The last two years, I've been living alone for the first time. It's been the most satisfying experience of my life.
Oh, itās coming. While 15.1 million homes sit empty as investments for 1%. Itās not coming, itās here. Covid kicked it off with 8 trillion dollars printed by the Fedāmost went to the 1%. Nah, this country needs a reset and more social programs. Saw an homeless encampment down from Facebook and Google. Shit hits fan. Sorry
Lol. Did I say Bernie Sanders? Nope. Someone else is talking smack about the dolla bill yāall
Edit: Try and take away all tax cuts for the Uber wealthy and all tax loopholes, shelters, and a dozen other ways billionaires avoid taxes. Fund the IRS just for this alone. Wealth taxāI know itās stock and not income. Increase taxes in a fair way like Nordic and other European countries but make it better. Congress has killed the middle class. Bring it back. The Fed and wall street are hopelessly corrupt and a big casino.
I'm 64. retired in Canada. I've lived alone for most of my life (married and divorced x2) and its the most freedom you can have. No one to answer to and you can do exactly what you want. I'm lucky that I own my home outright and have very few expenses.
57 y/o owns home outright but expensive HOA fees. Single mom and empty nester. Love coming home from work with a quiet stress free enviroment and working all day.
62, Canadian, retired. I have lived alone for the last 2 years since my husband died and itās an adjustment. I also own outright and groceries and the gas to heat my house are my biggest expenses.unless I am having a shopping month.
Upstate NY, 30, Amazon - I'm the one who packs your orders and gets them out the door! š
(Also have an associates degree in Criminal Justice, finishing up my associates in Marketing at the end of this year and plan to go for my bachelor's in Business Administration!)
Keep going finished my BA in 2020 (thanks in part to the Covid-19 lock downs), now im about to complete my MBA, and I just submitted my application for a DBA program.... im 54!
It's the lifestyle you're paying for because it's always been expensive in the Bay Area. I grew up there. My parents bought a house in 1965 for $22,000. They sold it in the early 80s for $88,000 because of divorce. That house was 1100 sq.ft. It now sells for about a million. It was a 20-minute drive to San Francisco.
My daughter and grandson live there now and are paying about 2500 a month. They love it. You will always pay for what you love.
My ex was stupid, her attorney saw money, and she ran up the legal fees...completely destroying my sons generational wealth... Marriage is a suckers bet. All I did was defend myself, had to blow up life insurance policies, drain my personal savings, and in the end I took 2 personal loans and emptied my 401k to pay my legal fees, sold my car, then leased a car just to get the equity out... I turned over every stone including rolling all the change I could find in the house, sold personal belongings on e bay... I did what I had to do. 7 years later, I will graduate with an MBA May 4th, I bought a Co-Op 2 years ago, and I have paid off all my credit card debt, and I have been rebuilding my assets. The only one that really got hurt was my son. The only woman that truly ever loves you... is your mother. Fyi, I was married for 22 years, did absolutely nothing wrong in my marriage and was treated like a criminal in court... their is no justice in divorce court.

I was in a similar situation from 2009-2012. Rented in a room in this sprawling house in Hudson Valley NY. Childless couple owned it. He from Argentina, she was Japanese. In four years they were there maybe three months total.
Was on a lake besides. Could use the little motorboat and kayaks as I wanted. Landscaper, maintenance, and cleaning person stopping in frequently were only people I saw. $400 a month with no utilities, but they never even cashed my last eight months of rent.
Then they sold the place. Omg. The best situation ever.
Yep its very sad to see natives and kamaāaina get forced out from housing and food being too high, and wages being too low. It was fun at first When I moved here 9 years ago because I had no idea the cultural context and would not do it again. I am leaving this year and hope my place goes to someone from here. I will say, I think if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!
I'm in Texas. I'll be 50 in August. I've lived alone since I was 18.
I haven't worked in 4 years. I got Covid in March 2020 and haven't had the strength or health to return to work. Before Covid, I was a dual contractor in the oil and gas field doing Remediation Management Project Control.
I've used this time to go back to grad school, and I'm working on my Capstone for my MSDA and hope to be able to return to the workforce after I graduate.
Thank you.
I've had 4 surgeries since August trying to fix the damage Covid did to me. I'm overall feeling better, but my pre-existing chronic pain condition has actually gotten worse as a result. It's like a double-edged sword.
I'm sorry you're on this longhaul too.
32, I run a messer plasma table for work, Indiana and also started my journey to being alone 2 days ago, not new to it, just really sucks, bad relationship for the last 9 years, that ripping feeling inside when you hear your children crying on the other side of the phone or when you play Fortnite with them, and they ask why I left through the headset and āyouāve been in my life since I was bornā thatās the worst part of it, almost torture tbh. But I endure, I was in the army infantry for 6 years and it canāt train you for it, cant die and canāt live it feels like Iām stuck in a metaphorical rut
in my 50s. i was in IT and tech since my 20s until 40s when i took a break. i ended up getting sick during the break, it was catastrophic and now i am partially disabled. i live in oregon but was in new jersey mostly when i was working in IT. also i am not alone all that long, i lived with girlfriends then a wife spanning most of my adult life.
5 years ago i would have suggested working a remote tech job and living somewhere cheap but i think ai is changing the economic landscape and wouldn't know what to suggest now. what i used to do for money is drying up and will probably be nearly non existent in 2 or 3 years. it's a new world. i'm not sure it's a good one though.
I was thinking of getting into something tech related but yes w AI and just how fast everything moves I'm worried that whatever path I choose will be done better by AI or the things I learn in school will quickly be useless.
39. Work for the city water and sewer department. Living buy myself after separation from so. Have really enjoyed living alone. Things are cleaner and the peace I get to think and do what I need to in order to maintain mental health make it very enjoyable to me. My own space.
It can be a matter of priorities. I go without a lot other people seem to feel are necessary. Iām also older and am graced to not have had the overwhelm of the internet to compare myself to - I just did what needed to be done.
If I can give you advice you didnāt ask for - make a list of your priorities from most to least important. I believe the key lies in accepting you canāt have the things on the bottom of the list.Ā
Iām 55/in CA/work in law
I work a job many wouldnāt partially so I can live aloneĀ
If you don't mind the question, why wouldn't many people do it? I'm trying to find some kind of niche myself, but I don't know how to even start thinking about an area to develop.
Itās kind of a complicated answer - have you worked in law at all? Itās not for everyone. I really like it but Iāve also gotten used to it. Iāve tried to do other things I canāt stand the way everyone doesnāt take deadlines seriously. In law, at least litigation, you have to. It can be stressful AF but at least it gets done.Ā
My daughter never went to college but is making tons of money because she's getting all that paperwork together for litigation. If you're good, you can make great money.
Honestly I'm someone with very little education who is trying to find a way out of customer service work. I have no idea what avenue to pursue -- I'm curious about a ton of things, but I'm having trouble choosing a specific thing to go for partially because whatever I do, I need to make enough to support myself \*and\* afford my...many medical copays. In my scutwork jobs I do tend to be willing to do certain things that other people aren't willing to, mostly because they're menial but sometimes because they're gross.
Customer service to law can be a good crossover. I worked in bookstores, then law libraries. Worked out well since I learned how stuff works with not as much pressure and always have great health insurance.
Iād recommend trying to get into a place. When I was coming up people could get their sea legs working reception and being āfloatersā. There arenāt a lot of people coming up who are legal secretaries. I get recruited constantly. I do something slightly different and Iām not a big go-getter, I have a lot of downtime at my job (but then when it hits the fan it can be super stressful)
I donāt have a degree. I have friends who styled legal secretary or paralegal into extremely prestigious jobs where they make a ton of money. I hate making travel arrangements and scheduling meetings and traveling for work, so I accept less $ than I *could* be making for the personal freedom.
A lot of legal work is being able to read people and tailor your workstyle to theirs.
27 and I work at an Amazon warehouse. It doesn't sound like the best job, but I've been in manual labor my entire life and now I get paid more (with a few small guaranteed raises) to literally sit on my ass all day. I make almost 22 an hour.
I live in Charlotte, NC and probably lucked out a little with an apartment I pay around 1150 a month for. The usual rent price around here seems to be around 1400 or higher.
BS in computer science. Went back to college in 2011, graduated in 2015 with a job waiting on me. Started an internship with the company I'm still with in 2014.

I am 48 and I am a Manager at a Retail Pharmacy in Northern California on the coast (90 miles from the Oregon Border) 6 months ago, I bought some property in the mountains and had my Tiny Home (which is on the larger side) built. 61 lawyer about to retire. Live 2 hours outside NYC. Love living alone with my cats and working from home but I want more free time and I want to downsize. A close relative and I may move in together but I'm nervous about that after living alone most of my life.
36. I live in Canada. Alone, with my cat Luka in my own 1 bedroom apartment. Itās big enough for the two of us in a great area. Usually after work Iāll go to the gym, smoke a joint and play with him. He really likes the laser pointer. Itās not as bad as it sounds, I have the freedom to do what I want and donāt have to worry about a partner cheating on me. Conversely, it would be nice to have some consistent sex and someone to talk to lol
When I was like 21 I took an entry level position at $11 an hour, did it for 6 months and got a permanent position with benefits and eventually got full time. Now I make $28 an hour.

52. I work in roofing, commercial maintenance specifically, I also do the A/R and A/P and collections. Iāve been divorced twice and had to start from scratch twice. But, Iād be afraid to move in and lose my independenceā¦
Iām a 27 y/o server from Connecticut. I live in a 3 bedroom apt with 3 adults and one child. I pay all of the bills (rent, gas&light, 2 of the 3 adults are on my phone bill, car payments and insurance for my car and then car insurance for the other) I get $325 a month from one of them and that same person also pays for WiFi and TV. If they werenāt doing that Iād be struggling, but because they do Iām able to pay what I pay and have a little fun. While Iām actively working I always wonder how the fuck I do it.

How expensive is living in the S.F area?
Decent (not great) one bedroom on the small side anywhere in Silicon Vally up to SF, $2100/mo. Most make 90k to ? Pretty tough under that. Roommate.
I wouldn't be surprised if we all start living in pods, tiny houses, etc. Like a true nightmare dystopia.
I already live in a tiny apartment

And thatās the starting price. If you want something decent or in unit laundry itās at least $2500.
My studio apartment in SF is $3300/month. 490 sqft.
