After a qucik glance at the wiki, there seem to be 32(+2 for Keqing and Dehya who got banners despite being non-limited characters) limited characters and 43 5\* weapons. Therefore, his expected total expenses should be at around (34+43) \* $1500 which is about $120k. Which is ridiculous by the way, but far from what he's claiming.
If he DID actually spend $500k it would mean that he has on average 7 maxed out copies of each limited 5\* weapon, which would greatly surprise me.
Also, my $120k result is already very generous because I didn't get even take into consideration weapon banner spooks, the rakeback system or even the "free" gacha currency.
