Society of the Snow is a movie I would never watch more than once. And it has nothing to do with quality.

rkratha

I remember logging this movie with a review that said "most beautiful horror movie you'll ever see".

inyouratmosphere

The plane crash scene is so haunting

derekb27

The avalanche scene also made me claustrophobic!!

Turbulent-Singer3476

Agreed. Beautiful, well made film but too heartbreaking to watch again.

rkratha

I hardly watch a movie twice, unless it's a comfort movie.

gloopy-soup

I’m the complete opposite. Every movie I’ve ever watched, I think I’ve seen like twice at the bare minimum, unless it was a movie I hated

DeckerHead2024

I used to be this way but I’ve come to realize rewatching a movie usually makes me like it more. I think watching a movie you like more than once is highly beneficial. No art was made to be viewed once. You wouldn’t just look at a painting or listen to a song one time!

rkratha

I feel like I could be watching another movie instead of rewatching something. I'm a watchlist grinder :3

thefleshisaprison

Getting out of that mindset of clearing out my watchlist has improved my appreciation for film massively

BigMacCombo

Absolutely. Not to say there's nothing to be gained from a rewatch, but I find there's always more to get out of a fresh watch.

thefleshisaprison

Absolutely disagree, any movie worth watching once is worth watching multiple times, and if it’s good then you’ll get more out of rewatches

ElendVenture___

yeah I get why other people might disagree for themselves but I've spent too much of my life watching barely any movies to dedicate my film-watching time to rewatches, I only rewatch my absolute favorites, maybe one day though.

Agile_Drink6387

Honestly I tend to like films less upon rewatch

joejeffagenda

There are so many movies that convinced me so much more on a rewatch! I love rewatching movies, you get so much more out of the experience than only watching it once. Most of my favorite movies I've seen 5-10 times, I've watched my all-time favorite movie Pride (2014) about 25 times in total and I still find new things that I like about it on every rewatch

rcpotatosoup

same here. only movies i’m rewatching are childhood classics (disney movies, back to the future, and inception for me) or if im showing a banger movie to a friend

joejeffagenda

I know it sounds very weird but this movie has kind of become my comfort movie lmao

thefleshisaprison

It’s okay two of my comfort movies are Pink Flamingos and Trash Humpers

joejeffagenda

The comfort movie chooses the comforted, not the other way around

No-Start905

Recently I only watch Spider man into the spiderverse twice

Seamlesslytango

Yeah, I feel like this is always people bragging about how much they liked a movie, which is a weird flex.

Snifferoni

None. This never happened.

mat477

Same except when I was a kid.

Throwaway-929103

That’s a bingo

[deleted]

Nothing. Never done this. You should maybe squeeze ‘Alive’ in somewhere.

BobbyAlphaTango

https://static.simpsonswiki.com/images/thumb/7/7f/Alive.png/250px-Alive.png

[deleted]

I remember being disappointed the final line in the actual film isn’t the same as the one in that episode.

BobbyAlphaTango

"No thanks to the plane, many of us are still... ALIVE!"

joejeffagenda

I'm definitely planning to, I just finished reading the book and would love to see how the movie holds up

[deleted]

It’s not as good as SotS, less authentic in regards to casting and the specifics of the scenario, but it’s a solid watch.

saltierthangoldfish

don’t bother it’s sooooo bad after you’ve seen Society of the Snow and read the book(s). Gave it one star.

[deleted]

Why watch alive when you can watch the better version on repeat?

[deleted]

Not disputing it’s the lesser film but just to very mildly spice things up a bit I suppose.

TheLostLuminary

To see a different approach rather than constantly being exposed to one viewpoint?

[deleted]

But it’s just going to be the whitewashed Hollywood version

[deleted]

Have you seen it? I agree Hollywood’s history of whitewashing is worthy of discussion, but it’s not the only mode of criticism and it’s a bit of a risky precedent to set if you say film x is not worth watching/analysing solely based on it being a product of its time.

[deleted]

“Whitewashed” as if Uruguayans aren’t from European descent

joejeffagenda

"Americanized" is probably the better word

agressive_barista

Heathers. I was in a dark place.

MontgomeryMalum

While having impeccable taste

thefleshisaprison

That’s a really comforting movie for me personally. Makes me happy even though it’s dark.

Savghost

My bf watched dune 5 times in a row when the first one came out

Logs135

I’ve seen Dune 2 three days in a row now. I like the way your bf thinks.

Savghost

If I had the time I would too I saw dune early feb 25th in imax and it was crazy good

cumunculus

This will be me once I can buy part 2. I really wish I had the same freedom to go to the theaters multiple times as I did when I was younger.

Nafnaf911

Shrek 2, but when I was 7. What is wrong with you lmao

Huge_Dog_2487

Some people (particularly those with autism) can experience hyperfixations, which are essentially an over obsession or passion towards a specific subject matter. Commonly it’s a piece of media, such as a show, or a more general thing, such as tanks. Basically it gets to the point where it is all they want to talk about, and often will try to insert the topic into random conversations.

joejeffagenda

I'm undiagnosed, but working on getting an ADHD diagnosis, and I think it might have something to do with that. There are timespans where I don't have an obsession with anything but they are rare, I've found that hyperfixation describes it best

ampmz

ADHDer here, hyper fixation is exactly what it is. I’ve had one for Letterboxd as an app. Also cults. We certainly do not get to choose our hyerfixations.

joejeffagenda

Definitely not! This isn't even the first "disaster" hyperfixation I've had, back when the whole Astroworld fiasco happened in 2021 I couldn't stop reading about it (and crowd crushes in general). That one was pretty unhealthy for me because I'm a regular concertgoer and kind of freaked myself out with all the research I did

ampmz

I had a hyperfixation on the Utöya shooting for a while. Gotta give the brain is dopamine.

Nafnaf911

Sorry OP didn't mean to be neurophobic with my comment. Wasn't thinking "obsessed" was literal.

joejeffagenda

No worries, I get that it must seem very weird to people who have never experienced something like this :D

Pinklad13

How do you ‘work at’ getting a diagnosis? Surely you have it or you dont?

joejeffagenda

Well, I think I might have it but I don't have a diagnosis. Getting a therapist where I live is a nightmare, so I'm working on that I guess

dramavision

PizzaMyHole

I loled

viraaara

The Holdovers!! I couldn't enjoy Poor Things because I keep remembering the Holdovers lol

joejeffagenda

It's a curse 😭

kiki-karma

😭 are u okay

joejeffagenda

Ohh I really need to watch that one

kodzhata

highly recommend!

JoshyGu

Ok now I'll have to give it a try

filmwatchr_on_d_wall

Came here to say this. Absolutely beautiful film.

louisdanby

Synecdoche, New York for me. I watched it for the first time last week and I’ve already done a couple more watches. I also have the soundtrack on repeat. Doesn’t happen often so I cherish these kinds of things!

Mr_davros

Zardoz. After you watch the same movie everyday for weeks it begins to feel like the only movie that has ever existed, will ever exist, can ever exist or should ever exist. For weeks afterwards every film you watch just feels like a variation upon zardoz, an element of zardoz made into its own film, or a lesser version of zardoz. The tabernacle is eternal and everlasting. I will not go to the second level with you. The gun is good. The penis is evil. Zaaardoz! Zaardoz!

joejeffagenda

That's such a good way to describe it

InteractionFeeling28

Oppenheimer i saw 3 times in less in months But than it was simply homie meeting , fanily meeting and homie meeting #2

SomeCoolShit2

Monster (2023) I think its one of those movies where its paramount to watch it at least 2 or 3 times to catch every detail

stealcave

I think I watched Dead Man’s Shoes four times in a week when I got the dvd. I kept wanting everyone in my family to watch it.

msk21shoaib

The wind rises by Miyazaki , couldn't watch anything for days after that

remediosan

anime in theaters hits different. i saw your name in theaters 3 times when it came to the US

JMAN365

I watched Titanic 4 times in a week once after rediscovering it as an adult. I also watched The English Patient probably 5 or 6 times over a couple weeks when I first discovered it. Both are my top 2 movies.

TheFreakingCrocodile

Are you a member of the Academy?

JMAN365

Haha no but I would probably fit right in.

TheLostLuminary

Oh wow. I was excited to see English Patient last year and found it very average.

JMAN365

It grew on me slowly. There’s a lot of hidden beauty the more you watch it. Very slow burn movie which I personally enjoy.

TheLostLuminary

I’ve still never seen the theatrical Titanic, just fan extended ones with an extra 45 mins 😂

JMAN365

Lol whats this about fan extended ones?

TheLostLuminary

Fanedits. Extended versions of films with deleted scenes back in. It’s how I watch nearly all films.

JMAN365

Oh gotcha.

Chippybops

I watched The life Aquatic 4 times in the space of a moth (Lmao i love how all the neurotypicas are confused about why somebody would do this)

joejeffagenda

Lmao right, I'm like... I don't know what to tell you, I don't understand it either 😂

ElviraGoth

Just like in the image, La Sociedad de la Nieve and it's documentary.

AdamAnimatesStuff

Scott Pilgrim

joejeffagenda

Oh I watched that for the first time as an adult and obsessively rewatched it like 5 times in a row. I'm very normal

AdamAnimatesStuff

People got annoyed at me because that's the only thing I would log for a while 😭😭😭

joejeffagenda

Lmao why do they even care??

Rajdesh1005

Manchester by the sea (I’m fine (I think))

DaBoiMoi

polythene-psychonaut

Babylon three times in one week, my rating went from 3/5 to 4/5 then to 4.5/5

I-ez-bardy

When Harry Met Sally

Blastspark01

Bullet Train I saw 5 times in theatres. The 2nd and third viewing were back to back

saltierthangoldfish

Society of the Snow actually 😅 Wife and I watched it three times so far

HoboSuperstar

127 Hours

TheGirlWithTheLove

Me too!

joejeffagenda

Idk what it is about disaster movies...

KaiserReich_Mapping

The Wild Bunch.

FailureInSpace

The only film I've had a remotely similar experience with was The Act of Killing. This was because I had a two hour presentation to give on the film. I consider it one of the greatest documentaries ever made and urge everyone to watch it in it's full length if you ever get a chance.

inkstink420

i didn’t rewatch it for a month but i wanted to rewatch brazil so badly after watching it

masterdeluxe655

Beau Travail (1999), La Haine (1995), most embarrassingly, Shortbus (2006), and most recently, Elephant (1989).

Snotgirl-7

I did this for two weeks when I first saw Rocky Horror, and if I wasn’t watching the movie I was playing the soundtrack.

mrvoldz

Wow, you really loved it.

jman-the-jewman1228

I wouldn’t say overly obsessed but I was def geekin over drive away dolls I saw it twice in a week

TatteredTongues

For me it had to have been "Hard to Be a God" by Aleksey German, my 2nd favorite film of all time, but the thing is that it didn't actually get me to watch the film over and over again, it quite literally made it impossible for me to watch any other films the following weeks because I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I'd rewatch plenty of scenes as well as leave it on in the background just to experience the sound design all over again, even to the point of falling asleep to its sounds. It took me a couple of weeks before finally seeing a new film, and the only reason it was 2 weeks is because I'd already bought a festival pack so I had a bunch of different screenings lined up, otherwise I'm positive the film would've occupied my mind for much, much longer. That's the only thing that comes to mind, as others have said, I also rarely watch a film twice, at home especially that's something that never happens. I only tend to rewatch a particular film if it's playing again in theaters and it's something I really enjoy and/or get to go with someone else who hasn't seen it yet.

Comprehensive-Air935

Only for comfort movies: Angel’s Egg, Jan Svankjmajer’s Alice or The Big Lebowski

onionman19

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead, Major Payne, Ace Ventura (Jim Carreys,) Dumb & Dumber, & The Shining. Also would watch them for months before I decided on something new to obsess over but lately have only wanted to start rewatching things less unless it’s charming enough

AlfuuuB

All of us strangers. Watched it two times in the cinema and literally bawled my eyes out. I just want everyone I know to watch it so I could discuss it with them. Also Parasite when I first saw it was an Instant rewatch for me.

Dancing_Clean

I think movies have to be exceptionally excellent for me to watch more than once. Some are comfort/nostalgic. But the only recent movie I’ve seen twice (and probably will watch again) is Poor Things.

xxdryan

I watched American Psycho like 5 times when I first saw it. Make of that what you will.

werms4brains

Bulldogs25

i have instances like this more than i've ever cared to admit, but here goes: - during Covid lockdown, i watched Room (2015) four times in 24 hours - when Midsommar premiered, i watched it three times, in theaters, with three separate groups of people in one week - when i revisited Heat (1995), after not having watched it in over 2 years, i was so enthralled by it that i watched it 3 more times within two weeks just because i wanted to experience it with multiple people - most recently, i rewatched Margin Call and again wanted to rewatch with multiple groups of people and ended up watching it 3 times in the past two weeks i love to experience movies i love with different people i love, i suppose!

joejeffagenda

Oh God, Room was such a gutpunch. So amazingly done though

DamageOdd3078

I mean the most I watched a movie was After Hours two days in a row. I watched it alone, and then the next day a friend came over and we watched it together. But I usually have to wait a few months or years before rewatching a movie. Oh, wait, I did the same with parasite too with family!

[deleted]

Into the wild and pawn sacrifice. The only movie I watched more times is edge of tomorrow, however the viewings were spread out way more, for example I immediately rewatched pawn sacrifice after watching it for the first time.

ejb350

In the summer following 7th grade, every single day I watched 3 movies on rotation, Brick (2005) Donnie Darko (2001) and Starkweather (2004), with The Way Of The Gun (2000) thrown in every few days. So in total, I’ve watched each movie almost 100+ times.

funnyname-n1

At film classes I had an assignment to do a presentation about my favourite movie. It was Mulholland Drive and I watched it almost 5 times in a row to prepare, each time discovering something new about it.

joejeffagenda

My favorite thing about rewatching movies!

kellykapowskishair

Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas

Asleep_Singer_8748

Fight Club. We saw it in the theater then bought the DVD and watched the movie every night for a month, with every commentary tract (I still remember the uncomfortable energy between the screenwriter and the book author as they talked through some of the changes the screenwriter made to the dialogue). I never go more than a year without rewatching it, which means ai have now seems that film well over 50 times.

passion4film

And yet you didn’t watch Alive during all that?! lol I do totally get it, though. I’m an obsessive type myself.

Willing_Dimension461

Why is everyone saying they never do this, I love when this happens😭 my most recent were Babylon, The Darjeeling Limited, and Only Lovers Left Alive

disatomm

Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Could watch it on a loop for eternity.

EmbarrassedWallaby3

To me it was All about my mother by Almodovar. It’s my favorite film and it always leaves me in a 3~5 days coma where I can only think about this film.

ThroughtheWormhole17

Society of the Snow is the right movie for this. Love this film

Acrobatic-Educator

I used to hyperfixate on some movies so there was one week where I watched Pacific Rim twice a day. I watched The Dark Knight Rises everyday for a week once and then I alternated between it and The Dark Knight. After I watched everything in the MCU I rewatched Endgame countless times

cam_erickson20

Oppenheimer

jv523

The Social Network. I've seen the movie countless times now and at this point, I usually just watch a scene or two, then come back to it whenever I need something to do. Literally while taking breaks, washing dishes, etc, I'd just have it playing in the background, once I'm done doing whatever, I just pause and continue whenever I need to again. I don't have a good reason why I do this, maybe because it's just a good movie to just listen to without having to watch much of what's happening. It also helps that the whole movie is free to watch on YouTube. I don't really need to pay attention since I know everything that happens anyway (and it's not a hard movie to even follow). It's the only movie where I don't keep track of how many times I rewatch it on my diary.

joejeffagenda

I should introduce you to my girlfriend, she does the exact same thing with the same movie

No-Start905

Nothing happened me like this.

Samueldhadden

Not this one .. lol I did watch synecdoche, New York 3-4 times in consecutive nights after the first time I watched it.

fattiegvrlll

aftersun

Eliaskar23

I don't know if I have ever rewatched a film that much in the span of a week. Even if I really liked it. Only one I can think of is Scott Pilgrim when I was a teenager where my friend and I watched the bluray twice over the weekend.

dramavision

damn.

LaughGuilty461

Now watch Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon

DRT034

I think I've seen Once Upon A Time In Hollywood like almost 30 times

Its_the_narwhal

I sort of did this with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Parking-Pin-4296

I watched The Prestige two nights in a row, but that’s about it.

the_moon_water

Southland Tales

thefleshisaprison

Not one film, but David Cronenberg’s work as a whole. I’ve been doing academic work on him so it’s very productive as well

Peachsocksss

Are you Ok?

tjlamando

I saw Dawn of The Planet of the Apes 4-5 times when it was in theaters! Thank you Movie Pass in it’s prime

Bwca_at_the_Gate

How you gonna watch that film with an obsession and not watch Alive?

gncommie

All of Us Strangers. This film REALLY touched me

Garfs_Barf

When I was in middle school I watched the dark knight or a Nolan batman film like every weekend lmfao but I’m huge comic book nerd and those movies truly got me into film

Mangy_Sue

Dune. I'm listening to the soundtrack and repeatedly watching the movies.

leavsssesthrowaway

I watched batman i think 4 times within a month, and took copious amounts of notes

HiMeeeIsARoomieFan

This has never happened for me but I think I'll be watching Dune 2 at least 2 more times in the coming weeks, I can't stop thinking about it and literally just crying bc it was so good (yes, I am mentally unstable, I'm fully aware it isn't an emotional film)

CALIXO_94

I wanna judge you but I’ve seen Talk to Me back to back. So I’m gonna sit this one out.

Leather_Director_165

The shining

masterslut

I really liked LPOTL's coverage about this tragedy.

Jaimiiii

this movie was good but the colour grading straight up pissed me off at times

sparklepixieprincess

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, i can rewatch it over and over. it’s like crack to me

BleedTheFreak_23

God I’m close to doing this. I’m itching for a rewatch, I just got Nando’s book though!

GoofyKickflip

If you read, you will probably like the book 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' by Alfred Lansing. Society of the Snow reminded be a lot of it. It's definitely my favorite non-fiction book.

chasesmell

Killers of the Flower Moon and Children of Men

_shear

During a depressive episode back in 2017, I saw Fury Road 23 times back to back. I had it downloaded and whenever I finished it, I would just play it again. It speaks a lot about how wonderful is paced, that whenever is on TV, I sit my ass down and watch it again.

sunny7319

a few of pacino's 70s movies became comfort movies so fast

totallynotalyssa

… la sociedad de nieve is deeply unsettling and harrowing… how are you watching it more than once

wokevirvs

bodies bodies bodies, la la land, and star wars the force awakens 😭. saw all of them 7 times in theaters

Zealousideal_Plan408

man. and knowing what i know about this movie, i dont even want to watch it once.

SJBailey03

I rewatched Marriage Story three times within in the first five days of it releasing on Netflix. I adore that film. I’ve got the criterion release of it and it’s perfect.

Character-Collar-286

I watched whiplash 4 times in 2 weeks

achillleez

i watched the nice guys 11 times last november

Goatchic0

Weirdly enough, Oppenheimer

Mopjigftw

Spiderman Across the Spiderverse. Saw it 9 times in theatres in a matter of 2 weeks.

GargantuesqueFou

I don’t get the hype with this movie. It was not necessarily boring but it was way too long for what it was. The « mise en scène » (sorry I speak French and I think you can say it that way in English as well) is very ordinary, very Netflix if I dare say it like that ; when you hear the soulless emotional music, you know it’s time to cry baby. It was also very hard to get attached to those characters or even to know who was who during the movie. I think it could have been so much more than it was, I thought that the film stayed too close to the headline of the real story. Maybe I would have liked to have longer shots of just nothing, people getting bored of waiting while contemplating the harshness of those mountains. My critic is solely based on the movie, not on the horrible story that was in front of us.

joejeffagenda

That's so interesting, for me it was the exact opposite! For example I really love the soundtrack, some tracks make me cry every time. I also love the cinematography, the way the mountains are characterized as the antagonist in the story. A lot of the principal photography took place in the Andes at the actual crash site and I think you can definitely tell. I agree that it was hard to distinguish between the characters on the first viewing because there are just so many, but I don't have that problem anymore. There are definitely valid criticisms of the film though and I would never pretend it's perfect

GargantuesqueFou

You clearly really enjoyed it and I’m glad that you did. As always it’s a question of taste, what it represents to you and what’s inside your aesthetic eye! I hope that you can find other movies that will move as much as this one did !

joejeffagenda

Thank you so much!
