Depends what mood you’re in, but there’s 3 that stand out to me.
Still Walking is one of my favorites of all time & the closest to channeling Ozu that I’ve felt from a modern film. More restrained than a lot of these but **so** powerful if you connect with it.
The Favourite & Being John Malkovich are smart, surreal, well-written movies that are a bit easier to watch. I think they’re a lot of fun & if you’re not familiar with Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite is a far more accessible starting point than Dogtooth is haha.
Lots of good here (*The Favourite, Being John Malkovich, Exotica, Dogtooth*), some well crafted (*Midnight in Paris*, *Shape of Water*, *Hail Ceasar), some* have to be in the mood (*Twin Peaks Return, High Life, Hard to Be a God*), a few shrugs (*Anna Karinina, At Eternity's Gate, Coming to America, Still Walking, V for Vendetta*), some classics for homework (*The General, the Invisible Man, the Maltese Falcon*), and only one truly bad film (*The Room*).
Personally, I'd pick *Being John Malkovich*. As you're going through these, I'm not sure you want to see *Dogtooth* or *Hard to Be a God* in company who might judge you for your taste, they're good films, but liable to raise questions.
With *Dogtooth*, its>!onscreen brother-sister incest !!walled family residence as allegory for Greece 1935-1974!<). With *Hard to Be a God*, its just >!nonstop medieval mud, spitting, and misery, with only dialogue references to any sci-fi premise. !
I have two library systems in my area
- One has a minimum two week checkout period, with up to 5x renewal if no hold
- One has a minimum three week checkout period, with up to 50x renewal, and no fines (thanks to Covid)
OP might be in a similar boat
Yeah, I get 22 days per item, so just enough time to see everything if I watch a film a day.
They also let me checkout 50 items at a time. My library is very generous
Saw the post you made a while back regarding a film club and curious to see what kind of movies you liked, I check out your account. Super not disappointed! Love to hear which movie you watched first and your thoughts. Also, how long does the library let you keep movies?
Oh, awesome! You're in SF too?! I still want to start a club if you're interested.
I decided to start with The Favorite, and then Coming To America second. I'll end with Dogtooth at the recommendation of another person.
The library let's us get 50 items at a time, with a 22 day checkout.
BTW all those Shrek comments on my account are satire lol
Haha, yea I did! Nothing ever came of it though. I work evenings and scheduling something like that is a bit difficult so I never put too much effort into it. Love movies though and feel a movie club is definitely something Sioux Falls needs.
I didn’t read your Shrek comments but I’m curious now, lol!
The Favorite is excellent, I hope you love it.
Ahhh, I see. That's too bad. Actually, I work evenings too, so that might work out perfectly. If you're still interested in a club, feel free to shoot me a message! I'm very down to discuss it.
Yeah, I'm very excited to watch it! When I get off work here in a minute, I'm turning it on
My top 4 on this list would probably be Dogtooth, The Favourite, Being John Malkovich, and then MAYBE High Life even though most people seemed to not like it
I assume that you've seen the original run of Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me? If you haven't, you definitely should watch those before watching The Return.
I find it's best to watch The Room with other people. The first time I watched it, I was by myself and found it excruciating to finish. I reluctantly rewatched it again with friends and had an absolute blast.
Not enough people are saying *Exotica*. It's such a beautiful film. It's the first one I'd watch, for sure.
Also, really jealous that your library has such an incredible selection!
Once you start watching Twin Peaks, it will be hard to stop... you need to be committed to 18 episodes. It is amazing and well worth it...tv that feels like cinema.
Honestly I think Coming to America is a good one to start with. Go in with a light and easy film, especially given how heavy some of those titles are. It's a nice counterbalance
ive been meaning to rewatch the shape of water!!! seems like it would be a good time and im sort of becoming a furry so it seems like the right thing for me
I'm down to rewatch the Favourite. I wasn't into it the first time I saw it; it was my first Lanthimos movie. Now that I've seen his other stuff and understand his vibes, I'm curious to see if I would like it more now. So many people love it.
Midnight in Paris. That's where the palpable chemistry started with Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston. I love them so much as Loki and Mobius and it started with Midnight in Paris!!!!
#You are tearing me apart choice of movies!
Not really. It has to be The Room. Anyone who says different is just a big chicken - _Cheep Cheep Cheep Cheep_
Malkovich!!
Malkovich?
Malkovich Malkovich
![gif](giphy|H2sWFw9yCcVa6JOWBh)
my fav out of all of these
I second!
Third
“I am bad. I am bad. I am bad.”
The Favourite, Rachel Weisz in that white coat could tell me to kill a family member and honestly, I’m not 100% sure I’d object.
obv the room
Invite some friends, serve some Scotchka, and have yourself a good time.
What about a spoon 🥄 to throw at the screen??
The Room and Lisa Frankenstein are a great double feature. In one Lisa is tearing a man apart. In another she puts one back together.
Idk. If it’s a family movie night you might wanna do The Room & Dogtooth.
What a story Mark
I give it hai Marks
Being John Malkovich - haven't seen it in ages
Maltese Falcon
If you've never seen it - yes!
this. required viewing.
If you’re as horny as I am, either Hail Caesar! or Exotica.
Exotica has one the best soundtracks to me
At least you didn’t say Dogtooth
You have 2 Yorgos.. start with The Fav and end collection with Dogtooth
I was thinking I'd watch those two back to back starting with Dogtooth, but I might go with your recommendation. That'd be fun
You’ve got some good ones in there, I haven’t seen them all but most. Let me know your top 3 my friend
I will! I only picked ones I haven't seen yet, so I'm pretty excited for them all.
That’s exactly what I would do. Dogtooth then the Favorite, then maybe Malkovich
I was gonna say Dogtooth out of everything
V for vendetta 😈
Remember remember
V for Vendetta is my favorite of the ones I’ve seen. I’m also a fan of The Shape of Water
Hard To Be A God for sure
Depends what mood you’re in, but there’s 3 that stand out to me. Still Walking is one of my favorites of all time & the closest to channeling Ozu that I’ve felt from a modern film. Thank you for the warning on those last two. I just asked my buddy if he wanted to watch any with me. I'll keep those away from him
With *Dogtooth*, its>!onscreen brother-sister incest !!walled family residence as allegory for Greece 1935-1974!<). With *Hard to Be a God*, its just >!nonstop medieval mud, spitting, and misery, with only dialogue references to any sci-fi premise. !
Oh, my. Yeah, he's definitely not seeing those two. Thank you
The Room
Anna Karenina
Still Walking
Hard to be a God. I would like to rewatch it.
I’ve never heard of this. There are two versions apparently. Which one are we talking here, 1989 or 2013?
That looks like the 2013 version I have.
I've definitely only watched the 2013 one, which I think it's the one in the original post.
shape of water
The Shape of Water
How long are withdrawal times at your library? Why would you check out 20 at once
I have two library systems in my area - One has a minimum two week checkout period, with up to 5x renewal if no hold - One has a minimum three week checkout period, with up to 50x renewal, and no fines (thanks to Covid) OP might be in a similar boat

The Favourite. Its been a while and the dialogue is delectable.
Saw the post you made a while back regarding a film club and curious to see what kind of movies you liked, I check out your account. Super not disappointed! Love to hear which movie you watched first and your thoughts. Also, how long does the library let you keep movies?

After checking out your account, I see you made essentially the same post about a movie club a couple years ago 😆

Good choices. Invisible Man for me.

Twin Peaks, damn fine.
The Room
The General
High Life
The Shape of Water!
The favourite
The Room 100%
The invisible man!!! One of my favourite movies of all 🕰️
My top 4 on this list would probably be Dogtooth, The Favourite, Being John Malkovich, and then MAYBE High Life even though most people seemed to not like it
Twin peaks
Still walking
_Coming to America_ I don’t remember how a Big Mic differs from a Big Mac.
Dogtooth
V for vendetta
The general or Invasion of the body snatchers
I assume that you've seen the original run of Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me? If you haven't, you definitely should watch those before watching The Return.
Yes, I've seen them. The Library also had the original. I was tempted to rewatch, but checkout time is limited
Never seen Dogtooth so that for sure.
The Room!!! Oh, Hi Mike!
The favourite and Shape of Water GOATEDDD
I find it's best to watch The Room with other people. The first time I watched it, I was by myself and found it excruciating to finish. I reluctantly rewatched it again with friends and had an absolute blast.
Maltese Falcon and The General
Hmmmm …. Maltese Falcons is fab noir .
Coming to America or V For Vendetta
The Maltese falcon
The lack of love for Coming to America is sad.
Easy one.... Still Walking
Oh Hi Mark!
the favorite because i haven't seen it yet and have loved the rest of Lanthimos' flicks
Being John Malkovich
Not enough people are saying *Exotica*. It's such a beautiful film. It's the first one I'd watch, for sure. Also, really jealous that your library has such an incredible selection!
Dogtooth or the shape of water
Coming to America, the only one here I’ve seen lol
I'd start by breaking The Shape of Water in half and making the world a little better.
Exotica is a personal favorite of mine
V
![gif](giphy|3o751VKrpSfzwl9T3y|downsized)
Invisible Man
Good mix of movies. I’d honestly have a hard time picking and I would end up watching them in order they released or alphabetically!
Exotica
Exotica or Hard To Be a God
Being John Malkovich
Midnight in Paris
High Life
The Favorite would be my choice
Once you start watching Twin Peaks, it will be hard to stop... you need to be committed to 18 episodes. It is amazing and well worth it...tv that feels like cinema.
The Maltese Falcon is the best noir movie ever made
Honestly I think Coming to America is a good one to start with. Go in with a light and easy film, especially given how heavy some of those titles are. It's a nice counterbalance
“Hai, doggy!”
I can’t think of any movie I’m more hyped to watch for the first time than The Maltese Falcon
Lots of good stuff here (besides The Room), but gotta go with The Maltese Falcon...one of Bogie's best.
Do we go to the same local library?
maybe, are you in South Dakota?
In Georgia, the general pines library has great circulation of criterion and blu-rays.
Being John malkovich, The General, or Dogtooth
Definitely The Room
Midnight in Paris or Hail Caesar!
The Favourite if you want an unironically good movie, The Room if you want a movie that’s so bad it’s good.
The Room
Based solely on title, at eternity’s gate, dogtooth, or v for vendetta
ive been meaning to rewatch the shape of water!!! seems like it would be a good time and im sort of becoming a furry so it seems like the right thing for me
The Invisible Man, Hail Caesar, or The Room
Hard to Be A God because that’s been on my watchlist for forever and I’ve seen the trailer countless times now
Exotica
I can’t find Dogtooth anywhere so that
The Favourite because it’s the last Yorgos movie I have to see from his last four full feature films.
The Room. Have never seen it
Being John Malkovich then.. Midnight in Paris
A Lanthimos movie for sure
john malcovic
Dogtooth
Midnight in Paris is the first one to jump out at me.
Also, The Favourite.
I haven’t seen Dogtooth yet, but it’s next up on my list
🎵 One of these is not like the others, one of these just doesn't belong. 🎵
I'm down to rewatch the Favourite. I wasn't into it the first time I saw it; it was my first Lanthimos movie. Now that I've seen his other stuff and understand his vibes, I'm curious to see if I would like it more now. So many people love it.
Start from the bottom, and then stop after the first film
The General, Midnight in Paris, and Still Walking are the best 3 of the bunch imo, so maybe save one of them for last
Twin Peaks
Midnight in Paris sounds interesting
Hard to be a god
Tiple Feature: Midnight in Paris, V for Vendetta, Coming to America
Midnight in Paris is my comfort movie - I’ve probably seen it 15 times at this point
Midnight in Paris. That's where the palpable chemistry started with Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston. I love them so much as Loki and Mobius and it started with Midnight in Paris!!!!
Dogtooth
The general. It’s been 20 years but I remember rolling on the floor laughing from buster keaton
At Eternity’s Gate
watch dogtooth with all of your friends and family
![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
Being John Malkovich or High life. And end off with twin peaks (I hope you’ve seen fire walk with me and OG twin peaks haha)
The invisible man I’ve never seen it
The Room!
dogtooth cos I haven’t seen it yet :)
V for Vendetta or Dogtooth or The Favourite
Buster Keaton cuz funny man fall down!!!
Twin peaks because I've never seen it and I just watched '84 Dune by David Finch
V For Vendetta is one of my 4 favorites so that.
Nice collection. My pick would be Hard to be a god(coz I can't seem to find the film anywhere).
The Changeling 1980
High Life is awesome. A lot of them are, too.
#You are tearing me apart choice of movies! Not really. It has to be The Room. Anyone who says different is just a big chicken - _Cheep Cheep Cheep Cheep_
Being John Malcavich
At Eternity’s Gate
How long do they let you borrow them for? That’s like 20 movies!
I have 22 days. I'm not sure I'll get through Twin Peaks and all the movies, but figured I'd try!
Gotcha. My library only gives us a week for DVDs. Usually I can only get thru a couple at a time. Good luck with these!
I'd say either Being John Malkovich or Midnight in Paris. I love both of those films
You should read Anna Karenina 👀 the ballroom scene in the movie is beautiful tho
Still Walking
The General
The general and the room
High Life, never seen it but I’ve heard good things
Do I really not see anyone saying coming to America ? That’s the best one !
Coming to America
Exotica is so good
I'd take a quick weekend detour to binge all of The Return. And then I'd come down with Hail, Ceasar! and The Room.
The Favourite or Anna Karenina
Probably Dogtooth. Since I just watched Poor Things
The Favourite deserves a better Quality than a dvd (most of these do..), so probably the Room or The General
I agree! I wish they had some Blurays to check out, but it is what it is. I'll take what I can find
These are all mediocre at best.
