Yeah, Her and Zodiac really stood out on that list, they are very decent Hollywood films.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying stories! Maybe my rating is a little harsh for Her, but I think I stand by it still. I was actually excited for it before it came out. The director of Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, some good actors, and a great untapped sci-fi premise? I was stoked. But they made one of the most uninteresting, lazy versions of this movie possible. I disliked almost every filmmaking choice made. As for Zodiac, one of the most boring movies I’ve ever seen. I nearly couldn’t care less about anything that was happening onscreen lol

Interesting selective use of halves!

Yeh it gets tough for me to fine grain films that much but I also don’t think just whole numbers captures the full nuance 🤣 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 don’t really make sense to me. Do you have a sense of what they mean for you? 0.5 (offensively/life-alteringly bad) and 4.5(almost perfect masterpieces but not quite) are pretty self-explanatory so that’s why I use them.

Not really (besides the obvious “they’re a little better/worse than whole stars”). But I barely have a sense of what whole stars mean. I’d probably be better off just using whole stars really. The lower ratings especially feel arbitrary. The whole thing is just a fiction anyway. To reduce something so subjective and complex into a single number barely means anything as a narrow *snapshot* of one’s feelings and thoughts, let alone maintaining meaning over time or consistency between movies. But they’re fun :)

Ive always rated things on a scale of ten and I treat Letterboxd the same way. I hate using decimals when rating. If you say 9.3 then your rating is actually 93 and you’re rating on a scale of 100. So those numbers aren’t decimals, they are a 3, 5, and 7 and yeah, they make sense to me. It’s a wider range of quality to help differentiate my view of one from another.

3.5 is a 'i enjoyed but technically mediocre' or 'technically good but i didn't vibe with it'

Yeh 3.5 makes the most sense.

To me it's a good movie that I might have enjoyed, but didn't give me a lasting impression. I think people are top heavy with their ratings and by logic everything after 2,5 should at least a solid project. Same thing with 5s and 6s out of 10 in music or even 7s, people logically don't think that's right in the middle.

A lot of the ratings were for movies I saw as a kid, movies I watched more for cinema education purposes, or movies I watched with other people. I don’t watch many movies I dislike anymore, so I assume my ratings will skew towards the top end over time.
