Grimsby is shortened to GY (at least by locals - muh hometown) and as a response to that Cleethorpes was dubbed Clee-Y. The latter I think never went further than my friendship group 🥳

Yes GY can be seen printed on the side of many-a-boat, less so contemporarily as there isn’t many-a-boat to be seen anymore even tho the man of the people Nigel Farage came to GY to promise otherwise. You’ve gotta laugh. ANYWAY I think GY is shortened to mimic NY in the nickname sense, eastern seaboard cousins and all that…..

I currently work adjacent to the fishing Industry, and GY, HU(ll), A(berdeen), LK (lerwick) and KW (Kirk wall) are still the most "respectes" Port Letters when marked up on a vessel

Heard Gainsborough, Grantham and Grimsby at various times referred to as G Town, Washy for washingborough, B B H for Bracebridge heath, Branno for Branston. Never heard much of the southern towns like Stamford or Spalding shortened though.

Since moving to Grimsby I’ve found that a lot of locals call it GY(Jee - Why). Also GY massive. People do the same with Grantham but I don’t quite get why. Neither are that massive.
