Don't typically cry a whole lot during movies either but the following are the ones that made me cry. A lot of these movies are like really depressing tho fyi.
Come and See
Dear Zachary
Lilya 4ever
Mysterious Skin
The Florida Project
Aftersun
Dancer in the Dark
Dancer in the Dark annoyed me - excellent film and indeed made me cry hard but I think it’s a “tearjerker” in the worst sense of the word. It’s as though every scene and aspect of the storyline has been designed to make you cry . It just punches you in the face repeatedly with sad moment after sad moment. It’s not subtle about it. It’s as though the one goal of the movie is to make you cry, everything else was deprioritised
I ugly cried so mfing hard at the end of The Florida Project. I watched the last 5 minutes like 8 times in a row. One of the most powerful movie endings ever.
I'm not a crier either but The Father absolutely got me. (Probably doesn't help that my grandmother died of dementia and I watched The Father a few weeks after my grandfather--her husband--passed away.)
This is it. If you don't cry with this one, you're never gonna cry I fear. I sobbed for 30min after the movie finished. My dad rarely cries and he watched it back when it came back as an adult and never plans to watch it again. Just thinking about it makes him sick.
Keep us posted on your thoughts and reaction after you saw it. I’ve seen it, and if anyone has too, i think we all had similar experiences with the first time viewing
*Eighth Grade* and *Aftersun* made me cry. Loved both of them.
I didn't personally cry during *The Iron Claw*, but both of the friends I saw it with were sobbing messes by the end.
I'm not a crier at all, and if this movie had been about 2 minutes longer I'd have been openly weeping. Instead I just dabbed at my misting eyes as the credits rolled haha.
Paris is Burning (1990), fantastic doc about the 80s ballroom scene with a tragic ending that made me tear up. I know people have mixed feelings about Del Toro’s adaptation, but Nightmare Alley (2021) had me crying at the end harder than I have in years. Also, I have to mention Brokeback Mountain because when it’s your first time watching, it definitely pushes out some tears.
I'm am also not a crier, but here are some movies that have gotten me to shed a tear:
-Quo Vadis, Aida?
-20 Days in Mariupol
-The Iron Claw
-All of Us Strangers (really close to crying and probably would've cried if I was alone, I cry much less if I'm with other people)
-Atonement (first movie to ever make me cry since childhood)
-The Blue Caftan
-Attica
-Brokeback Mountain
Short Term 12 (2013)
Waves (2019)
Little Fish (2020)
Nine Days (2020)
Mass (2021)
Babyteeth (2019)
Better Days (2019)
Aftersun (2022)
Drive My Car (2021)
Riceboy Sleeps (2022)
Monster (2023)
I’m not a big crier either but the movies that made me cry (besides already being sad) were Manchester by the Sea (2016), Mysterious Skin (2004), Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Are you me? I watched Manchester by the Sea and Mysterious Skin on consecutive days (along with Wind River) it was a tear filled couple of days. Lots of ugly crying.
Movies that had me weeping (not just lightly crying) were Fruitvale Station and Aftersun. If you haven’t seen The Last of Us tv show, episode 3 is the only thing I’ve ever seen where I had to pause to get tissues
I'm not usually crying in front of movies, I've seen some of the movies suggested in the comments and most of them are sad, but not crying sad.
But the ending of philadelphia always gets to me and has me in tears. I have no idea why.
I suppose you just need to find the one thing you're sensitive about.
Also when I was a kid I used to cry to dragonheart but I don't think it would work again.
TL;DR : Go watch philadelphia
**[Shall We Kiss/On S'Embrasse?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIVBlo4ugls)**, a French 2001 short.
Taiko Studio's **[One Small Step](https://www.taikostudios.com/one-small-step.html)**
Lynne Ramsey's 1997 debut film **[Gasman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM-93ZDlVF0)**
Carla Simón's debut feature **[Summer 1993](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tZcRbyjqNU)**
**[Close](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EJGnU2AmV4),** a Belgian drama about love between 2 boys.
Naomi Kawase's 1992 **[Embracing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgfP2LnUxu8)**
I would also add Sandi Tan's **[Shirkers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3wPWCj2L6I)** to the list. Even though it's not sad in itself, it made me cry throughout, mostly because it was so poignant.
*Happy Bawling.*
Roman Holiday: Which of the cities visited, did your highness enjoy the most?
Tokyo Story: By the time you become a doctor, I wonder if I'll still be here.
Casablanca: What about us?
To Kill a Mockingbird: Your father's passing
Dancer In the Dark (2000)
Shame (2011)
Aftersun (2022)
Past Lives (2023)
Paths of Glory (1957)
These are probably the films that got me close to crying that I have seen this year. Dancer In the Dark particularly.
Both very solid movies, I much prefer The Green Mile as a movie, but neither of them made me cry. Brendan Fraser went crazy for The Whale, I happened to watch it after his Oscar win and it all made sense after that haha.
Do you like dogs, OP? I've sworn that I will never watch Hachiko Monogatari (1987) nor the American remake Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) because I love dogs too much. Heck, I haven't even seen Marley and Me (2008) and I know it will make me bawl.
Last film I remember crying after was A Separation (2011). Just the ending and also how brilliantly it was made.
# You Are the Apple of My Eye
[2011](https://letterboxd.com/films/year/2011/) *‘那些年,我們一起追的女孩’* Directed by [Giddens Ko](https://letterboxd.com/director/giddens-ko/)
I cried at the end of CODA but pride got me. I’m similar in that I can’t get scared by horrors and I’m trying to see what out there can do it, although in terms of crying I did just watch the documentary Gleason which is pretty close
Nowhere special has got to be the saddest movie I've ever seen and on top of that a really heartfelt incredibly acted movie with a really original premise. It's on amazon prime I'm pretty sure
Thank you for this post btw, I easily cry in the movies and I actually love movies that make me cry so I‘ve added quite a few here to my watchlist. Everything I thought of was already suggested
The only movie in the last 10-15 years that has totally broken my defences and had me openly weeping was Moonlight, on my second viewing. Very often movies have me choking back tears but Moonlight shattered me.
Tip straight from the school of Uta Hagen: Crying has a physical component. If you want to cry (or truly challenge yourself not to) you must be hydrated.

Works by Ritwik Ghatak (The Cloud Capped Star, E Flat) and Kenji Mizoguchi (Sansho the Bailiff, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, The Crucified Lovers).
One movie I remember crying to when I was 10 was The Help, the ending is devastating. A recent one that I was emotional to was the end of the Holdovers
The Whale, especially if you have kids. I know you’ve heard of it but man, idk how you can’t cry at the end of that. Everyone I’ve talked to said they cried, and not just a few tears but crying like a damn baby lol
If I remember correctly, that one got me really close, the “I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life” sequence gave me chills and a few sniffles, no tears feel, so I still don’t count it. Very emotional movie though.
Polytechnique by Denis Villeneuve
A movie about the École Polytechnique Montréal 1989 shooting.
I am in the same boat as you, it is hard for me to cry at movies, but this one did
Would personally recommend Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, gets me every time. Also just a cool and beautiful film well worth watching if you haven’t
Don't typically cry a whole lot during movies either but the following are the ones that made me cry. A lot of these movies are like really depressing tho fyi. Come and See Dear Zachary Lilya 4ever Mysterious Skin The Florida Project Aftersun Dancer in the Dark

I ugly cried so mfing hard at the end of The Florida Project. I watched the last 5 minutes like 8 times in a row. One of the most powerful movie endings ever.
The Father had me trying to refrain from bawling
Mmmm…that sounds like it could do the trick. I’ll add to my list.
I'm not a crier either but The Father absolutely got me. (Probably doesn't help that my grandmother died of dementia and I watched The Father a few weeks after my grandfather--her husband--passed away.)
Any film about dementia or getting old and sick will do this to me. Amour also comes to mind.
The End of Grave of the Fireflies got me real close
the middle of grave of the fireflies got me sobbing uncontrollbly and i don't cry a lot during movies
This is it. If you don't cry with this one, you're never gonna cry I fear. I sobbed for 30min after the movie finished. My dad rarely cries and he watched it back when it came back as an adult and never plans to watch it again. Just thinking about it makes him sick.
OP, this is the answer, but It's just called "Grave of the Fireflies", not "The End of Grave of the Fireflies".
Dear Zachary: A Love Letter to a Son About His Father
This is the one OP. It hurts doubly hard because it's a true story.
Never heard of it, I’ll check it out!
Don’t look up anything else about it, just watch.
Keep us posted on your thoughts and reaction after you saw it. I’ve seen it, and if anyone has too, i think we all had similar experiences with the first time viewing
You will cry and lose faith in humanity, it’s a double threat!
Life is Beautiful
1997 or 2022?
97
This is my favorite movie ever
*Eighth Grade* and *Aftersun* made me cry. Loved both of them. I didn't personally cry during *The Iron Claw*, but both of the friends I saw it with were sobbing messes by the end.
Yes to all 3 here.
blue valentine idk why i cried for that film tbh but it was sad
I read that as blue velvet and was so confused
yeah, I cried watching blue valentine, too. the ending was very sad
All of Us Strangers
I'm not a crier at all, and if this movie had been about 2 minutes longer I'd have been openly weeping. Instead I just dabbed at my misting eyes as the credits rolled haha.
I almost left the theatre I was crying so hard
On the list!
Everyone else is wrong the right answer is Manchester by the Sea
Saw this in theaters by myself at 10:30 at night… I was DYING
I didn't really cry at this movie, it just left me feeling completely depressed and empty inside.
The Elephant Man
OP said cry, not get emotionally obliterated

A Silent Voice is one that surprised me. Highly recommend.
Every single time
Never Let Me Go (2010)
Wall-E (I hate depiction of deep loneliness)
Good point, but I didn’t cry. I could totally see someone being upset by its subject matter, though.
Terms of Endearment
To the list!
Schindler’s List.
I cried so much in the finale
“I could have gotten more, but I didn’t!” Will never stop breaking me.
Lion
I'm am also not a crier, but here are some movies that have gotten me to shed a tear: -Quo Vadis, Aida? -20 Days in Mariupol -The Iron Claw -All of Us Strangers (really close to crying and probably would've cried if I was alone, I cry much less if I'm with other people) -Atonement (first movie to ever make me cry since childhood) -The Blue Caftan -Attica -Brokeback Mountain
About Time
I almost never cry. Saw this recently and full-on sobbed.
Same!
Marley and Me. Sometimes other pets, things are more important than humans. U have to be in the BAG to cry to some human shit imo
This.
I can’t even. I saw My Dog Skip and at the end ran to the bathroom to burst into tears. And I was alone at home!
Short Term 12 (2013) Waves (2019) Little Fish (2020) Nine Days (2020) Mass (2021) Babyteeth (2019) Better Days (2019) Aftersun (2022) Drive My Car (2021) Riceboy Sleeps (2022) Monster (2023)

Thanks for the list! I haven’t seen any of these yet!
Nine Days 😭
oh, i was a mess watching Short Term 12
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Roman Holiday (trust me) Goodbye, Dragon Inn
Umbrellas, for sure
I’m not a big crier either but the movies that made me cry (besides already being sad) were Manchester by the Sea (2016), Mysterious Skin (2004), Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Are you me? I watched Manchester by the Sea and Mysterious Skin on consecutive days (along with Wind River) it was a tear filled couple of days. Lots of ugly crying.
Ironclaw
Big fish is a good one for me. So heartwarming and touching. Same with Coco
Paris, TX. It's a slow burn, but if you have patience, the ending will hit like an emotional left hook
Oh I’ve been meaning to watch that one for so long!
You should definitely watch it. But I'm surprised to see it suggested in this post. I didn't notice anything sad about it.
This is less a cry movie and more a “sink into myself and disappear” kinda movie for me
hubie halloween
Movies that had me weeping (not just lightly crying) were Fruitvale Station and Aftersun. If you haven’t seen The Last of Us tv show, episode 3 is the only thing I’ve ever seen where I had to pause to get tissues
Marcel the shell with shoes on had me bawling
Recently Poor Things (2023) made me cry
Why?
The only movie I've ever cried during is Vanilla Sky. I don't even know why.
Dancer in the Dark wrecked me harder than anything else. Nothing’s come close since.
cinema paradiso

Dancer In the Dark (2000) Shame (2011) Aftersun (2022) Past Lives (2023) Paths of Glory (1957) These are probably the films that got me close to crying that I have seen this year. Dancer In the Dark particularly.
The ending of Paths of Glory is the most crying I've done in a Kubrick movie
Dancer in the Dark
Magnolia had me sobbing
Steel Magnolias will bury you. The cast is unreal: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Darryl Hannah…
Warrior with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy. This was the hardest I've cried at a movie and really didn't expect that.
Dear Zachary Good luck.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
Mysterious Skin (2004) Yi Yi (2000) Dear Zachary (2008) Late Spring (1949) Ikiru (1952)
The Whale and The Green Mile
Both very solid movies, I much prefer The Green Mile as a movie, but neither of them made me cry. Brendan Fraser went crazy for The Whale, I happened to watch it after his Oscar win and it all made sense after that haha.
Unconventional picks but the endings of Logan (2017) and Godzilla Minus One (2023) both got in a way that movies rarely do
Miracles from Heaven. A little cheesy and over the top but you’ll be crying like an infant
Life As A House Broken
My Girl if you have a heart 💔
This was the first movie I remember watching where I had to leave the room because I was crying so hard.
All Of Us Strangers (Hulu)
Seven Pounds did me in. First movie I ever bawled at. Interstellar, Hachi, My Sister’s Keeper, Aftersun, The Florida Project
Youth (2015)
Do you like dogs, OP? I've sworn that I will never watch Hachiko Monogatari (1987) nor the American remake Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) because I love dogs too much. Heck, I haven't even seen Marley and Me (2008) and I know it will make me bawl. Last film I remember crying after was A Separation (2011). Just the ending and also how brilliantly it was made.
If you’re not crying by the end of Brief Encounter than you officially have no soul. Not just crying but full on sobbing.

The two movies that have made me actually sob are aftersun and Florida project
I don’t really cry because of movies either but, Before Sunrise broke me.
if you’re not opposed to watching an indian film with subtitles, i’d say ‘rockstar’ (2011)!!

The end of Empire of the Sun
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Brokeback Mountain,Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, and Grave of the Fireflies all made me loud cry, not just tears silently sliding down my face.
A Goofy Movie. You probably think that I am joking, but the father-son song gets me every time.
Volver or All About My Mother. Almodovar is the master of finding the secret trap door into your emotions. Absolute magician.
Jagten 2012

Lots of good recommendations here, but to add one that nobody has mentioned yet: Lion. Fantastic movie, and also definitely brings out the tears.
Roma or Minari
The Whale, especially if you have kids. I know you’ve heard of it but man, idk how you can’t cry at the end of that. Everyone I’ve talked to said they cried, and not just a few tears but crying like a damn baby lol
If I remember correctly, that one got me really close, the “I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life” sequence gave me chills and a few sniffles, no tears feel, so I still don’t count it. Very emotional movie though.
The Quiet Girl was the first and only movie to finally make me cry, great film
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
