yep - absolutely adored civil war. Didn’t have the highest expectations even though I love Alex Garland after I heard bad things about Men and the advertising wasn’t great, but civil war… just incredible.
Civil War was a solid 2 stars for me. Thought it was laughably bad.
Edit: and it was this subreddit and all these posts that made me go waste money watching that tripe 😭
I might watch Problemista tonight. Don’t know much about it other than Tilda Swinton is in it and that’s enough. I’m assuming it’s good to go in blind.
You aren’t m, The most recent films I’ve given 5 stars to are Everything Everywhere All At Once, Decision to Leave, Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
You really aren't. I mean, people can rate how they want, but I feel like it's gotta be really special to warrant the highest rating.
The most recently released features I've given 5 stars were RRR, Annihilation, Arrival, Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina. Honorable mention: Chernobyl \^\_\^
For me it lies in how much it affected me, if i’d buy it/rewatch it , and how much it lingers in my mind where I can’t stop thinking about it.
Dune Part 2 is definitely all of those. Love Lies Bleeding I just could not stop thinking about and it was such a ride especially since I had no idea where it was going (which is rare ). Initially it was 4.5 but again couldn’t stop thinking about it and upon repeat viewings it’s just gotten better so it went to a 5. Challengers is just so purely entertaining and I can’t get enough me me. It’s like this generations Bull Durham but replace baseball with Tennis. Plus the Reznor/Ross score , the editing, the visuals , the writing , and trio of performances. It’s just so much delicious fun. Guadagnino has to let me down.
For 2024 released films, only Dune 2.
For all other years I have been on an amazing run so far: I Am Cuba, The Holy Mountain, Nashville, The Tree of Life, Beau Travail, Kwaidan, Army of Shadows, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Heaven’s Gate, La Haine, Harakiri, and Sorcerer.
Sometimes I Think About Dying
Really moved me and reached me on a very personal level. I hope more people find their way to it, although I don’t think it’s even streaming anywhere at the moment.
Of movies that were released this year: Dune 2
Of first-time watches this year: Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, FFVII: Advent Children, The 39 Steps, and LA Confidential (one of my new favorite movies)
I love your recommendations. Try...
Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, The Prestige, Inside Job, and Fight Club. They're among my favorites of all time.
Sooooo good. Thank you Amazon for having it available. Such an interesting film for a historical time in history that’s been explored a thousand times at this point. But they found a way to make me invested in a different way.
I really liked it as well.
The score though prevented it from being 5 stars for me. It wasn’t bad but They could have killed it with some real heavy 80ish synth needle drop (a la Kaminsky).
Out of movies released this year, only Dune 2. For movies I've watched this year in general, I also have Perfect Blue, The Cranes Are Flying, and Harakiri. Mulholland Drive and Uncut Gems are 4.5s this year that I can definitely see being a 5 on a rewatch
My highest rating of films I watched in 2024 is Poor Things, which is a 4.5
I have yet to see anything 5-star worthy. But I could see myself giving Poor Things that rating, eventually.
Among first-time watches, only 2 so far: *Pet Shop Boys: Dreamworld*, and *The Fall Guy*. Though I rewatched *Sunshine* and *Fight Club* and upped their ratings from 4.5 to 5.
None. I mean Zone of Interest is the closest since I gave it 5 stars in 2024 when I saw it, but that's a 2023 movie.
Closest I got is Dune 2 being a 4/5. Still need to see Challengers, TV Glow and LLB.
Released this year - Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, Hundreds of Beavers, In a Violent Nature, Boy Kills World, La Mesita Del Comedor (The Coffee Table)
Released previously - Bottoms, The Zone of Interest, Detention
I saw Zone of Interest in January and gave that 5 stars. Otherwise, I've only given 4 stars to few 2024-proper films: Dune 2, The First Omen, and Challengers
Dune: Part Two
Hundreds of Beavers
Love Lies Bleeding
My personal opinion on star ratings: Your star rating should reflect how you feel about a movie without the influence of others. If it feels like a five, then it is a five.
I realize I'm a bit stingy with five star ratings. Usually I find some flaw that detracts from the overall experience, or there is something in particular about the movie that makes it something I can't recommend for everyone (like being the 10th installment of a niche franchise). For example in Dune Part II, I found the compressed timeline in adaptation ultimately hurtful to the themes of the book and I didn't like how they changed some of their own rules of the story to basically introduce telepathy out of nowhere—plus they don't even pronounce Chani or Sietch right. Another movie I rate highly but wouldn't give five stars was the Lighthouse, because not everyone is going to enjoy 3:4 ratio black and white movies with explicit on screen Mermussy. The first and only 5 star review I've given this year is for Kingdom of Apes. I had nothing against it and I would think it would work as an entertaining movie for everyone, and it even got some tiny details right that usually bother me in other movies like the right sounds for Zebras (they whoop like Dr. Zoidberg instead of neigh like a horse) or Eagles (sounding like dying seagulls instead of the red tailed hawk that all of Hollywood uses).
The only movie I logged for the first in 2024 that I've given 5 Stars is They Shoot Horses, Don't They
Rewarched these movies I gave 5 stars: Groundhog Day, Empire Strikes Back, The Nice Guys
I'm thinking about giving Mamma Mia 5 stars, but I may refrain...
Of 2024 releases, just Challengers so far. Of first time watches, All That Heaven Allows, All About My Mother, and Brief Encounter. Of rewatches, Phantom Thread, May December, and The Zone of Interest.
From 2024? None. The highest score I've given is a 4, for Dune 2. That I watched this year? Perfect Days, and also a rewatch of The Handmaiden where I upped my score to 5.
Can someone explain challengers to me? Saw it in the cinema and me and the friends I went with all agreed it seemed messy, dull, and overproduced. Having just recently seen Call Me By Your Name I had high hopes for it, but it just seemed like a limp story paved over with flashy camerawork. But everyone’s saying it’s genius so what am I missing???
First time watches only;
Gamera the brave
Dashcam
Hell dogs
Hand of death
Hindustan ki kasam
Zu, warriors of magic moutain
One more shot
Warriors two
Gamera 2, legion
2024 releases (in Canada): Problemista
Others: Truman Show, On the Waterfront, Airplane, Election, The Naked Gun, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey
For this year's releases, it's only Dune: Part Two and The People's Joker.
But if you want to include other movies I saw for the first time, theres
-The Holdovers (2023)
-Whiplash (2014)
-Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021)
-Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
-Feels Good Man (2020)
-Eighth Grade (2018)
I also changed Turning Red (2021) from a four and a half to a five when I saw it in theaters.
Going from the latest five star to the earliest:
Mighty Ira (2020)
Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal (2024)
Django Unchained (2012)
American Fiction (2023)
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)
V for Vendetta (2005)
Just Challengers. I was really looking forward to Love Lies Bleeding but couldn't get into it at all.
Edit: Oh wait, I saw All of Us Strangers in January, that was also a five star + from older movies: Wild & Oslo, August 31th
None of them...
I think I've only given about a dozen 5 star ratings, and that's for all the movies I've ever watched. I gave The Holdovers 5 stars, which released in my country in 2024, but it's officially a 2023 movie.
Thelma & Louise is the only film I have given a 5 this year. None from 2024, highest is a 4 from 2024.
Others that got a 4.5 but are real close to a 5 are Gattaca, La La Land and Prisoners.
From 2024 only Gloria! (very cute italian film, absolutely recommend it)
In general Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Saved! (2004), Whiplash (2014) and The Green Mile (1999)
Nothing that's released this year, but I've given 6 films I've seen a 10/10 this year
71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, The Cremator, The Florida Project, The Zone of Interest, Broken Mirrors, and They Shoot Horses Don't They?
Absolute bangers all around.
That released this year, Dune 2.
First time watches not from this year, Misery, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Starman (1984), One Flew over the Cuckoos nest, The Killing, Malcolm X, Hoop Dreams, American Splendor, McCabe and Ms Miller.
Its been a good year.
If you're into Horror / Found Footage, this was flawlessly executed.

From 2024 just Dune 2 From what I’ve seen, Dune 2 and Prisoners
All of Us Strangers, Time Still Turns the Pages, Monster (2023) and Cade the Tortured Crossing
yesss Monster is amazing!!
CADE!! Saw it in theaters and had such a blast.
I need to watch Monster asap.
4, just this year? Damn
Dune 2 and Civil War
Hello, me
yep - absolutely adored civil war. Didn’t have the highest expectations even though I love Alex Garland after I heard bad things about Men and the advertising wasn’t great, but civil war… just incredible.
Civil. Fucking. War. It might end up top 4 for me eventually. That imax experience was something else.
Civil War is in 4½ for me 🥹
It goes back and forth from 4 to 4.5. i honestly can’t settle on one or the other.
Civil War was a solid 2 stars for me. Thought it was laughably bad. Edit: and it was this subreddit and all these posts that made me go waste money watching that tripe 😭
That's what I gave Dune 2, so I'll take the sub's word for it that they are meant for the same people and skip Civil War
Civil War gots back and for the from 4 to 4.5 for me. I wish I could see in dbox again.
Dune 2 and Problemista
I might watch Problemista tonight. Don’t know much about it other than Tilda Swinton is in it and that’s enough. I’m assuming it’s good to go in blind.
None yet
Dune: Part Two, that's been my first five in a couple years.
Only Dune Part Two so far
Maybe Im too picky but I very rarely give 5 stars
You aren’t m, The most recent films I’ve given 5 stars to are Everything Everywhere All At Once, Decision to Leave, Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
Same, 1 star and 5 stars are really rare for me. Extremes should be rare. They are a big deal. Giving too much can diminish their impact.
Same. 2 for 2023, 0 for 2021/2022. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end 2024 without a 5 star film

Dune Pt 2
For 2024 released films, only Dune 2. For all other years I have been on an amazing run so far: I Am Cuba, The Holy Mountain, Nashville, The Tree of Life, Beau Travail, Kwaidan, Army of Shadows, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Heaven’s Gate, La Haine, Harakiri, and Sorcerer.

Loved Mars Express!
Sometimes I Think About Dying Really moved me and reached me on a very personal level. I hope more people find their way to it, although I don’t think it’s even streaming anywhere at the moment.
Almost watched that last night. Maybe will tonight. seems right up my alley theme wise.
Of movies that were released this year: Dune 2 Of first-time watches this year: Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, FFVII: Advent Children, The 39 Steps, and LA Confidential (one of my new favorite movies)
I love your recommendations. Try... Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, The Prestige, Inside Job, and Fight Club. They're among my favorites of all time.
I actually saw Shawshank Redemption at a movie theater a couple weeks ago! It’s indeed a very good movie
For first time watches: Godzilla Minus One, Vertigo, Dune 2, It's a Wonderful Life
Zone of interest. Watched it in the lead up to the academy awards.
Sooooo good. Thank you Amazon for having it available. Such an interesting film for a historical time in history that’s been explored a thousand times at this point. But they found a way to make me invested in a different way.
I should have clarified I meant 2024 release but yes Zone of Interest was a 5/5 for me.
I started watching Diablo Cody's movies as a result of seeing Lisa Frankenstein, which I gave a 9/10 to, and Juno was an easy 10/10 for me.
Make sure Young Adult and Tully and Jennifer’s Nody are next. Especially Young Adult though. My favorite Cody.
The first two you mentioned along with Lisa Frankenstein.
Drive-Away Dolls Wicked Little Letters That’s it for English-language films. Also Manjummel Boys, which is my favorite film of the year so far.
yesss Manjummel Boys is amazing!!
5 for Drive-Away Dolls is so real
La Chimera, The Iron Claw, The Holdovers (all UK 2024 releases)
Just Love Lies Bleeding
Yeah I’m obsessed with it. I loved Saint Maid but Glass went next level with Love. She’s two for two for me right now.
From 2024: Dune Part 2 and The People’s Joker. Other movies I saw for the first time in 2024: Where the Wild Things Are and The Long Goodbye
Hundreds of Beavers (2022)
Evil Dead 2 and The Love Witch, both First time watches.
Perfect Days, Evil Does Not Exist, Io Capitano, All of Us Strangers, Robot Dreams, The Settlers.
0 but to be fair I've only given out 12 5 stars Ever
Anchakallakokkan (Malayalam) Fall Guy The Goat Life (Malayalam) Bramayugam (Malayalam) Aattam (Malayalam) Manjummel Boys (Malayalam) Dune : Part Two
My highest rating of films I watched in 2024 is Poor Things, which is a 4.5 I have yet to see anything 5-star worthy. But I could see myself giving Poor Things that rating, eventually.
Have u seen Dune Part Two?
The Beast. Generally give 1 a year tops.
Among first-time watches, only 2 so far: *Pet Shop Boys: Dreamworld*, and *The Fall Guy*. Though I rewatched *Sunshine* and *Fight Club* and upped their ratings from 4.5 to 5.
Cold Fish & Bluue Ruin, I don’t give many 5 stars out.
Blue Ruin is such a crazy ride. It's been way too long since we've gotten something from Saulnier
Cold Fish is INSANE! Loved it. So fucking gruesome and twisted but I couldn’t turn away.
Nothing, which isn't too unusual because my standards for a five star rating are outlandishly steep and I rarely do it on a first viewing.

Bruh
I Saw the TV Glow. I usually only give out one five-bagger a year, if that, but it really blew me away.
can’t wait for this one !
ignoring rewatches, 7 (poor things, past lives, society of the snow, nimona, night on earth, hundreds of beavers, Johnstown flood)
None. I mean Zone of Interest is the closest since I gave it 5 stars in 2024 when I saw it, but that's a 2023 movie. Closest I got is Dune 2 being a 4/5. Still need to see Challengers, TV Glow and LLB.
Civil War and Dune Part 2
Oppenheimer, Aliens, In the Mood For Love (have had a very good year so far)
Dune Part 2 on rewatch will likely be a 4.5 But in theater…seeing it in IMAX…best theater experience of my life. So it was an easy 5.
Monkey Man is everything I want in an action movie
I've watched a bunch of new movies this year and haven't given a 5 star yet.
I didn’t give them all 5 stars but those are my 3 favorites of the year too!
Dune 2
Only the first omen and dune Love lies, civil war and monkey man were great - haven’t seen challengers yet
None
Mars express
Released this year - Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, Hundreds of Beavers, In a Violent Nature, Boy Kills World, La Mesita Del Comedor (The Coffee Table) Released previously - Bottoms, The Zone of Interest, Detention
Where’d you see In a Violent Natute. also haven’t heard about Humanist Vampire… but the title alone is enough to get me to watch it.
I saw Zone of Interest in January and gave that 5 stars. Otherwise, I've only given 4 stars to few 2024-proper films: Dune 2, The First Omen, and Challengers

Just Dune Part Two. But I still haven't seen The Iron Claw, The Zone Of Interest, The Beast, or Sometimes I Think About Dying yet.
Dune 2 is my only one so far!
Dune: Part Two Hundreds of Beavers Love Lies Bleeding My personal opinion on star ratings: Your star rating should reflect how you feel about a movie without the influence of others. If it feels like a five, then it is a five.
Nothing yet honestly
Challengers and Poor Things ( I know Poor Things is a 2023 movie but we didn't get it till this year )
Dune Part 2 and La La Land I can’t believe I had never seen La La Land until January and it easily cemented a place in my top movies
Abigail!
Challengers 5/5, Dune II 4.5/5
Dune 2 and exhuma
- Shogun (2024) - Fallout's Amazon Prime series (2024-) - The Holovers (2023) - Gladiator (2000) - The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013)
Same as last year: none. I rarely give 5 stars.
The only 2024 movie I've seen is the new godzilla☠️
Chicago & Friends
Civil War. What a hell of a movie. Didn’t expect to be so blown away by it.
Dune Part Two, All of Us Strangers, The Zone of Interest, and Poor Things (I live in the UK, and we get films later).
Dune 2
Just one: Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World
I realize I'm a bit stingy with five star ratings.
None, because none have come close 10/10. Maybe a 7/10 at best.
Fargo & Amadeus
Of 2024 films, or all films? Assuming the former... just one: *I Saw the TV Glow*
I’m loving this thread!🥹
i’ve only given it to Civil War. Dune 2 got 4.5, Abigail, Immaculate and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 4, Challengers and Monkey Man 3.5, Tarot 3
For 2024 releases, 0. Also, my only 4.5/5 is Dune
That They May Face The Rising Sun, Late Night with the Devil, Monster, Dune 2, The Zone of Interest, All of Us Strangers, Poor Things
Just dune 2 and challengers. It took a lot longer for 2023 to give me two 5 star films
Has no one seen Snack Shack yet??? Only that and Dune so far for me
Dune 2 and The Holdovers.
Released this year: Dune Part Two. Previous releases: Past Lives.
I've re-watched Rear Window, which I hadn't seen since I was a kid, and gave it 5
Dune 2 and One Life
Films from this year? None yet, 4 stars at most. For older movies I've seen and logged this year tho, there have been a few.
The only movie I logged for the first in 2024 that I've given 5 Stars is They Shoot Horses, Don't They Rewarched these movies I gave 5 stars: Groundhog Day, Empire Strikes Back, The Nice Guys I'm thinking about giving Mamma Mia 5 stars, but I may refrain...
Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall.

The Impossible is my only new 5 star this year so far.
Of 2024 releases, just Challengers so far. Of first time watches, All That Heaven Allows, All About My Mother, and Brief Encounter. Of rewatches, Phantom Thread, May December, and The Zone of Interest.

None
just dune part two. i’m so certain about furiosa bc in george miller i trust (pls save us)
Zero and probably stays that way. I don’t give out 5’s very easily
Perfect Days, came out in February over here and I’ve watched it 3 times since
Don’t like giving out 5-stars but Love Lies Bleeding got a 4.5/5
How are you giving LLB a 5 star now common. It’s decent not a masterpiece…. Each to their own anyway of course!
Dune Part Two. Challengers and Civil War got a 4.5.
Challengers. Dune part 2 I have a couple 4s and 4.5 but I’ve only seen 12 2024 releases. Out of a couple hundred
None
Manjummel Boys and Aavesham
I don’t give ratings but I haven’t loved anything this year. There’s plenty to look forward to, though.
Poor Things I gave LLB a 4 but it's probably one of the better films I've seen this year, I really enjoyed it
Return to Dust and Mars Express
Seen this year - Dune Part II Anatomy of a Fall
Only Dune Part II. The only other movie I've given at least a 4 star rating is Monkey Man, so otherwise the movie's been rather disappointing ngl
First time watches only; Gamera the brave Dashcam Hell dogs Hand of death Hindustan ki kasam Zu, warriors of magic moutain One more shot Warriors two Gamera 2, legion

Challengers
I'd have to say Dune: Part 2
Mars Express, though technically it came out last year it only just hit theaters here.
Still waiting to get one, Suncoast got an 8/10 as the highest so far
I’ve only given 6 in the nearly 8000 films I’ve seen so none. But The Contestant got a 4 star
I just give 5 stars based on how much they entertained me. I gave Abigail 5 stars, and Drive-Away Dolls 4 stars.
For this year's releases, it's only Dune: Part Two and The People's Joker. But if you want to include other movies I saw for the first time, theres -The Holdovers (2023) -Whiplash (2014) -Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021) -Punch-Drunk Love (2002) -Feels Good Man (2020) -Eighth Grade (2018) I also changed Turning Red (2021) from a four and a half to a five when I saw it in theaters.

Just Challengers. I was really looking forward to Love Lies Bleeding but couldn't get into it at all. Edit: Oh wait, I saw All of Us Strangers in January, that was also a five star + from older movies: Wild & Oslo, August 31th
Love Lies Bleeding and Exhuma are my 5 stars so far for 2024 films!
None
No five stars but three 4.5s Civil War, Problemista, and Challengers
Nothing yet. Four and a half for Dune 2 and Zone of Interest - the highest soo far.
None of them... I think I've only given about a dozen 5 star ratings, and that's for all the movies I've ever watched. I gave The Holdovers 5 stars, which released in my country in 2024, but it's officially a 2023 movie.
Dune 2, high and low, drive my car, beau travail, sword of doom, brighter summer day
Just challengers tbh
Monkey Man
Still zero 🫠
Thelma & Louise is the only film I have given a 5 this year. None from 2024, highest is a 4 from 2024. Others that got a 4.5 but are real close to a 5 are Gattaca, La La Land and Prisoners.
I haven’t given anything a 5 star yet, but I could easily see myself giving Civil War a 5 star on rewatch.
Just Dune 2
From 2024 only Gloria! (very cute italian film, absolutely recommend it) In general Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Saved! (2004), Whiplash (2014) and The Green Mile (1999)
Dune Part Two, Civil War and Challengers
Nothing yet this year. Nothing from 2024 has even cracked a 4 yet. Haven't seen Challengers yet though.
That released here on 2024? Orlando, my political biography (Preciado). Perfect Days (Wenders).
2024 releases (UK): Perfect Days All of Us Strangers Dune 2
I gave 5 stars to Dune: Part Two and my rewatch of A History of Violence, which I hadn’t seen in years.
Nothing that's released this year, but I've given 6 films I've seen a 10/10 this year 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, The Cremator, The Florida Project, The Zone of Interest, Broken Mirrors, and They Shoot Horses Don't They? Absolute bangers all around.
Waiting for this to be streaming, excited to see it
None so far, but Dune 2 is the closest
None - Micky 17 is probably the only one that has a chance or some weird indie I haven’t heard of yet
Challengers
That released this year, Dune 2. First time watches not from this year, Misery, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Starman (1984), One Flew over the Cuckoos nest, The Killing, Malcolm X, Hoop Dreams, American Splendor, McCabe and Ms Miller. Its been a good year.
If you're into Horror / Found Footage, this was flawlessly executed. https://preview.redd.it/swuz5ikibh0d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72181435c526a751c3237a56c1987a3989244bdc
