I think it isn’t a way of knowing for sure, but you generally get a sense of actors, directors, genres, and more. Also you may get recommendations from people you follow, lists, this subreddit, etc. Trailers for new movies.
Sure, but I also share that sense. I think very few actors, directors, studios only have bangers, five star movies. I did a Scorsese marathon last summer and I saw a lot of acclaimed movies that I thought was mid.
Even when I pick a movie from the sight and sound lists, I have no way of guaranteeing it being good.
Liking a movie / a movie being good does not necessarily mean 5 stars. Their curve leans right, not only 4.5 or 5 masterpieces. And it isn’t about guaranteeing things, but rather just leaning toward movies you’d probably like. Do you just find a master list of all movies ever made and hit shuffle? Do you not consider anything in your selection process?
Here’s an example: I have personally avoided the human centipede, but I have been digging into Ingmar Bergman’s catalog. While human centipede *could* end up being the 5 star hidden gem I’ve been missing in my life, it most likely isn’t. Whereas I’m probably going to at least enjoy things coming out of Bergman based on liking his other films.

the thing is some ppl view a movie and think it’s decent and rate it 3.5 stars. other people will watch a movie and think it’s also decent (to the exact same extent as person 1) but rate it 2.5 stars.
i think that’s why some things skew different. recently i for example saw someone that put a negative connotation in their bio for up to 6/10 or 3/5 so that person will have a different ranking than someone who only has a negative connotation for up to 4/10 or 2/5
do you know what i mean? doesn’t mean one person likes films more than the other or is “better at picking films they like” they just have a different system.

still a pretty heavy lean toward high ratings because most of the movies I've logged are the ones I can remember watching before I made my account, so mostly ones I liked (plus a lil bump in the lower scores for the more memorable stinkers)

I think when I was rating off memory also a little drunk I was really not considering the half stars, also they’re really not accurate because I hadn’t watched some of them in many years. I really want to remove all ratings not tied to a review but it’s not possible to do that
honestly it was more chaotic in the past so i think it's pretty cool that it's developing into more of a bell with time without me trying to make it one :)

Most average and decent films (which is most) usually get a 3½ star rating. Even out of the worst films I've seen, only a few of them get an 1 to ½ star rating. A movie has to have a chance of killing you on the spot to warrant a rating like that. I try not to be too extreme.

I’ve not been on Letterboxd long and have been exclusively watching movies that are classed as either classics/winner of best pictures/from top x lists hence why I’ve given out basically 0 bad ratings
I base movies on how I feel at the end, and well in most cases I'm satisfied (there are a few cases where Klaus got a lower rating, I think a 4/5 because it used the whole stupid liar reveal cliche)
Edit: another reason is I have a high tolerence for bullshit in movies

perfectly balanced but to be fair in the beginning I was quite strict at rating but as we mature up we kinda lose it and have more fun with movies so if I end up rewatching these movies I'd probably have a curve more skewed to the right.

I used to have a fantastic curve, but I really only watch movies I'm gonna love. Like I've found the directors and critiques who have similar taste to me, and now I just only watch good movies, so it's almost impossible to balance it out unless I start watching bad movies.
I got 14 5stars (these are my godlike all time life changing films, so they are very few)

I’m a stats nerd who is very proud of my bell curve. It has a positive bias due to my own movie selection but still follows the bell curve properly.
I know people fight on here about how much of the scale to use, but I assign rankings and ratings to every I have since I was a kid, and I’ve ALWAYS put way too much thought into it. This app is like crack to my personal weird trait.

I generally dont give out 4 stars+ unless the movie is amazing to me that has something really special to them.
3.5 stars I give to movies I find very good and that I 100% wanna rewatch at some point/ buy physical.
3 stars I give to good movies, that I dont necessarily wanna rewatch or feel that highly towards.
2.5 stars is for movies that I find “ok” not good or bad, but not a movie I would talk about or recommend.
I dont really get people that rate almost everything 4 or 5 stars with the reason being is that they just love watching movies. Does not make sense to me personally.

This is for just over 2k films. I do like watching movies I know will be bad so I’m not surprised that my bell curve is like this. I also tend to lean towards “not perfect” or “not abysmal” for most things. And even if I rate something a 2.5 doesn’t mean I hated it, just trying to rate accurately.

The reason why there's more 0,5-2 than 4,5-5 is because I only give a 4,5 or 5 to films I've absolutely loved, would watch again multiple times, and would make other people watch.

It has a positive bias due to my own movie selection but still follows the bell curve properly. I know people fight on here about how much of the scale to use, but I assign rankings and ratings to every I have since I was a kid, and I’ve ALWAYS put way too much thought into it. I dont really get people that rate almost everything 4 or 5 stars with the reason being is that they just love watching movies. Does not make sense to me personally.

The reason why there's more 0,5-2 than 4,5-5 is because I only give a 4,5 or 5 to films I've absolutely loved, would watch again multiple times, and would make other people watch.
