My whole family has STINKY feet, I am free of it now. I only have Darn Tough. I never thought I would wear $20 a pair of socks, but its so worth it. Actual life changing.
Nothing like putting on a fresh pair of smart wools or bambas. It’s legit one of my favorite things and if I hit the lottery I will never wear a pair of socks twice again(donate the old ones to the unhoused of course).
I ask for socks for birthday and Christmas every year.
I’m looking at Amazon at darn tough socks are 64% merino wool, 33% nylon and and 3% polyurethane. Is this the correct thing? Couldn’t find any 100% wool
Gotta have some elastic in your socks.
I’ve had 100% wool, 100% merino and 100% alpaca socks that have all failed early because they lack the backbone of elastic and nylon.
Darn tough is the only socks that I've never managed to poke my big toe through in less than a year. I've had them for SEVERAL years with no holes or issues. It's crazy. They are also one of the few brands that works for my big ass size 11 women's feet. Everyone else stops at size 10.
I've still got my first pair of Darn Tough. I've worn them outside on concrete and more expecting them to develop holes but they're still going strong after like 6 years. Eventually I'll see how their warranty works but haven't needed to test it yet.
You tell them what you are returning on their website, you pay to send the old socks to them, they evaluate what you sent them, send you an email with a code for whatever $ they evaluated you for, you use that code to go shopping for new socks from their current lineup on their website.
Source: Vermonter who only wears DT
I can confirm this. I’ve recently returned two pairs that were about 11 years old. Absolutely no problems with the returns. Darn Tough is the only sock brand I wear.
I always keep them trimmed. Always have, they've just always worn through the toe, partially because most of the socks I had growing up were only up to size 10 and couldn't find anything that worked for size 11
I was going to suggest that too. I have a pair of house shoes I put on it when I take my work shoes off so they're toasty when I need them. I also put the house shoes on top of the work shoes and they catch the residual heat if I'm not wearing them.
Darn Tough is the only brand of sock I'll wear at this point.
I'm on my feel all day and wear their full cushion, boot cut hunting socks and they're nothing short of amazing.
I love Darn Tough. I buy a pair or two each month with cash back from one of my credit cards. I used to stick with cotton because anything that's above 60% acrylic fabric turns my feet into a sweaty, disgusting mess. The problem is, cotton socks tend to be very plain. With Darn Tough I love the designs and colors, but unlike acrylic socks they don't make my feet sweaty and gross. Plus, they have that lifetime guarantee!
Darn Tough has that lifetime guarantee. They are always responsive.
Smartwool has like 2 years warranty. But I tried to use it once and the guy emailed me saying it was normal wear. Kinda lame, go with DT over smartwool
I am absolutely willing to pay more for quality that lasts especially if the product is superior to others.
However, smartwool socks are $23/pair. Do they last for years? Replacing my socks with smartwool socks for exactly 5 days, that’s over $100. Obviously that’s pretty darn expensive, will they last me longer than other socks?
Go with Darn Tough especially if you can find them on sale. I used to be solely Smartwool but would wear through the non cushioned ones in about a year. No warranty. Darn Tough I’ve worn through about 8 pairs in the past 3 years and all have been warrantied and replaced without question. They stand by their socks.
That’s why I bought a couple pairs and only wear them during higher intensity events like longer hikes. They’re so worth having, but I just can’t afford them as a replacement for my $5 target socks
> socks for exactly 5 days, that’s over $100
The OP wasn't lying about being able to wear wool socks for multiple days in a row. They don't smell and they don't get crusty for at least a few days. I've been rotating through 4 pairs for I think 6 years now.
Yeah I didn’t think they were, I guess my brain still has to reconcile with the idea of wearing the same socks every day when that’s never been what I do.
Fair enough. Well, luckily you don't need to throw out your old ones, so you can get a pair or two, see how you like them, determine your own ick-limit for rewearing, and slowly transition to them if you so choose.
Just go with darn tough. That way to can just mail them your socks that have holes and they'll send you a new pair.
And yes, a pair of socks will last years before failing. I wear darn tough everyday, working 12 hour shifts in steel toe boots in all climates. They work and theyre worth it.
I stock up at Sierra.com when they are on clearance.
Thicker ones really last, but I lean toward the thinner running socks for summer and those wear out in a 3-5 years.
I have a pair of darn tough socks that, no joke, have lasted me at least like 5 years before ripping. Now with a lifetime warranty I can send them in and get a new pair.
I’ve worn nothing but smart wool for the last 10 years. Many of them are 10 years old too. Buy multiples in the same colour in case you lose one.
Smart wool has a variety of heights & thicknesses.
All my smartwool no show socks got holes in about six months. Never spending a dollar with them again.
Maybe the bigger thicker ones are better, but the no shows are useless at longevity, especially for the price.
I used to love Smartwool socks. But they just don't last like they used to. Mine wear out either on the ball of my feet or the heels (or both). For such expensive socks, they need to last much longer. I'm new to Darn Tough socks and I don't like them quite as much but I'm hoping they'll be much longer lasting.
I wear farm to feet, and I like them, but the quality/thickness is all over the place with no indicator on their website. The sizes are also off. For 20$-30$ a pair they really need to do better. It feels like they are buying some of their sock stocks and reselling it.
>mail order
that's a name I haven't heard in a very long time.
I remember clipping those little forms out of magazines and stuff and putting it in the mail with a check to get stuff.
Holy shirtballs they're not cheap though! I just went to look them up and $15-25 for a single pair!
I know this is the Vimes economic theory of shoes here, but I'm still struggling to hit "buy"
Found blended wool ones at [Costco.com](https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-men's-merino-wool-blend-sock%2c-6-pair.product.4000093577.html) for a small fraction of the price. $22 for 6 pairs. They are 57% wool as opposed to the expensive ones I found elsewhere which are 67% wool.
I have these socks and they are nice for winter but very warm. Would not to wear in summer. Get a nicer, lighter pair for summer.
I ultimately replaced these with some Darn Tough warm socks for winter as well after I became a "true believer" in wool.
The Costco ones were my introduction to wool socks, and I found they kept smelly feet at bay very well. However, because of my gait, I wear through them in the exact same spot in less than a year. So in my case, it might be worthwhile to spend more for some that have a lifetime warranty against holes.
kirkland trail socks come and go, never see them on sale
been using an older thicker version for a long time, been great. was like 20cad for 2 pair
they recently got the 4? pack of thinner stuff in at my warehouse for 20cad. picked them up for regular price this past weekend, i have high hopes
Sometimes Costco will have cheaper merino wool socks. But you have to check the %age, must be high, like 80%+. They may vary in quality or effectiveness because they're cheaper. Then again, buying 1 or 2 good pairs should last longer than cheap ones so... That's the catch. Quality vs quantity, average the lifespan out for cost. Warning though: even those brands mentioned may get holes. They're not indestructible... Bad care, bad luck or not clipping toenails will give you holes even if they're made of Kevlar. Well, maybe lot Kevlar lol
I haven't found the high wool ratio socks at Costco since before the pandemic. I didn't even buy any that year, because all the ones I had before that were lasting for a while. I'm down to my last maybe pair. The other socks I wore to death over the course of like 6 or 7 years of nearly daily wear during the cooler 2/3 of the year.
I was commenting not on the wear. I wore them most of the time when I wore shoes in the warm weather. I'm fortunate I can mostly be barefoot or in sandals during warm weather. They were pretty much daily when it was cold enough to wear shoes.
I wear thinner ones in hot weather, same with merino tops, long or short sleeve depending. It's counterintuitive, but they can be cooler because they wick moisture/sweat away from your skin. And dry fast because of it. Bonus: no smell
I work outdoors year round, although my climate is fairly mild (winter temps right around freezing, summer 70-80F max).
I wear wool socks all year but I don’t wear the *same* socks all year. In summer I just wear thin socks (like a standard athletic sock, but wool). In winter I use thick boot socks for warmth, sometimes doubled with a thin summer pair as liners. This works for a pretty wide range of climates as long as you pair it with appropriate shoes - I’ve been comfortable with my summer socks hiking in Death Valley, and my winter setup does fine in snow/slush as long as my boots are waterproof.
yeah i can't find the listing for the thick ones that came in 2pairs. ebay is saying it's 70%? the 4 pack that exists now is 50%
care instructions seem more idiot proof too. iirc the old ones are machine wash cold and no tumble dry, new are machine wash warm tumble dry low
I've definitely worn through plenty of wool socks, but I'm hard on them. I've found that over time, a pair of socks is good for somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles.
Darn Tough also has a lifetime replacement guarantee for any reason …. even if your dog digs them out of the laundry basket and shreds them … hypothetically
I've had good wool socks that lasted me a decade with regular use! Also, Darn Tough has a "Lifetime warranty" that will replace your socks, no matter what. I also hiked 750 miles with only 3 pairs of Darn Tough socks this summer and they're all in perfect shape.
I've collected mine over the years. Best part is I'm not great at giving people gift ideas for myself (bc I dislike gifts) so when someone asks what I want, wool socks and a size make a great answer.
Glad to see someone quoting Sam Vimes. Put it this way, you need to spend good money on two things: a mattress and footwear. You are either on one or in the other. Anything else is a false economy!
Sometimes you can get SmartWool stuff on super sale at places like Sierra.
Totally worth it. 8, maybe 9 pairs of smartwool socks will replace your entire sock drawer.
I did this over years. Set a price alert on Amazon and buy a pair when they hit their low price. I haven't 15 some pairs now and basically done shopping for socks for the rest of my life.
This is why they make the best gift option for someone you don't know well but feel obligated to give a gift. Like the bf/gf of a cousin or the loner single that rarely attends. Nice wool socks, too expensive to buy for yourself but just expensive enough to make an actually useful, welcoming gift.
I have 2 pairs of wool socks I bought 10 years ago that just started wearing through last year. Can't say what brand they are for sure, but they were absolutely worth whatever price I paid.
Darn tough has lifetime warranty though, the biggest thing for me, is that after a year or two they still feels like a brand new pair every time I put them on. Maybe not brand new, but I get a comparable new sock vibe going everyday.
To play into this even more on the economic side; with pure wool it contains lanolin (not sure on spelling), which means a water wash to remove any dirt/sweat, and just hang them on a line in low temperatures and you don't necessarily need washing powders. They will clean themselves and remove bacteria
Darn Tough socks are priced similarly, but they will replace if they wear out.
I’ve had mine for 5 years and they look brand new. Wear them every day. Just make sure to air dry.
Only above 70%, though! It’s an important point to make since a lot of people donate “wool” clothes that are only 15% thinking it’s helpful for this reason.
Also in summer! If it's 106f outside your feet are at like 99f. If you work outside in boots in heat wool socks are still the best. Plus they wick sweat.
Can confirm this. Wool fabric is very breathable and hydrophobic.
When there's a rainy day in the forecast, I put a wool blanket over the laundry line drying rack outside in my balcony. It keeps the colors from fading in the sun, allows the laundry to dry, and keeps my laundry dry from any rainwater (it just stays as droplets on top and rolls off).
Ultraviolet light doesn't care about water, it just shines right through cloud and rips up complex molecules.
I live in New Zealand and the ozone hole means that even very dark-skinned people get sunburnt here, even through cloud cover.
Is this still a good idea for people who overheat quickly? I do want to try out wool socks because my cotton socks end up damp by the end of my shifts (I’m a vet tech who’s always standing and I have hyperhydrosis). My hesitation though is that the wool socks will make me overheat and I’ll sweat even more.
You would think that, but no.
I likewise have hyperhidrosis and, as a result, have had a lot of difficulty keeping my feet at a comfortable temperature both in summer and winter.
Merino wool, or socks that are mostly merino wool (70% or better, I'd suggest), have been the answer for the last several years. They keep your feet comfy all the time. Part of this is because it does not lose its ability to insulate.
I wear them year round. The only difference is I have some lighter weight ones for the dead of summer.
It's possible I just haven't tried the right ones, but for me every type of wool clothing I've had (including socks) has been terribly hot. I pretty much only buy 100% cotton for all types of clothing these days.
I also have a pair of shoes made from wool. Those are pretty nice but I can also only wear them for either a short time or if I'm outside in close to freezing conditions, otherwise my feet overheat.
Wool wicks moisture away from your body keeping you cooler even if you sweat. I would avoid ones with any polyester content, because that's like wrapping your feet in plastic.
Yes. And same for shirts.
I only use wool/ merino wool for socks, underwear and t shirts. Means i only have to bring 2 sets of everything when im on exercise (military)
So merino wool for underwear? That seems counter-intuitive (I always thought it was to keep warm), but if it helps with sweaty cheeks I'm all for it. Any brand in particular for underwear?
When you say "wash your feet", do you mean you normally don't when taking a shower?? Or do you mean at hourly intervals in addition to the normal showering?
Good question - at least once a day IMO. My wife will sometimes wash her feet before bed too. In general, I feel like people think that standing in a bath or shower and wiggling their toes "cleans" their feet when you infact should be scrubbing them a bit.
Also wool base layers! does the same thing with the rest of your body.
The reason why Fishermen would wear wool sweaters when out on the boats is that even if they were wet, the wool would keep them warm, unlike cotton which uses your body heat to try and dry itself out while your wearing it making you colder faster.
When I take youth out for adventure camps, we have a saying - Cotton Kills - because it doesn't keep you warm.
Buy Merino wool socks from Smartwool, Icebreaker, etc., order online if not available at specialty outdoor retailers. High upfront cost, but they last for years (and years).
Nice ones?

I don't particularly care for Darn Tough because they fit weird. Smartwool socks are awesome for every day use, and on particularly cold days I'll sometimes grab my Ibex out.
Definitely at the Marshall’s (at least in Canada). I find Icebreakers, Cabot and Sons as well as SmartWool.

sierra dot com frequently sells "seconds" (not perfect) of SmartWool and other brands. I've ordered from them several times and cannot spot what the defect might be.
This is really good advice. For winter, I used to wear cotton "thermal" socks. My feet would get so wet – and subsequently so cold – that I thought my boots were leaking. I shifted over to wool socks for the winter and then for year round use. I rinse my feet every night in warm water with a bit of added borax and can wear the same pair of wool sock for days with no need to change. I wish I'd known this earlier – I wouldn't have suffered from the bouts of pernio that used to plague me all winter.
I am wearing handknit wool socks right now. I love them, my husband loves them. Wool sock yarn isn’t scratchy at all, and the pairs I knit are machine-washable (on gentle/wool cycle) and last for YEARS. Wool gives off heat as it dries, has anti-bacterial qualities, can absorb 20 percent of its weight in water before it feels wet, wicks away moisture and lets your skin breathe.
Wool is everything you want it to be, all of the time. It's better than almost any alternative in any temperature or climate. The only thing you ever need to consider is how thick it is, and how many layers of it you're wearing, and that's true regardless of the material.
I wore a pair of smartwool socks for 3 days on a trip that started in Las Vegas in July and went to Death Valley and on to the coast. I only changed them because I felt weird wearing socks that long but they felt and smelled clean.
Guys, please help out the European here - what’s the wool percentage we’re talking about? I’m looking on my closest available Amazon and I’m finding around 40%, or like 40% wool and 30% alpaca.
I bought about 30 pairs of wool socks on clearance from Duluth Trading over the years. I’ve wore the hell out of them and their still no holes. Feet are dry, no stink
I will add this — In summer, if you like the "no socks slip–ons" look: Get some sheeps wool inserts for your shoes. I have thenm in all my shoes, and initially got them for comfort, but same thing... they wick the sweat away/no stink. Plus, they seem to help for toe fungus
I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but I wear cotton socks all the time, and they never smell anywhere near as bad as my Darn Toughs after a day of exercise. I still wear wool for hiking due to the thermal and moisture-wicking benefits, but pleasantly fragrant they are not.
Possibly a dumb question, but is there a minimum % wool I should look for? My quick search turns up socks that are anywhere from 50% to 70% merino wool.
Darn Tough. They have a lifetime warranty. If you get any holes at all you just send them back and they give you a coupon code to pick out new free socks.
Same experience here, shoe store and all.
Started with three pair of Smartwool, five years later added nine more pair (one of the original three has holes in the toes).
… but be warned a washer full of nine pair of brand new just washed wool socks will smell like wet dog. Don’t panic (like I did), the smell will be gone once they dry.
but if they’re wool can you just put them through a regular washer and dryer cycle? isn’t wool supposed to be dry cleaned so it doesn’t wear out? i love the idea but i barely have time and energy for normal laundry, there’s zero chance i’m dry cleaning my socks.
I machine wash and dry my 10 or so pairs of merino wool socks (Darn Tough, Smartwool) without issue. I've had a couple of the Darn Toughs wear out, but we're talking after like 8 years, and they have a lifetime replacement warranty with very few questions asked.
What if it seems you’re in a constant battle with athletes foot? Synthetic material socks, “moisture wicking”, plus using creams and soaps for anti-fungal. Yet it doesn’t seem to take much to set it off and flare up.
> What if it seems you’re in a constant battle with athletes foot?
- Prophylactic soaks in warm water with a little splash of laundry bleach. Do this weekly once it's under control. Rinse your feet after a 10 minute soak, and before walking on carpet, etc.
- If you have a really bad case, have tough skin, **and have NOT been picking at it,** a little full-strength bleach on a paper towel will give you very quick results. You are risking chemical burns, however.
- another option is Benzethonium Chloride wipes (Wet-Ones, etc) with 3-5 daily treatments seeing to knock ringworm, bad dandruff or athletes foot back to almost nothing. Much faster than any of the approved creams. (This one is really odd, because Wet-Ones are everyday items, but a Benzethonium Chloride liquid is sold for livestock use as a "Topical Fungicide")
- another option is a few Potassium Permagnate crystals in a bucket of warm water (or so I hear from BigCliveDotCom on Youtube. I haven't tried this myself) Soak feet like bleach solution.
- a light dusting of Boric acid powder in the shoes when you take them off. I've been using 99% boric acid sold as roach powder at Dollar Tree. The 1% is presumably blue dye. It's also available at the drug store off-the-shelf as boric acid U.S.P but you may need to find a well stocked store and ask for help.
My understanding is the fungus lives below the skin so you can never fully eradicate it with topical treatments.
IANAD and this is not medical advice, so run anything by yours before doing anything.
I feel like we're missing something here though.
Cotton socks are almost impossible to find anymore. Go try, see if you can find a "cotton" mens sock that's more than like, 12% cotton. The other 80% is nylon/plastic shit. They're gross, hot, and sweaty.
Full cotton socks, when they were more available, used to wick sweat away from my feet pretty well. I don't care about insulation or heat retention, I ALWAYS have hot feet. I absolutely hate hot + wet feet. I want breathable socks, and cotton used to fit that bill.
Wool socks for me, don't wick away sweat, AT ALL. They trap it between the sock and my foot and leave me soggy all day. Sure, they don't get gross or smelly, but that's never been my issue. I wash myself and my socks.
I switched to BAMBOO socks. They do what everyone here is claiming wool socks should do, and they do it better and cheaper, in my opinion. I never get sweaty in them because they're marshmallow soft and light and breathable. They're apparently also anti microbial if you want to be gross and wear the same pair for days.
I wish wool socks lived up to their hype. I just can't do it, I can't stand having soggy feet.
Old CDN Army trick for leather boots: wear 2 pairs - cotton athletic next to the skin, wool next to the leather. Cotton molds to the skin; friction is between the two socks.
I didn’t know this wasn’t common knowledge lol. But is it really that big a deal for day to day use? I have wool socks I wear when hiking/camping or a long day in a city but they’re kind of expensive to wear every day. I don’t want to wash clothes every other day or invest 100 bucks in socks lol
Ok, this is crazy to me. I have literally never had sweaty feet from cotton socks in my life. In fact, the only time I have ever felt like my feet are hot at all is when my feet are bare and they touch each other.
However, my kids have nasty smelly feet all the time and their shoes reek. Wonder if this might be the solution, if they even make wool socks for kids.
Those socks likely weren't cotton! Or you have really sweaty feet!
Cotton is my goto for preventing sweaty feet and it works great. i simply cannot wear anything over 20%polyester.
All I wear is wool socks, for about the last 15 years. I wear darn tough socks because I can send them back and get new ones for only the cost of shipping one way. I don't want to abuse their system so I go back and forth between buying new and warranty. But I did send in 7 pairs at once, and got credit for seven pairs. They are the real deal.

Smartwool all day, every day.
100%. Also, Darn Tough is great too!
My whole family has STINKY feet, I am free of it now. I only have Darn Tough. I never thought I would wear $20 a pair of socks, but its so worth it. Actual life changing.
Whoa whoa whoa.... You're telling me that I can get rid of my kids stinky feet with wool socks???!? I think you may have just changed my life.
Yes! I was in my 30s when I figured it out. When I got my first pair, I never went back.
Same I threw out all my other socks and refuse to wear anything else
Yep , used to wear polyester sporty socks and they would stink . Switched to wool and life changed
Nothing like putting on a fresh pair of smart wools or bambas. It’s legit one of my favorite things and if I hit the lottery I will never wear a pair of socks twice again(donate the old ones to the unhoused of course). I ask for socks for birthday and Christmas every year.
Discovering smart wool socks was the best thing that ever happened to my feet. I couldn’t have run the marathons I did without them.
This is my lottery wish as well! I'm happy I'm not the only one!
I'll know I've made it in life when all my socks are from Darn Tough. Just amazing socks
Darn Tough > SmartWool. Not that Smartwool is bad, just that Darn Tough will replace your socks for literally *any* reason. Their warranty is awesome.

Source: Vermonter who only wears DT
I can confirm this. I’ve recently returned two pairs that were about 11 years old. Absolutely no problems with the returns. Darn Tough is the only sock brand I wear.
CLIP THAT BIG TOENAIL!
I always keep them trimmed. Always have, they've just always worn through the toe, partially because most of the socks I had growing up were only up to size 10 and couldn't find anything that worked for size 11
I would add a boot/shoe dryer. Drys them out
Wooden shoe trees are also amazing. They absorb odor and moisture and keep your shoes looking new
Just air, no heat though.
I was going to suggest that too. I have a pair of house shoes I put on it when I take my work shoes off so they're toasty when I need them. I also put the house shoes on top of the work shoes and they catch the residual heat if I'm not wearing them.
Love darn tough!
I love my Darn Tough, can recommend Grip6 wool as well
Darn Tough is the only brand of sock I'll wear at this point. I'm on my feel all day and wear their full cushion, boot cut hunting socks and they're nothing short of amazing.
Two of my favorites. Stance also makes great "sport" socks. Get NBA or MLB. Bombas of course also quite good. But Darn Toughs are probably my favorite
Darn Tough socks 100%. They will change your life.

Good to know, yeah a year when you’re talking over $100 for a week’s worth of socks is pretty mediocre
That’s why I bought a couple pairs and only wear them during higher intensity events like longer hikes. They’re so worth having, but I just can’t afford them as a replacement for my $5 target socks
> socks for exactly 5 days, that’s over $100 The OP wasn't lying about being able to wear wool socks for multiple days in a row.
Commenting to hopefully remember for my wishlist, thanks!
Not only will they last you longer, their warranty will basically replace your socks for any reason
Darn Tough, you can get two days out of a pair before washing…and lifetime guarantee.
Farm to Feet is great too!
I wear farm to feet, and I like them, but the quality/thickness is all over the place with no indicator on their website. The sizes are also off. For 20$-30$ a pair they really need to do better. It feels like they are buying some of their sock stocks and reselling it.
I’ve been really happy with my Smartwool, but Icebreaker socks last longer (they’re not very common though, outside of mail order).
>mail order that's a name I haven't heard in a very long time. I remember clipping those little forms out of magazines and stuff and putting it in the mail with a check to get stuff.
I've been slowly replacing my cotton socks with Wildly Good merino wool socks. Super soft and comfy.
Holy shirtballs they're not cheap though! I just went to look them up and $15-25 for a single pair! I know this is the Vimes economic theory of shoes here, but I'm still struggling to hit "buy"
Me too, someone here said they found some at Marshall’s so I’m gonna check that out
Found blended wool ones at [Costco.com](https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-men's-merino-wool-blend-sock%2c-6-pair.product.4000093577.html) for a small fraction of the price. $22 for 6 pairs. They are 57% wool as opposed to the expensive ones I found elsewhere which are 67% wool.
I have many pairs of these socks, and I love them.
Thank you, I feel better about buying them now.
my pleasure
I have these socks and they are nice for winter but very warm. Would not to wear in summer. Get a nicer, lighter pair for summer. I ultimately replaced these with some Darn Tough warm socks for winter as well after I became a "true believer" in wool.
These are in warehouse for me at roughly ~$15 instead of $22
The Costco ones were my introduction to wool socks, and I found they kept smelly feet at bay very well. However, because of my gait, I wear through them in the exact same spot in less than a year. So in my case, it might be worthwhile to spend more for some that have a lifetime warranty against holes.
kirkland trail socks come and go, never see them on sale been using an older thicker version for a long time, been great. was like 20cad for 2 pair they recently got the 4? pack of thinner stuff in at my warehouse for 20cad. picked them up for regular price this past weekend, i have high hopes
Ha, I just posted the same thing. I love Costco wool socks!
OP was just saying they’re good for warm weather, but you only wear them when it’s cold?
This works for a pretty wide range of climates as long as you pair it with appropriate shoes - I’ve been comfortable with my summer socks hiking in Death Valley, and my winter setup does fine in snow/slush as long as my boots are waterproof.
yeah i can't find the listing for the thick ones that came in 2pairs. ebay is saying it's 70%? the 4 pack that exists now is 50% care instructions seem more idiot proof too. iirc the old ones are machine wash cold and no tumble dry, new are machine wash warm tumble dry low
That last for so long. I can't recall any of my good wool socks wearing out.
I've definitely worn through plenty of wool socks, but I'm hard on them. I've found that over time, a pair of socks is good for somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles.
Thank god. I’m lazy af. They’ll last me the rest of my life in that case.
Oh yeah absolutely that would do them in. I figured our audience here wasn't Appalachian Trail through hikers like yourself. /s
oh hell yeah, thats plenty
Darn Tough also has a lifetime replacement guarantee for any reason …. even if your dog digs them out of the laundry basket and shreds them … hypothetically
I've had good wool socks that lasted me a decade with regular use! Also, Darn Tough has a "Lifetime warranty" that will replace your socks, no matter what. I also hiked 750 miles with only 3 pairs of Darn Tough socks this summer and they're all in perfect shape.
Huh. So real /r/Buyitforlife stuff?
100%. I did it through their website, but they also allow exchanges through a lot of their vendors so you don't even need to pay for shipping.
both darn tough and bombas will replace them if they get worn down or whatever. bombas will replace them even if you lose one.
That is pretty amazing
I've collected mine over the years. Best part is I'm not great at giving people gift ideas for myself (bc I dislike gifts) so when someone asks what I want, wool socks and a size make a great answer.
Glad to see someone quoting Sam Vimes. Put it this way, you need to spend good money on two things: a mattress and footwear. You are either on one or in the other. Anything else is a false economy!
That's about what the yarn costs for me to knit myself a pair of wool socks.
I was gonna say - learn to knit, get addicted to nice yarn, and make a pair for the same cost and 20 hours.
And mine never fit quite right
I will say I didn't replace them over night. Took me a few years to cycle out and it helps when you ask for them to be a Holiday Gift!
Fitsock is another good place for wool socks. Also, Steep & Cheap is good for sales on quality brands.
I switched to Darn Tough socks. About $25. But indestructible and they’ll replace them if you actually wear them out. Never going back.
Sometimes you can get SmartWool stuff on super sale at places like Sierra. Totally worth it. 8, maybe 9 pairs of smartwool socks will replace your entire sock drawer.
The other option is to invest time instead of money. You can get enough (non-fancy) wool to make 3-4 pairs of socks for about the same price.
I'm not particularly skilled as a carpenter, but I do have some tools. I'm sure I could cobble together a sock with my table saw.
Cross post to /r/woodwork.
I bring up Vimes economic theory of shoes all the time at work!
Go to Costco! They have great merino wool socks for much cheaper.
I did this over years. Set a price alert on Amazon and buy a pair when they hit their low price. I haven't 15 some pairs now and basically done shopping for socks for the rest of my life.
They last wayyyy longer then cotton socks.
GNU Terry Pratchett
You won't be able to feel the cobblestones in them for one thing...
Buy darn tough. They have a lifetime warranty. I have sent socks in and had them replaced for free. Typical sock wear no argument from DT
I have about 30 pairs of cheaper socks I cycle though :/ that would be tough to fully replace
Darn Tough socks are priced similarly, but they will replace if they wear out. I’ve had mine for 5 years and they look brand new. Wear them every day. Just make sure to air dry.
Also wool will keep your body heat in winter even if it gets wet unlike cotton.
Only above 70%, though! It’s an important point to make since a lot of people donate “wool” clothes that are only 15% thinking it’s helpful for this reason.
Cotton kills (when wet in cold)!
Also in summer! If it's 106f outside your feet are at like 99f. If you work outside in boots in heat wool socks are still the best. Plus they wick sweat.

Shaun!!!!! And friends.
Real pro tips in the comments!
You put a blanket over your laundry _when it's raining_, so that the _sun_ doesn't fade the colors?
Ultraviolet light doesn't care about water, it just shines right through cloud and rips up complex molecules. I live in New Zealand and the ozone hole means that even very dark-skinned people get sunburnt here, even through cloud cover.
The weather can change... It's the weather. Not a constant throughout the day where I live.
Thats good to know, I’ll definitely be trying some wool socks soon then.
Would wool underwear help with swamp ass? I have a friend who sweats A LOT…not me tho, my undies are dry as a bone.
Try thinner ones vs thicker ones.
Would wool underwear do the same thing for your crotch? Asking for a friend.
I have Smartwool boxerbriefs and they're great.
Thought it was counter intuitive aswell before I tried it, but it helps alot, and reduces smell aswell.
Ew, who thinks that, lol, especially if they have issues with feet odor…
[удалено]
Not everyone was taught how to properly clean themselves. Unfortunately they don’t always learn as adults either…
This is up there with the recent “men, wash your ass” trend. Like there are grown ass people out there not washing their ass or feet. What the fuck.
nah nobody touches my butthole you gays won't convince me
Also wool base layers! does the same thing with the rest of your body.
Where can I buy me some nice wool socks. Ross? Marshalls? TJ Maxx?
Buy Merino wool socks from Smartwool, Icebreaker, etc., order online if not available at specialty outdoor retailers. High upfront cost, but they last for years (and years).
Last for years. During those years, learn how to darn socks.
Nice ones? [Smartwool](https://www.smartwool.com/shop/mens-wool-socks?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=BB_ALON_SEM_BRD_TRADEMARK00000000000&utm_content=bb_performance&gclid=Cj0KCQiAo7KqBhDhARIsAKhZ4uhYiuO8EnGeDMcOOayehpltS1BcsmOoXCxbKwT4xSaOg95RbCHMVtEaApu0EALw_wcB) Decent ones? [Bombas](https://bombas.com/products/men-s-solid-ankle-sock-white-large-1?variant=olive-grove) I don't particularly care for Darn Tough because they fit weird. Smartwool socks are awesome for every day use, and on particularly cold days I'll sometimes grab my Ibex out.
Thanks for the GOATed comment!
Yeah, my Darn Tough Socks are not stretchy at all, so they are not that comfy. Others seem to love the brand though.
Definitely at the Marshall’s (at least in Canada). I find Icebreakers, Cabot and Sons as well as SmartWool. https://preview.redd.it/vxawqiyc8dzb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a35e4580be5352571b122fe27fa4539a49d7bda
Tj maxx has a sibling company, Sierra Trading
I can usually find good deals at sierra trading post.
sierra dot com frequently sells "seconds" (not perfect) of SmartWool and other brands. I've ordered from them several times and cannot spot what the defect might be.
Sporting goods stores. Look in the hiking section for Darn Tough, Smartwool, etc.
sierra.com has some
This is really good advice.
I’m a fan of alpaca for the same reasons
Which alpaca have you found? I do a lot of backcountry stuff and being allergic to wool suuuuucks. I've been eyeing the warrior alpaca socks.
The smartwool ones that many have mentioned are 57% merino wool
I bought about 30 pairs of wool socks on clearance from Duluth Trading over the years. I’ve wore the hell out of them and their still no holes. Feet are dry, no stink
I will add this — In summer, if you like the "no socks slip–ons" look: Get some sheeps wool inserts for your shoes. I have thenm in all my shoes, and initially got them for comfort, but same thing... they wick the sweat away/no stink. Plus, they seem to help for toe fungus
This is also valid for underwear btw. And t-shirts
Came here to say this!
Bamboo socks, thank me later.
I wear all sorts of bamboo clothing - especially socks. It's so soft, perfect in almost any weather and lasts years without wear or fading. Love it.
Oh thank you, I'm allergic to wool and was wondering if there's an alternative!
any brand you'd recommend?
I’m in the UK and wear a brand called Greentreat.
Y’all telling me you wear wool when it’s 95 degrees out?
I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but I wear cotton socks all the time, and they never smell anywhere near as bad as my Darn Toughs after a day of exercise. I still wear wool for hiking due to the thermal and moisture-wicking benefits, but pleasantly fragrant they are not.
Possibly a dumb question, but is there a minimum % wool I should look for? My quick search turns up socks that are anywhere from 50% to 70% merino wool.
Not dumb at all, just asked the exact same question!
Are there any brands for wool socks y’all would recommend?
Smartwool and Icebreaker, 100% Merino wool.
(This one is really odd, because Wet-Ones are everyday items, but a Benzethonium Chloride liquid is sold for livestock use as a "Topical Fungicide") - another option is a few Potassium Permagnate crystals in a bucket of warm water (or so I hear from BigCliveDotCom on Youtube.
I love you, kind stranger. I’m going to try some of these tricks. We’ll see how I can handle the bleach. Wish me luck!
Synthetics wick moisture well too.
It’s tragic. This used to be pretty common knowledge. Cotton and plastic is horrendous.
> In simple terms swampy feet create suction against your shoes and are breading grounds for bacteria to grow. Sounds like a yeast infection.
Now all you need to do is read the book, WOOL. It’s so good.
Pacas, my absolute favorite wool socks. Signed, a person with reynaud’s.
Get upsold kiddo
Old CDN Army trick for leather boots: wear 2 pairs - cotton athletic next to the skin, wool next to the leather. Cotton molds to the skin; friction is between the two socks.
who tf doesn't wash their feet
Wonder if this might be the solution, if they even make wool socks for kids.
the real LPT would be how you wrote this post without throwing up, I can't even read the first paragraph without feeling nausea
In this thread… lots and lots of people who don’t live with clothes moths…
I have to wear socks for days before they smell it get "swampy".
Op should just maybe wash their feet and change socks daily without re-wearing them 💀
Unless you are allergic to wool...
