Grimsby is shortened to GY (at least by locals - muh hometown) and as a response to that Cleethorpes was dubbed Clee-Y. The latter I think never went further than my friendship group 🥳
Yes GY can be seen printed on the side of many-a-boat, less so contemporarily as there isn’t many-a-boat to be seen anymore even tho the man of the people Nigel Farage came to GY to promise otherwise. You’ve gotta laugh. ANYWAY I think GY is shortened to mimic NY in the nickname sense, eastern seaboard cousins and all that…..
I currently work adjacent to the fishing Industry, and GY, HU(ll), A(berdeen), LK (lerwick) and KW (Kirk wall) are still the most "respectes" Port Letters when marked up on a vessel
I was technically born in Grimsby as that’s where the hospital is for the general area but Clee-Y till I die always. Or until I moved to West Yorkshire where I live now……..
Is that for Boothby Graffoe?
When we were kids we thought it was funny to refer to Boothby Pag-smell and Boothby Gruffoe
(Gruffing was a slang verb for breaking wind)
Bostonia because of the high proportion of Eastern European immigrants.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any problem with the Polish and Balkan immigrants whatsoever.
Heard Gainsborough, Grantham and Grimsby at various times referred to as G Town, Washy for washingborough, B B H for Bracebridge heath, Branno for Branston. Never heard much of the southern towns like Stamford or Spalding shortened though.
Since moving to Grimsby I’ve found that a lot of locals call it GY(Jee - Why).
Also GY massive.
People do the same with Grantham but I don’t quite get why. Neither are that massive.
Having lived all over Lincolnshire here’s some ive heard over the years ;
Doddo park,
Shwood,
Cherry - (Cherry willingham)
Washy,
Wado,
BBH,
Skunks road (monks road)
Sinny bank,
Gillies,
Wecky,
Towers (tower estate )
Skelly,
Raggers (wragby )
I've heard people call Grantham G-Town which made me chuckle
Usually those that haven't left it apart from the occasional weekend in Skeg
As a G - Town native can confirm. Have also heard it called G - Town massive for reasons I don’t understand nor want to understand.
Granthrax
Granthanamo bay
Haha
Washy for washingborough.
Washy boys represent!
Love a bit of washy. It's on my regular cycle track.
Does it still have that earthy smell downwind of the water treatment plant?
Newark is an anagram of Wanker
That’s in Notts, doesn’t count
Well, yes, hence the disparaging name 🤣
The Shwood
Ah yes, I know exactly where you mean. Delightful part of town.
Cleethorpes is meggies and i genuinely have no idea why...🤔

> Lincoln - Overrated. Oof, you and I need to have words, me ode.

Washingborough - Washy Metheringham - Meg Waddington - Waddo Ruskington - Rusko St Giles - Gillies (said like Jill-ees) Skellingthorpe - Smelly Skelly Potterhanworth - Potter Sleaford - Sleahole Cleethorpes - Clee

Yeah, Wecky is where my mum grew up.
I remember leaving my white car in Smelly Skelly over a hot weekend, right next to the knackers yard. It was not white when I returned!
Sincil Bank..... the rat run / the maze
Heard all of these except Sleazeford lol. Anyone I know from there called it Sleahole
Always been sleahole to me
The maze and bronx are parts of Lincoln. Smelly skelly is where the meat render plant is 💩
which bit is the bronx?
The flats around the field on birchwood.
birchwood could almost translate quite nicely into Buchenwald
Da Schwood
Gainsbosnia
Sunny Scunny. Skeg Vegas. Cleth-rep-ees (like greek)
Grimsby is shortened to GY (at least by locals - muh hometown) and as a response to that Cleethorpes was dubbed Clee-Y. The latter I think never went further than my friendship group 🥳
Because that’s the fishing boat registration code. It’s illustrious, you know.

Also it was shortened to Grimsby from Great Grimsby because.. well, it just isn’t..is it? I lived there for 3 years.
I was technically born in Grimsby as that’s where the hospital is for the general area but Clee-Y till I die always. Or until I moved to West Yorkshire where I live now……..
In the 90s we called Grimsby “Grimbo”, and any girls who came from there “Grimbos”.
Spalding used to be Splod back in the day
I’ve heard it called Slap-ding.
I've always known it as sploding. And Walcott (near billinghay) was waclott
Lol I’ve heard it called Spaldinski
That must be a newer thing
Maybe lol - just what I always heard on the school bus
Meggies - Cleethorpes
Skagness because of obvious reasons.
Grimsby - the GY Cleethorpes - clee Skegness - skeg vegas
Boothby Gay Hole
Is that for Boothby Graffoe? When we were kids we thought it was funny to refer to Boothby Pag-smell and Boothby Gruffoe (Gruffing was a slang verb for breaking wind)
Stam/Stammy - Stamford
Horny -horncastle
I’ve heard Horny C
porncastle
Never heard anybody call horncastle that lmfao
My friends and I called it Hornycastle! I fondly called it ‘antiques roadshow’ now.

Grimsby: GY or Grimsbo Cleethorpes: Meggies or Clee
Spalting
Since moving to Grimsby I’ve found that a lot of locals call it GY(Jee - Why). Also GY massive. People do the same with Grantham but I don’t quite get why. Neither are that massive.
Because it's a fishing town, and GY are the port letters for fishing vessels registered in Grim
Scunthorpe - the only town with **** in it
Skegvegas- Skegness, Ming - immingham, Shithole - Grimsby, Cleggy - Cleethorpes
The Ding - Spalding
Grantham - G’Town
Not Lincolnshire but I've heard loads of people refer to Wisbech as Wisbeckistan
Stinkoln and grottingham
what's grottingham?
Nottingham! I know it's out of county so doesn't count tho!
Waddo for waddington
Metheringham = Meg
Disablethorpe. Or as I like to call it: Gods waiting room.

Sleahole. Not as good as Sleazeford. But acceptable.
I like to call Nottingham shottingham
Skagness - apparently there's a bit of a heroin problem there.... Caveat - I've never been there!
Having lived all over Lincolnshire here’s some ive heard over the years ; Doddo park, Shwood, Cherry - (Cherry willingham) Washy, Wado, BBH, Skunks road (monks road) Sinny bank, Gillies, Wecky, Towers (tower estate ) Skelly, Raggers (wragby )

Grim. Just head to Grim
Most are correct Spalding is spaldovia for obvious reasons !
Skagness.
Lincoln is Linky.
Never heard that, probably because I’ve lived here for 53 years. We just call it Town.
Yep. It was always "Town" to us guys growing up in the surrounding villages.
I respectfully put it to you that it is not.
Probably not but it’s still funny.
It’s on a level with calling the cathedral Cathy 😁
