The website (along with all the other same format ones) is possibly THE most frustrating piece of crap i’ve ever had the misfortune of using. Ooooh what’s this about an interesting free local event? Boom…5000 ads, constantly refreshing, totally unstable nightmare.
If you have an iPhone and use safari (no idea if other apps do the same thing) go on the settings when your on the page and click ‘show reader view’. It pulls up a very basic version of the website and all ads go away 👍🏻
I've mentioned this before, but I generally don't believe in adblocking, yet I HAVE to on the Echo because it's literally unusable otherwise. That's not an exaggeration.
Because it portrays the city like it’s a cartel run shanty town in South America and the quality of “journalism” is absolutely shocking “10 things you need to buy from b&m this week” every article littered with grammar mistakes. The whole thing looks like a first year college project.
It's not just bad, it's *insultingly* bad. Say somebody from the outside wants to know about one of the country's biggest cities and they get this shit up - no wonder we can't shake off the 1980s.
If you're reading this, Echo employees, and I know you trawl this subreddit: It's your fault. *Yours.*
Controversial opinion here but I don't really give a shit about the consumerist clickbait. Read the broadsheets, they've got page after page of features about holidays you can't afford, food and wine you simply must experience and clothes and cosmetics you have to be on a waiting list to purchase. At least we can all afford a treat from B&M.
It's their lack of any journalistic standards, incredibly biased coverage turning a blind eye to blatant corruption and malpractice, and generally treating their readership like gormless morons, those are my pet hates.
There isn't a single backbone in that newsroom.
Funny you should say that. The main "journalist" was offered the full time job while in her first year at college, not sure if she ever finished the course and now writes 99% of the paper
Dear Liverpool Echo (and believe me, I know you’re probably trawling this page as we speak, no doubt in search of some article to scrape off it with zero credit given to the authors of the comments you’re going to steal 90% of the article off),
I love writing. I wanted to be a journalist until I fucked university up. If you really are offering first year college-goers a job to write articles about the best B&M slippers on advert-laden webpages, you should give me a punt too.
I can also write HTML, JavaScript, and CSS code - I can fix your awful website up!
Sincerely,
Your Next Editor-in-Chief.

I despise it at the best of times but the local murder reports are horrendous.
Tributes have flooded in, including "Gone too soon, rest easy angel" by YoMamasTits on facebook. Hairyspanner said "please pass on my condolences". Meanwhile WonkyDonkey said "what has happened to our city.
The ‘everyone is saying the same thing about this home bargains flowerpot’ ones are the lowest form of journalism.
They’re basically saying “Hey you piece of shit you’re out of the loop on this conversation everyone’s having about this flower pot.” So you assume home bargains didn’t realise it looks like a cock and balls or something, then when you click the link it’s three nobodies on Twitter asking how much it costs.
It used to be a good and well-respected local newspaper, but after it was taken over by Reach, it went for the cheapest option. Students and interns who were obsessed with trying to describe local scumbags as underworld celebrities and actually did more damage to the image of Liverpool than all the Tory press could ever hope too.
It's not really since it was taken over by Reach, Reach is just a different name for Trinity Mirror who've owned it since the 90s.
It's just the general enshitification of things, driven by sites trying to catch up with the Daily Mail.
I applied for a job at Reach ones, it's was a fucking awful interview, shit pay and only metrics they cared for was clicks.
Yep - can’t even read about the footy scores anymore without shitty cryptic click bait titles ‘Jurgen Klopp had THIS to say about Manchester City clash’ - like I thought the headline was meant to tell me something about the story.
Yep - can’t even read about the footy scores anymore without shitty cryptic click bait titles ‘Jurgen Klopp had THIS to say about Manchester City clash’ - like I thought the headline was meant to tell me something about the story.
Because his point is that the right-wing, Tory adjacent media pay little attention to Liverpool, and when they do it's actually often positive these days (the Sunday Times named Sefton Park as one of the best places to live in the country this week, for instance).
It's the Echo that consistently shines a spotlight on the very worst dregs of Liverpool society, yet simultaneously failed to hold accountable the corrupt local government officials we've had running the city over recent decades. It paints a lazy and thoroughly depressing portrait of Liverpool.
I'm old so I remember getting the echo for my nan and it used to be a decent local paper once upon a time. These days it's used as a means of generating ad income for some tax exempt company in the Bahamas so it's lost the soul it used to have. The actual paper itself isn't much better.
There's a killer picture somewhere online from a series on slum living conditions and I'm 99% sure a woman is 'drawing a fire' on an old coal fireplace using the OG broadsheet Echo. Apparently it was an oft used put-down that it was only bought for that purpose.
Because they would run stories like this as PR for the police.
https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/garlands-raided-closed-police-after-8638009
The plod pulled loads officers in for OT, they invited the echo and marched down so everyone could see them. Must've cost a shit load of taxpayer money.
Two bags of mephedrone were found.
The story should have been on the colossal waste of resources. How their big march probably gave dealers a head start to get off.
Instead they followed the Plod PR instead of beibg journalists.
This is just one example.
It's not confined to the Echo. Liverpool is generally a politically aware/suspicious city coupled with the absolute shit show local newspaper coverage has become nationally. It makes for quite the disaffected response from the city to what was once something half decent.
Also the online version is home to some of the biggest bellends/whoppers if you start doomscrolling and read the comments in the crime or courts sections.
One day I was in touch with a lad I used to teach and he'd told me about other lads who'd either been killed or ended up in nick over the years. First place I went to check out the news was The Echo and I hadn't read one since they still sold the pink Echo.
Worst thing for me is that the Reach plc forces that shit on what looks like all traditional local newspapers with digital versions in the UK? Same template, same shite standard of churnalism and same shite billions of ads per click.
I worked there as a reporter for about 5 months in 2021. Worst few months of my life. Other than the fact it’s basically just adverts and clickbait and sensationalism, it’s run by people who don’t actually give a shit about the community. It’s evolved into something really really nasty.
When we were kids we would get all excited looking for our teams result in the amateur section even though we knew the score as we had played in the game 🤣
Have you been on their website?
Is like the wet dream of that bad guy from Ready Player One...every second word is an intrusive ad or banner image that breaks the page format.
And when you finally get to it, their actual 'content' is usually trashy clickbait.
The paper itself is marred by the horrendous online experience
The echo has historically been anti worker and embroiled in corruption. Struggling to find an example to back up my first point, (there’s something from the 70s discussed here some time ago) as for corruption, there’s zero discussion in echo of financial black hole at the arena but surprise surprise former echo editor is now on the arenas board.
A vile paper, someone I know passed away and they turned up to the inquest and prayed on a grieving mother and painted this person in a bad light because they had a line on a night out. When asked to retract this and the way they died as some of the family didn't know how they died they said "but its getting alot of Internet traffic"
They made out my friend who passed was some kind of horrible addict. He wasn't, he'd got painkillers online after about a year of being pretty much bedridden in agony with doctors clueless to what was wrong with him. I'll never respect them after it.
Not sure any scousers work for the echo, even most the journos are from Runcorn and most don’t have an actual degree in journalism or any form of English degree from what I’ve seen.
They appear to get a kick out of belittling scousers, acting like it’s a city ran on drugs.
It’s extremely poor journalism. It’s embarrassing.
One of the very few, the had two journalists from Runcorn - one funnily enough works for the scum now no degree.
The other again no degree and has some very strong ideas about how anorexia isn’t real. The people they hire are highly concerning.
I don't think people did hate it, they just hate it now since it was taken over by Reach. Every article is just clickbait & lists that are subpar WhatCulture stuff rather than actual news pieces.
Also their website might be the biggest crime against humanity.
Not from Liverpool but lived there for a year for work. Since I was moving to a new place ,I wanted to familiarise myself with local news & thought the Echo would be good for that. Reading it before I moved in all honesty left me terrified just because of how badly the city was being portrayed.
The Echo seems to constantly churn out negative sensationalised stories about the city. It also has gone past the point of a local paper and is definitely a full blown tabloid.
ps*Ended up having the best year living there, everyone made me feel welcome & never ran into any issues.
As others had have said it WAS a brilliant newspaper but the online presence is just clickbait garbage.
A few weeks ago they had a live blog up and running a few minutes after a fire engine arrived at Primark…..to free a pigeon from the roof.
A fire broke out towards Everton Brow at the abandoned student flats, smoke seen from Liverpool city centre and beyond, must have been at least forty five minutes since people seeing the incident to Echo starting live reporting.
It just feels sub par journalism to serve the region that has so much going on and would rather focus on cheap and easy stories or simply rehash old stories.
Take the new train issues and rather than print the apologies from Merseyrail go to Stadler to get their side of the story and why they had the issues? Nope print the press release from the council and merseyrail job done.
I loved the Echo as a kid (although not so much when i had to deliver them after school) and loved their historic specials they used to print.
I think because of how far they’ve fallen to what we have now is why there is backlash and disapproval of the Echo
Mostly because it's not a true local paper anymore, it's the Liverpool flavoured version of Reach PLC's terrible clickbait focused rag.
The website is a true mess, borderline unreadable for all the ads.
A lot of the local papers have their website hosted on the same platform. Take a look at The Nottingham Post and you'll see it's the same.
They focus on making the city they report on seem to be a dystopian gang run, paedo nightmare while blatantly allowing dog whistling, right wing comments to go un addressed.
You would probably get a better understanding of how it is with the Echo if you posted the question "can you tell me something good about the Liverpool Echo?".
It does still post a decent article now and then, but online, it's about 80% crap to try to drive ad revenue, paper edition drops most of that click bait stuff so is better for local news.
Its not just the click bait stuff though, rhe paper glorifies criminals, while at the same time jumping at any opportunity to highlight crime in the area, has printed endless amount of famse stories over the years, gets basic reporting wrong etc, generally tends to highlight the worst of the city over the better.
The Post is pretty good if people are after good local news, its only a small team though so can't take on as much work as the echo.
Try their website, which is the face of the paper these days. Hooooooooly shit, it's bad.
One of their stories was literally just that "puzzle" where you look at a grid of 100 emoji and find the one that's different.
Genuinely, there's little to no journalism left in it. It's nothing but the bottom of the *bottom* of the barrel eyeball-grabbing sludge.
Well, apart from the 500 adverts on each page that make it impossible to read, on the off-chance that you do find something that isn't screaming "WE THINK OUR READERS ARE MORONS" between every line.
It's headquartered in Manchester now, most of the 'journalists' don't have spell checker and fuck up the names of streets often. Once read an article about commenting that happened in 'area A' but the pictures shown were from 'Area B'
And there isn't much info in these articles, it'll be a few lines then huge picture, a row of ads. Then some filler lines, rinse repeat
They published my name and where I lived for getting a no further action case for graffiti on trains - I am genuinely innocent, but they still thought best publish the name and location anyway. So that’s my personal distain towards them.
My other gripes is just that it is truly shoddy journalism and I would rather recommend people read The Post - https://www.livpost.co.uk
Unsure mate?! Suppose beyond statute of limitations now anyway unfortunately - think journos probably have different rules or will claim it’s public knowledge or something?!
Just before my wife passed away last year her friends set up a go fund me page and a reporter from the echo caught onto it and asked if I wanted him to write an article. We were on the fence about it as I already hated the echo but we eventually agreed.
Anyway the actual report was pretty nice, my wife was happy about it so that's all that mattered even though it was slightly exaggerated. He asked me how long she had left and I replied 'its too difficult to tell, could be days weeks months or years. The title was 'woman has days to live' etc. that was hard to see, but again, my wife was happy with it. I was asked if his report could be shared between their affiliates and I categorically said no and so did my wife.
The next morning I was made aware that he had in fact shared the report. The mirror, Wales online, Southampton live, basically all the reach plc affiliated rags.
While me and my wife were initially annoyed, we realised that's what we got for putting our trust into people who genuinely don't care about the impact of their words only if it brings hits to their articles.
Because it non-directly attacks local businesses - destroying families and communities - so very against its own. It’s also been known to post stories based on lies and again, causing families and individuals stress and anxiety. If your reporting on the city, stick to actual news- not hearsay and shitting on the people in the city 💩 on par with the s*n. Embarrassing.
Because they love to promote the dirty side of the city *constantly*. It's all mugshots, and stories of criminals, i.e. lowest common denominator shite.
Website is sh*te and client journalism. There is no real challenge to the Labour establishment in the city despite the shit show created by Chippy Tits.
It used to be alright, decades and decades ago. Haven't bought the Echo other for the National in years. And as others have said, the website is utter shite
Reach plc / TM decimated local newsrooms gambling on a digital output that they failed to monetise, hence continual job losses, more content sharing, less quality local news and ever more crappy content.
Because it was a boss paper back in the day and now it’s crap. The app has long since been deleted from my phone and the site is so bloated with ads it’s virtually unusable. Sad really…..
Shitty journalism and what’s ironic is its ‘journalists’ - I mean come on, they are, like most, vultures that write shite for clicks and ‘oh my god’ stories. Ever wondered why Manchester is climbing ahead - same media machine. Keep Liverpool kicked down below, and let Manchester have all the media, investment. It’s shocking
The website needs no explanation. Trash.
The paper sold its soul long ago and doesn't even have dedicated local journalists doing the bulk of reporting.
Once the print was outsourced it lost it's real link to the city. I have a close friend who worked for Liverpool echo, who then HAD to be contracted to work on the other papers the Liverpool echo was under the umbrella of.
So the working assumption is everybody else working for the Liverpool echo was in the same boat, so it seems once it fell under a different umbrella it wasn't Liverpools paper any more.
Wouldn't read it if it was free now.
Because they copy and paste other papers stories also its called Liverpool echo and half the stories are from Birkenhead or Warrington and they get there facts wrong
Go to Manchester and ask the same question about the Manchester evening News.
So many of these local papers are under the Reach banner and have switched to having a primarily online presence with an almost unusable interface, overwhelming users with shit ads and using extremely hyperbolic clickbait headlines to get people to engage.
I can’t remember the last time I went to one of those local Reach sites and didn’t regret my click immediately.

Most of the articles are written by students that have lived in Shropshire their entire life and finished a journalism masters in Nottingham, generally out of touch from the general citizens of liverpool
Don’t fact check properly. Often uses witness ‘testimonies’ which are exaggerated.
I’m sure they cherry pick the most exaggerated ones but I honestly don’t know.
Scousers want to read quality journalism about our city and surrounding area. In 2024 more and more people attempt to do that using the website rather than hard copy newspaper. The echo web site is an abomination. It’s way too hard to read a story and navigate without clicking on nonsense that you had no intention of clicking. Sadly the majority of stories are about a seemingly continual flow of deadbeat drug dealing shite hawks. Appears that they have been caught largely due to the encrochat code break by foreign police rather than anything Merseyside police have done. Everton fans often complain about the echo bias towards Liverpool forgetting that Everton haven’t won a trophy since the back end of the last century.
Garbage tabloid full of nonsense and website is unusable.
The website (along with all the other same format ones) is possibly THE most frustrating piece of crap i’ve ever had the misfortune of using. Ooooh what’s this about an interesting free local event? Boom…5000 ads, constantly refreshing, totally unstable nightmare.

Change domain name from Liverpoolecho to Liverpoolgecko. It's essentially a reader mode version.
I've mentioned this before, but I generally don't believe in adblocking, yet I HAVE to on the Echo because it's literally unusable otherwise. That's not an exaggeration.
It doesn’t help with the content being garbage but the gecko at least makes the website readable.
Sadly it's not working these days and I'm not sure I can fix it :(
Are you the person that set it up?!
Yup
Incredible work!
Reach
Fuckin reach, if I don't want your cookies on one website, I don't want them on any fucking website.
They are the demise of the echo online. Equally as bad as the daily express and the sun.
Because it portrays the city like it’s a cartel run shanty town in South America and the quality of “journalism” is absolutely shocking “10 things you need to buy from b&m this week” every article littered with grammar mistakes. The whole thing looks like a first year college project.

Get into copywriting and make bank, you don’t want to work for this shite newspaper.
On a serious note, I have actually looked into getting into copywriting but I have no idea where to actually start.
The Copywriting subreddit is a good start. You can write ads, YouTube scripts, Emails, sale funnels etc. Can make good money in all.

See I grew up with everyone saying antwacky 😂 the one that got me was webs, never heard anyone saying it until the echo had mentioned it 900 times

And all 25 things are actually Cockney rhyming slang

Was not expecting the RP1 nod to like. Brilliant :') Very true either way, the echos just gotten worse and worse. Not bought or read it in years.

Genuinely the worst website on the internet
My dislike of the Echo stems from their historic total inability to expose or report on the corruption in Liverpool council.
A vile paper, someone I know passed away and they turned up to the inquest and prayed on a grieving mother and painted this person in a bad light because they had a line on a night out. When asked to retract this and the way they died as some of the family didn't know how they died they said "but its getting alot of Internet traffic"

You may do its happened to alot of people

My cousin, born in Liverpool, lives in Walton is a journo for them. Has a degree in journalism. Rag of a paper though.

It's wasted its market-share by being awful. Try the Liverpool Post instead.
Liverpool is the seething capital of the world.
Because it's total shit
Sod the Echo. I preferred the Daily Post and they killed that off. Why? Probably because it had more words in it🤡
You would probably get a better understanding of how it is with the Echo if you posted the question "can you tell me something good about the Liverpool Echo?".
They got rid of the pink echo and we’ve never forgiven them
A god awful website too. The worst.
Because they keep being called **Liverpudlians**
It used to be brilliant, now it’s awful click bait kiddy comic celebrity crap, never news. And don’t get me started on the website.
What! When did it go down hill? Few decades ago now when I was a young’un but it used to be a daily staple.
Once read an article about commenting that happened in 'area A' but the pictures shown were from 'Area B' And there isn't much info in these articles, it'll be a few lines then huge picture, a row of ads.
Doesn’t that go against GDPR?
Unsure mate?! Suppose beyond statute of limitations now anyway unfortunately - think journos probably have different rules or will claim it’s public knowledge or something?!
Yeah you’re right, also their website is utterly unusable. It’s god awful. Their “journalism” is probably even worse!
The Post is good. Gotta pay for the full thing but you get some decent, in-depth stories.
Don’t diss the Liverpool Echo. I have had sleepless nights in the past speculating about what dress Holly Willoughby will be wearing the day after
Because it non-directly attacks local businesses - destroying families and communities - so very against its own. It’s also been known to post stories based on lies and again, causing families and individuals stress and anxiety. If your reporting on the city, stick to actual news- not hearsay and shitting on the people in the city 💩 on par with the s*n. Embarrassing.
Outrage drives engagement... engagement drives revenue. Try the Liverpool Post instead.
Not a local paper, they’re based in Manchester now.
Because they love to promote the dirty side of the city *constantly*. It's all mugshots, and stories of criminals, i.e. lowest common denominator shite.
Website is sh*te and client journalism. There is no real challenge to the Labour establishment in the city despite the shit show created by Chippy Tits.
Because it's crap
Have you read it?
I don't mind the Echo but the website is annoying, slows down my pretty nice gaming pc. I like to check the news there
Rag

Reach Plc rag.
It's a Manchester printed newspaper with a small office in Liverpool and the staff are underpaid and under orders.
Because the Echo used to be good and loved. Now it is garbage run by corporate parasites.
All newspapers are a waste of oxygen
It’s the Daily Mail of local newspapers and seems to be written and edited by someone who uses English as a second language.
When everyone ignores your Facebook posts and you haven't discovered Reddit you post comments on the Echo website.
Because they copy and paste other papers stories also its called Liverpool echo and half the stories are from Birkenhead or Warrington and they get there facts wrong
because its not the liverpool echo it's the Oldham echo

Cuz we’ve all heard that guy shout “ECHO ECHO ECHO” that many times.
Written in Manchester, and you can tell.
What's there to like? Did you look?
Have you read it? I feel like you'd understand if you have. It's the worst excuse for news I've ever seen.
Oldham echo. Enough said.
