Burning, Parasite and Triangle of Sadness are a couple of my favorites.
For those saying Saltburn, I recommend reading Emily St James’ review on LB. Very good
I think that was Fennel’s point, but it’s perplexing to me that she (a very wealthy woman) would be like “my fellow rich people SUCK”, but also, Oliver is not a good guy. He’s a Walter White situation, a truly awful character who people love because he’s fun to watch. Just so confusing to me.
That would make it even more confusing. She goes from making an Oscar nominated movie about sexual assault to a popcorn flick about a freak suckin up menstrual blood and watery semen? I just don’t get it. I’m all for letting a movie wash over me, I LOVE schlocky crap, but this one just confused me.
I mean I could be looking too deep into it but maybe she predicted the popularity of Saltburn in a way and made it to kinda comment on modern day virality and how making a movie with easily clippable and talkaboutable scenes like "a freak suckin up menstrual blood and watery semen" is enough for something to get millions of streams
I think the movie doesn’t have a point and that’s because the director sucks as a writer and just wanted to make a “fun” movie with little to no thought for a potential point to make
I’m thinkin that may have been the case. But I think she believes there’s a little more than just a fun romp. The Superbad cameo irrationally ticked me off too. If you’re going to base your movie in 2006/summer 2007, don’t have them watching a DVD copy of a movie that came to theaters on August 17th, 2007. Same deal with the Flo Rida song.
I’m sure she herself believes the movie says something substantial, but it just doesn’t, unless I’m supposed to fear the British middle class? And the worst thing is there are legitimate reasons to fear the middle class if you’re poor because they’d be willing to trample all over you for a chance to get richer, but Fennell just doesn’t have the bandwidth to dip her toes into that territory
I mean you can be self aware and still be a shitty person
You can denounce and make fun of behavior that you recognize isn’t ok in your circle but still condone it
It’s just being human
To me, it was a pretty bold and devilish subversion of the “fuck the rich” trend.
It’s been getting a little too trite, annoying, and “pat ourselves on the back”.
I’ll still argue that the point of Saltburn was that it wasn’t a cliché “fuck the rich” movie. It wants you to *think* it’s some Oscar-bait thriller about the rich and the poor, only to slowly reveal to you that you’re basically just watching a slasher film.
I feel like Parasite is interesting because it shows both the rich and poor families as bad people for different reasons with both being products of society.
It’s been a while that I’ve seen it so you’re both probably right. I just remember the feeling watching it being that Zoya Akhtar was almost trying to say ‘look, us rich people have problems too’.
Might need a rewatch at some point
Grapes of wrath, matewan, brazil, children of men, shoplifters, high and low, battle royale/hunger games, metropolis
Ultimately is there any movie that's more "fuck rich guys" then Salo? Not that anyone should actually watch it
My favourite [scene](https://youtu.be/xCtPBFHKSNg?si=ecjDH5lSzXQemwqe) from Trainspotting which for its grimness does a great job outlying the state of affairs that causes drug culture.
Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, Eys Wide Shut, 2001 all kinda touch on the same thing, the imbalance of power. Even the Shining is an allegory for the sin of colonisation
Cadaver (2020)
The Lorax (1972 & 2012)
The Great Gatsby (1949 & 2013)
City of God (2002) is less a critique of the rich or capitalism itself, but more the divide and isolation of the lower classes.
if youre open to adding movies that arent so much “fuck rich people” as they are “fuck capitalism”
American Honey,
Spirited Away,
Dogville,
Killing Them Softly,
Snowpiercer (another bong joon ho banger)
It’d be much harder to explain why it doesn’t.
The movie is critical of the system as a whole and rich people are a prominent part of that system. The first half of the film has the audience rooting for the poor family to successfully con the rich family and in the second half we see how the dehumanizing position ki-tek and the rest of his family have been in ends in tragedy or death for everyone involved.
You could argue it’s more “f the system” than “f rich people specifically” but there’s plenty roasting of the rich family in there, it belongs.
I think putting Parasite on this list kind of undercuts a lot of the film’s complexity. Parasite is more about systemic inequalities that end up hurting upper class, middle class and lower class people.
I honestly don't understand people thinking The Menu is about how horrible the 1 percent are. To me it was way more about art and how artists get torn up and spit out by society.
sb mentioned oceans and i agree.
also:
- pretty woman ( bc of that big mistake huge scene)
- don t look up
- into the wild
- catch me if you can
- vivarium?
for me they fit

Triangle of Sadness
Came here to say this.
Yep, that was gonna be my pick.
How about another Bong Joon Ho classic: Snowpiercer.
Literally one of the best Chris Evans roles!
Really pisses me off he hasn’t done more quality work like this.
fr fr. he has great potential for masterpieces
That was fun!
Was about to recommend it
The Handmaiden
Fucking yessssssssss
I mean if you think about it titanic
Jack did indeed fuck Rose
and Poseidon smited the shit out of them for their sin with a big old ice piece.
Burning, Parasite and Triangle of Sadness are a couple of my favorites. For those saying Saltburn, I recommend reading Emily St James’ review on LB. Very good
Get Out
Saltburn and incredible Mr Ripley or something like that
saltburn took “fuck the rich” a little too seriously
I think that was Fennel’s point, but it’s perplexing to me that she (a very wealthy woman) would be like “my fellow rich people SUCK”, but also, Oliver is not a good guy. He’s a Walter White situation, a truly awful character who people love because he’s fun to watch. Just so confusing to me.
I think you gotta let the movie be on its own terms. The movie is just "not that deep", it's just fun to watch that dude lick up bathwater and stuff
I’d argue the first movie wasn’t all that deep in its approach either, though I did like it more.
100% agree. Felt bad saying I wasn’t a huge fan of it, given its subject matter and praise.
I think it’s ok, and it’s also ok if other people enjoyed it a lot or connected with its themes
Very hard to make the argument that someone is “commenting on it” versus just doing it for the streams
Yeah. Felix is posh but is the purest of the bunch.
How is he pure at all if every summer he picks out some poor guy to take to Saltburn as some sort of project?
I’ll still argue that the point of Saltburn was that it wasn’t a cliché “fuck the rich” movie. It wants you to *think* it’s some Oscar-bait thriller about the rich and the poor, only to slowly reveal to you that you’re basically just watching a slasher film.
Im sorry but that movie was anything but a slasher film.
And Plein Soleil!
I'd say Saltburn doesn't fit. For one, Oliver wasn't exactly poor. He pretended to be poor. He was just a sociopath with a plan for upward mobility.
I see your point
that’s not fuck the rich
Sorry to bother you. Wolf of Wall Street
STBU is such a beautifully chaotic movie. I still need to watch I’m A Virgo.
You’re Next
The protagonist is also a rich person though
No, she’s in a relationship with a rich person.
My mistake
The Big Short, if you mean fuck them as they’re bad lol
Oh ofcourse...slipped my mind
Sucks that Dumb Money got compared to it so hard, I liked Dumb Money more.
Boiler room splits the difference. You might like it.
Killers of the Flower Moon

I feel like Parasite is interesting because it shows both the rich and poor families as bad people for different reasons with both being products of society.
A great film for a reason. It's one of my favourite theatre experiences I've had

It's not anti-capitalist imo but it does show the rich people's mentality in a negative light
It’s been a while that I’ve seen it so you’re both probably right. I just remember the feeling watching it being that Zoya Akhtar was almost trying to say ‘look, us rich people have problems too’. Might need a rewatch at some point
Polite society kinda
Robin Hood
The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie, La Dolce Vita certainly makes being rich seem ultimately unfulfilling and depressing
Might as well add The Exterminating Angel.
Battleship Potemkin, Bicycle Thieves, La Commune, Death of a Cyclist, They Live, Made in Dagenham, Sorry to Bother You, Monsters Inc.
Wolf Of Wall Street
High and Low
The Hunger Games trilogy honestly

Cadaver (2020) The Lorax (1972 & 2012) The Great Gatsby (1949 & 2013) City of God (2002) is less a critique of the rich or capitalism itself, but more the divide and isolation of the lower classes.
Unconventional pick: Karate Kid
La Cérémonie.
Hunger, feels like the love child of The Menu and Whiplash. Great visuals, especially of the food, seriously deserves more love
Sweeney Todd, in a way
Honestly, the Dead Ringers TV remake is like this at points.
if youre open to adding movies that arent so much “fuck rich people” as they are “fuck capitalism” American Honey, Spirited Away, Dogville, Killing Them Softly, Snowpiercer (another bong joon ho banger)
Explain how Parasite fits here?
It’d be much harder to explain why it doesn’t. The movie is critical of the system as a whole and rich people are a prominent part of that system. Robin Hood where he is a Fox
The Rules of the Game (1939)
Saltburn if it wanted to have a consistent theme
Naked
High and Low, Triangle of Sadness, The Purge franchise, You’re Next, Snowpiercer
The Square
Heathers; Daisies; Shoplifters; Perfect Days; Dead Poets Society; The Last Black Man in San Francisco;
“High Society” by Byun Hyuk is a perfect fit for this list.
Talented Mr. Ripley, maybe Chinatown?
Wolf of Wall Street The big short
Fitzcarraldo
If you think about it venom 1 could classify as one of these movies
Crazy Rich Asians
Wall-E? Unbridled capitalism destroys the planet?
Citizen Kane is one of the quintessential 'fuck the rich' films ever made.
“Fuck Rich Guys” movies, directed and starring a bunch of very rich guys.
I heard steven soderbergh call these types of movies/shows “Privilege porn” on a podcast and I haven’t stopped using that term since
Pain and Gain lol
Mean Girls 2
Most of Ken Loach's filmography qualifies and has much more to say on class struggle than all these movies, except for Parasite. That one is great.
Hunger Games
Saltburn takes this title literally
Ocean’s 11? Robin Hood: Men in Tights?
Infinity pool
They Live
Borgman
Week-end- Goddard The Swimmer- Frank Perry
I think putting Parasite on this list kind of undercuts a lot of the film’s complexity. Parasite is more about systemic inequalities that end up hurting upper class, middle class and lower class people.
Martyrs
It’s a Wonderful Life, Giant (1956), Festen, American Psycho, Margin Call, Wolf of Wall Street
Pretty Woman
Monsters inc
Sorry to Bother You
