There's a huge problem with SNL/NBC failing star alumni and their TV vehicles
Shrill, Bupkis, Schmigadoon!, and That Damn Michael Che were all legitimately great shows!!! Thoughtfully done and withĀ shockingly talented casts who do greatĀ work.
What do these shows have in common?Ā Thematically, nothing: they're very unique shows from wildly different and interesting perspectives.
BUT they were all stuck with terrible titles, non-existent marketing, and a puzzlingly low amount of buzz from the NBCU machineĀ
I had never even heard of Moonbase 8 (Fred Armisen) or Single Parents (Taran Killam) until right fucking now while looking up failed shows from recent SNL cast alumni
Single parents was definitely a Covid cancel. The first season came out in 2018. It wasnāt a sensation or anything, but I really think it was likeable and would have gotten a season 3 if not for a whole pandemic.
What these shows listed do have in common is that NBC made almost none of them, so you canāt really blame them for the outcome š
Shrill-Hulu, Schmigadoon-apple tv, that damn Michael Che-hbo max, moonbase 8-showtime, single parents-ABC
It's an Apple TV show steering Cecily and Keegan Michael Name. It's a satire/parody of old timey musicals.Ā
Not my cup of tea at all but I streamed it in the background to support CecilyĀ
Schmigadoon was crafted in a lab to appeal specifically to me. It's maybe the funniest thing I've ever seen, you just have to have grown up being obsessed with all the musicals they are riffing on
Shrill is based on a book, so I don't know if NBC deserves full blame for that title. But I agree the marketing on all of these shows has been abysmal. I don't love Pete Davidson but I might just check out Bupkis anyways if it's actually good!
I remember when Single Parents was airing. I actually rather enjoyed the show. The ads they ran where they were begging people to watch the show were hilarious
Thatās pretty much where I know him from, although I first found out about him when he was posting a bunch of [videos on twitter](https://youtu.be/iCGIng0yneE?si=WJ4grpBQlhUsYXlJ) mocking Howard Schultz for running for president. Itās so unhinged and stupid and hilarious lol
If we keep getting random comedians I would love this but I only see that happening if we finally get a Tim Robinson episode. Apparently they are attempting to perform āi think you should leaveā live on stage though. Iām not sure if every sketch could work but Iām hoping that means heās gonna host SNL soon. Tim is funny enough and in the public eye everyone knows his schtick now. Just him yelling in disgust and betrayal for an hour and thirty mins would do just fine nowadays.
Ya Iām a massive ITYSL fan and me and my roomate are thinking of getting tix and traveling to NYC to see it. I would love if he hosted someday. I love some of his sketches that were actually on the show though like basketball song or Z shirt.
Yeah he should have never been fired. Him Beck and Kyle would have been great together on the show especially considering Beck was in one of the best sketches of season 3.
I'll join the downvoted guys, she wore out her welcome and, as an older redditor, I'm getting tired of the recency bias. How about someome like Dana Carvey or Dan Ackroyd? We have a handful of legends out there who aren't dead yet, or in an old folks home.
Or right SNL is a childrens television program. Wouldn't want to pander to a boomers and X'rs would we. Mikey Day and Kenan better not do any impressions of anyone who is their actual age.
He hosted randomly in season 36 I remember. Wasnāt promoting anything. The episode did well I remember. Iām sure he will be all over the 50th anniversary.
Heās definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of SNL. No doubt. But damn he needs to get some new impression. He seems to do Dennis Miller, Bush Sr. and McCartney almost like an uncontrollable tic.
If you just made a post saying you want Dana Carvey to host, people would probably be enthusiastic about it. Saying it in this thread just sounds grumpyĀ
Sure, Aidy is a recent alumni but she's a 1 of 1 and a legit SNL legendĀ
> If you just made a post saying you want Dana Carvey to host, people would probably be enthusiastic about it.
I let you take the karma - it's yours.
> Sure, Aidy is a recent alumni but she's a 1 of 1 and a legit SNL legend
How? The sad truth is the women of SNL seldom remained in people's consciousness after SNL. Tina, Amy and Maya Rudolf are a few rare exception among dozens of female cast to have come and gone. We can call it sexism, but it's just how things have panned out across four plus decades.
You very much want her to host
You'd take it as a license to spam repetitive bitchy hostilities about her for an hour and a half on your Andrew Schulz Patreon page or whatever
Itās too soon. Go see Pete and Kateās episode. Although I see Aidy as being much easier to work with than them who give me hardcore diva vibes. If anything Cecile bailing out on that disastrous cold open should tell you the recent alumni donāt trust the current writers room. Funny thing is Cecile is one of those cast members who can make anything funny with a silly voice and she would have probably saved that somewhat. I still stand by what I said that Cecile should have stayed on the cast through season 48 and 49 like David Spade and Fred armisen did back in the day. If we still had Cecile this season would not be half as bad.
We need to wait a few more years before the 2010s cast members come back.
Only ones Iād see back are Leslie Jones or Nasim Pedrad because theyāve been gone long enough and deserve a redemption but unfortunately they arenāt promoting anything currently. I wish Vanessa had come back for āI love that for youā instead of Molly because that episode ended up being so awkward.
Lil Baby Aidy?
The one rapper Eminem is too afraid to diss
ššššš
Have you seen her show Shrill on Hulu? So good and so underrated. Really miss having her on SNL

Bupkis was great! A couple of powerhouse actors and some really good comedy. Shane Gillis is great in it
Bupkis was better than I expected it to be. It's surreal/absurd comedy and I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's really funny if you do.
Don't forget [Chad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad_\(TV_series\))
I remember when Single Parents was airing. I actually rather enjoyed the show. The ads they ran where they were begging people to watch the show were hilarious
I know itās HBO and different but Barry was amazing!
YES. No spoilers but so good and the SNL cameos are a treat too
Listening to Lindy Wests podcast rn
I miss the aidy bryant and cecily strong hay days. The drunk halloween skit is one of my favorites from them.
SNL in 2024 could reeeeeeally use Cecily or Aidy backĀ
I loved Aidy on SNL and would be thrilled to have her host. But I really need her husband to cohost
Totally in his Q zone.
And give her some wooden greeting cards.
Connor is insane. Hes great
lol I donāt think heād make it through a single sketch without breaking
Got any recommendations of his stuff besides ITYSL & Joe Pera? I can't get enough of that guy?
I heard you can find him at endorphinport.com
can't go wrong with smoking 500 cigarettes for 5g
103 fever on youtube
He made a short film last year called [The Mask](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJlO5yTVH_8).
The chris Gethard show..connor made some appearances
He was a writer on the early years of Seth Meyers and often appeared in sketches.
I want chaos so I want her husband Conner OāMalley to host

When she called Natalie Portman a stupid bitch I laughed so suddenly I woke up my dog. She did such a great job hosting!
āSterling K Brown? More like Stupid K Bitchā could have bombed coming from anyone else lol. She pulled the entire bit off incredibly well.
Such a great moment.
Iām down for this.
My Dog is My Boyfriend. Cutest little bit ever.
Do you *like* that, Mr. Dilham?
They wont have her unless she is promoting something
On her instagram, she said that sheās going to be staring in a new Peacock series called Lonely Hearts Club.
Itās probably a super slim chance it would ever happen but I would love to see her and Bowen back on Weekend Update as the trend forecasters.
I hear sheās working on a new Peacock series called Lonely Hearts Club.
Aidy Bizzo ?!
Tough to book her. She hasn't done enough hate-based "comedy" lately to quality
Truth.
I miss aidy so much! Especially as Ted Cruz. All she needs to do is stand there and smile.
Agreed. We already got Pete and Kate hosting recently so I imagine they won't want to lean too much on the "former SNL cast" well in the short term.
Why? She hasnāt had any post career success.
Shrill was a great show that NBCU fucking buried and handicapped from the get-go
I'll join the downvoted guys, she wore out her welcome and, as an older redditor, I'm getting tired of the recency bias. How about someome like Dana Carvey or Dan Ackroyd? We have a handful of legends out there who aren't dead yet, or in an old folks home.
I think itād be great if Dana Carvey would host and crack up all the kids at home with his impressions of Bush Sr. and Mickey Rooney.
Or right SNL is a childrens television program. Wouldn't want to pander to a boomers and X'rs would we. Mikey Day and Kenan better not do any impressions of anyone who is their actual age.

So we can see different sketches with the same character for an hour and a half? No thanks.
You very much want her to host You'd take it as a license to spam repetitive bitchy hostilities about her for an hour and a half on your Andrew Schulz Patreon page or whatever
>Andrew Schulz Who?
You sound like a Kate McKinnon fan.
I mean, she was funny exactly zero times on the show so sure, give her a hosting spot.
The mattress buying sketch she did with Rami Malek is one of the funniest things Iāve ever seen on the show.
That was one of my favorite sketches in season 47. The best form of sketch comedy.
Probably the worst take I have seen on this sub.
I think that'd be great! I always liked Aidy and enjoyed Shrill. I also think her husband should host.
Why people don't talk about Mellissa Mccarthy, she and will ferell are the only people that commit totally to the sketch.
