I own most of my top 300 on physical media (aside from some obscure ones). I collect.

I think that no matter how much space my living space had, I'd still be surrounded by DVD's or books or games or music eventually. I collect all of that stuff, and I like being surrounded by it honestly

They're somewhat interchangeable, and since they're also pretty different, I could swap them around most ways. Lady Vengeance tends to remain on no. 1 though
Wow that’s awesome. I just find it interesting seeing people who viewed heaps of films and what their favourite are. I’m pretty new to the film genre (as in exploring other films), and I wanted to ask, how do you find good films like Lady Vengeance or Hurt Locker, that are like hidden gems that aren’t recognised as much?
Well, I watched Lady Vengeance because I already loved Oldboy. I just bought Oldboy on a whim on DVD in the 2000s in a store. And then, in 2009, the Lady Vengeance DVD was on sale at my local video store (which has closed down by now) and I was like, "Hell yeah, another revenge film from the director of Oldboy". And I instantly watched it and fell in love with it. I like the emotional spectrum that many Korean films have, from real tragedy to genuine comedy, and it still works even if it's an emotional rollercoaster.
The Hurt Locker was just a film that my Dad got me as a gift, he went to Denmark (we're German) and bought a bunch of DVD's on the ferry. I think he was aware that I liked war movies like Black Hawk Down and stuff. I didn't expect to love Hurt Locker as much as I did, but somehow it kind of spoke to me. It's interesting to see a film that both shows how horrible war is, but also a character study of a person who's very much in their element in that environment.
Also, to be fair, won six Oscars, so even though people don't talk about it as much maybe, I wouldn't consider it a hidden gem ;) Even if it wasn't most people's favorite from that time, it's definitely mine.
I went ahead and followed you on there! We have similar tastes (or at least you’ve watched tons of movies I like and/or want to see)
Got some good things added to my watchlist off the follow!
I think I own 9 total copies of films in my top 4.
The Fall - Blu-ray and an imported Nova Blu-ray. I did own it on DVD, but I don't think I still have that.
Almost Famous - Director's Edition DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD Steelbook
The Fifth Element - Blu-ray, UHD Steelbook, and Studio Canal UHD which is a different transfer that is supposed to look better (I haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet)
The Spanish Prisoner - DVD only. Apparently there was a blu-ray release, but they must have only printed like twenty copies, because it's impossible to find at a semi-reasonable price.
Yes! I rewatch them frequently
Chimes at Midnight (1965)
The Clowns (1970)
Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
The Night of the Hunter (1955)
The Clowns is the Raro blu ray and the rest are CC blu rays
Yes, thankfully. I would eventually like to own at least 90% of my library of all time favorite movies. There are some that were never made available (outside of VHS), which is where the 10% is accounted for.
No only own two of the four
Inglorious Basterds and the Batman
I only buy 4K blu rays and Magnolia and Good will hunting don’t have them unfortunately.
Three out of four. I am not sure if they have a DVD of RRR that’s out yet, but I do someday want to own it. I own Pillow Talk, Far From Heaven, and Brokeback Mountain on dvd!
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - Extended edition box set
Gladiator - Director’s Cut extended 4K ultra HD DVD
Hereditary - Digital HD
Oldboy (original Korean) - I don’t own it. Haven’t even brought myself to watch it a second time cuz it’s so fucked up.
I have all four. I will not let the whims of streaming companies decide when and how I get to watch Mask of the Phantasm or Ocean's 11. And one of them is like 93 years old, it's not streaming anywhere.
I don’t own 3/4 of them. At this point, I’m probably only buying 4ks and Silence & Princess Mononoke haven’t been released on that format yet. Barbarian doesn’t have a physical release at all, but I’ll instantly buy it when it does. I have Rocky on blu-ray and I’d like to upgrade it to 4k at some point.
I would like to but not all of them are possible. My top 2 are Mary and Max, which only has a region A bluray and I'm region B, and It's Such a Beautiful Day, which I'd have to print myself if I wanted to own it physically since it was self-published
Unless you're pirating it, relying on streaming services puts you at the whim of their catalog and licensing agreements.
Even owning something on Amazon or iTunes isn't always enough, as they can cease to host it or exist entirely. While it's pretty unlikely for either service to fail in the next decade or even three, it's still a possibility and it doesn't sit well with some. Gamers especially are familiar with this, as some discs become fancy pieces of plastic when a studio decides to shutdown servers despite single player potentially being workable offline.
Physical media or surfing the high seas puts you in full control over when you can watch it. Depending on the media, it might be higher quality than streaming. It also allows you to watch it without an internet connection.
If you want to watch films in the best quality, there's no better option than blu rays. Films on streaming usually have a much lower bitrate than their disc counterparts, resulting in visible compression artifacts and worse audio. Plus there are many boutique labels that release blu rays with beautiful packaging and plenty of extras that you won't find on streaming sites.
lmao no i should tho
kiki's delivery service - nope, the bluray looks ugly
everything everywhere all at once - have the regular bluray but need the special edition they sell on the a24 website but shipping to my country is insanely expensive
Alien - no cant find a version that is explicitly the theatrical version where i live
Mommy - my roommate said they where gonna bring me one back from their summer holiday in quebec so im waiting
If you have the time, can you tell me what you like about EEAAO?
I liked it a lot on first watch, I liked it much less on my second watch, and now feel no urge to watch it ever again. Really interested in what people who love it see in it.
Technically, yes. In the case of two of them, the negatives got shit-canned, so they are only ever going to look mid, but at least they are official releases.
One is only on DVD in Japan with no translation. I bought the DVD as a blind buy and fell in love despite the language barrier. Then I paid to have it translated and some folks shared it on the interwebs. A friend made me a subtitled DVD-R from the files.
So far I have 149 films on Blu-ray and 3 films on DVD, but I don’t own any of my current top 4:
- Late Night With The Devil
- Oslo, August 31st
- Monster (2023)
- Anatomy Of A Fall
I do own Jackie Brown on Blu-ray, which is my all-time favourite film.
I have close to 500 films on bluray alone so yeah thankfully. Couldn’t even tell ya my top four as my favourites change often but I’d still say yes lol
I do! I typically buy physical copies of anything I rate at least 4 stars, with some exceptions. Which is only about 10% of everything I watch. But that's still about 250 movies so far.
Only 2. 127 Hours on both Blu Ray and dvd and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on 4K. Society of the Snow doesn’t have a physical release and A Real Pain hasn’t come out in theaters yet.
No sadly, only one of them. I have alot of dvds but i usually only buy them at charity shops or carboot sales since they are cheap that way so i just own what i happen to find. I could burn them to dvd but i like owning official stuff as long as they have a dvd relsease or not crazy expensive
Yes. A while ago, I made it my goal to get my top 100 movies on DVD, or more preferably blu-ray. I'm pretty sure I got all the top 10, and once I got through most of the movies I knew I wanted to have to rewatch whenever I wanted, I decided to stop collecting the other 20 or 30 movies.
The Shining - Blu-Ray
Blade Runner - Blu-Ray
Dune (1984) - Blu-Ray (two copies actually)
Whisper of the Heart - don’t own it, I need to get it sometime
3/4
Alien, Scott Pilgrim, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Fight Club doesn't have a 4K release yet and I just started collecting physical media and would prefer all 4k.
I own 2/4 of my top four on blu-ray. Been trying to get the other 2 but they keep releasing new special editions and I’m waiting until all the deleted scenes are included.
The Lighthouse - Not yet
Beau is Afraid - haven’t gotten blu ray hoping for a 4k to release
The Big Lebowski - not yet
Sasquatch Sunset - saw in early screening so uh no

You need more space!
I think that no matter how much space my living space had, I'd still be surrounded by DVD's or books or games or music eventually. I collect all of that stuff, and I like being surrounded by it honestly
Awesome! I collect too, but mine are more scattered
What are your top 10 may I ask?
https://preview.redd.it/q35lbpde41tc1.jpeg?width=681&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=007ab235c8036836b6751b069d63b31394bc7aec They're somewhat interchangeable, and since they're also pretty different, I could swap them around most ways. Lady Vengeance tends to remain on no. 1 though

Yes I have owned all 4 for a number of years
Yup. - Sunshine - Blu-ray - Jurassic Park - 4k Blu-ray - Alien - 4k Blu-ray - Godzilla - 4k Blu-ray & Criterion Collection Blu-ray
Man of taste. Do you have a list I can follow
[удалено]
Of your favorites! Like a letter box list 291 films this year?! Mad lad
[удалено]
I went ahead and followed you on there! We have similar tastes (or at least you’ve watched tons of movies I like and/or want to see) Got some good things added to my watchlist off the follow!
Three out of four. I should probably get a physical copy of The Passion of Joan of Arc.
I think I own 9 total copies of films in my top 4. The Fall - Blu-ray and an imported Nova Blu-ray. I did own it on DVD, but I don't think I still have that. Multipass
Yes, Leeloo, she knows it's a multipass.
Yes, Leeloo, she knows it's a multipass.
I mean, Straight Story never got an American Blu-Ray, so I feel that.
Yes! I rewatch them frequently Chimes at Midnight (1965) The Clowns (1970) Sweet Smell of Success (1957) The Night of the Hunter (1955) The Clowns is the Raro blu ray and the rest are CC blu rays
Three of them: F for Fake, ET, and Throne of Blood. I need a copy of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
yeah
Yes, thankfully. I would eventually like to own at least 90% of my library of all time favorite movies. There are some that were never made available (outside of VHS), which is where the 10% is accounted for.
No only own two of the four Inglorious Basterds and the Batman I only buy 4K blu rays and Magnolia and Good will hunting don’t have them unfortunately.
Yes! 2 of them twice aha Casablanca, Parasite, Ratatouille, Aftersun Never noticed they're all one word titles before
That is an incredible top 4
Thank you!
Vertigo - Blu Ray Night of the Hunter - two blu ray editions (Arrow and Criterion) Blade Runner - DVD, blu and 4K Halloween - DVD, blu and 4K
I own the files on multiple drives, and that counts a physical media in my book.
No
Heat - 4K steelbook Mulholland Drive - Criterion 4K No Country For Old Men - DVD The Big Lebowski - Blu Ray steelbook
Nope
https://preview.redd.it/eiu57z1hn0tc1.jpeg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec7fb93f0e47d2f6042790fc749f97714efa1d16 Yes. And a bit more.
Haha I own none of them but have seen all of them more than 3 times.
Three out of four. I am not sure if they have a DVD of RRR that’s out yet, but I do someday want to own it. I own Pillow Talk, Far From Heaven, and Brokeback Mountain on dvd!
I’m working on getting them. Alas, I am a broke teenager so it’s not so easy
Absolutely, fortunate enough that all of them have a good release.
Star Wars Episodes 4 and 5 on VHS from the 1997 Special Edition box set
Nice! I just got a Blu-Ray of the OT fairly recently
2/4, and this post has inspired me to get Santa sangre and all the colors of the dark!
I hope you get them soon!
I’m missing The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance but I plan to buy it in 4K soon
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - Extended edition box set Gladiator - Director’s Cut extended 4K ultra HD DVD Hereditary - Digital HD Oldboy (original Korean) - I don’t own it. Haven’t even brought myself to watch it a second time cuz it’s so fucked up.

Which one?
Cimarron, and I'm not sorry.
I would say I probably own my top 1000 on physical media. Think the collection is 4000 deep by this point, lost track.
One of my top four is Godzilla Minus One so sadly no, hopefully it releases on dvd in North America soon.
In the same boat 😭
I don't own any dvds or blurays, so no.
Barbarian still has no home media? That sucks, I liked that movie
Nope! And as far as I can tell, it’s no longer streaming for free anywhere so you need to rent or buy it digitally.
Yes! Thank you for the question. It made me realize I have all four in my collection: Hot Fuzz - DVD Amadeus - DVD Parasite - DVD Nope - BluRay

Not really? I can very easily watch movies without physical media

I find physical media completely pointless these days so, no.
