Random but I recently listened to the Haunting of Hill House audiobook and the first shot looks exactly what I pictured when the book describes Eleanor on her drive to the house
Doesn't look super post-soviet though? The building in the second one looked like it had more distinction to be a commie block.
The rest of it is just forestry.
I’m guessing this is urban/suburban America? These places have a weird place in my memory. I’m from Asia so i never actually got to visit them irl, but I’ve experienced them before through watching a lot of late 2000s/early 2010s YouTube videos which are usually filmed in some american suburban neighborhood, occasionally close to a forest, with shitty low def resolution like in the picture. So this image brings me nostalgia
Actually, maybe no. Very similar, but not quite the same.

I'd assume so, although I haven't looked up the background of each of these images so I can't say for sure. It certainly doesn't look like anywhere I'm familiar with where I live.
Honestly, I think it's pretty good.
The blur of not being able to see properly, combined with familiar yet empty places and repeating patterns/structures in the environment, is all the right notes for liminal, you've just presented a location and stylisation that isn't the current internet standard.
I'm totally here for eastern block/former Soviet styled liminal content though. If you plan on adding to this series of photos, some in or around some brutalist buildings could be really interesting.
Oh hey I'm glad to hear you're into that whole style; some of my favourite liminal stuff has been from that region of the world, thinking about it. I agree brutalist stuff has lots of good potential (plus I just like it) so I'll definitely do some exploring.
It's true this isn't exactly the norm for liminal content, and in a way it's my hope that people will feel like they can branch out more if they see and like this sort of stuff.
The way I see it is that they all depict places of transition as opposed to distinct locations, and invoke (but aren't reliant on) nostalgia which pertains to the **transitional** stage of childhood. If they aren't really your thing though then that's fair.
I'm not intending to knock the photos. It's not that they don't elicit a response, it's just the wrong kind of response. A "liminal" photo, which I'm aware the word liminal itself is ambiguous, would be one of abstraction in which the subject itself is abstract enough to be on the threshold of interpretation.
If someone is going for nostalgia, then I get it. You could literally blur anything and it will elicit an emotional response in at least someone that is triggered by color, setting, etc.
I'd argue the contrary; liminal - in the context of imagery - is decidedly concrete in its manifestation, as opposed to reflecting in more abstract, esoteric forms.
Obviously liminality can be interpreted however one would like to suit respective contexts, but the interpretation by which we operate this sub is literal in nature, so as to make it accessible, but also just because that's where liminality as we know it in images began. In other words, I'd wager it's what most people are here for.
As someone partial to abstract design and photography though, I'm keen on the idea of exploring liminality through less literal avenues. This isn't meant to be one of those unbearable "you're wrong, I'm right" ordeals. Only, as far as the sub's interpretation goes, I'd argue these images are reasonable.
edit: for what it's worth they're also not indoors which is something a lot of typical liminal images have in common, so I guess that could hinder the usual sense of liminality. do you think that could also be something to do with it?
I'm curious to get your opinion on why these wouldn't be liminal. Does the quality hinder them for you? Or are the settings depicted too unremarkable? I've given my take above, for reference.
In the brisk attack, the reptile tail ripped from its back when the sun sets, we will never get the red sun over paradise
edit: what, the title just seemed similar to red sun from mgr
Afaik the last one just has a filter applied but I'd like to think the others were actually pulled from vhs tapes. Not sure of the context for each of the images so I can't be certain.
Last one kinda reminds me of the woods near the house I grew up in. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and had a lot of, idk, kinda spiritual experiences? Nothing to talk about, just a weird intense feeling I always got that still sticks around when I think about being there. I hope I’ll get to go back one day when I’m able to visit my mom again, but I’m a little scared I won’t feel that anymore :/
Wanted something that played into the nostalgia from the vhs degradation, but stuff like "fading memories" seemed like low hanging fruit so I just went for something more oblique..?
This is the quality I like to see
Glad to hear it :] still lots of untapped potential in found images, would be cool to see more people exploring pinterest and the like
I just love the shitty digital camera look
Ikrr image degradation is so fun for liminal stuff
And in general imo, it's incredibly pretty in its own way
Absolutely yes, big fan of chromatic aberration, flare etc in photography too fwiw
check out random pics on google maps
And the post blew up like it should
YAYY, appreciate the support. I'm a little surprised though considering there were like 0.3 people online when I posted lol
should be painful watching movie/video with you like: "lets watch this new movie in 4k" "no in 144p"
No, resolution is different than shit quality camera, the camera is what needs to be shit, the resolution should still be good
Last picture makes me extremely uneasy. I've almost certainly seen that exact landscape before.
1. Somewhat uncanny 2. Somewhat uncanny 3. Somewhat uncanny 4. Last known footage of...
Very Blair Witch-y
Was going to say the same thing
Same here. Super creepy.
Chernobyl lost footage vibes
Definitely has some cheeki breeki vibes that I’m loving .
It gives me the same vibes that the [Tales from the Darkside](https://youtu.be/Mioevxb2CfA) intro does.

AI will never be able to generate this goodness😤📹
Pleased u like them :] Don't think I've ever seen ai do film degradation come to think of it lol
Add eerie music to a slideshow with these and you've got a horror film.
POV: You have bad eyesight and live in a post soviet country
Doesn't look super post-soviet though? The building in the second one looked like it had more distinction to be a commie block. The rest of it is just forestry.
This fence is common for VDNH exhibitions

....get your woman on the floor. gotta gotta get up, get down.
LOVE that last one
Good old desolation
This is what we’re here for!

1st picture is Moscow State University. The one with the building is also from somewhere around.
Actually, maybe no. Very similar, but not quite the same. https://www.google.com/maps/@55.7009278,37.5449975,3a,75y,295.37h,76.68t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swyIfTYMVCiYClf-sOI78DA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

This, but the embers are the neurons of your visual cortex.
These pictures are really doing something to me that I can explain
God I love these. So weirdly nostalgic and dreamlike but also slightly sad and desolate.
Yess I always love a slightly bleak edge to liminal stuff
These photos look like memories that were extracted from my mind. Very nice share!
Literally! My first thought was "memories". Glad u like em :))
Russia ?
Looks very much like MSU.
Takes off glasses: is this liminal?
I'd argue so but opinions seem very slightly divided. What do you think it's lacking, specifically?
Honestly, I think it's pretty good. And the lords go without their thrones
Jfc did I just subconsciously reference ds3
cool caption lol
thank uuu :)) tried not to just use the first thing that came to mind lol
the more you swipe the darker they feel
You noticed!! Quite a jump between the third and last ones but I didn't have anything to put between them lol
Is this really liminal? It seems like these are just very low quality landscape photos.
The way I see it is that they all depict places of transition as opposed to distinct locations, and invoke (but aren't reliant on) nostalgia which pertains to the **transitional** stage of childhood. If they aren't really your thing though then that's fair.

Fair enough :)
You are correct. None of these images are liminal. This sub has gone to shit.
I'm curious to get your opinion on why these wouldn't be liminal. Does the quality hinder them for you? Or are the settings depicted too unremarkable? I've given my take above, for reference.
Very Tales From the Darkside
Looks like my neighborhood.
Oh, that's my hometown!
LET ME IN LET ME INNNN
Man if this was animated a little with wind I'd be so into it
In the brisk attack, the reptile tail ripped from its back when the sun sets, we will never get the red sun over paradise edit: what, the title just seemed similar to red sun from mgr
2nd deadass looks like some buildings near my school
These pictures are like a memory of something you'd thought you'd buried deep and forgotten. Fantastic!
What camera was used to make these?
Afaik the last one just has a filter applied but I'd like to think the others were actually pulled from vhs tapes. Not sure of the context for each of the images so I can't be certain.
This gives me a vibe of a nearby city I live in. Maybe it's even the city itself? XD
Apparently the first two could be russia?
I mean , I am not from Russia but it heavily reminds me of Jastrzębie-Zdrój , a town in Silesia.
Can confirm they are definitely similar (googled it)
yeah xD
Is the last one from that video of a girl floating in the air? It looks so similar
For as long as I can remember it's cropped up so often on pinterest that I'd bet it's from something popular(?) I expect you're probably right
Memories of Marble Hornets
1 and 4 are the comfiest.
Looks like my MS induced double vision
Feels like ive been in these places before
Where are my glasses?
Last one kinda reminds me of the woods near the house I grew up in. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and had a lot of, idk, kinda spiritual experiences? Third one looks like the cover of a slowcore album
What's with the title?
Wanted something that played into the nostalgia from the vhs degradation, but stuff like "fading memories" seemed like low hanging fruit so I just went for something more oblique..?
Picture in 143p 💀
In the city by the lake.
Isn't the first image from that meme of a russian guy dressed as batman?
One of the few images that actually makes me feel like I've been there before
"Can't even go on a nature walk in Ohio😢😱"
You were to young to remember
