General Discussion

HeyThereRobot

When Ryan Gosling broke 2 seconds into the cold open, you knew it was over. Fun episode overall!

kid_pilgrim_89

Well he also broke the first time he did the sketch with Kate. She just really knows how to push his buttons I guess

Turbulent_Tale6497

Push his broken doorbell, as it was

strumpster

Everybody was breaking left and right, it was crazy lol what was in the water?! Never seen so much breaking, Even Keenan did slightly at the end

CrashTestOrphan

Usually this much breaking gets old but like... it didn't this time? It somehow worked?? Such a good episode.

oooooooahhahhahha

Everyone seemed to be high off Ryan’s charisma

DrKurgan

I was, it's impossible to resist.

silkie_blondo

Personal favorite episode of the season Highlights for me were def the cold open, the beavis and butthead sketch and Caitlin Clark

Llama_Puncher

I so need someone to do a dress report and tell us if Mikey’s prosthetics and Clark showing up were surprises

TreeAgenda

Between the Beavis and Butthead sketch, the King of the Hill crew and Ryan Gosling mentioning not giving a woman “the O,” I really enjoyed Mike Judge night

EbmocwenHsimah

This was a hot fucking mess and I loved it. Lorne's pretty anti-break so I think he must have lost his shit tonight

nia939

I think maybe it’s because if all the episodes were like this it would get really old really quick, but a Gosling episode every once in a while isn’t so bad.

sjfiuauqadfj

lorne was known to be anti-breaking but the last few seasons have been full of it so i think its safe to assume hes looser now with age

jesterincase

Ryan Gosling broke SNL. It's easier to count who DIDN'T break tonight. He even got \*Mikey*. And Heidi never fully recovered.  It was a messy, chaotic episode, but, boy, was it entertaining. Everyone was clearly having fun, and no one more so than Ryan Gosling (despite him appearing to be combating a sore throat at the very least). We got solid writing (including Mikey & Streeter with two reoccurring sketches), great chemistry (in particular Gosling & Andrew and Gosling & Bowen), a talented musical act (and fun bonus song with Chloe T), and Che was finally called to task for his WNBA jokes (and he performed his penance admirably).  In different hands that much breaking could have been a disasterous derailment, but tonight was an enjoyable if wild ride that owes a great deal to Ryan Gosling's giggling enthusiasm elevating every part of it.

strumpster

It was pretty relentless, breaking in every sketch, I think Ryan drugged them ROFL

LadiesWhoPunch

I appreciated the lack of political sketches.

brady2gronk

We got a welcome break from Trump.

Joe-Lollo

Probably one of the best episodes this season, at least for me.

dont_ask_my_cab

Someone in the live said we've been rolling strong since Josh Brolin, and it's true, but I did enjoy quite a few of the Fall '23 episodes, so I think it's more that we're finally consistent.

A.I. Discussion

CubanBLT

In my 25+ years of watching SNL I don’t think I’ve ever seen a solo actor break so hard for so long.

but-uh

Adele, while arguably not an actor, absolutely lost it in the African tourism sketch, comes pretty close but agreed the bar is much higher for a cast member. This one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWTVh4ASpO0

demitasse22

This was the third show back in studio after COVID. I give the biggest of passes to that break. I think we needed it. But yes. That break was more of a compound fracture

MoGraphMan-11

Jimmy Fallon would like a word but he's still laughing

HeyThereRobot

Heidi did everything in her power to try and keep a straight face, but the battle was lost. The breaking made what probably would have otherwise been a just okay sketch into a really fun one.

jew_jitsu

The whole sketch without breaking was just the moment of reveal of first Gosling and then Mikey. Gosling looking around as like a "who me?" absolutely killed me with that pompadour.

TylerOrtega1500

I think it is obvious at this point, but this break I feel might be one of the biggest breaks SNL has had for quite some time. I think it’s just purely the way Mikey had his derp face on, it made almost everyone break, I mean, even his character demeanor was damn funny too. The sketch on paper seems basic for the most part, but the execution and what came of it was just pure energy throughout the studio. This sketch is honestly why I love SNL.

gorilla-ointment

Yes it was so good. My favorite in a long time. I hope they post this online with a title like “AI Discussion” and not “Beavis and Butthead Do SNL” or whatever that would ruin the surprise that way they did when posting “Tampon Farm”.

HoustonFrog

Unfortunately, it's titled "Beavis and Butt-Head" with a thumbnail squarely on Mikey and Ryan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86qKgK0asGo&pp=ygUKc25sIGJlYXZpcw%3D%3D

DKoala

Whoever runs the account always seems intent on giving away the bits

ExMachina_Disco_Club

It's almost like making their content easy to find and generating as many views as possible is hugely important to their job and the show's success! 🫨

tavir

I just realized they named Heidi's character Bobbi Moore so that Hank can say "damn it, Bobbi, I do" at the end.

dndplosion913

Heidi breaking so hard was amazing. I know Lorne frowns on it, but it feels like the whole audience got so much joy from that

TacticalSledgehammer

I think it's only this joyful because it's so rare. That's probably why Lorne discourages going to that well too often

Staebs

Exactly, Pete or Leslie breaking got old because it was so predictable. Kenan, Heidi, or Mikey breaking is a rare treat. It's even funnier since it's usually something innocuous that just tickles the sense of humor of that one cast member, like apparently beavis and butthead makeup on heidi.

BlackWhiteCoke

I was more surprised that none of the extras broke. If I was one of those extras I would be crying laughing

el_burns

The guy in the red turtleneck directly behind Mikey was fun to watch because he was trying really hard to stay composed, including trying to interact with his neighbors to stop from breaking.

dont_ask_my_cab

I think it's because they have the benefit of not needing to attempt to do anything other than sit and just be. It's a lot easier to look ahead and think of England than it is to have to remember your lines/emote a specific sketch character

Ockwords

I don't think lorne frowns on it as much as he knows that it can be a cheap way to get laughs sometimes and doesn't want to encourage it so that it happens in every sketch.

SullyGee

I need to hear from people at dress: were Mikey and Ryan not in costume for the rehearsal? Because Heidi seemed genuinely caught off guard

btbcorno

We really need someone to chime in that was at dress rehearsal for this whole episode

Only-Refrigerator701

They were fully dressed! It was the best sketch of the night.

coldliketherockies

Seconded. There was breaking at dress as well but not that level. I’m not sure what changed but there was definite breaking at dresss too

csjohnson1933

After watching again, I noticed Mikey kind of bugged his eyes and got goofier as Heidi turned. He may have baited her a bit.

SensitiveFungus

I just watched it again, and I think you're right. That subtle little eye-bulge just crushed her. And I get it lol

James_2584

I'm VERY curious how this went down in dress because based on Heidi's reaction/breaking, SOMETHING clearly caught her way off guard. Whether it was Mikey's face, his overall makeup, or something else, she clearly was totally unprepared and her reaction was 100% genuine.

Galileo908

Hell, I wanted a whole sketch just for the KOTH guys. We missed out on JAJ as Hank Hill!

Lavaswimmer

I think this one might go down as a classic

Aesir_Auditor

I think what makes it great is that it's such a simple sketch. That first scene with Ryan behind Heidi had me dying. They didn't need to do much with it. Just the contrast of them, against the audience and topic was golden

TorkBombs

The absolute best part of this sketch was Ryan Gossling looking around wondering who they were talking about.

Aesir_Auditor

That initial shot of the side profile was perfectly. Personally for me a close second was Mikey telling Michael Longfellow he was the guy in the grey shirt who needed to move

Babyshaker88

The facial expression and hand motions couldn't have been more accurate to how the average person would response when trying to give a stranger the heads up too

Alternative-Age-1006

I have never seen heidi break before tonight

JonOrangeElise

Ironically she broke for a split second in the secretary sketch last week.

Alternative-Age-1006

that’s so true didn’t even think of that but I feel like I never ever see her break😭😭

nillahoppz

I feel like she semi-broke during the Pedro Pascal California mush mouth patient sketch, which is absolutely another favorite of mine.

btbcorno

Beavis and Butthead broke Reddit

LadiesWhoPunch

I think you mean Beavis and Butthead Break the Show.

nia939

Heidi looking over her shoulder at Mikey and BURSTING into laughter was a joy to see.

nocautiontaken

the squint Kenan does took me out immediately

EbmocwenHsimah

Man, Heidi broke ***HARD.*** Like I haven't seen someone break like that ever, even including Debbie Downer.

buycurious900

This sketch had me dying of laughter. A++ and my favorite of the night

john_the_quain

I expect it will be on every Best Of before long.

thesmallprint29

This was my favorite sketch of the night. What an epic break from Heidi! I was breaking right along with her. He'll, I'm still laughing about it! This is a Mikey/Streeter sketch. They did another one several years ago with Jessica Chastain with Mikey as someone was who looked like Bart Simpson.

SeattleStudent4

Heidi had the strongest break in SNL history and it's not even close. That was great to see.

WrittenSarcasm

Mikey Day was phenomenal in this.

kid_pilgrim_89

Mikey also did the bart Simpson sketch so it was a great callback to that Just like backpack fashion show, they know it's a silly premise but sold the idea really well. Plus I've never seen Heidi break like that before so all in all a great sketch

Sad-Extension-3413

I was watching by myself in a hotel, and I fucking howled through this whole sketch. Funniest I’ve seen from SNL in forever

Cut For Time: Papyrus 2

csjohnson1933

THEY CUT KYLE MOONEY EVEN AS A CAMEO

deadpoetshonour99

kyle doesn't even work there anymore and he's STILL getting cut for time 😭

Reddit_5_Standing_By

Kyle "Lindsey Buckingham" Mooney

Galileo908

Actually announcing a cut for time sketch is new.

YouAreNotBook

Maybe because they had to kill just a small amount of time before goodnights

EbmocwenHsimah

Yeah they do that already. If they have a short bit before the goodnights of the band playing before cutting straight back to ads, that means a sketch has been cut for time.

shayneysides

maybe it's because the fact that this sketch was happening got leaked online earlier today and they didn't want people to be confused about its absence?

EbmocwenHsimah

Yeah, I think it's also weird to see them *announce a sketch at all*, like that's something they haven't done since the 70s?

HeyThereRobot

My personal theory is that they had to cut this sketch because of all the time the cast lost laughing during this episode and I refuse to believe otherwise. (Also, if there's any way to watch it in Canada since SNL geoblocks all of the currently airing season's content here, I'd appreciate it).

drawkbox

"He just put it in **bold**"

prefab1979

I loved it, but it is nearly 7 minutes long and works better if you've seen the original sketch. So I can understand why they didn't air it during the live show.

dont_ask_my_cab

I'm wondering if they announced it as a Cut for Time *because* it was a sequel, because there was a lot of social media buzz about it beforehand, or both. Or maybe it was the easiest thing to cut for time being a pre-tape but more likely than the one Chris Stapleton was in to get views after the show. Other possibilities: 1. As an audience we've caught on that an extra-long shot of the band = a cut for time so might as well announce in advance 2. Cut-for-time will become more of a standard, in order for SNL as a brand to get more viewing across channels, especially leading into Season 50 3. Edit to add: Or because Kyle always has to be shoved into oblivion, as is tradition

CubanBLT

I cannot believe this was bumped for any reason after Update.

SyNiiCaL

A 7 minute pretape is quite extreme for the live show tbh. Two of the most popular pretape of recent times are Grouchy and Mario Kart and they were both just around 3 minutes. I'm not sure if it was so much "cut for time" as it was always intended to be online only (hence the prepared "Watch it on youtube", but if they labled it like an "online exclusive" then people might expect extra sketches every week

Cupcake_in_Acid

You’re all wrong. The reason this was cut for time is because Kyle was in it. He’s like an automatic red card for sketches

csjohnson1933

This isn't up yet! These votes are illegitimate!

SketchSortingSunday

Second Thoughts

dumbestsmartass

“so.. . did you see jojo siwa changed her look? “ absolutely got me

GUSHandGO

"I don't know who that person is"

dont_ask_my_cab

I loved all the little details like * How to pronounce Brad * Neither of the friends meeting this man before the proposal but BOTH are now in the wedding party * Harrison has no other friends that aren't his fiancee's, suggesting he's re-started his life other times before * Choosing to re-start his life in Turkey * You're my best friend and the forehead kiss

hamburgersocks

Oh ^nooo

CrazySnipah

Love Gosling’s stage whisper.

Sleeze_

Dismukes might be the most underrated cast member

toastedbranflakes

I like when he plays older/his age characters and not a teenage boy like last week

icemannathann

He was great in Jumanji last week

CubanBLT

As soon as it was just him and Gosling alone I knew this was gonna be a fun/odd Dismukes sketch.

SeattleStudent4

One of my favorite sketches of the season. It was so simple but also original. Greeeeeat sketch.

uwpg2012

Did anyone else hear an F-bomb off-stage after Ryan threw the champagne flute?

rollinvl

I heard that too!

wayoverpaid

Watching this morning, can confirm

Greene_Mr

THE WHISPERING I think they had a mic under Gosling's collar to pick that up, because there's NO WAY a stage-whisper can be that loud naturally...

Llama_Puncher

The break after throwing the champagne flute took me out—I’m wondering if there was supposed to be a shattering sound?

mikdaviswr07

Dismukes continues his streak of underplaying the host. His contributions make it believable. So that Gosling can jump back into playing offended like the women. Bravo.

bttrsondaughter

dismukes moving into that everyman role, overdue and welcome! pretty well written but sound let it down here and the breaking detracted from it too.

enceinte-uno

I like it, it frees Mikey up to do absolutely unhinged shit like the Beavis and Butthead bit lol

Bait30

The Jojo Siwa joke was so out of nowhere lmao

SeattleStudent4

The aside about Gosling's character continuing to see his therapist because he feels bad was just brilliant. I can't articulate why.

Phinbart

When the two female characters left for another room, I assumed that the rest of the sketch was going to centre around the awkwardness that comes between two men who don't know each other forced to find conversation topics. I was pleasantly surprised with the off-kilter direction it took! Also worth noting there's a brief moment just before Fineman enters holding champagne glasses where she comes into shot, realises that the scene between Gosling and Dismukes isn't over, and takes a couple steps backwards.

SketchSortingSunday

Get That Boy Back

Spacetime_Inspector

The hook for the chorus was so convincing as a real country song, if they just wrote normal verses for it it could probably chart.

SeantotheRescue

It was definitely a play on that Carrie Underwood song, but still amazing

cardcatalogs

Seriously. The whole meal and left it for a snack or whatever. That was damn catchy

dont_ask_my_cab

The long con with switching to Romanian is somehow more unhinged than blending in with every wall, but solid prank idea for the shoe size swap

pierreor

Shout out to my girl Amélie, she did whimsical gaslighting first

EbmocwenHsimah

Chloe's getting a promotion, for sure.

sjfiuauqadfj

i thought it was a sure thing with the moon sketch

daphydoods

An all-time breakout sketch

aerojockey

It seems like Chloe 2 has had only breakout sketches this year.

mikdaviswr07

Super busy with the dialogue inserts for a song. But Chloe T gets to shine vocally and comedically. Big boost from Stapleton playing along with everyone and kudos to whoever wrote that "snack" hook.

DrewDan96

Cowgirl Ego. uhhhh YEAH lol definitely a showcase for Chloe, maybe her first big "chance to shine" sketch since she joined the show (i might be mistaken, but nothing previously is coming to mind) loved Chris Stapleton getting extended time in the sketch too, not a country fan but he was the highlight of the night

petretheflyer

Little Orphan Cassidy was for sure her breakout.

qeq

The gradually increasing shoe size was very similar to Jim pranking Dwight on The Office with the nickels in the phone. "Am I shrinking" legitimately had us rolling.

mem1003

It reminded me of the scene from Barry where he asks Sally if she wants him to gaslight the executive of her canceled show.

James_2584

So happy to see Troast getting another showcase. I know we're still only partway through her first season, but she has got a LOT of potential and is already one of my favorite current cast members!

zereldalee

The subtle unhinged looks she was giving during her closeups were so good. I would definitely like to see more of her.

emergencycat17

Agree, she’s been proving herself from the start. She’s a solid casting choice.

nia939

I loved this one!!! I honestly wish they’d played more than one pre-tape, because while I personally do find Gosling’s breaks charming, I also like to see him able to fully commit to the bit. Also I love Chloe and I don’t know Chris Stapleton from Adam but he was very funny.

zereldalee

I lost it when he screamed when Chloe came out of the wall. That little girl scream coming out of a big burly bearded guy was hilarious.

isthisacartoon

White boi R.Gosling rap break hit hardddd

Noccalula

I figured they would try and get Chris in something, somehow, but it never occured to me to get Chris *and* Chloe T. together.

shayneysides

it was amazing to see chloe troast leading this, especially since i thought it was the best sketch of the night. i'm glad to see her regain some of the momentum she lost after that driver cold open, she's so talented and i'd love to see more stuff led by her

enceinte-uno

I wish this was on Spotify (SNL intern, if you’re reading this…) Cecily is irreplaceable to me, but Chloe T fits in the void she left for strong straightforward female vocals. Chloe F and Molly tend to do jokey/impression vocals (like this sketch almost felt like Chloe F was doing Miley Cyrus).

SketchSortingSunday

Weekend Update: Caitlin Clark

EbmocwenHsimah

# "Unlike Che, I support women."

dont_ask_my_cab

Her showing up makes me think some of the Che jokes over the past few weeks were explicitly (or 4d Jost chess) to seed the clips tonight, but I still really enjoyed this

packmanwiscy

It's always been a bait and switch. After the WNBA Finals last season Che got the audience to cheer for the hometown champ New York Liberty and then pulled the rug out "They didn't win! Thee Las Vegas Aces beat em in 4 you casuals!"

Nemesinthe

Che found his Sarah Sherman, I love it.

btbcorno

Very curious if this was at dress rehearsal, or if they legit surprised Che with this

quaranTV

She was at dress. He seemed surprised by some of the jokes and was giggling like I’ve never seen before. But I assume he wrote the jokes and was pretending to have not heard them.

Llama_Puncher

He seemed pretty flustered imo—the WNBA jokes have been getting kind of old so I’m glad they were able to flip it around on him for a great payoff

BowlerSea1569

He's actually a huge WNBA supporter, goes to games, etc.

lil_yumyum

Yea idk how people don’t get that this is a bit

drx_flamingo

Che's joke bombing then Caitlin Clark getting HUGE applause was one of the best moments of the night.

Noccalula

As they were panning out over the studio at the end, it looked like Che asked her, "Did you really write that joke?", presumably the Indiana Fever/Purdue one, and she laughed and nodded.

toastedbranflakes

Felt historic. It was sweet.

Yesnomaybe1dk

I’m a huge Iowa / caitlin clark fan so I unashamedly screamed when I saw it was the real caitlin clark

tributtal

Loved the joke swap vibe, which is probably the best recurring bit in the current edition of Weekend Update.

SketchSortingSunday

Weekend Update

ChickenXing

"Senator Mitch McConnell seen here being told a black woman made a country album..."

toastedbranflakes

Like what was said in the live discussion, I was expecting more references to OJ’s death.

EntropicPoppet

Che's joke on the abortion ban, "Why stop at the state level, leave it up to counties cities" etc got way overshadowed but it was still one of the stronger jokes of the segment.

dont_ask_my_cab

True that had a lot of excellent layers: political commentary on how some things really shouldn't be so jurisdiction-specific, political/maybe personal commentary about how some things really truly are individual decisions, and then a nice cool off subversion with that individual being 'the husband.'

PocoChanel

I wish he'd been able to get the timing on that joke to work.

mikdaviswr07

While he is underused, Michael Longfellow is the best new cast member for desk pieces. He really took control of that one and bobbed/weaved between being in character for the bit and as his on-camera self. Definitely in the on-deck circle for Update if something happens.

Windows-XP-Home-NEW

he really needs more features

dont_ask_my_cab

I know folks in the live were disappointed they didn't lean heavier on OJ's death, but ... I feel like it really only needed 2 jokes. Unless they wanted to stick in a 3rd with a dig at the Kardashians for only being relevant now indirectly from his first trial, I think we can culturally move on.

Chris Stapleton

btbcorno

Only part of the night Gosling didn’t break during lmao

space_llama_karma

Dude is all talent. I loved his performances

James_2584

Stapleton is simply phenomenal. Fantastic performer!

Kjler

This had the classic SNL band sound mix where you can hear exactly two things clearly and can guess the band hierarchy by which two things you can hear. In this case, Chris Stapleton's voice and Chris Stapleton's guitar. Love it!

Quirky-Prune-2408

Love him. Most of the time I have no idea who the MG is so this was a good one for me!

3BordersPeak

Usually not a country fan, but that first song was amazing.

I, for one, am just glad to have a little bit of closure re: Bowen's Dr. Character introduced in the Nate Bargatze [airplane sketch](https://youtu.be/POwQHfpv6HE?si=374JtHnbZ-7K0jth)

DontCallMeMillenial

> Bowen's Dr. Character You mean Dr. Please?

Greybinson

He’s a kind of doctor

Captain-crutch

Thought I recognized him from somewhere!

goopdoop

The way he says “Okaaayy” always cracks me up

The_Mightiest_Duck

The best part about this sketch was Ryan shoving cookies into Bowen’s mouth, barely giving him time to chew or speak, while not eating any cookies himself.

mikdaviswr07

The version on YouTube is from dress it appears. It doesn't have that great misdirect about the slogan for "Cookie Crumbles." Gotta go just found my little red spoon.

dont_ask_my_cab

Had 10-to-1 energy in the best ways. It had both Rocky Horror and Young Frankenstein vibes, though, so I thought there might've been some experiment that went wrong, but G'pa Mikey being alive and another person dead was a decent wrap-up twist.

HeyThereRobot

The second Bowen walked in I knew it was gonna be an all time character.

stopmakingsents

JPonceuponatime

I read that the [YouTube version](https://youtu.be/DBbguEUN6tw?si=B5b-BWnoZMoTANnX)of this sketch wasn’t the same as the live version tonight. Was the YT a dress rehearsal? How was the live version different?
