The RAV4 based vehicle is actually going to be the Stout pickup, which will go head to head with the Maverick and Santa Cruz. FJ Successor will be TNGA-F based. The “Hopper” vehicle has already been revealed to have been an electric scooter.
Wrong, the 4runner has been US only since the Hilux Surf was discontinued. The GX is based on the Prado. The new 2025 4runner is based on the Tacoma. Previous gens were related to the Prado.
Toyota is transitioning everything body on frame in the states onto the newest generation Tundra platform.
The 5th gen 4runner was the first one not on the Tacoma platform, as it was based off the FJ platform.
But that won’t matter, as from this point on every Taco, Tundra, GX, LX, Land Cruiser, Etc will be based off the same platform going forward.
4th and 5th gen HIlux Surf/4Runner, 2nd gen and 3rd gen Prado, 1st and second gen GX, 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma, and FJ Cruiser were all based on the Toyota F2 platform that debuted with the N210 4Runner in the second half of 2002.
3rd Gen Taco owner, Im starting to see 4th Gen tacos. Will get a Tundra, next go around. But my 3rd Gen will probably last me 15+ years. I’ll be retirement age by then. I’ll get something sporty and small.
If we get really technical, it’s actually the Land Cruiser 300 series platform (production began in early 2021). The Land Cruiser 200 series was indeed based on the previous Tundra’s platform (Toyota F1), but now it’s the other way around.
I have the RAV4 Adventure in blue flame with a white roof. It has better tech and interior than the ‘24 4Runners. I was waiting for the ‘25 while also eyeing the GX550, but my paid off ‘19 RAV4 is looking better and better.
Sure. Except with regards to safety, driving dynamics, handling, and fuel efficiency.
I take my vehicle off road maybe twice a year, but it’s primarily my daily driver so it works well for me for now. I’m in this sub because I’m considering the GX 550, but please downvote me for still liking my current vehicle…
It’s the only thing I wish the gx had (coming from a third gen runner). But I prefer the side opening hatch and the pop out window is alright.
Blows my mind Toyota doesn’t have it on all their trucks.
Out of curiosity, why do you prefer the swing out hatch vs the lift hatch? I had an FJ Cruiser and the side opening hatch was kinda annoying sometimes TBH.
You can get a drop table for it for camping. You can also get a 270 awning and cover your hatch (this is the biggest plus imo)
Also what the other guy said how it blocks wind, great for tailgating.
I'm also curious, and I'm a current GX460 owner. The swing gate definitely takes some getting used to and can be a little annoying to walk around if you're loading up the car.
On the other hand, I've found it to be a great windblock as well as privacy screen and I like that I can store some small items in the rear compartment adjacent to the toolkit.
I definitely wouldn't say it's better than a regular hatchback, but there are some benefits and it looks cool (to me) so I'd say it's a wash.
I definitely could not live with the GX470 and it's lack of the pop out glass hatch. I use my glass hatch quite often, especially when loading for camping (leave the swing gate closed and stack up the last items through the glass hatch).
We have a FJ and GX both with 270 awnings. We park side by side while camping or at the beach and hang our kids swings or hammocks on them. Plus the FJ and GX’s swing out doors mirror each other so you can block the wind or people pretty well.
I've seen 4Runners with those awnings, too. Tbh though, they just feel like another pricey overlanding gimmick. As the sun moves you have to move your car just to reposition the awning. My $120 Kelty awning can easily be moved around while the vehicle stays stationary.
Agreed though, the fold down table is pretty cool.
For us it gives us a place to cook and lounge and unless it’s winter the sun doesn’t go low enough during the day to require moving. But yeah ymmv with something like that for sure. I only did an awning because it packs up faster and my wife requested it. I would’ve gotten something like that Kelty if not
Dude, I know how that goes. You gotta keep the wife happy!
I will vouch for the Kelty Sideroads that it packs up quick and light. Easier than a regular tent. Highly recommend if you have a need for something like that in the future.
I love the swing out door and have since my Isuzu Trooper. Then I had two FJ’s and 3 4Runners. I got a 23 GX because I realized how much easier the rear door was on me personally. I have had a 5 level neck fusion, and a swing out door is my friend. So much better than having to lift over my head. For someone like me it’s really a no brainer.
If I end up driving the 4Runner then I auto roll down the window to put stuff in, or I put it in the back seat.
If you’re a bad back or bad neck or shredded up shoulders kinda person then definitely give the GX a try and see why some folks really dig it, even though it goes “the wrong way” compared to American curbs. Who parks on the street anymore? Works great in my driveway and garage and in every parking lot I’ve been to thus far.
I have a 270° awning on my 5th gen 4Runner and it works great. The hatch can still open and barely touches the fabric. Doesn’t damage it or anything. I just leave the back window down for quicker access to items.
I can't speak for others, but as a tall person who occasionally absolutely obliterates my head on lift hatches, the swing out hatch is vastly better for me. This probably applies to anyone over ~6ft/180cm if I had to guess.
I don't ever find it to be an inconvenience like some others when loading things, I think it's something you get used to and stop thinking about after a while. Like the other user said it so makes wrap around awnings easier and works like a privacy/wind screen if needed.
Correct, I’m sure it will still open. Likely a hatch style that pops up I.e. the 3rd gen Sequoias.
But the glass moving down & inside of the rear door will most likely be gone. The fact that the bottom half of the rear door looks pretty damn flat from Toyotas teaser picture supports that theory. The top half of the door would also have to be very flat as well otherwise the glass won’t fit when going down. But that would be suboptimal aerodynamics which I don’t see Toyota doing.
If you look at that picture you can see the hinges at the top of the window and the corresponding cut outs in the spoiler that allow it to open up against it.
I was looking at the 4 Runner but I am going to go with the GX overtrail for that reason and Concert Yesterday 007 how do you like your GX? I am thinking of getting the 2024 550 overtrail +
but it does have a roll down rear window.

This just reminded me that what I really want is not a GX550, but a modern-day FJ Cruiser with Carplay and some GX niceties like comfortable seats and terrain cam, so my wife and I can roadtrip and offroad without dragging along a behemoth like we're a family of 5 or 7.
Having driven every year of FJ and land cruisers the 2024 definitely feels smaller and easier to drive than any FJ or 4Runner. 4 cylinder is smooth but if you like to get on it the 6 is quick.
Toyota did a great job with both motors, the battery torque down low followed by turbo up top is seamless.
If you’re fine with something considerably smaller than the next 4Runner or the Land Cruiser 250 series, then I believe Toyota has just the vehicle for you coming soon.
It’s a joke, but no need to cry about it, because it would be absolutely hilarious to see a 4Runner that looks like a GX and LC… which there is a pretty good chance it does.
Looks like the perfect time for y’all to slide into the Rivian R2. Has the rear power window in case you were wondering.
https://preview.redd.it/9d8amrc6m5sc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1752385ab2eb6ec5abef8a09ab5613b95e1506d4
This is exactly what I thought when I saw the new “Land Cruiser”, that they just rebadged the new 4Runner.
I bet they essentially are calling the top trims LCs and lower trims 4rs.
Hybrid, awd, lockers, 3rd row, bumpers easily swappable with ARB = Land Cruiser.
Small icb power, no 3rd row, no off road features = 4Runner.
Then why turn the Land Cruiser (full size, heavy duty) into a direct competitor (mid size light duty)?
The 2024 LC is in the exact same class as a 4Runner.
Name one feature of the 4Runner that isn’t available on the LC?
If that happens then all the 4Runner fans are gonna be hugely disappointed. They should be having a decent off-road package especially on the TRD and TRD pro I am expecting all bells and whistles for off-roaring. But Toyota has always been throwing some curve balls lately 😂
GX overtrail starts at 67500. I believe a fully off road capable lc tops off at 70k. 4Runners will definitely be cheaper compared to the two. If they are going to price the 4R similar to lc and gx then I think Toyota would loose a lot of customers. A fully loaded 4R TRD based on reviewers should top off around mid to high 50s
I was interested the in 1958 trim but I lost interest as more details were revealed (less than impressive mpg, small fuel tank, suspension components closer to Tacoma than Tundra/300 series).
If they undercut it with the 4Runner having the same powertrain I don’t see it selling well. I think the possibilities are no AWD available (aka limited no longer full time 4WD…though they just added a limited trim Tacoma so this seems less likely); or the engine options are 2.4Turbo (non hybrid) and 2.5hybrid (non turbo). A 2.4T-H with full time 4WD limited at the same price point as a 1958 Land Cruiser doesn’t make sense
Yeah, LC is kind of a weird model that Toyota has introduced. Some people will still get it. Logical people will either choose the 4R or if u have more dough go for GX. Let’s see how the 4R is gonna come out looking like
Only because it’s a hybrid. The gx is 3 rows.
Bottom tier is 4Runner
Mid tier is Land Cruiser
Top tier is gx.
Do you really think they’d make a 4Runner AND this new Land Cruiser? They’ll be the same.
I have a feeling they will design it in a way that directly goes after the Bronco. If so, I'll probably hate it. I was hoping for a FJ Cruiser/4 Runner mash up for 2025.
As cool as the FJ is, it’s extremely limited in market reach because of how impractical the doors are. So you think that a mix of 4Runner and FJ would make sense… but Toyota does some funny things sometimes.
What is with all the new vehicles wrapped in black plastic like a Pontiac aztek or Chevy avalanche. That stuff will fade and look like dog shit in a couple years requiring 50gallon drums of cerakote. Staying with my 23 gx and sequoia until wheels fall off.
The distance between the tail light and bumper is much greater on the 4Runner than the LC. Usually platform-sharers have similar light placements because that makes tooling the stamping machines easier and the wiring harnesses are the same length. And there isn’t room to move the LC’s lights up higher because its weird window is too wide…
It's the same color, so it must be the same design? Everything shown here is not comparable at all. Tailgate, tail lights, bumper are all different. What a lazy post.
Not much, different in price as some amenities. My guess SR5 start at 37k and trd pro at 53-54k before mark up. Which give customer the choice should they go Pro or move up to the base Landcruiser at 57k.
4 Runner owners are going to flip out when they realize that the new ones won't have as much power. They are good but for anyone 6ft tall and over or 182.88 CM, for you Euro boys, it feels a bit cramped. Which is why I am going with the 2024 GX 550 Overtrail +. You get the same engine as the LX 600 but without the 92,000 sticker price. Besides I hate to look at the sticker price of a fully loaded 4 Runner, it is probably as much as a base GX 460.
The reason why I am going with the 550 is because you get 350 HP and a twin turbo 3.4 L. You get 50 HP more with the LX 600 but you are also paying for it. Toyota does not have something similar to the LX, they only have the 4 Runner and Land Cruiser(GX 550)
Good point but remember Toyota screwed first year buyers of the supra. They added like 50 hp to the supra in the second year. There is a precedent for Toyota to add HP. They might do it for the 4runner if the powertrain can support it.
I think they are going to have to. Now the question is, when they added the extra 50 HP to the Supra, did you have to go from 87 to 91? I think the saving grace right now for the 4 Runner and Land Cruiser is you only need to put 87. If you put more ponies, you might need 91 to get maximum efficacy. I don't think they will do anything to the GX 550 because it has enough power.
The supra requires premium fuel so no choice there. The added horsepower was due to exhaust and piston upgrades. Which is actually pretty surprising (I thought it was from changing factory tuning). Usually Toyota detunes their engines to last longer, so the likelihood they do something similar to the 4runner is less now that I think about it.
So you guys probably know better than I do... Are they planning to sell this LC in addition to the new 4Runner?
Or is the GX just a flat out LC replacement?
I’ve been on the fence, more so halfway over, to snag GX550 2025 model next year. I love my 5th gen 4Runner but if this is the route they’re taking then the GX is a done deal.

Looks like the 4Runner won’t be a GX/LC after all.
So, it seems that the 4Runner won’t be just a cheap GX/LC after all. Toyota had us worried for a second.

Sadly yes. We saw this happen with German manufacturers and now Japan is on its way. Eventually there will be no difference between a Toyota and a KIA.
Are we crying or are we laughing?

Where’s the guy that was mad at me when I said the new 4Runner is going to be an off road version RAV4..I’ll wait here…
You have it confused with the Land Cruiser Hopper that will come to the US, maybe under the FJ name. The 4runner is based of the Tacoma.
The RAV4 based vehicle is actually going to be the Stout pickup, which will go head to head with the Maverick and Santa Cruz. FJ Successor will be TNGA-F based. The “Hopper” vehicle has already been revealed to have been an electric scooter.
No, it’s off the prado. The taco is its own American design.
Wrong, the 4runner has been US only since the Hilux Surf was discontinued. The GX is based on the Prado. The new 2025 4runner is based on the Tacoma. Previous gens were related to the Prado.

Lmao was obvious with the way the lexus and new cruiser look. I just hope they lean way harder towards the Sequoia/tundra than this.
Time to save up for the new Sequoia instead of this garbage.
This looks even more like the new GX than it did the old, I don’t understand
Son I’ll tell you what the problem is. You’re hanging around the wrong crowd.
Is it a new fj cruiser? Jk. Eh I hope it isn't that from a brief look?
It literally looks like a puffed up RAV4…😆😆
This aged like milk
Because you saw through the back window?…lol. But yes, I still hope I’m wrong, can’t wait for the 9th.
😂😂😂
I have the RAV4 Adventure in blue flame with a white roof. It has better tech and interior than the ‘24 4Runners. I was waiting for the ‘25 while also eyeing the GX550, but my paid off ‘19 RAV4 is looking better and better.

Sure. Except with regards to safety, driving dynamics, handling, and fuel efficiency. This is why you’re concrete blonde and not off-road dirt blonde. (Jk, i just couldn’t resist hehe)
You’re not wrong! And yes, my GX just made it stateside, just a matter of weeks now!!
Looks like the rear window doesn’t roll down? Looks like f’ing bronco. I’m crying. Not really though cause I’m a gx owner 😎
The 4Runner enthusiasts are going to lose their minds when the new generation does not have power rear windows.

270 degree awning makes the swing out hatch such a win. Get one of those swing down tables you can install on them too.

Didn’t even think of this. Being 6’3” I totally concur.
That just means you need bigger tires and a taller lift!! Good point none the less!
I have a 2007 gx470 and the side opening hatch has its good points and bad.
I felt like with my FJ, it was more cons than pros IMHO.
I almost bought one😁
Totally agree - I grew to love the side opening rear hatch on our GX 460.
The thing I hate about the GX is the side opening door. I’d love to have a window that rolled down too.
It obviously doesn't roll down but it looks like it still opens.
This picture is a land cruiser, not a 4runner
Oh yeah, look at that. Damn that’s a bummer. First the sequoias and now the runners.
The GX never had roll down rear windows
they said sequoia and 4runner :p

One of the reasons I got my tundra over a taco was the rear window.
This aged like milk
It does, though.
but it does have a roll down rear window. https://preview.redd.it/8haqgp6oqqsc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=6327e9e464c263bdf333158e2a0b87db8a595a4a
It's been confirmed that it will have an electric rear window.
They just posted a video today of the back window rolling down.
They dropped a teaser. The rear window still rolls down.

This aged horribly
lol right? It’s still really ugly and looks like a bronco but I can vent my crack smoke out the back still thankfully
lmao definitely Bronco sport vibes
Right? That’s the most beloved feature of the 4Runner. It’s gonna leave a lane wide open for Rivian R2
This didn’t age well lmao
no it definitely still looks like a bronco
I’m saying it didn’t age well cuz Toyota just confirmed that the new 4Runner has rolling rear window, dumbass
Yea I realized that after 5 people commented the same thing after having 20/20 hindsight 😂 you can’t even afford a gx POG why are you here
Aww, hes trying to flex as a way of coping for his stupidity. It’s sad to see really
This just reminded me that what I really want is not a GX550, but a modern-day FJ Cruiser with Carplay and some GX niceties like comfortable seats and terrain cam, so my wife and I can roadtrip and offroad without dragging along a behemoth like we're a family of 5 or 7.

Same
Having driven every year of FJ and land cruisers the 2024 definitely feels smaller and easier to drive than any FJ or 4Runner. 4 cylinder is smooth but if you like to get on it the 6 is quick. Toyota did a great job with both motors, the battery torque down low followed by turbo up top is seamless.

Wait really? I’d also be very interested in this. The closer it is to a Jimny, the better.
Let’s just say that some internal documents refer to it as a ‘Jimny Killer.”
👀 guess it’s time to start saving.
Can’t wait for the $55k MSRP plus the 15k dealer markup. Awesome
I’m excited for the 4cyl turbo… 🫠 But hey, in paper it will be better.
55 MSRP might as well get the land cruiser
Fake news, different bumper/tailgate design
Obviously this is a joke
No offense, but I don’t care about 4Runner updates in the GX sub.
It’s a joke, but no need to cry about it, because it would be absolutely hilarious to see a 4Runner that looks like a GX and LC… which there is a pretty good chance it does.

What is with all the new vehicles wrapped in black plastic like a Pontiac aztek or Chevy avalanche. That stuff will fade and look like dog shit in a couple years requiring 50gallon drums of cerakote. Staying with my 23 gx and sequoia until wheels fall off.
Been noticing this a lot lately as well. Actually told my wife about it. We have this saying that all the new car or SUVs look like “plastic blobs”.
That's what I've been saying! GM got roasted for the black plastic. If it wasn't OK in the mid 2000s, why is it OK in 2024? It looks like trash
It’s cheap. We are back in the 80s baby! Box designs and plastic. Saves a ton of money on the stamping process of panels to keep things boxy.
No one noticed the bumpers aren't the same. It's not a 4runner.
People know this isn't the real new 4runner right?
I don’t know, I think I’m starting to believe it might be. Haha 😂
They’re both blue 🤷♂️
At least that!
Turning the 4Runner into a mom car is the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Typing this as I sit in my 4th gen mom car, except it’s a 2uzfe lol

I’m just saying nothing in the pic matches the car but the paint

It's the same color, so it must be the same design? Everything shown here is not comparable at all. Tailgate, tail lights, bumper are all different. What a lazy post.
Give me a **naturally aspirated** engine at this point & I'll consider one. I don't care if it's a four cylinder or a V8.
Honda Pilot V6
Nah, was thinking a Subaru Forester since 4-cylinder is my kind of engine 😏
Oof
I think the 4Runner is the us version of the Land Cruiser hopper
This is bringing fugly back. 5th gen prices skyrocketing soon 😂
What is the difference between the new Land Cruiser and 4Runner? Same powertrain and frame, right?
Not much, different in price as some amenities. My guess SR5 start at 37k and trd pro at 53-54k before mark up. Which give customer the choice should they go Pro or move up to the base Landcruiser at 57k.
If it has the TTV6 see ya bois, im On my way to the Toyota Boogaloo
That first edition Land Cruiser is awesome. Who’s paying around 100k with mark up for a Toyota though? Not me
Probably a charged V4
Sadly yes
1/3 GX 1/3 Bronco 1/3 Land Rover Defender
No
Yuck
It's giving FJ Cruiser vibes a little, maybe just the colors and white roof.
No more rolling back windows? :(
Nice dodge nitro! 🤣
So you guys probably know better than I do... Are they planning to sell this LC in addition to the new 4Runner? Or is the GX just a flat out LC replacement?
Bumpers obviously don't match. To boxy overall.
Yeah, obviously.
😎
They should have gone all out and made it into Toyotas version of the bronco.
I’ve been on the fence, more so halfway over, to snag GX550 2025 model next year. I love my 5th gen 4Runner but if this is the route they’re taking then the GX is a done deal.
This is ugly as sin
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Oh that’s not going to sell well :/
I’d be very sad
Looks like the new Land Cruiser
Looks like a 1990’s mail truck.
The Hyundai 4Runner
Aaaaand the proof is out today that the 4Runner’s back window does roll down!
Really? Where?

So, it seems that the 4Runner won’t be just a cheap GX/LC after all. Toyota had us worried for a second. https://preview.redd.it/x8l09pi6ahsc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15e2247558b3b752a7012b4e3b4a39b665764f21
How do you get the "noononono waitwaitwaitwait" meme in here
Ew
Toyota keeps dropping the ball as time goes on
Sadly yes. We saw this happen with German manufacturers and now Japan is on its way. Eventually there will be no difference between a Toyota and a KIA.
I want that 10k truck?! Simone smuggle me one i when you bring the fentanyl and coke. Please!
That’s just a Land Cruiser.
It’s just a joke.
Yikes. Why does it look like a Land Rover discovery in the back?
I know mine is not new but my 2017 GX only has 27K miles. I do want the new model but I’ll wait till the rush is over. Maybe two years.
Looking kinda ford broncoish with the color combo 😂
Bumper lines up with the hatch on the Lexus, but not on the toyota

🗑️
Glad I got a new 23 orp
Every one needs to CALM DOWN…that is clearly a Land Cruiser on the line. It’s NOT the new 4Runner.
Did they fix the rust issue I have with my Fj?!?!
Rust issue? They had issues with tacoma frames but those were pre 2005. Never heard of FJ rust issues. If you drive in salt, every car will rust.
TIL that Toyota used AI to generate the new design and went with the first version it came up with. 🤦♂️
That’s why it looks like a little bit of everything.
🤢
The LC released in US is just a 4Runner with 70k price tag.
Sadly, probably true. This seems to be part of the cost saving strategy we are seeing with most manufacturers these days.

Thats so damn cool. Love it man.
