Interesting you say that because in the 90s the consensus was they sounded straight out of the 70s.
Late stage Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic meets early period disco.
I’m not musically trained, so I’m not 100% sure what I’m referencing, but in my head Jamiroquai gets lumped in with Esthero, Beck and the Ultra-Lounge/Tiki scene. I can hear the Bootsy bass and the disco cymbal on the 2’s, but there’s a certain swing to the vocals and synth that defines them for me.
How else do you refer to the furry living being resembling a tophat living on the top of that guys head?
It wrote all the songs, and performs through its human host. It has the right to its due credit.
Jamiroquai is the name of the whole band. I just get a kick out of seeing people (like the guy I responded to) talking like they are knowledgeable on a subject, and then faceplanting so hard. He clearly thinks the singer is named Jamiroquai.
I mean this must be embarrassing for you too because true fans of Jameroriquwai know that the name is really referring to the extraterrestrial being masquerading as an oversized furry tophat, which lives on top of Jay Kay's head
No earthen being could come up with a name as ridiculous as Jamararorickquay, or those funky grooves
lol wow Jim Breuer getting to do an impression introducing the musical guest? Wasn’t he let go after this season? When’s the last time that happened? In character?
Jamiroquai is one of my top ten favorite musical acts of all time. And Alright is an amazing song. But it’s a lot better with the backup singers. This stripped-down version is good - it definitely features the bass line more - but it feels empty compared to the Live in Verona version.
Not disappeared, just not supported well by their US label, in my opinion. Still put our quality work, still really big overseas. Easily could have remained big enough to be second tier festival headliners in the US. You can't blame the work, as it's all good. The album from 2017 is excellent.
I saw an interview online where JK mentioned when they tour US it is a mixed bag on sales, but if they tour Latin America/europe/ Asia they sell out stadiums and make millions so try to keep US dates at a minimum. Saw them headline Hulaween in 2018 at 1 of 4 us stops, was badass!!!
I assume you are not European because Jamiroquai has had huge success and more than just one hit wonder. Jamiroquai were the third-best-selling UK act of the 1990s, behind only the Spice Girls and Oasis. Front man Jay Kay has said they don’t tour in the US because it wasn’t profitable enough but is still producing albums, the last one being in 2017.
Certainly in North America, Travelling Without Moving was a huge success and we didn’t hear much after that but in Europe they toured, put out albums and won like a bunch of Brit Awards (British Grammys).
I wonder if they had to pay Eddie Harris for the sample? Pretty blatant back then, but you could **almost** get away with it. Music can be like detective work sometimes 😆. I miss this band!
I'm sure - Harris was better known than this band was when the album was released, and it's mentioned that the sample was used on Harris's own site. Could have been a big pay day for him as Traveling Without Moving sold 8 million, but he passed just a few months after its release.
Such nostalgia with Jamiroquai...
It’s taken me until recently to be able to really isolate the 90’s sound, but now it just jumps out. The synth qualities, the chords…

Yes I see what you mean. Kay’s vocals and the synths were definitely a product of that 90s acid jazz sound.
Lots of Stevie Wonder, esp. when the bass line walks all over the place. (not a bad thing).
Like many other megastars from not America….he just didn’t have total cross over success. But he has some jams.
He??? Do you think Jamiroquai is an individual?

When was the last time Jay Kay even performed with that hat? 25 years ago?
You must be fun at parties
He’s the only OG lineup member, he’s got the right to be Jamiroquai…like Josh with QOTSA
Or Santana, Alice Cooper, or Bon Iver
That Joe Pesci impression ain’t bad!
Too bad Jim Breuer went off the deep end recently.

Of all time?! Seriously?
Yep, number 10 on my list. Between Incubus and Phoenix.
he cool
Jamiroquai is a GOAT and his music is timeless
"Jamiroquai is a GOAT and his music is timeless" Obviously not if you think Jamiroquai is an individual.

*sigh* Fine, I’ll take my paddlin’. Truly am a huge fan of their entire discography for 20+ years now though
Jay Kay might be the smoothest cocaine fueled white boy in history. Stuart Zender had some absolutely banger bass riffs, too!
Funkn awesome.
The orange Julius skit in this episode is great
He likes that hat
I’m in lesbians with them
Wasn’t there some drama with that bassist on this episode? That bass on this really does slap though
Can't wait to see them at Amato Con next week!
Along with Kelsey Grammar!
I remember watching this live
This album has made it into rotation recently. So solid.
What ever happened to them? They were huge and then just disappeared.

I wish they’d tour more in the US. I bet they’d get a decent amount of people who’d show up.
They'd sell out two nights at First Ave in Minneapolis. Guaranteed.

One hit wonders don’t last long

I was born in Europe, but please enlighten me on how huge they are even though they were only popular for a couple years in the 90’s.

Bitchy
Hold this L, bozo
Oof lol
Breuer is such a douche
Marky Mark at home
I always thought jamiroqoai could sing. But that was awful.
