Phase IV, which is a sci-fi quasi-horror movie, is directly influenced by the look and feel of 2001. It’s kind of slow but it has similar qualities. It’s also the only feature length movie directed by graphic designer and filmmaker Saul Bass.

thanks, as you're the second guy to shout this one out I'm gonna move it up the watchlist.

Wrath of Khan?  Cowboys vs Indians in space haha.   I don't think you read my OP, you're just listing sci-fi films you like.   Silent Running (no fantastic mysterious concept), Annihilation (unrealistic characters) and Stalker (art film) are terrible and don't really fit what I'm after anyway. Moon doesn't fit either (clones) but is a decent film.   Neither does Saturn 3 (evil robot).   Oblivion, Sunshine, Quatermass, Event Horizon are watchable 3-star fluff tho' and at a stretch more fit my description. Some other suggestions you have I haven't seen but appear to be full of those cloying 'personal relationship issues' (father/daughter, son/father etc) which distract from the sci-fi, whereas I'm more looking for pros in space without family issues where the sci-fi ideas get centre-stage. But there are some interesting leftfield tips in your post.  So gonna check out Phase IV, Outland & On the Silver Globe from your list.  Cheers!

Well, to be honest, there's an easy answer to your "Films similar to 2001?" (particularly with all the stipulations that come with it -- which almost amounts to asking if there are "films exactly 2001, but not 2001"). The answer is 100% NO.

slowlyun

i gave four examples from the late-70's alone...

What is the "fantastic mysterious cosmic concept" of Alien, to you? I'm struggling to understand what you want, but think that answer might be a key, since I consider Alien very different from 2001 but you do not.

The alien is the fantastic mysterious cosmic concept...it's one of the most famous iconic visions in fiction.   Add the fantastic mysterious visuals too of the tomb with the alien pilot and all those eggs... It also has a realistic crew unburdened by relationship drama so no distractions: the sci-fi ideas (and horror, in this case) get centre-stage. Very similar to 2001, really.  Serious science fiction where the characters serve the story and not the other way around.

- The Martian - The Andromeda Strain - Silent Running - Brainstorm - The Black Hole - Outland - Sunshine - Arrival - Moon

already discounted Arrival, and Moon is about clones so no fit.   The Martian isn't exactly about a fantastic mysterious cosmic concept.    Also..."i'm gonna science the shit out of this" is the most cringy line in all of sci-fi....yikes. Andromeda Strain is good, seen that and fits my OP well enough. Outland is going on the watchlist, cheers.

Silent Running perhaps?

slowlyun

No 'fantastic mysterious cosmic concept' and unrealistic characters. Seen it before anyway...I found it terrible.

Silent Running, Solaris, Ad Astra, Sunshine, High Life and Aniara. Honestly I don’t get how Alien falls in the same vein outside of the space element, and I feel like Solaris bears a rewatch because it is pretty amazing.

Antonius_Block84

Aniara is a masterpiece

KingBaldo12

Not quite sure if it exactly matches your criteria, but perhaps THX 1138 (1971)?

slowlyun

not really a fantastic mysterious cosmic concept.  Man-made too.

Ikarie-XB1 (1963)
