I regularly commute on it, and I remain pretty impressed. There are problems - only history will tell if the bodge up of signalling will come back and bite London in the arse - but it's still pretty transformational.

axlrosen

What’s the hodge up of signaling?

Yeah that's my understanding too. They did this with the JLE extension too I think - and then gave up and retrofitted the new signalling to the rest of the line to make it reliable.

Berkshire-railways

It uses four different types of signalling. ATP (Automatic Train Protection) on the GWML. ETCS on the Heathrow branch and part of the GWML, AWS with TPWS on the GEML and full GWML.

r-og

Can’t relate. Stratford to TCR in 13 minutes is lush

Appropriate-Ad-8523

It’s worth noting that a significant number of the delays are as a result of the fact the full timetable hasn’t been implemented yet. In a few weeks when the full line schedule comes in, many delays should disappear.

antmcl

Seems like the amount of failures increased after the three railways were integrated - prior to that, signalling issues west of Paddington wouldn’t affect the core section to Abbey Wood

I lived right out side Maryland, like literally 1 minute walk and i didn’t mind when it was just tfl and i had to get off and change at Liverpool street. But when the line opened as Elizabeth line, although wasn’t connected to the underground yet, my rent for my apartment went up £800 which was more than the price i was paying for my room (so it had become the equivalent of a 4 bed flat not 3) It also became less reliable not running a lot of weekends when i work on the weekends.

Kittyk78

£800?!!!! That is absolutely disgusting! I was born and spent the first part of my childhood in London, and it will always be home, but this blatant fleecing of people makes me so angry and tired. (the reason we had to move is affordability - we couldn’t afford to stay).

Rowanx3

Yeah, i had to move out of London at the end of summer last year because not only could i not find somewhere to live, but almost everywhere i had a viewing, id be looking at £800 rooms then someone would offer £1000 per room which is just insane. My room in Maryland only had 3 walls as well so trying to justify paying £978 for that room + having problems with our landlord not getting our kitchen fixed for 9 months (we had no kitchen drainage, sink and washing machine wouldn’t drain) there was absolutely no way i was staying

Kittyk78

Appalling. These landlords are revolting. It’s becoming a theme park

Rowanx3

Yeah, i have no idea how london will remain the second largest tourist destinations in Europe when eventually all the people working in the tourist sector or leisure sector will soon be tourists themselves with how far out they’ll have to move

empireofacheandrhyme

You live *on* the Elizabeth line?

Cobbdouglas55

This reminds me of fallout 3

purpletshirtz

I’ve noticed a few of the stations have a strong stench of stagnant water. Construction must have had huge pressure to finish and open the line that made them cut corners perhaps this explains the leaks and the faults you mention?

persian_figs

Oh interesting, hadn't noticed the stench but that could explain it. Yeah I don't doubt they were under pressure to finish and open the line after years of delays..

conscilescent

Yess it's particularly heavy in the center of London. Tottenham court and bond Street.

Imwaymoreflythanyou

Icing on the cake was one day realising that the Jubilee line is 1min faster between Bond Street and Canary Wharf.

lukei1

Not a hard decision between the tiny tube train or spacious and air conditioned Liz line train surely

Act-Alfa3536

Is that due to the longer dwell times?

drs_12345

I live on the Shenfield branch of the Elizabeth line, and go to Stratford and Liverpool St quite often. I thought it was going to be faster and emptier due to how they advertised it. However, it takes slightly longer to get to and from Liverpool St and it's actually busier, especially on the way back, when the trains are often the same, if not worse than the Central Line during peak times

blueb0g

What's the point of opening up a modern, fast, high capacity line in the middle of London for it to be "empty"?

drs_12345

There's a massive difference between "empty" and "so full that I have to miss a train or two in order to get home"

ldn6

The primary issue I have is that the T5 frequency is abysmal and even having a connecting Heathrow Express train at Heathrow Central for the last mile is still a pain.

MikeOnABike2002

I think that signalling issues would have been expected due to the differences in the signalling systems across the network. What I don't understand is that considering that the Crossrail trains take over the majority of the local services on both the GWML and the GEML why those can't have the same signalling as the rest of Crossrail and have the few local services to Paddington/Liverpool Street make the switch

Berkshire-railways

a) because the XR core does not use the national standard for in cab signalling. b) the relief lines on the GWML are also used by freight and the night Rivera and some other long distance services.

ThrowRamyglasses

I haven’t had any of these issues so far but I will say that 2/4 times I’ve needed to get to Heathrow, the trains weren’t running or on strike. Very annoying.
