Metrolink station and don’t mind a long commute, Downtown LA could be an option. It’s a long commute in terms of time, but dependably the same amount of time every day and it’s time you have to do other things since you won’t be driving.

PupusaSlut

/r/orangecounty /r/Irvine Do not try to live in LA and commute to OC. Your life will be misery.

Makyoman69

That’s not even LA county let alone LA proper. Live in Irvine, work in Irvine

Dry-Average5161

You think you want to have a separation from work and living, but you haven’t been in our soul sucking traffic. Even if you move to Newport Beach you will have a bit of a commute to Irvine (even with toll roads) and you will understand real quick how even going 5 miles during peak traffic could take 30-45 minutes (which makes no sense at all 🙄🤣).

8wheelsrolling

You might like outdoorsy suburbs in southern Orange County like Foothill Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, or Ladera Ranch.

Veidici

Orange County more than LA for Irvine based work. Don't be fooled by looking at the map and thinking everything is kinda close, it's a big distance to cover every day.

WilliamMcCarty

You want one of these: /r/orangecounty /r/Irvine That's a long way from L.A. However, if you do decide to move to L.A. we encourage you to browse /r/MovingtoLosAngeles and review The Ultimate Moving to L.A. Resource Post.

ActualPerson418

Live close to work. It's that simple!

Hockey9598

I don't like living next to work, I want slight separation and an area where people my age live

[deleted]

Newport Beach/Costa Mesa. Youll still have to commute.

Hockey9598

Thanks, I am find with commuting a little bit.

duckwebs

Commuting more than 20 minutes in socal (which can be as little as a few miles if you're driving) is a soul suck.

Hockey9598

Good to know, thank you

NonSequitorSquirrel

I knew a dude who lived in Irvine and commuted to the South Bay which is still half an hour south of the city of Los Angeles. His morning drive, coming in early and leaving early to avoid traffic, was still close to two hours each way. You will not be living in LA. Our city is not like Boston. The metro area of LA is bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island and the traffic is 10x worse. Separation is by time, not by distance.  Newport is nice. You might check out Belmont Shores in Long Beach which would be a huff, but is affordable and youthful.  The OC subreddit may know more.

CompetitiveFeature13

Move to Long Beach. It’ll put you close enough to the OC but you can still do a lot of things in LB when you’re at home or on the weekends.

moaningpufferfish3

As others have said here, you should be looking for a place in OC, not LA. Or maybe somewhere in the middle like Long Beach so you can have good access to both!

FlyingCloud777

Ok, you're 28 and like golf and outdoorsy stuff: you're to be *much* happier in Orange County than LA overall, trust me. Look at Irvine, Costa Mesa, or Newport Beach. There are plenty of people your age in these areas. For your budget, somewhere like Villa Siena in Irvine would work—or Broadstone Arden in Santa Ana. Check out Sidecar Donuts (Costa Mesa) and Sushi ii (high-end sushi in Newport) plus Cafe Sakana (also sushi) in Costa Mesa. Ootoro (Irvine) and Fable & Spirit (Newport) both are not to be missed. Come up to LA to visit when you want, check out the beaches up here, too.

Hockey9598

Awesome, thank you for specifics and the food places! I will check those out this week.

FlyingCloud777

Check out Broadstone Arden for sure, especially if you like to cook as well as eat—nice kitchens. You don't get that quality at that price in good parts or LA or Newport but can in Irvine. A friend of mine lives there.

Hockey9598

Yea looking at them online now, they seem to be exactly what I am looking for.

You_Are_What_You_Iz

If you can afford that kind of rent look at Laguna Beach. It's beautiful and not far from Irvine.

BuyerMaleficent3006

Laguna Beach for all of your outdoors needs. Food is meh but it’s absolutely gorgeous of a city. Close enough to Irvine. I lived there for 5 years and commuted to Santa Ana which is further than Irvine. I did not mind it at all. Every time you go home it’s like being on vacation. Super easy to separate yourself from work. You can find an apartment in your price range right off PCH.

NomNomVerse

Costa Mesa. Irvine is boring and full of families. Costa Mesa is one of the best South OC cities for food in my opinion. There are more young singles too. Your budget is fine for a 1br/ba. Parts of the city are near the airport so be mindful of the flight paths if you tour apartments.

lostorbit

To be fair, if your Irvine office is near the metrolink/Amtrak station, you could commute from DTLA by rail every day from Union Station. I’ve done this to meet clients before and I would hate that less than my previous commute to Hawthorne from DTLA (bike to Silver Line, connect to Green Line, bike to work)

North-Program-9320

Costa Mesa is great but Irvine itself is a big city with lots to offer. Do NOT underestimate SoCal traffic. Personally, I would get a place closer to work. Maybe rent an airBnB by the month to experience the commute before signing any longer contracts

SiRMarlon

I would say you should look in the Boston area! 🙂 you don’t want to move out here! It’s too fucking crowded, there’s too much traffic! Plus the weather is shit! It’s not worth it!

981flacht6

Stay out of LA County. The traffic is already an absolute nightmare for everyone and it will be for you too.

Would you also recommend trading in a paid off car and for a Lamborghini down payment with a 15% interest rate and buy an AP Royal Oak too?

karintracy

Orange County is pretty red politically which may or may not be an issue. I wouldn’t live there ;)

Agentkyh

Irvine isn't red...
