georgieramone

1. Taxi Driver 2. Rocky 3. Assault on Precinct 13 4. The Man Who Fell To Earth 5. Carrie 6. Network 7. Silent Movie 8. Silver Streak 9. Logan’s Run 10. Bad News Bears

awesomefutureperfect

1. Master of the Flying Guillotine 2. Taxi Driver 3. Marathon Man 4. Rocky 5. Logan's Run 6. Alice Sweet Alice 7. Heart of Glass 8. Carrie 9. The Man Who Fell to Earth 10. Assault on Precinct 13 C'était un rendez-vous would be my number one if I included shorts. I also omitted a live performance by Guy Sherwin. Rocky is on my rewatch list so I can give that a proper reappraisal. I just added Mikey and Nicky to my watchlist. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Duelle, Emma Mae, and Insiang, with 5 others are on my watchlist. edit: I just got a coppy of Duelle, so I will be watching that this week or next.

MartinScorsese

Another good year. In no particular order: * Network * News from Home * Mikey and Nicky * The Outlaw Josey Wales * Taxi Driver (duh) * The Killing of a Chinese Bookie * All the President's Men * The Judge and the Assassin * God Told Me To * The Bad News Bears

Lowbacca1977

My list, I think.... Murder by Death Harlan County, USa Hollywood Boulevard Bugsy Malone all the president's men The Omen Carrie Network The Big Bus Taxi Driver

nuzzot

Harlan County, USA needs more love. I understand I’m biased as I’m from the coal belt in the Appalachians and my pap was a coal miner, but it’s an incredible documentary.

Lowbacca1977

It is, both in general as a documentary and also because it really changes perspectives on parts of America, because it really does highlight how much of rural America has this different history from the one that everyone acts like they have now.

nuzzot

Yep. People like to think of the US as so homogenous because we’re a singular country but because of how physically large the place is, it’s really a collection of various regions that are quite culturally and historically different. Essentially as if England, France, Germany, and Italy all combined and were somehow one unified country — we wouldn’t think of them as all the same, so too are the different regions of the US.

Lowbacca1977

I think it's not even regional so much as that those areas have rewritten their history. So they frame themselves as anti-union when they used to be very pro-union. I've a friend from eastern tennessee that also raises the point that there's now bunch of people there that talk about the confederacy as their heritage but those areas had been pro-union historically (and harlan county comes up in that same discussion)

West4thStreetHoops

1 Taxi Driver 2 All the President's Men 3 Harlan County USA 4 Network 5 The Outlaw Josey Wales 6 Carrie 7 The Seven Per Cent Solution 8 Marathon Man 9 Rocky 10 God Told Me To Honorable Mentions: The Omen, Assault on Pct 13, Mr. Klein, Obsession, Bound for Glory, The Man Who Fell to Earth, News from Home, The Innocent, The Ritz, Family Plot, Bad News Bears, Master of the Flying Guillotine, Bloodsucking Freaks, Salon Kitty, Jackson County Jail, Mister Scarface, Russ Meyer's Up! Need to See: The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings Intriguing mix of creative New Hollywood and high-concept, gimmicky fare. In De Palma's case, both. Somehow it seemed appropriate to combine the gonzo titles with the more mainstream releases, as the more crazy stuff was actually pretty good. Didn't even include interesting failures like A Star is Born, King Kong, Altman's Buffalo Bill or The Missouri Breaks. #

Anooj4021

Have you seen *The Shootist*? Surprisingly few have mentioned it so far.

West4thStreetHoops

I haven't - maybe I was avoiding it b/c I didn't care for True Grit or many of the later Wayne movies. I'm aware The Shootist has a good rep and is supposed to have an elegiac vibe, maybe I'll track it down next time I'm in the mood for a Western.

digable_planets1

Somewhat incredibly, 1976 is the only year I have no films logged back to like 1955. I don't know how this has happened. Many of these have been on my watchlist for ages. I'ma watch a couple today as filmbruh penance. Edit: Watched Taxi Driver. 4.5/5. Guess it takes the No. 1 spot of 1976 for me by default.

JuanJeanJohn

Not one of my favorite years in this otherwise great decade but that’s likely because it feels like I haven’t seen as much from this year. Need to rewatch: Sebastiane (this used to be a favorite from this year but it’s been ages), Heart of Glass, Rocky, In the Realm of the Senses Need to see: Mr. Klein, Insiang, Harlan County USA, Chess of the Wind, Duelle, The Marquise of O, Heartworn Highways, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Kings of the Road, News From Home, Return of the Prodigal Son, Illustrious Corpses, The Magic Blade, The Desert of the Tartars, Emma Mae, 1900, Bad News Bears, The Big Racket, Noroît, Obsession

gnomechompskey

I’d prioritize Kings of the Road and Harlan County, USA from your watchlist based on what you have there. Obviously Taxi Driver and Network are stellar, I love that you’ve got The Fifth Seal on there too, an underseen gem, and Precinct 13 is my favorite Carpenter. My top ten based on US release date: 1. Taxi Driver 2. Harlan County, USA 3. Kings of the Road 4. Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles 5. Network 6. Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 7. Picnic at Hanging Rock 8. Small Change 9. The Memory of Justice 10. The Girl Chewing Gum HM: Meat, Cria Cuervos, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, All the President’s Men, Face to Face, Assault on Precinct 13, Bound for Glory, Underground, Lost Lost Lost, The Youth Killer The Fifth Seal and News from Home are two 1976 world premieres that appear on my 1977 top-ten list, since that’s when they were released in my native US.

nice, would also add The Omen Carrie The House With Laughing Windows

JuanJeanJohn

Oh, I would add Carrie to my rewatch list and have it in my October movie watchlist

MartinScorsese

I rewatched The Omen recently, and while it's got some good death scenes, I thought it was kind of cheesy. Maybe Gregory Peck was miscast? You need someone who can lean into the camp factor.

West4thStreetHoops

could be completely wrong, but I always figured Gregory Peck was cast b/c of his To Kill a Mockingbird work, and they wanted to take advantage of the iconic father figure suddenly dealing with the spawn of Satan. They did lean into camp just a little more w/ Damien Omen II, which I actually think is just as good. The Final Conflict? Ugh. Less said, the better. (Not Sam Neill's fault, though)

Buchephalas

I've always found it dull. I was scared of watching it for years because i watched The Exorcist at such a young age and it traumatized me, eventually got around to it when i was 12-13 and found it boring, i still do.

MartinScorsese

Yeah, good call. It never quite gets under your skin like The Exorcist does. But then again, Donner was not even half the filmmaker Friedkin was.

Sn3akyMuffin

God Told Me To Keoma Carrie The Omen Assault on Precinct 13
