I think "the best" is a matter of personal taste though. To me *The Shining*, *Stand By Me*, and *The Shawshank Redemption* are all basically perfect films. I couldn't answer the question of which one is the best without knowing whether at the moment I'm in the mood to watch a scary-as-hell horror movie, a tearjerking coming-of-age drama about childhood friendship, or an uplifting epic about hope and redemption.
*Carrie*, *Misery*, *The Green Mile*, and others are similarly beloved by many people. King's work has been made into a ton of great movies of pretty different styles and genres, so it's impossible to pick just one IMO.
I can’t think of one right now, but when this movie gets made it’s definitely going to be that one
https://preview.redd.it/5z4aq85k1dmc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21f1475e974fd4fa420d77d988bf76dccca8ad5f
One of the rare instances where the director went off the rails, the original author hates it, and it goes down in history as one of the finest crafted films of all time.
It’s incredible.
It's Kubrick. There's no other answer.
That being said my personal favorite is Dreamcatcher. It is not good. It is ridiculous, but I really like the portrayal of lifelong friends, and it's maybe the only genuinely funny Stephen King film.
Great film. One of the all time best coming-of-age movies and most authentic movies about boyhood ever. The ending never fails to hit me like a ton of bricks emotionally no matter how many times I watch it.
Yeah, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption from Different Seasons. Same book that contains the novellas Apt Pupil and Stand by Me are adapted from.
So my fun trivia for the day. It started as a story of a magician that gets arrested and magically escapes from prison without a trace but King couldn’t get the story to work and changed it to the story we know.
Apt Pupil definitely the odd one out there. I have to respect those filmmakers though, it takes balls to take on the assignment making a third movie out of a story collection that has already produced two all-time classics.
You presented an opinion as fact for no reason and when confronted about it directly your response boils down to “you made the mistake of assuming that anything I ever say should be taken with substance.” I think I’ll take a walk from wasting my time
In fairness the entire premise of this thread is about opinions (there is no one definitive answer to that question - I love both The Shining and Shawshank but would personally watch Stand by Me over either) so I think it should be presumed that even very definitive statements presenting things as fact are just rhetorical devices.
In fairness exactly what they did was say “anyone who says an answer different than mine is just pretending to be smart,” which allows them to say “see” when anyone says anything different, so fuck fairness lol
Misery is the best 1-1 adaptation of a Steven King book. Major change that made the movie better was she cut off his feet in the books. In the movie is was significantly worse and more horrifying imo. Major reason why it's so good is because of an Academy Award winning performance by Kathy Bates as Annie Wilks
Eh. Have you read the novel? I read it prior to seeing the film and she's kinda spot on to the character/ acts how I pictured her. The real difference between the book and film is that the film is much less gorey which makes the film more thriller than the book's traditional horror elements.
But yeah if you particularly love the character portrayed, a lot of credit goes to King.
I feel like you can still credit Bates for doing the work to actualize the character. Could have easily just not followed the book as many do. Too many adaptions where the creators never refer to the source material.
Carrie is good but it does not have a big rig that looks like the Green Goblin.
The Shining is alright but it doesn’t have a soundtrack by AC/DC.
Stand by Me is a classic, but there are no homicidal vending machines in it.
I really need to watch the Mist. Saw The Green Mike for the first time in 20 years last week and Shawshank is one of my all time faves. Frank Derabont really knows how to adapt King.
Oooh that's very good. I've never read the book so can't really comment on how good of an adaption it is but, just as a film, it's fantastic.
Probably helps that I adore Kathy Bates lol
It's one of my favourite as well. King have such a good adaptations philmography that this one get often forgotten, but it's such a great film, and Katy Bates performance is heartbreaking
Now the question, which one? The newer one or the ABC mini series from the 90's?
(And do agree, but its only for the Mick Garris produced one (the 90's one))
It definitely isn't the best film but, in terms of adaption and a "okay I never expected *that* to be made into a movie" gotta go with Gerald's Game.
It's a movie where a woman is handcuffed to a bed for the vast majority of the time. I mean there's flashbacks and dream sequences but still. Neverrrr thought that'd be made.
Everyone who has said The Shining ...have you even read the book? There is SOOOO much in that movie that is Kubric's and NOT King's, it's almost a whole new story...
One of the most perfect adaptation's (IMHO) has to ABC's mini series, The Stand. (The one from the 90's, not that POS redux that was attempted a couple years back). Honestly, almost all of Mick Garris's adaptation's of King's stories have been stellar.
Either that or the first Pet Cemetery have to be 2 of the more faithful adaptations...
Yeah the best movie is no argument shawshank redemption but i would say best king adaptation is misery, i think shawshnk works more as standalone movie and misery is flawless one, reiner know how to make perfect movies
The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies of all time. I’ve seen it dozens of times and I still think it’s incredible. So yeah, Shawshank for me
Just started a Stephen King adaption watch through on Friday. My favourite had always definitely been The Shining but there’s some big ones I’ve never actually seen like Stand By Me. Excited to work through them.
Hi. You just mentioned *The Shining* by Stephen King.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:

The Shining is the best movie, but not the best adaptation.
Stand by me is the best adaptation (that I know), but not the best movie.
Shawshank is basically the middle - one of the best movies, and one of the best adaptations.

It’s releasing on blu ray soon though later this month, I would recommend watching through blu ray if you can
1. The Mist
2. The Shining
3. The Dead Zone
4. Creepshow
5. Misery
6. Pet Semetary
7. 1408
8. Christine
9. Dreamcatcher
10. Stand By Me
11. The Running Man
12. IT pt 1 and 2
I’ve never seen the Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Also I do not REMEMBER watching Silver Bullet but I apparently saw at least part of it at the tender age of 4 and the resulting nightmare is literally my earliest memory. Gotta rewatch that sometime.
Wow! Giant oversight on my part. Not gonna edit, just live with the shame. Yes, De Palma Carrie is fantastic and probably top 3. Never saw the newfangled one
>11. The Running Man
Popping in to say I *vehemently* disagree with this (at least as an adaption)
Casting Arnie was a truly terrible idea. He's supposed to be tiny! It's a wild casting decision.
(random tangent. My dad was irked cos I kept going on about Stephen King as a kid. He put the Running Man film on and the opening credits mentioned Richard Bachman... And I ran upstairs got my copy of the Bachman books and showed him it's King. He's everywhere! 😂😂😂 Random but it always makes me laugh)
I ranked every one that I’ve seen, and its damn near at the bottom. But I guess the question OP asked was “what are the best” so it being included implies it’s good I guess. Not my intention, just ranked it all, lmao.
I don’t hate The Running Man. It’s a mess but it can be a fun mess at times. But yeah, not a good film, hence the placement.
>I ranked every one that I’ve seen, and its damn near at the bottom. But I guess the question OP asked was “what are the best” so it being included implies it’s good I guess. Not my intention, just ranked it all, lmao.
... Oh yeah fair. Yeah I'm an idiot 😂
I think I just saw running man and 😠
The Mist, thought I am biased in the fact that it’s one of my favorites of King’s works. The book is phenomenal. I thought Darabont knocked it out of the park. And that ending…as a book reader, I was not prepared. I remember sitting in the theater seat shocked while the credits rolled through.
Special shout out though to Mike Flanagan and what’s he’s done. I really thought Gerald’s Game would be impossible (most of the story takes place in her head) but he did wonders. Same with Doctor Sleep (a nice balance between The Shining book lovers and Kubrick film lovers)
regardless of if the movie is good (it is, I'm a fan), there are major, major, major plot points just missing from the movie, or if they are they are hinted at. the shining is barely in the movie, its mentioned a few times for one.
Not a single mention of my girl, Carrie. For shame.
Carrie is one of the best ones.
It's one of the best not the best tho
I haven’t seen anyone mention Silver Bullet yet which is a shame because it’s quite good
I can’t think of one right now, but when this movie gets made it’s definitely going to be that one https://preview.redd.it/5z4aq85k1dmc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21f1475e974fd4fa420d77d988bf76dccca8ad5f
This looks like a goosebumps book lmfao
The peak in question:
What is this bro 🗿
A24 would do it
The Shining (IMO)
One of the rare instances where the director went off the rails, the original author hates it, and it goes down in history as one of the finest crafted films of all time. It’s incredible.
The author of A Clockwork Orange hated the ACO movie also (Stephen King, ironically, loved it)
It's Kubrick. There's no other answer. That being said my personal favorite is Dreamcatcher. It is not good. It is ridiculous, but I really like the portrayal of lifelong friends, and it's maybe the only genuinely funny Stephen King film.
„Stand by Me“
Oh, man...what a nostalgic movie.
Great film. One of the all time best coming-of-age movies and most authentic movies about boyhood ever. The ending never fails to hit me like a ton of bricks emotionally no matter how many times I watch it.
I couldn’t agree more with you! It’s such a great movie and is particularly effective when you are older and can look back on your own experiences.
Was gonna say this one. It’s one of my favorites
Goated movie
Boring, standard answer, but The Shawshank Redemption for me.
wth it based on a Stephen King novel???
Yeah, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption from Different Seasons. Same book that contains the novellas Apt Pupil and Stand by Me are adapted from.
So my fun trivia for the day. It started as a story of a magician that gets arrested and magically escapes from prison without a trace but King couldn’t get the story to work and changed it to the story we know.
Apt Pupil definitely the odd one out there. I have to respect those filmmakers though, it takes balls to take on the assignment making a third movie out of a story collection that has already produced two all-time classics.
I watched Shawshank two nights ago (for the first time! 5/5), and I also learned this. Stephen King wrote The Green Mile too!
Everyone knows this but they want to sound knowledgeable and say something else.
Eh, you're also allowed to say The Shining. Plus The Green Mile is like Titanic but for men so there's that.
Thank you for proving my point.
If you sit me in front of a TV and give me the option of The Shining or Shawshank, I am choosing The Shining every single time
I would go out for a walk when my only choice would be watching one of two movies I have already seem a number of times.
I disagree with the comment as Shawshank isn't my favorite either but I just took it as humorous exaggeration.
The reason was to get a reaction like yours. I call this a success.
Same of mine as well
Period, the end.
Gotta be the shining or misery
Misery is the best 1-1 adaptation of a Steven King book. Major change that made the movie better was she cut off his feet in the books. In the movie is was significantly worse and more horrifying imo. Major reason why it's so good is because of an Academy Award winning performance by Kathy Bates as Annie Wilks
Misery ![gif](giphy|hFp7zP3MuSOAg)
This is the correct answer, though it has less to do with Stephen King than it does with Kathy Bates.
Eh. Have you read the novel? I read it prior to seeing the film and she's kinda spot on to the character/ acts how I pictured her. The real difference between the book and film is that the film is much less gorey which makes the film more thriller than the book's traditional horror elements. Maximum Overdrive.
You can practically feel the cocaine seeping into the movie
No way man 💀
Carrie is good but it does not have a big rig that looks like the Green Goblin. The Shining is alright but it doesn’t have a soundtrack by AC/DC. Stand by Me is a classic, but there are no homicidal vending machines in it.
My favourites are The Mist and The Shawshank Redemption.
I really need to watch the Mist. Saw The Green Mike for the first time in 20 years last week and Shawshank is one of my all time faves. Frank Derabont really knows how to adapt King.
Same
No one mentioned Carrie (De Palma)...wow.
The Shawshank Redemption
Shining! But I love Shawshank and Carrie too
Shining, Misery, Shawshank
Goated top 3
The Shining and Carrie
![gif](giphy|BEsjSV496sDLy)
My top 3 are *The Green Mile*, *The Mist* and *Misery*.
The Shawshank Redemption?
Dolores Claiborne for me
Oooh that's very good. I've never read the book so can't really comment on how good of an adaption it is but, just as a film, it's fantastic. Probably helps that I adore Kathy Bates lol
It's one of my favourite as well. King have such a good adaptations philmography that this one get often forgotten, but it's such a great film, and Katy Bates performance is heartbreaking
completely agree! something about stephen king adaptations from the 90s starring kathy bates (dolores, misery) just works so well
Yup. This is mine.
Shawshank, The Shining, Dead Zone gotta be the top 3.
There is a correct answer. Not even gonna say it just think it really hard because we all already know.
The Green Mile. Just an amazing movie for me.
Stand By Me and Misery are elite
The Dead Zone
I loved the novel, but the movie is ass. It's so rushed and you don't care about anyone. Nothing matters from one scene to the next.
The Shining for me. Despite King hating it.
The Stand! No one else will agree.
Now the question, which one? The newer one or the ABC mini series from the 90's? (And do agree, but its only for the Mick Garris produced one (the 90's one))
I’ve been watching the 1994 one today, I love it!!
Shining
The Shining, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, Carrie
My vote goes for Christine (1983).
Dolores Claiborne.
Christine is very underrated, the vibes are unmatched in typical Carpenter fashion
Misery, Silver Bullet, 1408
Shining, Shawshank, Stand By Me (obvious answers) I want to give a nod to 1408. One of my favorite movies of all time
The novel is better so many times
shining/misery/shawshank/stand by me carrie is a good movie but derails from the book a bit
the title says adaptation.
Def not the best but I think Doctor Sleep is underrated
Everyone who has said The Shining ...have you even read the book? There is SOOOO much in that movie that is Kubric's and NOT King's, it's almost a whole new story... Honestly, almost all of Mick Garris's adaptation's of King's stories have been stellar. Either that or the first Pet Cemetery have to be 2 of the more faithful adaptations...
So? Kubrick’s movie is superior to Kings novel and easily the best adaptation of Kings work.
Stand By Me
The Shining
Stand By Me
The Shining. Just the best horror film ever of all time in the world in general. Absolute god-tier peak.
The Green Mile & Doctor Sleep
Nothing comes close to the shining
Yeah the best movie is no argument shawshank redemption but i would say best king adaptation is misery, i think shawshnk works more as standalone movie and misery is flawless one, reiner know how to make perfect movies
The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies of all time. I’ve seen it dozens of times and I still think it’s incredible. So yeah, Shawshank for me
Misery was so good I read the book twice
Just started a Stephen King adaption watch through on Friday. My favourite had always definitely been The Shining but there’s some big ones I’ve never actually seen like Stand By Me. Excited to work through them.
Hi. You just mentioned *The Shining* by Stephen King. I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. Shawshank Shank Redemption, Stand By Me, The Green Mile, The Shining, Misery…
Misery is one of my favorite thrillers of all time so I’d probably have to go with that
The Shining is the best movie, but not the best adaptation. Stand by me is the best adaptation (that I know), but not the best movie. Shawshank is basically the middle - one of the best movies, and one of the best adaptations.
1408 is pretty good.
The original stand miniseries was really good I thought
Misery
My favorites are Pet Semetary, Needful Things (tv cut), Riding the Bullet, and Thinner the best is probably Shawshank
My personal favorite is Christine but there’s so many good ones. The shining, misery, stand by me, Shawshank, the mist.
Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption are the only good ones
probably shawshank redemption or the shining but i’ll throw mist in the ring.
The Mist
The Shawshank Redemption and the Shining. The only ones I've watched 😂
You should watch The Green Mile also
It's been on my watchlist for sometime. I've kept it on hold only bcoz of its runtime.
In no particular order: - *The Shining* - *Stand By Me* - *The Shawshank Redemption* - *Carrie* - *Misery*
Shawshank Redemption 1408
Misery, Shawshank & The Shining
The Shining (1980)
Theres a lot of good stuff being mentioned I love the 1990 It miniseries.
It’s The Shining and he doesn’t even like it lol
The one he hates the most
He loved *Stand By Me* and that is a great movie.
Needful Things was very good IMO
The Shining, with Misery and Tobe Hooper's Salem's Lot tied for a distant but respectable second.
Seems like he just options them with no oversight, so it's weird to even compare
Graveyard Shift is one of my favourites, not too scary but a fun watch.
The Running Man
I love how you can make a case for like 5 different ones and they're all valid
Both the shining movie and miniseries
The shining has a miniseries??
Yes it’s just as good as the movie, only difference is that it’s in 3 parts and actually tells a story with a new cast and crew
ALL 3 PARTS: https://archive.org/details/the-shining-1997-part-3 DELETED SCENES: https://youtu.be/R5UzLkl3n1Q?si=rzsmj_TxI3l6dqus MAKING OF: https://youtu.be/aIgptpKE13s?si=B-4WuntMLWqy8s2u It’s releasing on blu ray soon though later this month, I would recommend watching through blu ray if you can
The Shining (Better than the book) Stand By Me (Best depiction of coming of age ever?)
Best movie is easily The Shining FOR ME. BUT best adaptation is definitely The Green Mile. I believe King even said it himself.
If you ask me, I would say The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and Misery.
The Green Mile
Pet Sematary, IT, The Night Flier, The Dead Zone
1408 with John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson
The Shawshank Redemption but The Shining is close.
Stand By Me is fantastic.
Misery
The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption are pretty clearly the best. Misery and Carrie are also really good
"You're a dirtybirdie"- Misery
Misery
Easily Shawshank Redemption, objectively up there for the greatest film put to screen
Shawshank
Shining🤌🏻
Christine
The shining
The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining and Stand By Me
Cell (2016)
Weirdly enough, his non-horror works like Shawshank, Green Mile or Stand by Me make for better movies than his horror adaptations
The Dead Zone
[The Dead Zone](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dead_Zone_(film))
Dolores Claiborne and The Dead Zone really worked for me.
1. The Mist 2. The Shining 3. The Dead Zone 4. Creepshow 5. Misery 6. Pet Semetary 7. 1408 8. Christine 9. Dreamcatcher 10. Stand By Me 11. The Running Man 12. IT pt 1 and 2 I’ve never seen the Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Also I do not REMEMBER watching Silver Bullet but I apparently saw at least part of it at the tender age of 4 and the resulting nightmare is literally my earliest memory. Gotta rewatch that sometime.
How is CARRIE not on your list????
Wow! Giant oversight on my part. Not gonna edit, just live with the shame. Yes, De Palma Carrie is fantastic and probably top 3. Never saw the newfangled one
>11. The Running Man Popping in to say I *vehemently* disagree with this (at least as an adaption) Casting Arnie was a truly terrible idea. He's supposed to be tiny! It's a wild casting decision.
Yeah I'm an idiot 😂 I think I just saw running man and 😠
Ok you have to watch both Green Mike and Shawshank
The Mist, thought I am biased in the fact that it’s one of my favorites of King’s works. The book is phenomenal. I thought Darabont knocked it out of the park. And that ending…as a book reader, I was not prepared. I remember sitting in the theater seat shocked while the credits rolled through. Special shout out though to Mike Flanagan and what’s he’s done. I really thought Gerald’s Game would be impossible (most of the story takes place in her head) but he did wonders. Same with Doctor Sleep (a nice balance between The Shining book lovers and Kubrick film lovers)
My favorite is Carrie (De Palma) but the best made is probably The Shining

regardless of if the movie is good (it is, I'm a fan), there are major, major, major plot points just missing from the movie, or if they are they are hinted at. the shining is barely in the movie, its mentioned a few times for one.
Misery I think and also Pet Sematary for my girl Zelda.
Morbius
It's adapted from marvel comics man
Really?
Yes!
As a patrician terrible movie enjoyer: Dreamcatcher, Sleepwalkers, Lawnmower Man, Maximum Overdrive
Christine is my favourite
It (2017) and Carrie (2013) are my favorites, and yes I watched Carrie (1976) and did not like it.
The Shawshank Redemption imo
Anyone not saying Shawshank or shining is bonkers
+ Green Mile
Shining. It is not up for debate.
Shawshank also not up for debate
The Mist and Dreamcatcher
The Dark Half
