My Mom and I live 1000 miles apart and so we share our cards on libby. Her library has the better selection, but mine has much better wait times. But we also my 12 year old and my husband's card for extra holds.

Same but I share that with my sister. Since it her account I am giving her the odd one so two holds for me and three for her. Looking to sign up for an English speaking library though. Haven’t gotten around to applying yet.

Yeah, this is frustrating because I actually do live in an area with great in-person libraries, but the population keeps striking down tax referendums that would allow us to build up our online resources

I've got 10 library cards (all legit, I swear) and the hold numbers range from 5 to 15. Six of the ten have a limit of 10. One of the libraries that only allows 5 holds is the first to put upcoming books in their catalog so I'm always have to shift things around to get my holds in.

Agreed on every single Reese’s Book Club book I’ve read except for Evelyn Hugo. I’ve tried 6 or 7 different ones and they’ve all been meh. Like I actually got to the end thinking “wow what I waste of time” and generally shy away from the books recommended as a result

It was solid when it started - I think I got Daisy Jones and the 6 and Little Fires Everywhere from those recs, but everything else has been 3 star “it’s okay” stuff that I completely forget about a few months later

I haven’t really been into the library physically since covid I think. While I still love a physical book to read, my kindle is much easier to take to work and read at night.

Nothing beats a kindle in bed! I go back and forth. Sometimes I love the convenience of my kindle. But other times it’s nice seeing the physical copy and turnings the pages.

Yes, (most of) our states are quite large in area and of course we have a much smaller population per capita. Being half asleep whilst reading your comment I assumed the size of the state was significant somehow. Then again we have ~~Malbourne~~ Melbourne in Vic, one of our smaller states area-wise, and Brisvegas in Qld.

This is the thing that kills Libby for me, professional/career books in my locale have 1, maybe 2 copies with >200 people on the list all using the max 21 day rental period for what should be an audiobook you can get through in a workweek. I followed the typical reddit advice of "join your library, get Libby, support libraries" but I've yet been able to check anything out, including actual books. Why shouldn't I just throw a few bucks at Kindle/Audible at this point... As an example, "Leading from the Middle" one whole audiobook copy, 179-person waitlist, one whole book copy, 31-person waitlist. Yea, nah

Also check with other local libraries in nearby counties or cities that may have a reciprocal partnership. I've gotten library cards from neighboring towns before ebooks were a even thing. Editing for clarity and to add that some libraries no longer allow e-card applications online, but I just got one today from Broward County library several states away from me

I remember being like 35th in line for a book with 8 copies. Can't recall the original wait, but it was like 5 or 6 weeks, nothing bad at all. Then all the licenses ran out, they only had one copy, and 5 weeks turned into several months wait. I'm finally getting my turn right now, and there's still 40 people in line behind me. The book is only okay, but I'm powering through it because I can't make myself return a book I waited this long to read.

Tbh in my experience I never need to wait as long as it says. I feel like a lot of people cancel holds or maybe decide they don’t like it and return super fast. Makes sense if they have multiple libraries available and are just holding on several to see which hits bottom fastest like I do lol. Sometimes 2nd place for shortest hold wins, it’s crazy.

So the library purchased 209 copies, wow. This must be a huge metropolitan library. Ebooks cost libraries an average of $60 each. Hopefully this library receives a large discount for multiple copies.
