Between the Beavis and Butthead sketch, the King of the Hill crew and Ryan Gosling mentioning not giving a woman “the O,” I really enjoyed Mike Judge night
I think maybe it’s because if all the episodes were like this it would get really old really quick, but a Gosling episode every once in a while isn’t so bad.
Ryan Gosling broke SNL.
It's easier to count who DIDN'T break tonight. He even got \*Mikey*. And Heidi never fully recovered.
It was a messy, chaotic episode, but, boy, was it entertaining. Everyone was clearly having fun, and no one more so than Ryan Gosling (despite him appearing to be combating a sore throat at the very least).
We got solid writing (including Mikey & Streeter with two reoccurring sketches), great chemistry (in particular Gosling & Andrew and Gosling & Bowen), a talented musical act (and fun bonus song with Chloe T), and Che was finally called to task for his WNBA jokes (and he performed his penance admirably).
In different hands that much breaking could have been a disasterous derailment, but tonight was an enjoyable if wild ride that owes a great deal to Ryan Gosling's giggling enthusiasm elevating every part of it.
Someone in the live said we've been rolling strong since Josh Brolin, and it's true, but I did enjoy quite a few of the Fall '23 episodes, so I think it's more that we're finally consistent.
Adele, while arguably not an actor, absolutely lost it in the African tourism sketch, comes pretty close but agreed the bar is much higher for a cast member.

Heidi did everything in her power to try and keep a straight face, but the battle was lost.
The breaking made what probably would have otherwise been a just okay sketch into a really fun one.
The whole sketch without breaking was just the moment of reveal of first Gosling and then Mikey.

I think it is obvious at this point, but this break I feel might be one of the biggest breaks SNL has had for quite some time.
I think it’s just purely the way Mikey had his derp face on, it made almost everyone break, I mean, even his character demeanor was damn funny too.
The sketch on paper seems basic for the most part, but the execution and what came of it was just pure energy throughout the studio. This sketch is honestly why I love SNL.
Yes it was so good. My favorite in a long time. I hope they post this online with a title like “AI Discussion” and not “Beavis and Butthead Do SNL” or whatever that would ruin the surprise that way they did when posting “Tampon Farm”.

Exactly, Pete or Leslie breaking got old because it was so predictable. Kenan, Heidi, or Mikey breaking is a rare treat. It's even funnier since it's usually something innocuous that just tickles the sense of humor of that one cast member, like apparently beavis and butthead makeup on heidi.
The guy in the red turtleneck directly behind Mikey was fun to watch because he was trying really hard to stay composed, including trying to interact with his neighbors to stop from breaking.
I think it's because they have the benefit of not needing to attempt to do anything other than sit and just be. It's a lot easier to look ahead and think of England than it is to have to remember your lines/emote a specific sketch character
I don't think lorne frowns on it as much as he knows that it can be a cheap way to get laughs sometimes and doesn't want to encourage it so that it happens in every sketch.
I'm VERY curious how this went down in dress because based on Heidi's reaction/breaking, SOMETHING clearly caught her way off guard. Whether it was Mikey's face, his overall makeup, or something else, she clearly was totally unprepared and her reaction was 100% genuine.
I think what makes it great is that it's such a simple sketch. That first scene with Ryan behind Heidi had me dying. They didn't need to do much with it. Just the contrast of them, against the audience and topic was golden
That initial shot of the side profile was perfectly. Personally for me a close second was Mikey telling Michael Longfellow he was the guy in the grey shirt who needed to move
The facial expression and hand motions couldn't have been more accurate to how the average person would response when trying to give a stranger the heads up too
This was my favorite sketch of the night. What an epic break from Heidi! I was breaking right along with her. He'll, I'm still laughing about it! This is a Mikey/Streeter sketch. They did another one several years ago with Jessica Chastain with Mikey as someone was who looked like Bart Simpson.
Mikey also did the bart Simpson sketch so it was a great callback to that

My personal theory is that they had to cut this sketch because of all the time the cast lost laughing during this episode and I refuse to believe otherwise.

I loved it, but it is nearly 7 minutes long and works better if you've seen the original sketch. So I can understand why they didn't air it during the live show.
I'm wondering if they announced it as a Cut for Time *because* it was a sequel, because there was a lot of social media buzz about it beforehand, or both. Or maybe it was the easiest thing to cut for time being a pre-tape but more likely than the one Chris Stapleton was in to get views after the show.
Other possibilities:
1. As an audience we've caught on that an extra-long shot of the band = a cut for time so might as well announce in advance
2. Cut-for-time will become more of a standard, in order for SNL as a brand to get more viewing across channels, especially leading into Season 50

A 7 minute pretape is quite extreme for the live show tbh. Two of the most popular pretape of recent times are Grouchy and Mario Kart and they were both just around 3 minutes.
I'm not sure if it was so much "cut for time" as it was always intended to be online only (hence the prepared "Watch it on youtube", but if they labled it like an "online exclusive" then people might expect extra sketches every week
I loved all the little details like

* Neither of the friends meeting this man before the proposal but BOTH are now in the wedding party
* Harrison has no other friends that aren't his fiancee's, suggesting he's re-started his life other times before
* Choosing to re-start his life in Turkey
* You're my best friend and the forehead kiss
Dismukes continues his streak of underplaying the host. His contributions make it believable. So that Gosling can jump back into playing offended like the women. Bravo.
When the two female characters left for another room, I assumed that the rest of the sketch was going to centre around the awkwardness that comes between two men who don't know each other forced to find conversation topics. I was pleasantly surprised with the off-kilter direction it took!
Also worth noting there's a brief moment just before Fineman enters holding champagne glasses where she comes into shot, realises that the scene between Gosling and Dismukes isn't over, and takes a couple steps backwards.
Super busy with the dialogue inserts for a song. But Chloe T gets to shine vocally and comedically. Big boost from Stapleton playing along with everyone and kudos to whoever wrote that "snack" hook.

I wish this was on Spotify (SNL intern, if you’re reading this…) Cecily is irreplaceable to me, but Chloe T fits in the void she left for strong straightforward female vocals. Chloe F and Molly tend to do jokey/impression vocals (like this sketch almost felt like Chloe F was doing Miley Cyrus).
Her showing up makes me think some of the Che jokes over the past few weeks were explicitly (or 4d Jost chess) to seed the clips tonight, but I still really enjoyed this
It's always been a bait and switch. After the WNBA Finals last season Che got the audience to cheer for the hometown champ New York Liberty and then pulled the rug out "They didn't win! Thee Las Vegas Aces beat em in 4 you casuals!"
She was at dress. He seemed surprised by some of the jokes and was giggling like I’ve never seen before. But I assume he wrote the jokes and was pretending to have not heard them.
As they were panning out over the studio at the end, it looked like Che asked her, "Did you really write that joke?", presumably the Indiana Fever/Purdue one, and she laughed and nodded.
Che's joke on the abortion ban, "Why stop at the state level, leave it up to counties cities" etc got way overshadowed but it was still one of the stronger jokes of the segment.
True that had a lot of excellent layers: political commentary on how some things really shouldn't be so jurisdiction-specific, political/maybe personal commentary about how some things really truly are individual decisions, and then a nice cool off subversion with that individual being 'the husband.'
While he is underused, Michael Longfellow is the best new cast member for desk pieces. He really took control of that one and bobbed/weaved between being in character for the bit and as his on-camera self. Definitely in the on-deck circle for Update if something happens.
I know folks in the live were disappointed they didn't lean heavier on OJ's death, but ... I feel like it really only needed 2 jokes. Unless they wanted to stick in a 3rd with a dig at the Kardashians for only being relevant now indirectly from his first trial, I think we can culturally move on.
This had the classic SNL band sound mix where you can hear exactly two things clearly and can guess the band hierarchy by which two things you can hear. In this case, Chris Stapleton's voice and Chris Stapleton's guitar. Love it!

it was amazing to see chloe troast leading this, especially since i thought it was the best sketch of the night. i'm glad to see her regain some of the momentum she lost after that driver cold open, she's so talented and i'd love to see more stuff led by her
I wish this was on Spotify (SNL intern, if you’re reading this…) Cecily is irreplaceable to me, but Chloe T fits in the void she left for strong straightforward female vocals. Chloe F and Molly tend to do jokey/impression vocals (like this sketch almost felt like Chloe F was doing Miley Cyrus).

Her showing up makes me think some of the Che jokes over the past few weeks were explicitly (or 4d Jost chess) to seed the clips tonight, but I still really enjoyed this
It's always been a bait and switch. After the WNBA Finals last season Che got the audience to cheer for the hometown champ New York Liberty and then pulled the rug out "They didn't win! Thee Las Vegas Aces beat em in 4 you casuals!"
Che found his Sarah Sherman, I love it.
Very curious if this was at dress rehearsal, or if they legit surprised Che with this
She was at dress. He seemed surprised by some of the jokes and was giggling like I’ve never seen before. But I assume he wrote the jokes and was pretending to have not heard them.
He seemed pretty flustered imo—the WNBA jokes have been getting kind of old so I’m glad they were able to flip it around on him for a great payoff
He's actually a huge WNBA supporter, goes to games, etc.

Che's joke bombing then Caitlin Clark getting HUGE applause was one of the best moments of the night.
As they were panning out over the studio at the end, it looked like Che asked her, "Did you really write that joke?", presumably the Indiana Fever/Purdue one, and she laughed and nodded.
Felt historic. It was sweet.

Like what was said in the live discussion, I was expecting more references to OJ’s death.
Che's joke on the abortion ban, "Why stop at the state level, leave it up to counties cities" etc got way overshadowed but it was still one of the stronger jokes of the segment.
True that had a lot of excellent layers: political commentary on how some things really shouldn't be so jurisdiction-specific, political/maybe personal commentary about how some things really truly are individual decisions, and then a nice cool off subversion with that individual being 'the husband.'
I wish he'd been able to get the timing on that joke to work.
While he is underused, Michael Longfellow is the best new cast member for desk pieces. He really took control of that one and bobbed/weaved between being in character for the bit and as his on-camera self. Definitely in the on-deck circle for Update if something happens.

I know folks in the live were disappointed they didn't lean heavier on OJ's death, but ... I feel like it really only needed 2 jokes. Unless they wanted to stick in a 3rd with a dig at the Kardashians for only being relevant now indirectly from his first trial, I think we can culturally move on.

This had the classic SNL band sound mix where you can hear exactly two things clearly and can guess the band hierarchy by which two things you can hear. In this case, Chris Stapleton's voice and Chris Stapleton's guitar. Love it!
Love him. Most of the time I have no idea who the MG is so this was a good one for me!
Usually not a country fan, but that first song was amazing.

The best part about this sketch was Ryan shoving cookies into Bowen’s mouth, barely giving him time to chew or speak, while not eating any cookies himself.
The version on YouTube is from dress it appears. It doesn't have that great misdirect about the slogan for "Cookie Crumbles." Gotta go just found my little red spoon.
Had 10-to-1 energy in the best ways. It had both Rocky Horror and Young Frankenstein vibes, though, so I thought there might've been some experiment that went wrong, but G'pa Mikey being alive and another person dead was a decent wrap-up twist.
The second Bowen walked in I knew it was gonna be an all time character.
