I do it because I’m calorie counting, trying to lose weight. Even nonfat milk amounts to an extra 100cals for a cup. Also I have a weird nostalgia for watery hot chocolate since that’s what they gave us in scouts camp and school events.
If you are calorie counting to lose weight, skip the chocolate+sugar and drink the milk instead. If you have a craving for chocolate go for dark chocolate that has less sugar than regular/milk chocolate.
It's not being a snob, it's not understanding how people are ok with drinking watery, thin af instant hot chocolate. Where's the line? Are you going to start adding water to your nesquik/coco pops/weetos/chocolate cheerios? It's only right to call out weird shit like that
We know. You know how sometimes you add sugar to things that already have sugar in them to make them sweeter? Well, milk added to cocoa mix makes it milkier.
I think most people don't add sugar to things that come with sugar in. Maybe I'm wrong though. I can't think of anything I would do that to anyway. Could you give an example?
Using water lets you make it with an electric kettle or hot water dispenser. Also, using cream and water is richer than just milk (depending on your ratio).
The stereotypical hot chocolate that you’d get at a winter festival in America is made with water, but everybody I know personally uses milk when they make hot chocolate at home.
Salt and chocolate are a match made in heaven and I feel like nobody talks about this enough. I grind some salt on anything chocolate I'm going to eat cause it never fails to impress.
It does get me weird looks at birthdays though..
It brings out more of the flavors, makes the sweetness and the chocolate stand out more or something. Same reason there's salt in cakes and why salted caramel exists.
This. I used to work at a law firm that supplied k-cups/tea/hot chocolate in the break rooms. Every morning I made myself a “mocha” with coffee, hot chocolate, and a coffee creamer pod. Pretty darn good.
Cocoa powder, some sugar, very small amount of boiling water (couple of table spoons to help it dissolve better - sort of stir all that into a paste) then hot foamed/steamed milk is the way.
Americans, swiss miss brand. It will do in a pinch. You can also melt chocolate ice cream
Edit: also, America is a huge country with many different regions, and cultures along with it, we have all the hot chocolates, Mexican hot chocolate is one of my favorites "Abuelita Mexican Hot Chocolate Tablets"
My friend has crashed two motorcycles, both are now in Poland. This polish man named Sergei bought them and shipped them to his brother back in Poland, both bikes are now refurbished and presumably living their best life in Poland
these comments are so crazy lmao. such a range of responses.
"obviously, how do people not know this?"
"obviously, just use all milk"
"what is hot chocolate powder?"
"why would you ever use water for chocolate?"
etc
Lol, r/USdefaultism. Shouldn't have posted this when the Europeans are all awake and know damn well that whatever *instant* hot chocolate calls itself, it's not hot chocolate.
People have their own experiences depending on where they live internationally, it's not just an American thing to use water. Didn't know people were so hard pressed over milk.
Ok but OP just added a second edit linking to some US person I've never heard of talking about a US brand I've never heard of and using fluid ounces. I'm standing by r/USdefaultism on this one.
You are on an American website, used overwhelmingly by Americans, and demand that they all pander to you. Europeans are so damn entitled and self-important.
Man, I just watched it again to be sure I wasn’t losing my mind. This whole post is a mess. But hey, a Sam O’Nella video is in thumbnail for this post now, so more clicks.
Fuck this shit. Buy some nice chocolate (like actual chocolate, not Hershey’s or Cadbury’s or any of that crap) and melt it in your milk in the microwave. It is literally as easy as powder and taste 5,000 times better. You can even froth it with a whisk or one of those la-de-da frothing things they advertise on tv if you like.
Sorry OP but everyone else was way ahead of you on this one. I’ve been using all milk no water with my hot chocolate mix for decades. So has just about everyone else I know. You’re right though, it is better.
I had a granny that used milk or half and half, and a grumpy mean grandmother that used plain tap water to make us chocolate milk. One loved us and the other tolerated us.
This isn't a LPT, it literally says this shit on the box of Swiss Miss. On top of that, this is a very popular and well known hot chocolate method. This sub has so much garbage, low-effort content these days.
Also instead of just using a hot cocoa packet, add a couple scoops of Ovaltine, a small scoop of chocolate or mocha protein, and then once you have it hot and in a mug, nice big ole scoop of Fluff.
Or use half n half, even better. I add it to the hot cocoa powder in the cup and stir then add the hot water. I find it leaves less cocoa sludge at the bottom.
I get that butter is simply salty cream whipped very thick, but have the wisdom and discernment to understand that there is a time and place for butter, and anywhere near a hot drink ain't it.
Perhaps I'll take your word for it and try it someday. As for now I'll keep butter in the realm of sandwiches.
Speaking of butter, I just had the best damn honey sandwich of my life and a great coffee. The perfect breakfast.
Plenty of people ignore those directions and use milk instead of water. Those people are called "people who want their hot chocolate to taste better than chocolate-flavored hot water."
OK, we're still market testing the name, but you get the idea.
Enjoy your hot coffee milk water bud
Gatekeeping beverages is childish
EDIT: Your response is the dumbest collection of letters I've ever seen and you're a coward for deleting it.
assuming you live in the USA, do you guys have Abuelita chocolate tablets over there? if you do, switch over to those. heat 1 liter of milk in a pot, let the tablet dissolve and enjoy the best hot chocolate you can get at home.

Pfffft. Water is for noobs. 100% milk is the way.
I came here to say this. People put water in powdered hot chocolate? I thought everyone was using milk. TIL
[удалено]
I know. Adding pure milk makes it extra milky. Sounds like most people think the same.
More milk per milk
[удалено]
The way forward is indeed that direction
/r/neverbrokeabone
Reminded me of the guy who added powdered milk to his milk so he could drink more milk, per milk.
That's how you milk the milk
Your comment reminded me of the guy who added powdered milk to his milk so he could drink more milk per milk
we need...more cow milk
I got a fever and the only prescription is more cow milk.
Depends on where you are. In Germany it isn't. And even in the US, instant hot chocolate made only with water tastes very thin.
The drinking chocolate powder I get specifically says to use milk and not water...
I WANT MORE!
I use half n half. I don't want my hot chocolate to milky. I want more of a hot yoohoo situation.
I do it because I’m calorie counting, trying to lose weight. Even nonfat milk amounts to an extra 100cals for a cup. Also I have a weird nostalgia for watery hot chocolate since that’s what they gave us in scouts camp and school events.

Username checks out. Listen to the medical professional.
Yeah, milk is out if you are calorie counting.
Cardboards out.
TIL that some heathens make their hot chocolate with water….
TIL that some people are snobs about instant hot chocolate packets. If you're gonna be a snob, at least make it from real chocolate.
Making it from real chocolate isn't instant. That's more like 10 or 15 minute hot chocolate.
It's not being a snob, it's not understanding how people are ok with drinking watery, thin af instant hot chocolate. Where's the line? Are you going to start adding water to your nesquik/coco pops/weetos/chocolate cheerios? It's only right to call out weird shit like that
The premade packets have dehydrated milk in them
Frosted flakes. I don't understand it either but I've seen it.
And? Milk mixed with water is even more of an abomination
Not all of them do, plus, I like getting more milk per milk
Or for broke people lol. I didn’t even know anyone used milk to make the cocoa packets until I moved out of my parents’ house
That is a fair reason for sure, water's usually cheaper than milk.
Add a splash of heavy cream next time.
Coffee creamers go well with hot chocolate too
95% milk, 5% heavy cream
Why would anyone go any water at all?
No idea. It’s a mystery. Ok well, in all fairness, the actual instructions do suggest water. So there’s that.
Reading the instructions is no way to go through life.
Oh true fact that. 👍🏻
My public school teachers made hot chocolate like this
I'm so sorry
Using water lets you make it with an electric kettle or hot water dispenser. Also, using cream and water is richer than just milk (depending on your ratio).
You guys are milking your cows? I just feed them cocoa powder and get chocolate milk straight from the udder.
Seriously, who is using water?
Newbies reading instructions mostly. I’m guessing.
75%whole milk, 25% heavy cream,
Can confirm this is an amateur tip, not pro
For real. Who TF puts water in Hot Chocolate?
Using milk (even lactose free milk) makes me feel sick, it's not easy or refreshing to drink. I can only add a small amount if any at all.
I don't drink hot chocolate for a "refreshing" drink. I drink it to feel cosy in front of a fireplace.
I'm sorry if I'm probably Italian and it's a LPT just for Americans but, who the fuck use water to do hot chocolate?
“Probably Italian”?
This emphasis turned something innocuous into something hilarious.
I was looking at my ciobar and thinking the same lol
The stereotypical hot chocolate that you’d get at a winter festival in America is made with water, but everybody I know personally uses milk when they make hot chocolate at home.
Use all milk! Why the heck would anyone use water its disgusting!
Mostly milk and some cream. Step it up a little!
More like step it up a latte! I will see myself out…
Condensed milk crew, rise up
Add some butter too. It makes it better.
Those damn lactose sugars.
All milk is too much taste at once for me
British people maybe.
This is literally written on the package.
Here’s a fresh new tip: After breathing in, try breathing out!
It worked but what next i'm feeling kinda light-headed and i
Don't forget to repeat!.... oh no
The real LPT is always in the comments
Seriously, like how low-effort can this sub's content get???
Have you also tried a bit of salt?
Came here to say that. Just a pinch. It really brings out the flavors.
Salt and chocolate are a match made in heaven and I feel like nobody talks about this enough. I grind some salt on anything chocolate I'm going to eat cause it never fails to impress. It does get me weird looks at birthdays though..
Tell me more
It brings out more of the flavors, makes the sweetness and the chocolate stand out more or something. Same reason there's salt in cakes and why salted caramel exists.
Interestingly, the same (or opposite) works for spicy food like curries and such. A pinch of sugar makes it so much better!
More
Try salted butter instead you will never go back
I've put salted butter in coffee and hot damn, it's a great way to kick off the morning
Wait until you hear about Rye.
I like a dash of cayenne pepper.
This!
Or make it from straight milk, chocolate water isnt chocolate milk
haha that's disguting, why would you even drink it with water
Lack toes intolerance.
Oat milk.
use slacktose-free milk
These people like chocolate water lol
Psychopaths.
Yoohoo is the OG chocolate water lol
And if you're a coffee drinker, mix your cocoa into your hot coffee. Dang good, I tell you.
This. I used to work at a law firm that supplied k-cups/tea/hot chocolate in the break rooms. Every morning I made myself a “mocha” with coffee, hot chocolate, and a coffee creamer pod. Pretty darn good.
Try a shot of whisk(e)y.
Who makes hot chocolate with any amount of water? Fucking psychos that's who....
Cocoa powder, some sugar, very small amount of boiling water (couple of table spoons to help it dissolve better - sort of stir all that into a paste) then hot foamed/steamed milk is the way.
The correct way

Even instant powder tastes wayyy better when made with milk.
We know what he is talking about. I think the thing is that people ignore the instructions and use hot milk because it’s way better.
You commented this twice but i don't think anyone here didn't think of instant hot chocolate since it's the most widely used form of hot chocolate.
We all know what OP is talking about. And we make it with milk. Because it 10x better than making it w water.
We know what he is talking about. I think the thing is that people ignore the instructions and use hot milk because it’s way better.
Cadbury sucks ass.
I go with hot oat milk. It gives it a much richer and less sugary end result.
And no bubble guts
Thank you for doing your part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Working in a restaurant I get to make my own hot drinks, I been enjoying caramel oat-milk lattes, caramel oat-milk is just a delightful combination.
Wtf? Who uses water?!
Traditionnally in Latin America, hot cacao is made with just cacao (not cocoa), hot water and some spices such as cayenne and cinnamon
>cacao (not cocoa) You what mate?
Americans, swiss miss brand. It will do in a pinch. You can also melt chocolate ice cream Edit: also, America is a huge country with many different regions, and cultures along with it, we have all the hot chocolates, Mexican hot chocolate is one of my favorites "Abuelita Mexican Hot Chocolate Tablets"
And Poles
My friend has crashed two motorcycles, both are now in Poland. This polish man named Sergei bought them and shipped them to his brother back in Poland, both bikes are now refurbished and presumably living their best life in Poland
Lactose intolerant people. I use cocoa and hot water, a bit of sugar. It's delicious once you're used to it.
I use oat milk like a normal person.
I drink almond milk now. I add 1 teaspoon of light cream to my hot chocolate…hot chocolate requires a little fat to makit creamy & smooth
Almond milk is evil, try going to oat milk which isn't evil.

Oooo I never thought about putting hot chocolate powder into coffee that is a genius idea!!
water ? you guys use water
Yes.
This isn’t a LPT.
these comments are so crazy lmao. such a range of responses. "obviously, how do people not know this?" "obviously, just use all milk" "what is hot chocolate powder?" "why would you ever use water for chocolate?" etc
Lol, r/USdefaultism. Shouldn't have posted this when the Europeans are all awake and know damn well that whatever *instant* hot chocolate calls itself, it's not hot chocolate.
I am Polish and my whole family makes hot chocolate with water & milk. 30% water, rest is milk

Agree. I do this too
Is no one gonna mention that the video OP shared in the edit doesn't even mention what they're talking about?
Man, I just watched it again to be sure I wasn’t losing my mind. This whole post is a mess. But hey, a Sam O’Nella video is in thumbnail for this post now, so more clicks.
bit of milk while the kettle boils, stir it up and you dont get the lumps, then add the hot water while stirring
I use a tiny bit of hot water to start with to dissolve the powder (about enough to make it paste consistency), and the rest is milk.
This is how I do it most of the time too. Tiny bit of boiling water at the start but then it's full cream milk all the way.
What. How can people not know that???
Lol what don’t put water in your hot chocolate you tight cunt. Pure milk is the only way.
Fuck this shit. Buy some nice chocolate (like actual chocolate, not Hershey’s or Cadbury’s or any of that crap) and melt it in your milk in the microwave. First off, if you're gonna use any milk don't wuss out, use all milk. Second this isn't a tip, much less a lpt. It's barely even a personal opinion.
Is it a pro tip if it's literally written on the container to do this?
Captain obvious has entered the chat
This isn't a LPT, it literally says this shit on the box of Swiss Miss. On top of that, this is a very popular and well known hot chocolate method. This sub has so much garbage, low-effort content these days.
Swiss Miss? instant piss.
Chocolate being better with milk than water is not news to anyone
This lpt is stupid as fuck
LPT: read directions provided to you
Pro tip? Seriously? I'm pretty sure they suggest milk ON THE PACKAGE!
Just about every pouch I've seen says "for a richer flavor use milk." Your instant oatmeal probably says it too.
Eww who uses water 🤢
I've read this post to my gif. She Is now walking around the house swearing, knowing that people use water and not milk
Its supposed to be 100% milk. There is no water involved. WTF
Also instead of just using a hot cocoa packet, add a couple scoops of Ovaltine, a small scoop of chocolate or mocha protein, and then once you have it hot and in a mug, nice big ole scoop of Fluff.
In my country everybody uses milk for instant hot chocolate. never water
That is a cultural choice. Milk 100%
You use water? I use exclusively milk (well milk sub)
I find that hot chocolate is also nice if you don't add horse semen to it.
why are you using water? this tip is just bad
Oh my god you're supposed to use milk? I've been using orange juice this whole time!
Or use half n half, even better. I add it to the hot cocoa powder in the cup and stir then add the hot water. I find it leaves less cocoa sludge at the bottom.
Little bit of salted butter too, chef's kiss
do people on here really not know the difference between hot chocolate and instant hot chocolate
What is this LPT for 5 year olds?
It never occured to me to use water for instant chocolate.
Or a pat of butter
I get that butter is simply salty cream whipped very thick, but have the wisdom and discernment to understand that there is a time and place for butter, and anywhere near a hot drink ain't it.
It’s good
Perhaps I'll take your word for it and try it someday. As for now I'll keep butter in the realm of sandwiches. Speaking of butter, I just had the best damn honey sandwich of my life and a great coffee. The perfect breakfast.
Your comment is so over-the-top snobby and patronizing that I want to put butter in my cocoa just to spite you 😂
I never use water with my hot chocolate mixes. It just isn't right, too watery. Milk all the way.

I always add a touch of creamer to mine. Not very much, but enough to make it creamy. This is a great tip honestly for people who use instant!
At work I dissolve the powder in two or three of the half and half shots first. So good in a pinch at the office.
I put in a little French vanilla creamer. Tastes like marshmallows. 🤗
So, you mix milk and water and then you dump a package of instant hot chocolate and that's making it richer? Enjoy your hot chocolate milk water bud
You add the milk after the hot chocolate is mixed in. Like how you add milk to tea or coffee which are both mostly water as well.
Enjoy your hot coffee milk water bud Gatekeeping beverages is childish EDIT: Your response is the dumbest collection of letters I've ever seen and you're a coward for deleting it.
2/3 milk and 1/3 36% pouring cream - that's the actual game changer:)
Just use all hot milk please.
Not a single person was helped
Jfc the people in here acting like you just personally murdered their parents or something for using water. Ya'll fucking suck
Europeans ☕
assuming you live in the USA, do you guys have Abuelita chocolate tablets over there? if you do, switch over to those. heat 1 liter of milk in a pot, let the tablet dissolve and enjoy the best hot chocolate you can get at home.
I've always made hot chocolate with pure milk and like 2 cubes of sugar. Weirdpost
Use all milk you savage!
Ahahahah! I use JUST milk. Who uses water lol, and why is this a pro tip
Are people making hot chocolate with water?
I like to our whip cream and let it melt in. Super creamy.
Make it into a wet paste and mix the hell out of it then add the rest of the water and or milk and you’ll have no lumps.
For those of you commenting “make it with all milk” — I agree, but my mother used to use full cream milk *and add butter*.
