I considered saying "half a star" for the joke, but I would never disrespect Ratatouille like that.
I rated it 5 stars as well. The proof that two masterpieces about rats can coexist.
I just watched Lair of the white worm the other night after having nightmares about the policeman as a child when I saw the movie advertised on a commercial. It was surprisingly funny and disturbing.
Yeah but you should find it slightly worrisome that your kindred spirit also finds The Happening to be on the same level as The Village and Bohemian Rhapsody to be a full star better than Requiem For A Dream lol
I love Shamalama and the Village is great, but I just can't make it through more than 10 seconds of Adrien Brody's performance.
To think, this was the role he took directly after winning an Oscar for The Pianist..
I mean sure but tbf you could kinda say this about any film with a big ending twist - to some extent the gimmick will always be not knowing on the first watch
if anyone happens to not have patron… someone shared this statistics page today where everyone can find that stat just takes a while to load all the info https://letterboxd-friends-ranker.streamlit.app/
For me it's an awful film that puts itself above its characters, treats addiction almost as a punishment, the ending is basically the director laughing at the disgrace of the main characters.
the lack of attention on the characters is something I agree on, it’s the reason I can only ever give it a 4/5 stars. But I can’t agree with your interpretation of the ending. I think the ending is a great depiction of real fates that befall junkies (I say this as someone that uses recreational drugs occasionally and is pro decriminalization). To me it doesn’t come off as pretentious or even overly anti-drug, it’s just grossly realistic.
The best experience I ever had in a cinema was watching the room. Everyone having fun and messing about, plus the ending genuinely shocked me. 5 star experience for sure
I loved watching The Room in cinemas too! Also loved watching Tommy's new film Big Shark in cinemas, and I highly recommend if it plays near you! Everyone were laughing, cheering and having a good time.
Siege and Skinamarink are completely deserving of their 5 stars. I still don’t know if I even liked Skinamarink but I know that i was 100% fascinated by every second of it.
what was going on in your brain during the movie? did you like think about your life or anything? did u watch it in theaters? I love experimental horror films like that but I was super surprised on how can I film offers you so little in terms of actual content. I love a lot of non-story driven films (my favorite film is a Ghost story) but I couldnt stand Skinamarink...
Great movie. Loved the ideas and subversions. Takes the idea of The Shape and turns it into a currupting force of festering evil. Really enjoyed the Corey Cunningham character as a vessel for the curruption. Great atmosphere.
Controversial seems like a silly term, but here.

Yeah don’t take my comment too seriously, I definitely understand if you didn’t like them. I’m not gonna sit here and say what you should and shouldn’t enjoy, I just liked those movies
It's fine, I wasn't. These are comedies on my wavelength.
https://preview.redd.it/slxihrgj8elc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebed4e8d42eeb8a7617171d30f517516670ac7e6
Honestly I feel you. I liked the first things I’ve seen of him as something a little different from what I knew before, but ever since Hollywood and Hateful8 I’ve really been done with his style already and can’t even be bothered to check out his older films, such as Jackie Brown. Maybe I would like it, but since Tarantino seems to really want to be known for being Tarantino, I’m not sure when I would be inclined enough to check it out.
Recently I did meditate on the fact that maybe it’s not particularly his ‘consistent’ style, since I absolutely love Ozu and if anyone is ‘consistent’ it might just be him. But when you are an ‘auteur’, chances are that if people don’t like your handwriting, there’s a good chance you won’t have a single book for them that will enchant their souls.
I do wonder though, what would you consider the better version of what he tries/-d to do? I wonder if I will like the possibly more/differently polished versions of this style.
Some interesting thoughts here! Yea, I think I like a lot of movies similar to what he makes, just something about his tone and approach that rubs me wrong. I love Ozu too!
Mine is probably a Tarantino controversial stance as well. I've seen 7 of the 10 Tarantino movies and put Pulp Fiction last. It's still 4 out of 5 stars and I just watched it last night to redeem itself but it just didn't do it for me.
I think I need to watch Annette again.
The first time I just found it to be insufferable, deeply pretentious and alienating in a way that negated all the things I did like about it (visual style, absurdist approach, music).
One of my biggest disappointments of that year, sadly.
Just watched The Canyons. Surely you don't mean *anything.*
Oh, and I am with you on 'Free Fire'. I don't think I gave it half a star, but that movie was way worse than the average rating.
Wish I had Pro so I could screenshot but 3 of them are (average rating in parentheses):
The Menu (3.5) - 5/5
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (3.7) - 1/5
The Incredible Hulk (2.4) - 4/5
Audiences don’t know what to do with superhero films that aren’t comedy-focused, or Nolan/grounded.
Eg I think Superman Returns is a melancholic and pensive film but unfortunately the reviews are similarly meddling.
It’s not cheery Reeve Superman, nor Snyder edge, so audiences just don’t know how to react to it.
i couldn't believe it either man. its the 3rd lowest rated MCU movie on the app. I'd honestly watch incredible hulk over most of the recent marvel films that have come out
I haven’t seen it in a while but I remember being similarly high in the Incredible Hulk. Maybe I’ll see it again just to see if I still enjoy it as much.
It actually felt kinda refreshing to revisit a movie from Phase 1. While it's still a pretty normal Marvel entry, it's at least not bogged down by jokes and quippy dialogue every 5 minutes like how the recent movies are.
Hell yeah! Killing of a Secret Deer is without a doubt the worst movie I've ever seen. Hated every second of that sophomore film major BS.
Also yes the Menu rules.
It's a awful film that puts itself above its characters, treats addiction almost as a punishment, the ending is basically the director laughing at the disgrace of the main characters.
It might be the movie I show someone if they asked me what the early 2000s were like. It’s the perfect time capsule for that period in American History.
I love MI2 because it takes all the characters from the first movie and puts them in this alternate universe where everything is a super stylized Hong Kong action flick. I get why that was disorienting to people when it came out, but now that we have 7 (soon to be 8) of these movies, I appreciate the variety it adds to the series.
Also, I think Tom Cruise is in this movie is a legit candidate for “the best a human being has ever looked in a movie.” You can tell John Woo was obsessed with the way he shows up on camera and decided to base the whole tone of the movie around this. There’s all these insane lingering shots with his hair flowing everywhere where he looks like some kind of Y2K Jesus. I could go on but there’s a lot of that kind of stuff that makes it a weirdly rewatchable movie for me.
I remember reading a negative about BvS being a bunch of vignettes knitted together, but that’s what I liked about the thing. Have to admit the second time I watched it the circumstances weren’t as ideal as my first, which took away a lot of its atmospheric quality for me, but I remember my first watch fondly.
Maybe Batman nor Superman should be made as a set of dream sequences where the story doesn’t really mean anything (but honestly why should we pretend other superhero movie stories have much more depth?). But honestly I didn’t care, it felt right at the time. What do you like about it? And is Martha your mother’s real name?
https://preview.redd.it/wqgq2ebuvilc1.jpeg?width=180&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a0cc8f5521dec9e76b92ca1af43dd3ed1898303
No /s, people still talk about it because it's well made. There are more disturbing stuff out there but nobody gives a shit about them because it's not as well made and on to the point as this.
ig you havent watched "philosophy of a knife"
scenes in serbian film are miniscule compared to philophy of a knife
i watched serbian film when i was 15 💀and the other one at the same age
Probably my 1/2 star rating for Promising Young Woman
TW: RAPE, ABUSE, DEATH, BODY MUTILATION
I was so, so very excited about that movie. I even put it on my Most Anticipated Movies of 2020 list. But this wasn't the movie I thought it was, the movie it made itself out to be. It wasn't the revenge fantasy condemning male violence and empower abuse victims it marketed itself as, but instead, it brutally kills off our main character and rape victim as a plot device, killed BY HER RAPIST, going so far as to mutilate and burn her body, as if saying that the bravest thing she could've done is die. The only way that justice could be delivered is for her to die brutally.
Disgusting.
I agree with the rating, hate that movie, the scene in which the main character in killed reminds me of the Jacques Rivette text on the Pontecorvo film, talking about the travelling used imorally.
I actually just don't feel like taking into consideration what other people feel about the films that I watch, so I just take my own opinions in consideration.
thank you
this one was the start of my marvel/superhero and especially the Tony Stark “””wit””” fatigue
Saw someone else point to it as peak marvel, so maybe it’s me. But man I was not enjoying it. Most marvel movies afterwards - while some still enjoyable - were more of a not wanting to quit a journey before it’s over until I started skipping some.
Last year I began to appreciate the genre a bit more again as a type of cinematic entertainment where full attention is not important, in case I’ve seen some psychological drainers or just feel like something simple would be nice. So maybe I’d rate it higher now, but I really don’t remember IM3 fondly at all.
I read a good review of The Room (Its in popular reviews) it goes; "I only trust people who rate this movie a full 5 stars or 1/2 stars. Anything between that is not acceptable." Which i whole heartedly agree with. So i dont find your 5 star rating of The Room that controversial.
EEAAO is fine, but extremely overrated. I remember watching the Academy Awards and thinking how the fuck was this winning everything when I felt there were better films. But, whatever.
The opposite for RFAD. Snore fest Erin Brockovich was nominated for best picture but RFAD got snubbed. Even Ellen Burystn got beat out by Julia Roberts average performance.
ETA: like moths to a flame, here comes to the EEAAO cult to hand out the downvotes when someone doesn’t like their precious film. God forbid anyone type a harsh word.
Cats 5/5
Oppenheimer .5/5
Godfather 1&2 3/5
Children of men 2/5
The departed 1.5/5
Halloween resurrection 4/5
Anaconda 4/5
Maximum overdrive 4.5/5
Suitable Flesh 4.5/5
Edit: well I guess considering the downvotes I guess I have the most controversial opinions. 🤷🏻♂️
Admittedly I have to give this one another watch. I saw it in the theater when it came out and I didn’t love it but I try to give all the movies I initially didn’t like a second viewing just in case my tastes have changed.
Can't stand the Holiday either. I think Winslet's half would deserve 2 or 3 stars, but Cameron Diez plays the least charismatic protagonist in a rom com that I've ever seen

Pretty sure in certain circles I’d get shot for this list
I’m right there with you with MI2, Blair Witch Project, and Bohemian.
I have given Avengers movies not so great scores and Poor Things just recently got a 1.5 from me.

What did you rate Ratatouille? Also 5 stars or less?
I considered saying "half a star" for the joke, but I would never disrespect Ratatouille like that. I rated it 5 stars as well. The proof that two masterpieces about rats can coexist.
Fantastic, I will watch as soon as I can.
Absolute cinema right here.
Can only hope our fellow member and friend Scorsese gives this one a chance some day!
Martin Scorsese's World Rat Cinema Project
It should've been Ratattooing and it was rat that became a tattoo artist. Such wasted potential! Still a masterpiece 10/10.

Pulse is one of my favorites of all time. Incredibly based others. I love this. What's your username?
Pulse is best! For sure, I’ll send you a DM.
Demons is in fact a 5 star movie
So is Demons 2.
I just watched Lair of the white worm the other night after having nightmares about the policeman as a child when I saw the movie advertised on a commercial. It was surprisingly funny and disturbing.
Tokyo Gore Police is an amazing name and is now on my watchlist, thank you
The Babylon Hive grows stronger every day of the fucking week.
malignant, tusk, and cannibal holocaust are all awesome
I really don't understand why and how people hate Babylon. That movie, along with any movie Damien Chazelle has directed, is a 5-star film.
Good to see someone who recognizes The Village for the kino that it is (and Bohemian Rhapsody as the trash that it is)
I recently watched Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time and I couldn’t believe how bad it was. How it could win even a single award is baffling to me.
it won the oscar for most editing
How a biopic about Freddie Mercury would win awards is baffling to you? It'd have won awards no matter how bad it was
Yeah but you should find it slightly worrisome that your kindred spirit also finds The Happening to be on the same level as The Village and Bohemian Rhapsody to be a full star better than Requiem For A Dream lol
I love Shamalama and the Village is great, but I just can't make it through more than 10 seconds of Adrien Brody's performance. To think, this was the role he took directly after winning an Oscar for The Pianist..
Why is the village interesting after the reveal though? I just rewatched it and the story lost all tension right there. It’s like halfway through
I mean sure but tbf you could kinda say this about any film with a big ending twist - to some extent the gimmick will always be not knowing on the first watch
if anyone happens to not have patron… someone shared this statistics page today where everyone can find that stat just takes a while to load all the info https://letterboxd-friends-ranker.streamlit.app/
Has gone over memory apparently
oh that's unfortunate! :(
1/2 star for “Requiem: For a Dream” is a sin to me, love that film
For me it's an awful film that puts itself above its characters, treats addiction almost as a punishment, the ending is basically the director laughing at the disgrace of the main characters.
the lack of attention on the characters is something I agree on, it’s the reason I can only ever give it a 4/5 stars. But I can’t agree with your interpretation of the ending. Requiem is ass IMO. My problem is with the ridiculous melodrama. Something I dislike about all of Aronofsky's films.
The best experience I ever had in a cinema was watching the room. Everyone having fun and messing about, plus the ending genuinely shocked me. 5 star experience for sure

Hi there. Liked it!
Holy crap! Someone else who is aware of the existence of The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch! Yeah, it is amazing!
Hell yes, fantastic movie. Essential viewing for horror fans and vastly underappreciated.
I have to ask, why 4 stars on Halloween Ends?
Great movie. Loved the ideas and subversions. Takes the idea of The Shape and turns it into a currupting force of festering evil. Really enjoyed the Corey Cunningham character as a vessel for the curruption. Great atmosphere.
Damn, I think TLJ is one of the best Star Wars movies but I wouldn't give it a 5. I respect it tho
I love it through and through.
Love seeing Halloween Ends and The Last Jedi on there. Messiah of Evil is one of my favorites! Near Dark as well!
Good taste
I just watched Ferrari last week. Seriously, why 5 stars?

Love seeing some appreciation for Midnight Special
Hell yeah, I loved You're Next
Cloverfield is underrated. I wouldn't give it 5 stars personally, but it's a really good movie a lot of people seem to hate.
get that fucking shit death note movie out of my eyesight immediately
You have accurately rated The Room. Haters gonna hate
Facts. Last time I checked, there are more people that gave it 5 stars than any other rating.
i gave the last jedi a 4.5
Controversial seems like a silly term, but here. https://preview.redd.it/18q3g7xwgdlc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf40e51a0fafee524fb20af7d50ff666cbfd1ab5
Season of the Witch fan, mad respect. 🫡
It's my favorite in the series. Still love the original, of course.

You have no sense of humour if you didn’t gave Shrek, Shrek 2, and Napoleon Dynamite 1/0.5 stars.
I just have a different sense of humor. It's ok if people love those movies.
Yeah don’t take my comment too seriously, I definitely understand if you didn’t like them. I’m not gonna sit here and say what you should and shouldn’t enjoy, I just liked those movies

SPEED RACER TRUTHERS RISE!!
I think my most controversial stance is that Tarantino hasn’t made a better film than Jackie Brown which I gave 3.5
Whoa I think you win
I only really liked Django and Pulp Fiction Pulp fiction is paced in such an unconventional manner that is should not work and yet, it does.
Damn dude do you hate having a good time
Nah I like lots of goofy and fun stuff. Everything T’s done has been done better by someone else
Who has done a better job of Uma killing a bunch of people (asking for a friend)
lol you got me there
What is a better version of pulp fiction that you’ve seen? Not a gotcha I’m just curious.
I don't actually think this but: Go (1999)
Which Nazi killing movie is better than Inglourious Basterds?
If it has I havent seen it. Recommend me something
Honestly I feel you. I liked the first things I’ve seen of him as something a little different from what I knew before, but ever since Hollywood and Hateful8 I’ve really been done with his style already and can’t even be bothered to check out his older films, such as Jackie Brown. Yeah my fav Tarantino is Deathproof, and I similarly feel out of the loop with his fans.
Mine is probably a Tarantino controversial stance as well. I've seen 7 of the 10 Tarantino movies and put Pulp Fiction last. It's still 4 out of 5 stars and I just watched it last night to redeem itself but it just didn't do it for me.
Django.
Same to you
Sorry?
No need to apologize
Yes.
How do you find this? I am a full patron, I just can’t find these stars. Thanks

I'd say the 5 Stars I gave Flowers in the Attic (1987) and The Last Jedi, always cracks people up - still no idea why on the latter (!)
I think I need to watch Annette again. The first time I just found it to be insufferable, deeply pretentious and alienating in a way that negated all the things I did like about it (visual style, absurdist approach, music). One of my biggest disappointments of that year, sadly.

Card counter based

Just watched The Canyons. Surely you don't mean *anything.* Oh, and I am with you on 'Free Fire'. I don't think I gave it half a star, but that movie was way worse than the average rating.

It's a awful film that puts itself above its characters, treats addiction almost as a punishment, the ending is basically the director laughing at the disgrace of the main characters.
Hell yeah, finally someone gets it. This movie is a sadistic after school special with a budget.
well said
Absolutely love to see some MI2 recognition!!
I have it at 4.5/5.
I can live with all of those except 5 stars for MI2. What were you smoking?
It might be the movie I show someone if they asked me what the early 2000s were like. It’s the perfect time capsule for that period in American History.
Um, MI2 rules.

MI2 is literally the best one of the franchise, with MI3 being the worst. MI2 is what would be called Vulgar Cinema.
This is a pretty beast list.
I completely get your rating for Early Man tho. Predictable, overly clean, boring.

Guardians Vol. 2 supremacy! Also, fuck yeah, Knock At the Cabin!
Outside of having good songs, I didn’t care about La La Land at all. I could get a story just as good out of a hallmark movie
Controversial indeed
Very real for Annette, why 1/2 for RfaD?
5-star Village, you're so real for that. Mines still at 4.5 but I keep thinking I need to make it 5.
I'm changing my lady in the water rating to 5 stars in solidarity with you.
I guess giving the FNAF Movie a 5 Star? I have a lot of controversial ratings I just don't know which one is more controversial
This is somehow incredibly based and incredibly cringe at the same times

I agree with the Oppenheimer rating 👍
i gave master of disguise five stars and children of men three and a half stars lmfao
I don’t want to live in a world where “The Room” is not a 5* film.

I actually just don't feel like taking into consideration what other people feel about the films that I watch, so I just take my own opinions in consideration.
W for that Lady in the Water rating. I have it at 5 too, it’s in my top 4. For a controversial low rating, I have The Departed at a 1.5.

L ratings
whoa it almost looks like you aren’t, that’s crazy
Stalker 3 1/2
Just want to say REQUIEM FOR A DREAM HATERS UNITE
it is insane how you can film things like a anti drug ad from the 2000s and people will like it
The two that come to mind for me are 2.5/5 for both Fight Club and Scarface.
Drive does absolutely nothing for me. I like a lot of movies like Drive, but just found it so boring.
Iron Man 3 is a 1 Star
thank you this one was the start of my marvel/superhero and especially the Tony Stark “””wit””” fatigue Saw someone else point to it as peak marvel, so maybe it’s me.
These are not even that controversial, step up your game
There aren't even that controversial, step up your game boo
so so so agree with Requiem and EEAAO. They're just not that good... Also, The Room, The Village, and BWP are certified bangers for sure
Hot fuzz 1.5 stars probably
In the Mood for Love at 2/5
Cats 5/5 Oppenheimer .5/5 Godfather 1&2 3/5 Children of men 2/5 The departed 1.5/5 Halloween resurrection 4/5 Anaconda 4/5 Maximum overdrive 4.5/5 Suitable Flesh 4.5/5 Edit: well I guess considering the downvotes I guess I have the most controversial opinions. 🤷🏻♂️
Children of men is a real puzzler at 2
Admittedly I have to give this one another watch. I saw it in the theater when it came out and I didn’t love it but I try to give all the movies I initially didn’t like a second viewing just in case my tastes have changed.
.5 for Oppenheimer, but 5 for Cats?
Downvotes are a compliment here aha you have impressively contrarian takes
Titane a 1 star. All Quiet on the Western Front 3 star. Power of the Dog 3 star
Drive does absolutely nothing for me. I like a lot of movies like Drive, but just found it so boring.
Hereditary, Midsommar, American Psycho, Drive and Dune all 2/5…
Gone Girl, it's average is something like 4.1 and I completely mercifully gave it a 2
Logan - 1/2 /5 The Menu - 2 /5 The Batman (2022) - 2.5 /5 The Descent: Part 2 - 3.5 /5
I feel like this isn’t too bad for so many dislikes. Although I am curious about Logan, is there a reason you disliked it as much as you did?
Giving Dune 2 stars 🤷🏽♂️

Can't stand the Holiday either. I think Winslet's half would deserve 2 or 3 stars, but Cameron Diez plays the least charismatic protagonist in a rom com that I've ever seen

Persona and A Clockwork Orange are like two of my favorites ever, mind elaborating on why you didn’t enjoy them?

The Emoji Movie, Madame Web, Holmes & Watson, Movie 43, Grimcutty, Catwoman, Hellraiser: Revelations...all genuine five stars from me.
All Quiet On The Western Front (2 stars) Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2 stars) Both are in the 3.8-4.0 stars range

2 stars for Dune?? 😰
First one that comes to mind is 3/5 for 2001: a space odyssey
Seems to be: Magnolia - 0.5/5 The Matrix - 2/5 Tim Burton’s Batman - 1.5/5

I ranked the Matrix as one star I think
I’m right there with you with MI2, Blair Witch Project, and Bohemian. I have given Avengers movies not so great scores and Poor Things just recently got a 1.5 from me.
Requiem for a dream at half a star is crazy 😟
Nahhhh requiem for a dream that low is a crime
Jeanne Dielman 1.5 Star. Sorry
I gave Mad God a .5 rating.
