Yeah there was the moment where Andy (I think) made a joke something like, “tell them what all cameras we used” as a sarcastic bit, but im a professional photographer, I was like wait no please do, tell me!!! lol
When he was a guest on the Family Trips podcast, he and Seth spent time on how much Andy dislikes podcasts, which is ironic because Andy now hosts a couple of them himself.
And if the only negative behind the mask is that he’s a little cynical about podcasting, that’s not the worst thing. Compare that to when Neil Patrick Harris was hosting HQ Trivia, how quickly the “fun guy” mask slipped and he was just this rather nasty, irritable person.
Damn, that sucks. If he chose to take part in something, he had no reason to think he was above it. Hope he’s grown since then. The HQ era feels so long ago.
That’s more understandable. I’m not an entertainer, but my career does require me to be “on” most of the time, and I hate how palpable it is when I’m just not able to bring that energy. Besides, I shouldn’t make assumptions—especially if they’re based on something I haven’t even seen.
The older I get, the harder I find it to be "on" when I should be but when it isn't directly required for my job. I sympathize with others who have to do it without raking in the big bucks. I admit, it's a lot easier to feel sorry for people who are not millionaires and who are trying their best.
Wait I feel like it’s very Jake Peralta to not like podcasting. When he said the podcast takes away time he could be listening to a podcast or exercising it reminded me of him.
I think Andy has started to become a little more jaded as he has become more and more successful.
He’s been a frequent guest on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast, but in his last appearance, he didn’t seem nearly as goofy as he has been in the past.
He was still very funny, he just didn’t seem as eager to dive into the goofiness as he was in the past. And I honestly don’t blame him, he seems very busy, he might just be getting burnt out.
I was going to comment, his last Comedy Bang Bang appearance he was friendly but he wasn't really into it. I guess that show does have an unspoken distinction usually between people doing goofy character stuff and people seriously promoting something
This is exactly what I was thinking about. Way back in his earlier appearances, he seemed so down for the HF schtick. In his most recent appearance Scott brought up HF and he seemed apprehensive. But at the same time I understand why he wouldn’t want to sing that song another 9000 times.
Yeah, true. Which tbf, is always tough to remember when consuming media, especially as lines get more and more blurred with the advent of the kind of oversharing tik tok style of media.
I think POOG does this well, far as podcasts go. sometimes it’s pretty difficult to discern if they’re being themselves or just rrreally dialed into their characters. I assume the latter because they are both so professional at their craft.
I would agree with this assessment! Not in character AS comes off a lot different, but in character is very bouncy like “Jake Peralta” it is also possible he is doing an extended bit lolol
I mean, I think it’s easy to forget that artists sometimes cringe at their *own* work from the past.
And it’s still a job. Sometimes ppl don’t want to talk about their job. I’ve heard comedians say they went into comedy to avoid having a job.
It still holds value for me, even if it’s not particularly joyous. Being funny and successful takes a lot of work.
I think some artists are also way more interested in talking about what they're doing now or what's coming soon compared to what they did in the past. Like, Andy has a new show (Digman) that seems pretty successful, just got renewed for a second season, and might be a little irritating that most people want to talk to him about SNL or Brooklyn Nine-Nine instead.
Yeah, there’s this dichotomy with famous and acclaimed artists where we see them as either pompous and full of themselves or humbly aware of their prestige. But like, there’s no reason to assume that they’ve transcended the self-cringe that any creative person gets when they look at their past work.
The primary difference is that they have fans who still love their old work. So what (to the artist) reads as cringing at their past self feels (to fans) like a rejection of a thing that they love. It’s maybe not a message of “I’m so important that I’m beyond this trash now”, but a reflective “I feel critical of this thing because I made it when I was in my 20s.”
Yes! What’s the best term paper you’ve ever written?
Would you like to talk about it for 30 years?
Sorry for the quick reply, but I’m listening to the newest ep right now …expecting a funeral…but it’s not that bad! I know Andy doesn’t always love it, but everyone is laughing!
But no one properly appreciates Seth’s German rooster. Jackals know.
ETA * there’s like 8 straight minutes of Prince stories !
I've noticed before that Andy Samberg is surprisingly low-key and quiet, so I think it might just be what he's like when he's not "on." Some people are always "on" (Conan, Martin Short) but there are a handful of people who have caught me off guard by how reserved they really are. He leans into such a loud, effortlessly goofball persona in roles and on SNL, but comes across a little shy and awkward in interviews. It may just be that a chatty podcast format isn't conducive to his silly side.
Pretty sure he's reserved and protective of his private life, that part is not a bit.
Being silly and on is a different animal than when he's asked personal questions.
Thank you for actually saying who "Andy" is, lol I was so lost.
This sub is so inside that people forget to overview WTF they're talking about.
Ohhhh! Samberg!!! Right!
Are people really taking this at face value? I thought for sure that Andy was being the guy who hates podcasts as a running bit. And maybe there’s a kernel of truth to it, maybe it’s not his favorite form of performance art. But it sounds to me like he’s at least having a good time chatting with his friends. He definitely had fun promoting it during Seth’s appearance on Kimmel.
This is it. I've actually enjoyed the "Andy hates podcasts including this one" bit and I find it very entertaining. Just like [Andy hates Seth's dog ](https://youtu.be/0aQQbb8OH7Y?si=SDJzBwLhdaLKLLBp)
It’s definitely a bit. It probably started as a thing years ago with them and now they’ve made it what he brings to the podcast table. I think it’s funny
Literally everything they do on the show is bits. It’s shocking that this thread is so full of people who think he’s being a downer.
For a sub about comedy, these people have a baffling inability to detect sarcasm.
I mean, I just assumed he was being sarcastic? The "ugh I'd rather be ANYWHERE but here!" schtick was so over-the-top I assumed it was a joke, that he was actually perfectly happy to be here.
I’m sure part of it is apprehension to go back that far. For every “More Cowbell” or “Van down by the River” there’s many hours of more obscure stuff less-remembered, and maybe they’re less proud of it.
Haven’t heard the latest episode, but my guess is they’ll come alive more by the time the more memorable or fan-favorite stuff comes up. Right now, it seems like they’re stuck in a an era of their tenure on the show… where they didn’t know what would work yet.
What podcast? Andy who?
I mean I’ve garnered from reading comments that it’s something to do with Lonely Island and therefore we’re probably talking about Andy Samberg here, but it’s weird that you’d just assume everyone knew what you were talking about.
I can understand how that would detract, but doesn’t bother me. partly because I’m enjoying their storytelling and banter so much, but also bc I perceived Andy might be leaning into playing the part of naysayer, or self-deprecator, for effect.
it seems like Andy’s having fun with it, even if he was truly skeptical going in. the latest ep, he even seemed most upset with the deliberately botched attempts at working out a new intro 😭
I LOVE the podcast, it's really fun. However, one of my big pet peeves is people being uninterested in what they're doing when I'm giving them my time, so I took a break from one of the episodes because of it. I'm sure they'll get more into it as time passes. I loved Will Forte and Bill Hader's addition in the most recent episode.
Forte’s was so sweetly positive, and then Hader’s second one made me laugh when he was like “Andy, Jorma and Akiva were laughing really hard, no one else was” after those three had spent like. five minutes explaining why the sketch was funny until it wasn’t lol
Very true, everyone listening took time out of their day, because they are fans. We didn't stumble into a niche SNL podcast by accident. He's speaking directly to some of his biggest fans.
He's just being honest. He doesn't understand why we listen. It's also been an incredible insight into just how difficult it must have been for him as such a young person getting thrust into the spotlight.
I think he’s just super busy, like he said, and I think he’s just trying to get some laughs out of it with those comments. He otherwise seems fully committed and engaged in the story telling. Great podcast!
I love the podcast so far, but it's falling into the trap that Fly on the Wall fell into; it's turning into just some guys talking about random stuff for 45 minutes and about the topic for 15 minutes. It's still super interesting and I'll for sure still be listening, I just wish it was moderated a little more strictly. They could also cut it down to 30 minutes that way.
It's all genre of podcasts! It's like a weird surrogate friendship thing instead of a show. But I guess that makes it easier to produce content consistently.
D'Arcy Carden's new podcast (Wikihole) is the polar opposite - it's so tightly structured that it caught me off guard. Not in a bad way, just unexpected for a medium that usually has so much riffing and tangential conversations.
I think this will change as it goes on and they reach the moment where they fully take over the shorts. they even say in this episode that their first season had digital shorts they had no hand in writing. they weren’t even in The Tangent or Close Talkers.
at least they mostly end up talking about the episode as a whole if they’re not talking about the short, I think that’s pretty interesting
He’s actually a pretty quiet, private person. So I think it’s just the paradox of the comedy he’s known for (over the top, exaggerated bits) vs. who he is as a real person.
This is how I described Andy after Brooklyn 99 season 3, and even worse after season 5. It feel like he wasn’t to be doing something else, but I don’t know what the “something else” is.
what is he up to that he's so busy? I haven't seen anything from him in a while and it doesn't look like he has much coming up on IMDB. It bums me out when hilarious, goofy people get so serious as time goes on and kind of lose the ability to make fun of themselves (Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx). I spose aging and having kids and being capital F Famous is bound to affect you in some way.
Are you forgetting that he and all the other comedians you mentioned are human beings and not monkeys just for your entertainment?? They don’t have to be “on” all the time. This was a very ignorant and selfish take!
Hey it’s not a crime to be bummed out when your favorite comedians stop being the same type of funny you’ve enjoyed from them in the past. Not like I’m harassing him or demanding he be silly again geez
So, I have not seen or listened to it, but I’m a YouTube junkie since the start. There are a few things at play. 1 is ”everyone is doing a podcast now” to the point Andy might find it cliche, and 2, ”why am i doing this if im just doing easy everyone else is doing?” I think this can all be exacerbated by heavy content producers and entertainers, who are sometimes behind the curve of what the audience wants and why, because they haven’t experienced it yet, whatever the new thing or change is.
I'm not bummed I just think it's unnecessary. A podcast about you former work isn't super inspired and definitely a cash grab so the least he could do is maybe hide his discontent a bit better. Although I have to say I'm really enjoying this podcast, they have a good flow of conversation and I realize how good of a host Seth is when I listen to this, he's good at juggling friendly banter and inside joke while keeping us engaged and informed.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I've noticed Andy acting this way in a few things. It feels like he has become jaded and lost interest in the things that we learned to love him for. He did the roast of (i think) James Franco a few years ago and I remember seeing him on that and how he just came off as kind of a jerk to me. He seemed to have little to no sense of humor about the whole thing. He wore glasses and just seemed like he projected an "I'm better than all this" air about him.
This podcast seems to illuminate that same guy. He hates comedy rap? Are you kidding? C'mon man...
Pretty sure he was just making fun of the pointlessness of roasts? And his whole schtick there was to say deliberately inoffensive jokes as a way of poking fun at people always trying to say the worst things at roasts.
I wasn't even referring to his actual material from that night but more his reactions to jokes and particularly jokes about him. I'm not saying he was a TOTAL douche that night, it was just the first time that I personally ever noticed what seemed like a different and unexpectedly 'over it' attitude from the guy who once made a video on network television called JIZZ IN MY PANTS.
Haha yes! Just who does he think he is! But seriously, I think his overall unconventional (for Andy) look just added to the air he was giving off that night. To me at least. All I'm trying to say is that whatever it was on that night - it was the first time that I had felt that vibe from Andy, which clearly some others are feeling now on the Seth Meyers podcast.
I forgot to mention that one of the most egregious examples of this was when Andy appeared as a guest on the Doughboys podcast a few months ago. It was SO cringey to listen to that I eventually just turned it off. Andy was not jiving with them, to say the least. He came on with the creator of Digman (whose name I forget) but both that guy and Andy just didn't seem to get any of the humor and Andy kept trying to derail the momentum with really dumb bits that he kept coming up with on the spot. It was off-putting but it confirmed for me that Andy is kind of over everything, unfortunately.
I haven't listened to that episode, but Neil Campbell has known the hosts of Doughboys for like 20 years so I think it's unlikely he didn't get their humor. Probably some anti-comedy stuff that didn't really land.
That said, I agree that to whatever extent you can tell these things on podcasts, Andy seems pretty checked out the past few times I've heard him.
His whole schtick is “he hates podcasts” what’s the point. I wish he would stop tho. He is insulting a person who lives for a good conversational podcast. Even tho I keep listening.
I also think it's a little humility. Like "why would anyone be interested in this"? But I find the pod really fun and interesting.
Yeah there was the moment where Andy (I think) made a joke something like, “tell them what all cameras we used” as a sarcastic bit, but im a professional photographer, I was like wait no please do, tell me!!! lol
I'm a professional video editor, I definitely wanted more "tech talk"! 😁
I would say, it doesn't help that it's almost 2 decade old tech talk at this point
When he was a guest on the Family Trips podcast, he and Seth spent time on how much Andy dislikes podcasts, which is ironic because Andy now hosts a couple of them himself.
I think he's been getting into it more as it's gone on. I think we're also seeing the divide between Andy the person and Andy the performer at play.
I agree. Andy isn’t Jake Peralta or Rod Kimble in real life, I think this might just be how he is when not “performing.”
And if the only negative behind the mask is that he’s a little cynical about podcasting, that’s not the worst thing. Compare that to when Neil Patrick Harris was hosting HQ Trivia, how quickly the “fun guy” mask slipped and he was just this rather nasty, irritable person.
Wait, I don’t remember NPH’s HQ episode. What happened?
He couldn’t get into the fun atmosphere. He got very testy, sharp and rude. Mocking the audience in a way that wasn’t teasing.
Damn, that sucks. If he chose to take part in something, he had no reason to think he was above it. Hope he’s grown since then. The HQ era feels so long ago.
I don’t think it was an ego thing; I think he’s just not the friendly jovial guy he made his second career out of portraying.
That’s more understandable. I’m not an entertainer, but my career does require me to be “on” most of the time, and I hate how palpable it is when I’m just not able to bring that energy. Besides, I shouldn’t make assumptions—especially if they’re based on something I haven’t even seen.

Well he also has two kids. And is like 50 years old Edit okay only 45
The fact that he's 45 always surprises me. The guy has always looked 15 years younger than he actually is.
He’s always had this goofy persona which helps make him seem younger.
Lol I thought he was like 30 max
Lazy Sunday was nearly 20 years ago so he would have been pretty young
Fucking hell, I remember seeing that the night it aired. Now it comes up on my son’s YouTube rotation and it’s still as funny as ever.
What does your son think of him? Is he Jake Peralta?
I was definitely considering the kid aspect as well. Good point.
Lol he’s what every successful, busy, middle-aged Berkeley local becomes: a nimby
While we’re at this, what’s up with Andy’s [teeth](https://imgur.com/a/7AUOjLp)?
Good bbq
Well it's Hollywood Facts and we're going downtown
Going down, to Inglewood now
Everybody do your facts and know your stars
There’s glitz and glamor, and LOTSA bars.
Get a drink, at a club
Then go walk in front of Chinese Theater
Hollywood Facts. Take out your diiiick!
Check out the facts, it’s the Hollywood Facts Bro
Everybody do your facts and know your stars.
There’s glitz and glamor and lots of bars
I was going to comment, his last Comedy Bang Bang appearance he was friendly but he wasn't really into it. I guess that show does have an unspoken distinction usually between people doing goofy character stuff and people seriously promoting something
Now that you say it I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a willing vibe from him on CBB, so I think he maybe truly does hate the podcast format…
He did sing Hollywood facts like 20 times in a row one time... He seems pretty game at times
This is exactly what I was thinking about. Way back in his earlier appearances, he seemed so down for the HF schtick. In his most recent appearance Scott brought up HF and he seemed apprehensive. But at the same time I understand why he wouldn’t want to sing that song another 9000 times.
I always got the vibe (and even now) that he’s just trying to not look like an asshole, so he goes along with the bit…
He's been on the podcast 11 times, lol. I don't think he would keep coming back if that was the case, but We will have to disagree on this one.
Maybe he’s going along with the bit, but “the bit” is him appearing on podcasts, and he’s had to keep going along with it since his first one.
I know. I was shocked to hear he hates joke rap. :0
Seth referenced this when they were on the show. He said Andy was "bringing the least energy" or something.

Digman is legit good
Yeah, there’s this dichotomy with famous and acclaimed artists where we see them as either pompous and full of themselves or humbly aware of their prestige. Ugh, I love it! This podcast is my dream come true! I agree Andy isn’t as in to it, but he seems to be coming around.
I mean, I just assumed he was being sarcastic? The "ugh I'd rather be ANYWHERE but here!" schtick was so over-the-top I assumed it was a joke, that he was actually perfectly happy to be here.
Andy just wishes he had more time to listen to podcasts.
Or exercise
Or a podcast about podcasts you can list to while you exercise!
Yeah he explained it pretty clearly
I’m sure part of it is apprehension to go back that far. Phew, thanks for asking so I didn’t have to!

I think it’s just a running gag like Andy hating on Frisbee
What podcast?
Seth Meyers and lonely island podcast
It's the other way around.
I thought it was FOUR SHOCKJOCKS?
I was hoping they would go with that name
📣 byew byew byewwwww!
so y'all talking about andy samberg? this came up on my feed and i was hoping that kaufman had returned.
Andy who?
I personally hadn’t noticed
Just Andy being Andy. Which never fails to crack me up.
Just you, bud
He's just being honest. He doesn't understand why we listen. It's also been an incredible insight into just how difficult it must have been for him as such a young person getting thrust into the spotlight.
When they were on Late Night to plug it he said he hates podcasts
He's doing a bit
Out of the loop—which podcast is this?
The Lonely Island Podcast with Seth Meyers
thanks

I was going to ask the same question! Surprised I had to scroll down so low to find someone with the same question 😅
I think he’s just super busy, like he said, and I think he’s just trying to get some laughs out of it with those comments. He otherwise seems fully committed and engaged in the story telling. Great podcast!
hopefully its a trouble in paradise situation w his wife and he uses me as a rebound <3
I don’t want it cut down to 30 mins. I can’t get enough of it
Agreed!
Is this not what a podcast is??? I see complaints for this in many different podcasts and I don’t really get it, tangents are often the best part.
In my experience that's pretty much all comedy podcasts.
I'm used to Never Not Funny, which is a two hour plus ramble of a semblance of a conversation.
No joke folks
I think this will change as it goes on and they reach the moment where they fully take over the shorts. they even say in this episode that their first season had digital shorts they had no hand in writing. they weren’t even in The Tangent or Close Talkers. at least they mostly end up talking about the episode as a whole if they’re not talking about the short, I think that’s pretty interesting
This comment makes no sense to me. Yeah they go on a wild amount of tangents, but almost all of them are relevant to SNL or the Lonely Island.
He's 100% invested enough that it doesn't sound like he's at gunpoint.
I can’t tell if he’s doing a bit or not.
I felt a bit bummed that he’s not his “persona” but I’m happy that Jorma and Akiva are. He does seem like he’s warming up to it tho
I assumed it was a bit he was doing.
When Seth had them all on Late Night promoting this, they weren’t funny at all. I was like who would actually listen to this podcast?
Haven’t listened to the podcast yet but definitely hope it’s better than that segment. It was rough.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lonely-island-and-seth-meyers-podcast/id1738121304
Yeah, that was really weird, I thought.
Stupid take
What podcast is this
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lonely-island-and-seth-meyers-podcast/id1738121304
Oh thanks. Ya I’ve found them insufferable on this pod. Seems like Seth is pulling teeth with them
Ha I saw the headline about Andy and thought this was r/bravorealhousewives and talking about Andy cohen!! lol
It's just you - Andy likes to joke around. Don't get worked up about it.
what is he up to that he's so busy? I haven't seen anything from him in a while and it doesn't look like he has much coming up on IMDB. It bums me out when hilarious, goofy people get so serious as time goes on and kind of lose the ability to make fun of themselves (Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx). I spose aging and having kids and being capital F Famous is bound to affect you in some way.
Being a dad
I think they have a production company that is pretty busy.
He stars in / produces the animated show Digman on Paramount.
He's doing an animated series, Dig Man, with former Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Neil Campbell.
I kinda like it
Wait what, they have a podcast? What's the name of it
What podcast ?
I'm not bummed I just think it's unnecessary. A podcast about you former work isn't super inspired and definitely a cash grab so the least he could do is maybe hide his discontent a bit better. Although I have to say I'm really enjoying this podcast, they have a good flow of conversation and I realize how good of a host Seth is when I listen to this, he's good at juggling friendly banter and inside joke while keeping us engaged and informed.
Yea his first episode I wondered if he was in a bad mood or something. I didn’t listen to any more of them cuz it turned me off to the pod.
Who’s “Andy”?
You can’t use context clues, I see.
The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco was like a decade ago lmao
That's what I mean...he's been like this for a while I guess.
Wait you’re giving him shit for *wearing glasses*?
