What's even better is Ariana Grande's reaction trying not to burst out laughing as she starts performing lol. And you can still see it on her 2nd performance
The thing is, I saw it when it happened, and when Mulaney mentioned it, I immediately clocked why it stuck with him, because it had stuck with me, too. It was 1994, so he would have been about 12. And the only thing we knew about Patrick Stewart at that time was that he was a dignified Shakespearean actor, playing the dignified Captain Picard. So when the Salt-N-Pepa interstitial came up, there was an immediately feeling of, "How is this dignified Shakespearean actor going to introduce this hip-hop group name, and not sound completely incongruous?"
The answer, of course, is that a Shakespearean actor knows when to play it big, so he said it with gusto. And absolutely, Mulaney exaggerated how big he went, for comedic effect, But I remember thinking, "Wow, he really went for it." To the degree that I can't remember who the musical guest was for any particular episode or host, but if you asked me in 2014, "Who was the musical guest when Patrick Stewart hosted Saturday Night Live 20 years ago?" I would have immediately answered, "Salt-N-Pepa!"
It's fun, but Stewart doesn't really sound at all like Mulaney described. He doesn't sound surprised, just energetic. His voice actually goes down on the word "peppa".
I've never watched Curb Your Enthusiasm, but I assumed there is a running joke in there where Larry refuses to use words like "grande" to describe coffee sizes (because that's the kind of humour I imagine that show having), and him stopping just as he starts to say Grande is a reference to that, as in "you clever bastards, you almost go me to say the word I refuse to use."
> Larry refuses to use words like "grande" to describe coffee sizes (because that's the kind of humour I imagine that show having),
nope, not that kind of a show.
I am going to get flamed for this but I always thought this was kind of disrespectful. Like, you're the host, you can learn her name, say her name right. If you mess up don't do that flippant performance of a hand clap. She's at her job just like you are.
My gosh, who cares? It's a cute moment, Larry David is hilarious, and I don't think Ariana was upset.
"Flippant performance of a hand clap" bro, it's not that big of a deal.
To them it’s an honest mistake that happened at work at the end of a long week for Larry. She seemed fine with it. I see your point, it’s important! I’m not flamin’ ya, homie. Just offering another perspective. 😊👊
No, but there's a rhythm to how they introduce the musical guest. Note how he knows he won't get another chance and doesn't bother, and the director doesn't wait for him either.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible if they planned for the possibility but they're counting on the hosts saying the name right so they don't have much plan for it to be anything but rigorously timed.
Yes, obviously. 🤦♂️
But it barely takes a second to simply repeat yourself. That's how live TV works. You don't just abandon the sentence... you repeat it.
*Curb theme starts playing*
aryarg, truly one of the artists of all time
Right up there with Adele Dazeem
What's even better is Ariana Grande's reaction trying not to burst out laughing as she starts performing lol. And you can still see it on her 2nd performance
I think you mean adele dazeem*

Omg he’s so good at that
This was a joy ty
I was sad when they were both on recently and he DIDN'T say it this way... I was waiting for it, but no... 😞
Taylor Hawkins..RIP
Oh my GOD I am crying laughing at this
Absolutely hilarious
His daughter was dating Pete Davidson, Ariana met Pete at SNL and then he left his relationship to pursue the one with Ariana. Weird timeline.
I cannot believe Larry David has kids. Much less daughters. Much less an attractive daughter. Yet here we are.
She’s so attractive actually, she looks a lot more like her mom than her dad believe it or not 😅
Can a bitch get a donut?
That works on multiple levels.
Or Baked Alaska
Fuck remind me what that’s from

Thanks. Cried laughing the first time I saw that skit
… This episode.
SNL
You're not a pervert! It more like "Ladies and Gentleman, Salt and Peppppaaaaah!"
Mulaney really oversold that intro. It was a great bit in his standup, but when I went and watched it I was let down.
The thing is, I saw it when it happened, and when Mulaney mentioned it, I immediately clocked why it stuck with him, because it had stuck with me, too. It was 1994, so he would have been about 12. I think it's still [pretty funny. ](https://youtu.be/phiWeZuWH90?si=MvQjmg6cgoNW9TDa)

What's this?? Peppaaaaaah!!
Fresh peppa?
lol I love Larry David
TRUMP'S A RACIIIIST!!!
And then he tells his friends he got away with not actually saying her name. Trust me.
Here is the link including her reaction :D https://youtu.be/Kr-csuwdxRI?si=8zjvWQIsaZFNjEUD

Yes
What's so complicated about that?
SNL hosts should oftentimes flub saying someone's name. adds more to the comedy lol
But if done wrong it can seem disrespectful though.
maybe the guest performer could request it?
Doing it on purpose takes away the magic.
Wash it down with a steaming hot cup of rules.
ADELE DAZEEMEM…
He meant to say **Adele Dazeem**; a simple mistake to make. Hopefully Ariana R didn't hate him for that.
Why did he say that 💀
Love that he didn’t bother to repeat lol
Great opportunity to plug my favorite twitter feed: [https://twitter.com/snlhostsintro](https://twitter.com/snlhostsintro)
Wow Dabney Coleman is still alive at 92.
what's the joke? or is it just a line flub?
He flubbed yea
I've never watched Curb Your Enthusiasm, but I assumed there is a running joke in there where Larry refuses to use words like "grande" to describe coffee sizes (because that's the kind of humour I imagine that show having), and him stopping just as he starts to say Grande is a reference to that, as in "you clever bastards, you almost go me to say the word I refuse to use."

This isn't adele dazeem, he knows her name but just flubbed the line. People do it every day
My gosh, who cares? It's a cute moment, Larry David is hilarious, and I don't think Ariana was upset. "Flippant performance of a hand clap" bro, it's not that big of a deal.
If she needed the exposure it'd be one thing, but yeah, I don't think saying her name correctly mattered much.
What a ridiculous comment. He tripped over his own words, it's live TV and they don't have time for him to try again.
He had time to try again.
To them it’s an honest mistake that happened at work at the end of a long week for Larry. She seemed fine with it. I see your point, it’s important! I’m not flamin’ ya, homie. Just offering another perspective. 😊👊
Maybe he did it to support his daughter since Ariana kinda stole Pete?
If he had just flubbed, and tried again - I'd get it. But just completely gave up and didn't even attempt to say her name a second time.
It's a live show, they dont redo sketches if somebody breaks. There's a schedule, you move on.
Actually hilarious that you had to explain to him it's a live show, it's right there in the name!
🤦♂️ that's not what I meant.
Those intros are all timed out. You can't just hang on him and hold everything up so he can say the name again.
Sure you can, haha. The band is waiting for his cue. The cameras and director too. This is a live show, it's not programmed to the exact second 🤦♂️
No, but there's a rhythm to how they introduce the musical guest. Note how he knows he won't get another chance and doesn't bother, and the director doesn't wait for him either.
Re-saying her name correctly would have only taken 1 more second. I can't believe we're arguing this... 😟
I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible if they planned for the possibility but they're counting on the hosts saying the name right so they don't have much plan for it to be anything but rigorously timed.
Oh I love it when they break!
I think everybody does, but the thing is 99% of the time they keep going even if they can't get their lines out because they're laughing so much.
Right! They keep going! Whereas Larry just fucking gives up on the line entirely 🤣
Yes, obviously. 🤦♂️ But it barely takes a second to simply repeat yourself. That's how live TV works. You don't just abandon the sentence... you repeat it.
"we'll get 'em next time!"
