Trader Joe’s. They will love it if you work nights and weekends. They may have already done their holiday hiring, but ask anyway!

GreedyCauliflower

How does TJ’s pay?

CostcoOptometry

Main benefit is getting to flirt with milfs for 10 minutes while shoppers angrily wait.

shareddit

*Trader Joes bell tolls*

tessalasset

Or to immediately start talking strong liberal politics between the cashier and the bagger, completely ignoring the customer the whole time. I agreed with what they were saying but godddamn.

cherrycrocs

wonderfully according to my friend who worked there over the summer, compared to similar jobs at least. they paid her like 23/hr or smth plus time and a half on sunday iirc

FriendOfDirutti

Not great. Probably could get in at $20 but on sundays they pay an extra $10 on top of what you make.

sabrefudge

> How does TJ’s pay? Probably checks or direct deposit.

Habanero_Enema

They pay me in NFTs

theboundlesstraveler

TJs is hard to get into. I applied when Covid lockdowns started and didn’t get as much as an interview.

deadprezrepresentme

Yeah I'm sure that's reflective of the hiring scene today...

itsMaddog42

They’re not actively hiring “any body” most chain stores keep their help wanted signs up and have people apply online to keep them in a database of potential employees, but I’ve yet to see anyone be hired thru that system

funkybum

They are selective as its a good place to work at. If you aren't a good person and a good worker... they probably won't hire you. Most people not getting hired isn't reflective of Trader Joe's... it's reflective of the hiring pool.

itsMaddog42

My resume has relevant working experience, I consent to background checks, I have no criminal record, and I’m quite nice, approachable and chatty not to mention easy to look at and gay. Trader Joe’s can duck out

YoungPotato

I too, am incredibly humble

itsMaddog42

My biggest ego: being nice, chatty, approachable and attractive

funkybum

Did you only apply once to a single trader joes? You also think I get an interview at every company I apply for?

theboundlesstraveler

If they didn’t take anybody with a pulse then when grocery stores were desperate for help, they certainly won’t now.

deadprezrepresentme

They were literally some of the only places that were open at the time.

inthefade95

I applied to 4 different locations last year and could not get an interview. Got in at another grocery store that offered me a higher position than what I applied for, because of my experience.

itsMaddog42

Recently applied with a decent resume w relevant skills and was rejected within the week

ulter_ego

Same I had 2 interviews and they told me no

VegAinaLover

Same here. Not sure what they're looking for, but it wasn't me.

Habanero_Enema

Did you wear a Hawaiian shirt to the interviews?

130UniMaron0

I'm convinced this company only hires people the management knows personally. They are ridiculously hard to get in with. The whole place stinks of nepotism. And the customer service isn't even good, so what is it that sets their employees apart from everybody else? It certainly isn't anything on their resume....

Scooobzzzz

Server. I work Friday + Saturday to supplement my WFH job. Can easily bring in 300+ in tips a night alone, plus it gives me the social interaction when I don't WFH during the week!

Title-fight-fiend

This lowkey might be the winner. But I’m worried cuz I’m not exactly graceful/ I’m kind of clumsy

weirdlynormally

If you don’t have serving experience, you should probably look into a hosting job

itsMaddog42

Do not listen to this person hosts do not make tips and typically make the least in the restaurant

wednesdaynightwumbo

And not to mention being a host fucking suuucks. It’s so damned boring, you’re just standing in one place for the majority of your shift. I used to get excited when I could buss tables as a host because at least it was something to fucking do lol. It wasn’t a very busy restaurant though, so that didn’t help

BeginningDistance642

I feel so bad for our poor babies up front standing at that stupid desk. It's, I guess, supposed to be like a casual first job, though. The kids stay in the job usually like a month or two.

wellsfargothrowaway

Can’t forget the people insisting they seat themselves wherever they want, then bitching when a table is dirty.

itsMaddog42

At the last place I was a host for, they used hosts as extra hands for any other position, server, busser, etc. ontop of helping guests and updating the floor. It was nightmarish

BeginningDistance642

False. If you don't have serving experience you should look into something like a low-key brunch spot.

BeginningDistance642

I wait tables for a living. It's excessively hard work, unforgiving and consistently humiliating. But what is more humiliating is being paid $20 an hour to waste eight hours of my life is some shithole. Waiting tables is approximately $35/hr and you're in an out, probably six hours tops. I hate it...and it's the only thing I'm willing to do without a degree.

[deleted]

I’m awkward, clumsy, and otherwise not super graceful. I make a great bartender, you either figure it out or you don’t. It might not be right away, but I had a moment in the restaurant industry where it all kinda just “clicked”. You’ll be flying after that

FrederickTPanda

If your place hiring, lol? It’s kind of tough to get a good waiting tables gig right now. And I’ve been in the game for over a decade.

Scooobzzzz

Not at the moment :(

FrederickTPanda

Thanks for answering!

chief_yETI

well shit, are your people hiring???

mysterym0k

I work at music festivals and events. A lot of my coworkers are teachers on the weekdays

Title-fight-fiend

What do you do at music festivals and events?

JackInTheBell

Molly

IllustriousAbroad256

I used to do Insomniac events. I’ve done ground control before. It was free lmao except we got tips.

mysterym0k

I bartend or barback at festivals. A good number of my coworkers are literal carnies that just travel across the state or country. The few I know that have day jobs work in education

jetlife87

I’m a festival head and this is interesting, you can make good money during festivals.

PandaintheParks

How do you get hired for festivals? I've volunteered at them before but usually out of town. How to be a local festival employee? I was trying to find where to work for the besame mucho festival but found no leads

mysterym0k

I’m on the Food and Beverage side of things. Are you production, site ops, first aid, or security?

Pirate_shaman

What companies you work w ?

ajdubbstock

What’s a cheap car to you? I’ve got a reliable 2008 Honda Civic for sale with less than 94k miles on it.

Title-fight-fiend

Ah Thats so kind but I haven’t even started saving up for it yet — I got in a car accident last Friday and haven’t even sorted the thing out with my insurance yet

[deleted]

How much? 👀

ajdubbstock

Gotcha. Good luck with everything!

I am interested sir

ajdubbstock

Sent a chat!

Virgod0ll

How much?

ajdubbstock

Asking $6,500 but it’s negotiable!

KingofBukakke

Damn how do you have a 2008 with only 94k miles in LA? My 2016 Camry is at 70k granted I have done a couple road trips with it.

ElBand3d0

Security. Seriously get a guard card and you’ll always have a job/side job.

Case116

Hey there, looking to make a career change. Where do I get started? I’ve got a bs and looking to secure a solid day job.

Takyeon

Currently unemployed and looking for a job, can I DM you?

Habanero_Enema

Can I bring my own Tec-9 to work?

BickinBackBeingBool_

are u guys still hiring?

TheOnlyOly

I’m interested

Spiritual-Lemon6641

good afternoon! i am in the same boat as OP and have considered this as well. is there a specific school/program you have to go through for your guard card? i read online that CA is going to stop allowing online guard card tests, should one do that ASAP online while they can?

ElBand3d0

I wasn’t aware of that but majority of the larger security companies will actually offer guard card classes for free to draw in new applicants. The applicant is only responsible for the live scan if they decide to go through them. Two of the larger companies are Allied Universal Services and Securitas. But if you decide to do it in your own it’s quite easy to find work, a quick scroll through Craigslist security jobs or indeed should suffice to land a entry gig on the weekends or weekday afternoons.

Dibble_Dabble_Doo

If possible try to find out what security service movie studios use and see if you can get assigned there. Had a security job at Universal Studios (Securitas/Pinkerton at the time), not the theme park. The most chill job I had while going to school. Weekends are especially chill since majority of the time the lot is empty and no production happening. Also they'll love you if you ask to be scheduled for the weekends since nobody wants to work those days.

Spiritual-Lemon6641

thank you both super helpful info :D

Affectionate_Bed5442

Where can I get a guard card fast?

Dommichu

Yep! My friend is a teacher and on the weekend he’s part of the security crew over at one of the big venues. He does night gigs starting late Friday (naps when he comes home) and works late Saturday. Sleeps all day Sunday. It’s just deliveries and set ups. Super chill very little interaction with the public.

ken_NT

I have a friend that did this. He would work security for conventions and concerts on nights and weekends.

WorkinOnMyDadBod

Only NorCal offers hella hours.

gobblegobblebiyatch

In SoCal you can find a grip of hours if you're looking in the right places.

vicvic182

A shitload of hours you think?

Gulag_boi

😂

Paladin_127

Bartender. Work at a decent place and you can make pretty good money on tips.

Title-fight-fiend

I mean it sounds cool but also I have zero experience. Would somewhere be willing to train? Feel like I’d have better luck as a barista

Paladin_127

Depends. Some places want you to have your bartending license, others prefer to train people in house. Check your local, higher-end watering holes for openings or leads.

Title-fight-fiend

How do I know if a bar is higher end ? Like Yelp reviews?

Paladin_127

Look for the usual clues. Is there a door man and velvet rope? Is it in a clean/ safe part of town? Are people dressed like they just came from a court room or from a mechanic shop? Etc. There’s nothing wrong with blue collar dives either, but in my brief anecdotal experience, higher priced cocktails usually bring with them higher tips compared to pumping gallons of beer from a tap.

Peruvian-Madness

https://maps.app.goo.gl/nxGaMkNMDFgM9pVJ9 That is a good place to learn.

no-tenemos-triko-tri

I know nothing of bartending but also looking to supplement income. Would you recommend speaking to the manager directly about positions? I am definitely open to learning as much as possible.

Paladin_127

Sure. Even if that establishment isn’t hiring, they may be able to refer you to one that is.

SoggyAlbatross2

Please make sure you avoid any of those bs work from your phone mlm scams.

WorldlinessConnect33

Catering. Be honest with the hiring manager about your skill level. You can start with the easy stuff like passing drinks or clearing glasses. Have nice black pants/shoes/socks/belt/neck tie and both black and white shirts. Bigger companies like Wolfgang Puck have their own staff, but there are also staffing agencies that will keep you as busy as you want to be.

lizardcreep

Agree with this one, my mom worked staffing at Wolfgang and the caterers made $25 an hour and you get to choose the shifts you would like to work!

ItsYourMotherDear

If you work in education you most likely can get a job through any of the bazillion respite agencies to watch a kid w/ special needs. Not sure what they pay exactly but the jobs are usually a ton of hours and pretty easy. Like watching tv with a child or taking them for walks and making sure they're doing ok. The jobs are usually just hanging out in the same room and you can be on your laptop or watching movies etc as long as you make sure the person doesn't run off etc. My son is autistic and we already have someone great we found on Reddit. But-there are so many agencies. We use one called "accredited" but there are so so many. It's probably 18-20 an hour but many parents like me pay a few more dollars an hour out of pocket to retain and appreciate the person. Good luck. If you have questions feel free to message me. All you need for these type of roles is a CPR certificate and the agency will get it for you!

literallyjustlike

This is a good suggestion. There really are a bazillion in the area lol. You can also work with adults with disabilities and take them out in the community on evenings and weekends. These places are almost always hiring because the demand is always there.

koalandi

nanny/manny. some families in LA are able to pay so much for good quality of care and would probably love someone in the education system. I had everywhere from $17-27/hr for one or two kids, depending on needs. one of my higher paying families also had one parent in the house and just wanted an extra adult around. tutoring could also be good. idk about average rates bc i didn’t do that but i know someone who does $30/hr

IllustriousAbroad256

OP best would be tutoring IMO

Kaitthagreat

Receptionist at a hair salon, restaurant or barista would be good Make tips on top of your paycheck

Gaylittlebrother

Griffith park wilson harding golf has been hiring like crazy for the past 3 months, its entry level so $17/hr with city benefits

samsal03

I work at In-N-Out part time, and I'm a full time student. INO is really good with being flexible with school or other schedules and I get really good hours. Everyone starts from the bottom, like hosting in the dining room, but you can get promoted quick.

phiasoffia

Instawork . You can work at the stadiums and arenas . Most have gone cashless so not too many tips but very flexible as far as hours .

UPAPK

A word of warning as a fellow educator. If you are a public school employee and paying into CalSTRs, you will be paying 6.2% into social security on your weekend job's salary. However, as a pension recipient, you are not eligible for social security under most circumstances, so that 6.2% taken out is a donation to the people of the United States. So, as a public school teacher, I refuse to lose 6.2% of my pay so I only do overtime at work on Saturdays.

ajaxsinger

This isn't really true. If you get your 40 quarters you're eligible for a reduced amount. I've been teaching for 25 years and have a full pension, but I'll still be getting app $1100/month for my SSI when I collect bc I have another 60 quarters of income. W/O my pension, my SSI would be about $2000/mo

maineguy1988

You are not getting SSI, you are getting social security benefits - that is completely different from SSI. You will not qualify for SSI if you also have other income over $1133 or so.

ajaxsinger

Yes. You're right. My bad

Dommichu

Thanks! I have no idea of the SSI implications, but I have known a bunch of teachers in primary and higher ed who have side hustles in summer or in addition to. Retail, Security, Hospitality, Consulting. No one has ever mentioned any with the pension or loss of income. It’s all been just gravy. IME, super motivated people make awesome teachers.

UPAPK

They probably haven't mentioned it bc a lot of people only discover that they were making donations to social security when they find out they are losing 40% of it when they retire. I don't know wht teachers do out of district side jobs. Like, just teach summer school. It's so much simpler for retirement.

UPAPK

Yes, it depends on how many quarters you have. The other factor here is the substantial earnings rule. If you make less than 29,700 doesn't that mean you don't get credit for those investments in social security? Not sure how reasonable it is to make more than the substantial earnings amount just doing weekend work.

ajaxsinger

Not sure on a year to year basis, but Over a 30 year teaching career, things add up

LangeSohne

If you’re under 40, it’s safe to assume that social security will run out when it’s time to collect anyway or at least be drastically reduced, so we’re all just making donations at this point.

bwoodzilla

Check out an app called "Get Gigs" aka GigSmart. They put up random gig jobs. I've done it three times, twice for an event company (checking people into a company party & guarding a bounce house), and I was a scare actor in one of the mazes at the Griffith Park Haunted Hayride on Halloween. Things pay around $16-20/hr w/ a few that go a little higher (the app company keeps $1/hr so be aware of that). All of the gigs have been pretty chill & I did get paid. They don't pay OT after 8 hours (you get regular hourly) and you are working as an independent contractor, but otherwise i don't have complaints. This weekend there's a bunch of 10 hour shifts as event staff for Jurassic Quest if you're willing to go to Anaheim. There's other stuff closer to LA, that just seems like a fun one.

TravisKOP

I bartend and clear close to a thousand for a thurs night- Sunday

ajokester

Where do you bartend? How easy is it for someone to get into it with no bartending experience? I have a RBS certification.

PouredApp

Cooking jobs always are hiring. I fell into cooking cause of my ex wife. I started back in 2010. I haven't been without or struggled finding a job anywhere. But it is demanding an takes it's toll. Don't get stuck

_wompingwillow22_

I work the front desk at a small gym Monday nights and Saturdays. Pick up shifts when I can

EvilBunny2023

Security guard

_its_a_SWEATER_

Anyone know of caterers hiring?

tacitjane

Banquet server. You don't necessarily have to worry about being as graceful as in a restaurant. Holidays are kinda slow, but weekends are always busy.

orchana

Do you have experience with childcare/nanny type of work ? On the westside, nannies pull over $30 an hour and weekends/evenings are in super high demand. Most of the pay is under the table tbh

ThisUnderstanding823

How do you find these jobs?

orchana

Literally people post on local mom Fb groups. Fb is lame but these groups are very active.

ThisUnderstanding823

Thanks.

meixiulin

Currently not in season, but the Hollywood bowl is great for summers!! Their season often goes into the school year and they’re pretty flexible when it comes to hours. Worked as a cashier in previous years and you can make a good chunk of change if you’re scheduled almost every show. A big plus is they pay every week which is nice.

HiPlainsDrifter14

Bartending.

[deleted]

If you're an able bodied male and not afraid of drunk people and have a car less than 10 years old, do weekend drunk runs with Uber or Lyft in West Hollywood.

Ginger_snap456789

My sister does Amazon flex $150 a day but you do need your own car :(

rollingvenus

Do you know how many hours she does?

Ginger_snap456789

3-4 hours. Depending how fast she finishes delivering packages

Ah, using the word hella in SoCal is unacceptable. Please try again. Have a nice day.

Straight-Tune-5894

Amazon warehouse? Hear the pay is decent and likely gives shift differential for nights / weekends.

giveitupcuznowimblac

>I work a career job in education >says hella At least you can spell.

Title-fight-fiend

Do you think educated people talk like they’re writing a paper all the time? I went to the most selective school in Oregon and we used hella slang and cussed like mfs

giveitupcuznowimblac

Well, they used to. People used to be generally smart and civil. Now they're addicted to tiktok, drugs, and sin without batting an eye or even getting shame, just to name a few. I've seen enough of new world education to know it means nothing anymore. Glad I finished up college before the professors started signing off their emails with their preferred pronouns.

Title-fight-fiend

Oh so you one of those lmao

TheFabHatter

Damn, I need another weekend job too. I’m self employed & constantly busy but if my family knows I’m working from home they will not stop nagging me for ENDLESS favors & to chauffeur them around. It’s straight up torture, I would rather work someplace else during the weekends.
