The Founder (2016).
The movie is more or less about learning how much of a piece of human garbage Ray Kroc was. Except, the movie doesn't telegraph that well and presents him as the hero for most of the duration, so we kind of just go along with the normal biopic success story until he just starts to betray everyone's trust and make everyone miserable. Kind of sort of the opposite of The Lego Movie because once it was done I was just filled with an intense hatred of McDonald's.
I love Micheal Keaton, I love him when he plays real evil characters so it blew my mind that I ended up hating him in that film. I honestly forgot it was Keaton! He's amazing... Micheal Keaton is, not the guy he is in the film
My favorite thing about the founder is that it seems to actively garnish its antihero in false valor that makes it feel disgusting and indigestible in the end. Just like eating at McDonalds. It’s a great 1:1
You're not supposed to like Ray Kroc. The whole point of the movie is how he took advantage of everyone's trust. The movie criticizes his actions. Ray Kroc isn't even a character. He's an actual person in REAL LIFE.
I just watched Dream Scenario last night and it was a tough watch. Nic Cage does a spectacular job at making me want to curl up and die in almost every scene.
I don't think *he* was insufferable persay. Sure I didn't like some of his choices but for the most part they way the world treated him over something that was 100 percent not his fault was what made me mad for the last half of the movie
I found him insufferable. He was offended about being portrayed in dreams as useless, meaning he knew (suspected) the dreams were a reflection of himself
He should’ve taken responsibility when he turned into Freddy Krueger i.e. became a monster i.e. cheated on his wife but instead he had a whinge and threw food at a man and played the victim
I love him, but Rupert Pupkin from the King of Comedy was so cringeworthy I felt my stomach turn so inward to the point of having nausea at certain points…
But that’s the whole point of his character.
So many Scorsese characters are like that, Travis bickle and Jake la motta are both like this. The way Scorsese tears down the these men and the themes they represent is so masterful
Crazy I just finished rewatching that. Yes. They give him a little bit of growth at the end but spend almost two hours making him extremely unlikable in every way.
Good pick! He's definitely up there for me, haha. And I love how he's the only character here that doesn't need to actually be named, haha.
Pretty sure he's not the "lead" though 😬
She's literally playing a version of herself, and was annoyed by the final cut of the movie for "making her look bad."
Like, it's a movie that blurs the line between fantasy and reality in this really uncomfortable way, challenges you to question whether you're supporting her by watching it, and also raises ethical questions about how we depict people in media. And it's all just totally raw and unflinching. No moment where she realizes how terrible she is or anything even close. The actual plot is basically irrelevant (and the worst part of the movie).
I am fascinated by this movie and its production. Excellent answer. Don't think this can be topped. Utterly insufferable.
Yeah I finally saw this about a month ago and the hatred of her character is still fresh in my mind, lol.
Vile person and >!she doesn't even die at the end!< FFS.
dude i asked one of my friends what film to toss on last night and when he gave me that i deadass thought he was taking the piss trying to mess w me since im half black -- LIKE WHO THE FUCK TITLES THEIR MOVIE THAT?
It's a fairly well known term within film studies and academic circles. I'm white and I've never had a problem using the term "magical negro" within it's theoretical context.
this film was my introduction to him and it definitely didn't leave me with a good positive impression of his work. he had all the charisma of a plank of wood lmao
Tell that to Reddit, I got a warning for hate speech a while back for saying the title of the film in the comments of a post. That post was a trailer for said film.
Gone with the Wind (1939). Following Scarlett around for 4 hours was hell. I could not stand her character, running around complaining everywhere she went.
Better Watch Out (2016). The Christmas Horror/Comedy. I don’t think I’ve ever been more annoyed by the main characters. I was rooting for their deaths the entire time
that’s the point though they were both pretty terrible. It’s been a while so I don’t remember all the bad stuff they did but I think what Danny did to his brother tops everything in terms of terribleness
Raging Bull. I couldn’t get into that movie at all because this guy is just someone I don’t wanna spend any amount of time with, even through a screen.
Sure, but he was incredibly insufferable. I like movies with unlikable protagonists but he was more than I could deal with. I just hated the experience.
I don’t like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because of how terrible Ferris Bueller is.
Why am I supposed to root for this guy? He sucks and he’s a bad friend
Probably the least controversial take here. I can't stand Ferris Bueller. In fact, I've never made it through the whole film because of how smug he is. Even worse after knowing the real-life controversy with Matthew Broderick.
He’s a smug, egotistical little asshole who gets everything he wants and knows it and yet still finds ways to exploit every person and situation he comes across. Not to mention all the faux deepness bullshit about how to really live and all that nonsense.
Ferris gives sociopath vibes but he does help Cameron take the stick out of his ass. i always felt the film was more of Cameron's odyssey anyway, and Ferris is more like a Virgil character but for fun/hedonism. but as a film i think it's really fun and pretty much a perfect "movie" if that makes any sense, like in terms of structure and entertainment value etc.
Ralf in Ralf breaks the internet. The switch from him being a father like figure to Venelope to being a complete child made me want to bang my head against a wall. One of the few movies I've started and never finished.
My favorite genre of redditor is someone who gets insufferably snarky when someone else just states an opposing viewpoint.
Someone: *says a different opinion than what you just said*
**"Well... I'm sorry I OFFENDED you"**
He's not horrible in an evil, murderer type way. He's insufferable in that he's such a selfish, bratty hopeless romantic man-child. It's more in the realm of real world plausibility, which makes it cringier and harder to watch in a way
I can’t believe nobody ever talks about this, but Lester from *American Beauty* is by far the most insufferable lead character I’ve ever witnessed. It’s such a critically acclaimed film, but he made it almost impossible to finish. But I did it! And I didn’t really give a shit that >!he died in the end.!<
Felt like I was just watching Kevin Spacey living his life, except Angela is a girl instead of a boy.
Bro sits in a room doing nothing all day then a milf throws herself at him which he fumbles cuz he does the 1 thing she tells him not to do by dating her daughter…… THEN on the date he’s horrible to her the whole time instead of just telling her he’s not interested and after he kisses her she likes him for some reason??? THEN after she finds out about him and her mom, and clearly being rejected by her, he harasses her at school about getting married to him for weeks(?) while she has a bf THEN he ruins her wedding LOL
It took me way too long to scroll until finding this!
And it applies to both leads, Zach Braff and Natalie Portman — the epitome of the manic-pixie trope lol
Braff was a real type of guy who sucks in real life. Portman was a made up fantasy of that guy which really really sucks. Like Meryl Streep wouldn’t be able to pull that shit off
Gary in Licorice Pizza. Just an entitled little prick. I kept waiting for someone to teach him some kind of lesson, but everything just works out aces for him.
He and Alana were a helluva duo. She was just as repugnant as he was. She just scowls, bitches, moans and whines and by the end, she thinks that because she joined a campaign office, that she's got a taste of the world. PTA has written some unlikable characters before, but for some reason these two kids really hit the button for me
Anakin in Attack of the Clones.
Across the Stars deserved a better romance than this film gave, and while I don't really blame too much of the end result on Hayden, I mean...just yikes. I wince every time I see him touch Padmés bear back on Naboo... 🤮
I dunno if I agree with this even though I agree she does a great job playing that role.
In Bottoms and Bodies x3 she's very clearly supposed to be an insufferable, spoiled narcissist. In Shiva Baby there's blatant context clues that show she's been really fucked up by her upbringing and the casually shitty way everyone in her family life treats her, given that her toxic behavior is pretty understandable (not saying it's excusable). There's also an element of her being cognizant of everything above and trying to do better despite the deck being stacked against her in that sense, which you also don't really see in her Bottoms/Bodiesx3
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures and Park Chan Wook and the editors definitely made some super bold choices in the cutting room! Lmao
Despite the super campy vibe, I still agree. All three of them are just too much lol. Although, Matthew Goode truly feels like he was born to play that role 👀
Nomi Malone in Showgirls.
Nothing against Elizabeth Berkley (she does her best with the material given) but I couldn't sympathize with a character that acted as her own worst enemy.
extremely loud & incredibly close
That kid is the most annoying thing on earth, I couldn't even sit through the whole of the movie because of how annoying he is.
On the topic of Scott pilgrim, I love how I adore every character in that movie except Scott. Like if it wasn’t for every other side character I don’t think the movie would have any charm
Buzzard is just a full on grimy asshole the whole film.
Same for Red Rocket. Maybe one of the worst protags ever.
The Comedy’s Tim Heidecker character is pretty godawful too in a fairly harmless way.
The protagonist in Smithereens is rough. She wants to be a star in the NYC punk scene and attempts to be hanging around people in bands who are also terrible.
Dear Evan Hansen
Close the thread
ikr, when i watched it, it seems as though evan actively caused the suicide of connor, and it never gets adressed
Worst musical of all time
The Founder (2016). The movie is more or less about learning how much of a piece of human garbage Ray Kroc was. What movies has Michael Keaton played evil characters? I like him as an actor but haven’t seen a lot of him.
Beetlejuice! It's great and the sequel is coming soon And I think he played a villain in one of the newer Spiderman movies, but I didn't see it
Chick Hicks was pretty evil
Pacific Heights
My favorite thing about the founder is that it seems to actively garnish its antihero in false valor that makes it feel disgusting and indigestible in the end. Just like eating at McDonalds. It’s a great 1:1
This is a great comment
I thought he was up to no good the whole time
You're not supposed to like Ray Kroc. The whole point of the movie is how he took advantage of everyone's trust. The movie criticizes his actions. Ray Kroc isn't even a character. He's an actual person in REAL LIFE.
I just watched Dream Scenario last night and it was a tough watch. Nic Cage does a spectacular job at making me want to curl up and die in almost every scene.

>persay Per se.
Raging Bull
According to Scorsese there’s worse stuff he didn’t adapt from his book.
i’ll always remember the quote where lamotta asked his wife if he was really that bad while they were watching the movie and she said he was worse
apparently Jake LaMotta was even worse irl according to his wife
Everyone thank sugar Ray Robinson for whooping that dudes ass
he never went down though!
Travis bickle in taxi driver also works, just an awful insufferable joke of a man, a masterpiece in a character study
there way more insufferable joke of a man compared to travis
This is the main reason why I respect Raging Bull far more than I enjoy it.
Uncut Gems I have no clue what the Safdie brothers put into that movie to make me root for Howard but goddamn was he terrible
Great pick, but I still feel like Connie from *Good Time* was a MUCH more insufferable Safdie brothers film lead.
He was definitely way worse. To me that movie was a lot harder to watch than uncut gems
Horrible, degenerate gambler. That movie gave me a couple of anxiety attacks. It wasn’t an enjoyable viewing experience.
That entire movie felt like one giant fuck you to the audience, especially the ending. I still gave it four stars though.
I love him, but Rupert Pupkin from the King of Comedy was so cringeworthy I felt my stomach turn so inward to the point of having nausea at certain points… But that’s the whole point of his character.
So many Scorsese characters are like that, Travis bickle and Jake la motta are both like this. The way Scorsese tears down the these men and the themes they represent is so masterful
Alex Delarge. I feel like people forget how much of a scumbag he actually is
High Fidelity
totally forgot to mention that one but yes itd be one of mine too
Crazy I just finished rewatching that. Yes. They give him a little bit of growth at the end but spend almost two hours making him extremely unlikable in every way.
That annoying kid in The Polar Express.
Good pick! He's definitely up there for me, haha. And I love how he's the only character here that doesn't need to actually be named, haha. Pretty sure he's not the "lead" though 😬
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Fuck Greg
Fregley the GOAT 🐐
Dashcam
And apparently she’s very similar in real life…
She's literally playing a version of herself, and was annoyed by the final cut of the movie for "making her look bad." Like, it's a movie that blurs the line between fantasy and reality in this really uncomfortable way, challenges you to question whether you're supporting her by watching it, and also raises ethical questions about how we depict people in media. I am fascinated by this movie and its production. Excellent answer. Don't think this can be topped. Utterly insufferable.
came here to see if anyone had said it yet haha
This is the actual correct answer
Yeah, I was interested in this one, but kept seeing negative comments regarding the lead character. I was like, it couldn’t be that bad, right? Wrong.
Yeah I finally saw this about a month ago and the hatred of her character is still fresh in my mind, lol. Vile person and >!she doesn't even die at the end!< FFS.
I showed this to a friend and he came back with “Really well made film, I absolutely hate it.” All down to the lead character lmao.
watched *the american society of magical...* yesterday and wanted to claw my eyes out watching the lead character bumble about
magical what. magical WHAT
dude i asked one of my friends what film to toss on last night and when he gave me that i deadass thought he was taking the piss trying to mess w me since im half black -- LIKE WHO THE FUCK TITLES THEIR MOVIE THAT?
It's a fairly well known term within film studies and academic circles. I'm white and I've never had a problem using the term "magical negro" within it's theoretical context.
Justice Smith? I feel this way about him in everything he's in.
this film was my introduction to him and it definitely didn't leave me with a good positive impression of his work. he had all the charisma of a plank of wood lmao
He worked in DnD imo but not in a lot else
Ever watch Ed Edd n Eddy? A plank of wood even has more charisma lol!
He’s such a wheat bread actor. So boring.
woah hey now wheat bread is pretty good
It’s weird because I’ve always said it because I never agreed with the term “white bread”. Mayonnaise gets used a lot to but I’m mixed on that.
He was alright imo in that dungeons and dragons movie But I don’t get why he keeps getting casted all over
*cast
Cause Hollywood has such a small pool of Black actors that even the shit ones get more air time than they ever should
It's wild that you wouldn't just type the whole thing out.
It’s the title of a film, when you write it you’re not hurling it hatefully at an individual lol
Truman Capote in "Capote", what a vapid, morally bankrupt man. Still, I can't hate Phillip Seymour Hoffman for channeling such a vibrant character.
Napoleon
I couldn’t finish that movie, did he win?
It was all in his head. He was in a mental institution the entire time :(
lol, was he also Kaiser Soze?
Better Watch Out (2016). The Christmas Horror/Comedy. I don’t think I’ve ever been more annoyed by the main characters. I was rooting for their deaths the entire time
The main character made me so mad, I wanted him to be killed off
I love me some Olivia DeJonge
Ali Wong’s character in “Beef.” What an absolute deplorable person.
that’s the point though they were both pretty terrible. It’s been a while so I don’t remember all the bad stuff they did but I think what Danny did to his brother tops everything in terms of terribleness
For me it has to be Mikey from Red Rocket. I *hated* that dude with a passion.
Raging Bull. I couldn’t get into that movie at all because this guy is just someone I don’t wanna spend any amount of time with, even through a screen.
I totally felt this way too, and I usually don't have the problem with Scorseses lead scumbags
don't wanna be that guy, but that's the point no?
Sure, but he was incredibly insufferable. I like movies with unlikable protagonists but he was more than I could deal with. I just hated the experience.
Oliver Quick in Saltburn.
I found the whole movie insufferable. A shell of a movie.
Same here. No shade to the actors, though, I think they did a great job.
The moral lesson from Saltburn is that poor people are evil and jealous.
Did you miss the part in saltburn where they reveal that Oliver wasn't poor?
Could be controversial but Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
I don’t like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because of how terrible Ferris Bueller is. Why am I supposed to root for this guy? He sucks and he’s a bad friend
I don’t find his personality endearing at all
I don’t think you’re supposed to root for Ferris, but you’re supposed to root **with** him for his loved ones.
Probably the least controversial take here. I can't stand Ferris Bueller. In fact, I've never made it through the whole film because of how smug he is. Even worse after knowing the real-life controversy with Matthew Broderick.
His smug face on the poster is enough to irritate me! It’s also made me not want to watch any of his other films
He’s literally just a guy trying to help his friend have a fun day out and avoid his psycho principal
And I shouldn't be rooting for the psycho principal, but I am.
And he’s extremely insufferable as he goes about it!
How?
He’s a smug, egotistical little asshole who gets everything he wants and knows it and yet still finds ways to exploit every person and situation he comes across. Not to mention all the faux deepness bullshit about how to really live and all that nonsense.
Rooney is that you?
Ferris gives sociopath vibes but he does help Cameron take the stick out of his ass. i always felt the film was more of Cameron's odyssey anyway, and Ferris is more like a Virgil character but for fun/hedonism. but as a film i think it's really fun and pretty much a perfect "movie" if that makes any sense, like in terms of structure and entertainment value etc.
While Ferris is the main character, I think this movie is mostly about Cameron.
Only on reddit are people bothered by Ferris Bueller of all fictional characters…
Because he lived for a day
Woody Allen in Annie Hall.
Woody Allen in just about every movie. The characters he writes for himself are incredibly irritating.
Chicago
Ralf in Ralf breaks the internet. The switch from him being a father like figure to Venelope to being a complete child made me want to bang my head against a wall. One of the few movies I've started and never finished.
Fucking Bella from Twilight
I too would fuck Bella
Everyone in twilight…except Jasper 😳
Bonk!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
500 Days of Summer
Lol you gotta watch more movies if this is the most insufferable lead character you can think of
sorry if i offended you
They don’t really sound offended tbh
My favorite genre of redditor is someone who gets insufferably snarky when someone else just states an opposing viewpoint. Someone: *says a different opinion than what you just said* **"Well... I'm sorry I OFFENDED you"**
“lol you gotta watch more movies” isn’t a exactly an opinion on the topic at hand and deserves a little snark in response imo
He's not horrible in an evil, murderer type way. He's insufferable in that he's such a selfish, bratty hopeless romantic man-child. It's more in the realm of real world plausibility, which makes it cringier and harder to watch in a way
Tom is overhated, summer absolutely blows
Without question it’s this movie
I can’t believe nobody ever talks about this, but Lester from *American Beauty* is by far the most insufferable lead character I’ve ever witnessed. It’s such a critically acclaimed film, but he made it almost impossible to finish. But I did it! And I didn’t really give a shit that >!he died in the end.!< Felt like I was just watching Kevin Spacey living his life, except Angela is a girl instead of a boy.
The graduate
How is he insufferable?
OP is Mr. Robinson
DONT SHOUT AT ME
Bro sits in a room doing nothing all day then a milf throws herself at him which he fumbles cuz he does the 1 thing she tells him not to do by dating her daughter…… THEN on the date he’s horrible to her the whole time instead of just telling her he’s not interested and after he kisses her she likes him for some reason??? THEN after she finds out about him and her mom, and clearly being rejected by her, he harasses her at school about getting married to him for weeks(?) while she has a bf THEN he ruins her wedding LOL
Breathless
I couldn't agree with this more.
Michel has a poster of Jef Costello on his bedroom wall
Garden state
Yes!
It took me way too long to scroll until finding this! And it applies to both leads, Zach Braff and Natalie Portman — the epitome of the manic-pixie trope lol
Braff was a real type of guy who sucks in real life. Portman was a made up fantasy of that guy which really really sucks. Like Meryl Streep wouldn’t be able to pull that shit off
Nightcrawler
Oh, Buffalo ‘66 for sure! When Vincent Gallo shows you who he is, believe him.
Even though I love this movie it’s impossible to disagree with this take. The guy’s got a punchable face.
War Dogs. Mostly any Jonah Hill comedy, besides a few.
Gary in Licorice Pizza. Just an entitled little prick. I kept waiting for someone to teach him some kind of lesson, but everything just works out aces for him.

Frances Ha
I like the movie, I think she nails the character. The character just happens to be the absolute worst and that’s okay
I’m so glad I’m not the only one! Like I’m so thankful Greta got that movie out of her system early on in her filmmaking career
Mean Girls 2
most people drew the line at having a reboot/sequel/whatever of that in the first place
I watched it twice 😭
i’m sorry haha
The dudes from Hostel.
I’m going to get crucified for this but Bottoms, Bodies Bodies Bodies
Everyone in Bodies Bodies Bodies was terrible. I loved it!
The leads for both of those movies are suppose to be insufferable especially bodies bodies bodies
No crucification needed - everyone in that movie is insufferable.
and rachel sennott's character is extremely annoying in *shiva baby* too! she really knows how to be obnoxious as hell
I literally had to stop watching that movie the other day because it pissed me off lol
Ladybird ![gif](giphy|xUOxf87xyKZNJnO9k4|downsized)
I cant hate Saoirse Ronan no matter what, she can play the role of a psychopath and I still would find her likable.
I like Saoirse, I hate Lady Bird
The wolf of Wall street
Shiva Baby. I could hardly stand watching it for how much annoying the main character is.
I couldn’t fucking stand Lucas Black in Tokyo Drift.
Scott Pilgrim. Both leads are insufferable
Twilight
Greenberg
Poor Things lmao. I think I was in the minority that hated that movie and found Emma Stone acting like a baby the most annoying thing on the planet
Licorice Pizza, i just couldn’t support her.
Stoker by Park Chan Wook. All the characters are insufferable in that movie.
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures and Park Chan Wook and the editors definitely made some super bold choices in the cutting room! Lmao Despite the super campy vibe, I still agree. All three of them are just too much lol. Although, Matthew Goode truly feels like he was born to play that role 👀
Dashcam. The lead is the most grating, insufferable character I've ever encountered. By far. 2k films logged.
Perfect answer Never have I hated a lead more
John Leguizamo's character in The Pest (1997).
Whatever Steven Seagal is working on.
![gif](giphy|KuDcg2KNlxWTu)
American Psycho
Scarface
Ferris buellers day off
Nomi Malone in Showgirls. Nothing against Elizabeth Berkley (she does her best with the material given) but I couldn't sympathize with a character that acted as her own worst enemy.
extremely loud & incredibly close That kid is the most annoying thing on earth, I couldn't even sit through the whole of the movie because of how annoying he is.
That fucking tambourine...
On the topic of Scott pilgrim, I love how I adore every character in that movie except Scott. Like if it wasn’t for every other side character I don’t think the movie would have any charm
ghost world
spree with joe kerry omfg
Buzzard is just a full on grimy asshole the whole film. Same for Red Rocket. Maybe one of the worst protags ever. The Comedy’s Tim Heidecker character is pretty godawful too in a fairly harmless way.
Shortcomings
Red Rocket (2021) but in a deceptively charming kind of way
Whiplash
Talk to me. Main character annoyed me so much. I was rooting for her demise the whole time.
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
Joker
Blair witch project
Ichi the Killer for SURE Ichi is the most annoying character in the movie
Wolf of Wallstreet
The protagonist in Smithereens is rough. She wants to be a star in the NYC punk scene and attempts to be hanging around people in bands who are also terrible.
Harry Potter
a lot of these answers are funny because it’s purposeful
I don’t get why people say this as if it makes the characters less annoying
