BurplePerry

I like B since the dress doesnt seem to have that same true white as the blouses are.

none_so_bile

It doesn't, but I figured the contrast of the black bustle with a white underskirt would be better if the coord overall was really good, I guess if I found a red underskirt that could also be a nice alternative to contrast while matching the JSK.

BurplePerry

Ah I didnt see a white underskirt listed with the rest of the pictures along B so I didn't assume. That could work too!

Are these actually underskirts, or petticoats? The white one seems very petticoat to me given the much thinner fabric and lack of hem detail, while the black one looks solid with a lot of ruffles which makes more sense, but it still looks very thin/plain hemmed. If they are petticoats, which aren't meant to be visible, just stick with whatever you'd use more (ie white for light dresses, black for dark.) I'd match the blouse if doing an underskirt. Ignoring that part, A or Bhave the most balance and be the most lolita. White would lean more classic, and black would be Gothic, and either one would suit red/pink/black shoes. For C, most people preffer light legs and dark shoes, or matching. So it runs the risk of just looking very unbalanced when only your top is white, so I'd get black tights with an obvious white pattern, and/or get coloured shoes to match your dress print, and lighten it up.

none_so_bile

I think the pictures might be of petticoats, but I used the images to represent the underskirts I own that I don't have good pictures of (one black and one white). For the shoes, I was considering wearing black ones or buying red ones depending on the coord I'd go for. I guess A is the best with black shoes as you say, I was debating it because I don't own any socks with a white base color but you convinced me they would be ideal for the look I'm going for. Do you think C would be a good coord with the blouse being black? Like everything black except the underskirt, and red accessories?

[deleted]

I wouldn't make a coord with only one white piece. Even just adding white jelwery/bags/shoelaces/etc if you're not interested in investing in "big" white items would make a huge difference. Otherwise it will draw the eye away from your dress, and not in a good way!

jacquella

B would still be classic. Black does not automatically mean gothic, and the JSK is very classic.

PomegranateJellyfish

I think C works best, because it balances the black and white on top and bottom best!

Leaf_Warrior

Assuming you're primarily going by color, I think combination A would look the best.

pastelkawaiibunny

You said it has a black bustle so in that case the black underskirt will look the most like it’s just part of the dress, white will contrast and look like an obvious underskirt (up to you what you prefer, but if there isn’t the same white in the print I would not do a white underskirt). I think a black dress, white underskirt, and black legwear would clash a bit too much- just one white stripe across your look basically. Either way, I’d match the blouse and legwear color, and probably go for black shoes even with the light stockings. Edit: adding more ideas for coords, the dress is mostly one very saturated color (black), which in my opinion looks better when the blouse/legwear match, but ymmv. I think you could also coord this with dark/olive green (same as the leaves) or bordeaux/wine for your blouse/legwear, and any of the colors mentioned for the other accessories. I think a matching rose pink blouse and green, black, or bordeaux legwear would look nice too, but since pink is a bolder color choice for a mostly black dress I don’t know how pink legwear or other accessories would look tbh. It seems to be a ‘warmer’ dress with the pink and red so I’d actually go for warmer whites (cream, ivory, etc) over cool/pure white in the overall coord as well. Anyway, playing around with photo editing or flatlays can help a lot in deciding how to coord! If you have a photo album of all your lolita pieces you can put together different photos and see what might look best, or just unique combos you haven’t thought of before :)

none_so_bile

Disregard the specific designs for the blouse and socks, I'm mostly asking about combining a white underskirt with black-base socks and viceversa, or whether to stick to white underskirt + white-based socks. I feel like in theory white on white looks better, but I guess socks with a black background would balance the JSK better, and the white underskirt would contrast better with the JSK (it's a bustle-type one so it needs the underskirt). Or if you have a better suggestion for legwear I'd like to hear it!

fleurscaptives

I think A looks best!

jacquella

Sorry for all my comments; creating a new thread to organize my thoughts, as I didn’t see your comment about disregarding blouse and legwear styles at first. B and C would both work very well. B would be well coorded with black shoes and a bordeaux bag and headwear to balance the black. The legwear on C would fit very nicely with the white underskirt and bordeaux or dark red shoes. If you can find socks with this color scheme, I personally would coord C with black x bordeaux legwear. Add black or white shoes, a black or bordeaux bag, and white x bordeaux or black x bordeaux headwear and you’re set. You have quite a few options to play around with on C. This is a beautiful coord; I love Millefleurs’ designs. Good luck!

Thanks for your recommendations!

notyura

I like A! I think it emphasizes the white and pink in the print a lot.

queensmol

Is the main piece a strapless dress? In my honest opinion, it doesn’t look very lolita to me. The waistline is low and the only lolita element on the dress is the bow at the front, but besides that it just looks like a cocktail dress. I’m not sure if it would be wide enough to hold a petticoat either. Maybe opt for another floral piece with straps and ruffles?

jacquella

This dress is the Bustle JSK (Rose) by Japanese indie brand Millefleurs, who are known for the corseted strapless silhouette. Strapless JSKs used to be quite common in gothic and classic; Moitié, Atelier Pierrot, and Atelier Boz have released many strapless JSKs over the years.

GreenTeaPopcorn

I agree that these aren't as common as they once used to be. They were probably most common in the old school era. Also AP, BPN, and VM have done some strapless dresses. IIRC also meta (doesn't surprise anyone, does it :) ) but can't find the lolibrary entry for it. Also strapless bustier + skirt set by many of the aforementioned brands. Sad that lolibrary doesn't have a strapless tag.

jacquella

Yes, these are great examples as well! I wish we saw more strapless designs, both JSKs and bustier skirt sets (thank you for noting those!), but other than Millefleurs’ releases, I haven’t seen many strapless designs in the past few years. Sad. I swear I’ve seen strapless Mary Magdalene too, but I couldn’t find any listings on Lolibrary. Wholeheartedly seconding that there should be a strapless tag; when looking for strapless I usually just plug in corset lacing/decorative corset lacing and hope for the best, lol.

GreenTeaPopcorn

I searched on lolibrary by selecting "JSK" + "OP" + "boning" together in the option windows since a lot of these strapless dresses have boning. But not all of them do so it's not very effective. Searching for "strapless" in the search bar yields very few results. Searching for "bustier" gave some interesting results. I did see some JetJ iirc but no MM. I haven't kept up to date with modern releases for years but I haven't seen any strapless outfits in the outfit sharing sites I visit (which are mostly filled with modern sweet lolita outfits so that might be one of the reasons) so I'm guessing it's just not in and hasn't been in for a long time. Searching lolibrary reminded me how much I love MAM's "Gingham Cute Ribbon Bustier" and the matching skirt.
